‘Happier Than A Bumblebee’: Pink Lloyd Chasing Another Record In Shepperton

Canada's sprint superstar Pink Lloyd will attempt to share the record for most wins in the Shepperton Stakes, Thursday afternoon at Woodbine.

Another race, another chance to add to a stacked racing résumé.

A victory in the 6-1/2-furlong, $100,000 main track Shepperton would tie champion Pink Lloyd with three-time winner Paso Doble, a son of Bold n' Flashy who took the 2011, 2013 and 2014 editions of the race.

Pink Lloyd, who won the 2017 and 2019 runnings, comes into the race off another record-setting performance.

On June 27, Canada's reigning three-time Champion Male Sprinter notched a record fourth straight victory in the Jacques Cartier Stakes and recorded his 20th overall added-money win. His initial Jacques Cartier score in 2017 was his first stakes victory and the start of an unprecedented 11-race win streak.

“It was a good race and a good start for him,” said trainer Robert Tiller. “Like me, he's getting older. But I'd say he ran very well. I certainly wouldn't knock it. He's doing very well. He's very happy. He hasn't worked since his last race – he does a lot of long miles. He's happier than a bumblebee.”

The eight-year-old son of Old Forester, owned by Entourage Stable, now turns his attention to the Shepperton, a race Tiller has won a record five times. Forever Grand (2003), Dave The Knave (2006), Dancer's Bajan (2008) are the conditioner's other Shepperton winners.

Bred in Ontario by John Carey, Pink Lloyd now boasts 23 wins from 28 starts lifetime with purse earnings over $1.8 million. The chestnut gelding is currently riding a seven-race win streak.

Tiller continues to marvel at the six-time Sovereign Award winner, who was named Canada's Horse of the Year in 2017.

“You know what, you probably run out of questions when it comes to this guy. I've run out of answers. You could ask me, 'At eight, is he still the same old Pink Lloyd?' My answer would be, 'Absolutely.' He doesn't know he's old. He's a lot like me. He's bucking and kicking, and feeling good.”

Pink Lloyd launched his career in 2016, winning his first three races, including a victory in his debut on August 28, a 1-1/2-length score over six furlongs on the Woodbine main track.

“It warms my heart [that he's built up a big fan base]. They should love him. I love him so much. The owners love him so much. I'm not saying he's the best horse ever. I'm saying he's got the most heart and charm of any horse I've ever seen, and I've trained a lot of good horses.

“I'd like to see him get over $2 million in career earnings, Canadian,” continued Tiller. “He'll go to LongRun [Thoroughbred Retirement Society] and have a great retirement. He'll be a movie star there after being a rock star on the racetrack.”

The Shepperton is scheduled as the seventh race on Thursday's eight-race program. First post is 3:20 p.m. Fans can watch and wager on all the action via HPIBet.com. Racing Night Live returns on Thursday, with live action from Woodbine Racetrack and Woodbine Mohawk Park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on TSN.

British Columbia Yearling And Mixed Sale Catalog Now Online

The catalog for the 2020 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (British Columbia Division) Yearling and Mixed Sale is now online, with 78 entries.

The auction will take place Tuesday, Sept. 8 at the Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, B.C., beginning at 3 p.m. Pacific. The sale will be streamed live on the CTHS British Columbia website.

All but one of this year's entries are yearlings, with the lone exception being a 2-year-old. In addition to British Columbia-breds, the catalog features offerings born in Kentucky and Oklahoma. Regardless of state of origin, all yearlings offered in the sale are eligible for the Canadian Sales Stakes Series, including races in British Columbia and across Canada.

Stallions whose first yearlings are entered in the catalog include Cupid, Iliad, and Midnight Storm.

Queen’s Plate: 61 Canadian-Bred Sophomores Remain Eligible For Sept. 12 Contest

Sixty-one of the finest Canadian-bred three-year-olds remain on target for the 161st running of the $1 million Queen's Plate, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12.

The connections of 58 Queen's Plate hopefuls made the July 1 sustaining payment with an additional three supplementing to the 1 1/4-mile opening leg of the Canadian Triple Crown for a fee of $5,000.

Recent Queenston Stakes winner Halo Again is among the top contenders after his triumphant return to Woodbine on July 4 when he defeated a field of fellow Queen's Plate hopefuls in the seven-furlong prep. Bred by Anderson Farms, the son of Speightstown and Halo's Verse has won three of his first five career starts, including last year's Coronation Futurity, while banking almost $260,000 for owners Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton Racing. The bay colt will aim to pull off the rare Coronation Futurity and Queen's Plate double, last accomplished by Norcliffe in 1976. He is conditioned by top American trainer Steve Asmussen, whose first foray in the Canadian Triple Crown yielded a third-place finish in last year's Queen's Plate followed by a pair of victories in the Prince of Wales Stakes and Breeders' Stakes courtesy of Tone Broke.

Halo Again is the 8-1 fourth choice in the 2020 Queen's Plate Winterbook. Nine of the top 10 Winterbook selections remain eligible including pre-season favourite Malibu Mambo, trained by Kevin Attard and owned by Stronach Stables.

The list of nominees includes 10 of the 36 fillies that remain eligible to the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks presented by Budweiser, which will be contested on August 15.

Canadian Triple Crown-winning trainer and new Hall of Fame inductee Mike Keogh has a pair of contenders including Dr. Green, one of the three supplements. Other supplements include Canadian Pharoah, an unraced colt sired by the U.S. Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, and Ennis the Menace.

An additional $10,000 payment or supplementary fee of $25,000 is due upon entry to the Queen's Plate on Wednesday, Sept. 9 by 8:30 a.m.

Ninety-two horses, including 14 fillies, were originally nominated to the 2020 Queen's Plate.

Canadian Yearling Auctions Slated To Be Conducted In-Person

The yearling sales for the provincial divisions of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society are expected to be conducted in a live-auction format in 2020, foregoing the option of going online, Canadian Thoroughbred reports.

The publication contacted CTHS representatives in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba, with each confirming that their “Plan A” is to hold their sales as normal, within their local and national guidelines in regards to COVID-19 safety. Like anything else during the pandemic, plans are subject to change depending on increased or decreased restrictions.

First on the calendar is the CTHS Manitoba Division sale, to be held at the Red River Exhibition Grounds in Winnipeg on Sunday, Aug. 23.

The Canadian Premier Sale in Ontario will be held Wednesday, Sept, 2 at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion in Toronto. Should Ontario not be fully re-open for business by the time of the sale, the auction will be held with limitations on group sizes, and guidelines on social distancing, mask wearing, and sanitary measures. Should the situation become especially dire, CTHS Ontario will consider expanded phone and online bidding options.

British Columbia's yearling sale will take place Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, though the group is still waiting on the province to reach the next phase of reopening before the sale can be conducted as planned. Regardless of where the province is in its recovery, the traditional preview parade for the sale has been canceled due to crowd size restrictions.

Rounding out the quartet is the CTHS Alberta sale in Friday, Sept. 18 at Westerner Park in Red Deer.
