Millionaire Penja Leads Arc Sale

A Group 3 winner and Group 2-placed, 3-year-old filly Penja (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) (lot 11) brought star quality to Saturday night's Arqana Arc Sale at Saint-Cloud Racecourse, and she duly topped proceedings at €1.2 million when Stuart Boman of Blandford Bloodstock prevailed over a remote bidder on Arqana's online platform. Boman noted Penja had been bought for German owner Jurgen Satori.

“We're very happy with the purchase,” Boman said. “She's an exceptional filly with a fantastic acceleration. We had to fight to get her but she's worth it. We're delighted.”

Penja remains engaged in Sunday's G1 Prix de l'Opera at ParisLongchamp.

Purchased by trainer Jean-Claude Rouget for €90,000 at Arqana October in 2019, Penja carried the colours of Daniel Yves-Treves to a victory at Marseille Borely last October. She won conditions races over a mile and two and a mile and one this season before stepping up to take the G3 Prix de Psyche at Deauville in August. She was a nose second in the G2 Prix de la Nonette back at that course on Aug. 21. She is a half-sister to the Listed Derby du Midi victor Taos (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}), while her dam, the unraced Just With You (Ire) (Sunday Break {Jpn}) is a full-sister to Dubai Group 2 winner Frankyfourfingers (Ire).

Arqana annually engages a select offering of horses in training with good current form for its boutique Arc sale on the eve of ParisLongchamp's flagship event. This time around, 34 horses offered. Nineteen sold for €4,975,000. The average was €261,842, and the median €160,000. Last year, 11 were sold from 19 offered for €3,050,000. The average was €277,273, and the median €260,000.

It was another 3-year-old from the Rouget yard, this time a colt, that generated the sale's second top price: Aga Khan Studs homebred Saiydabad (Blame) (lot 32) was knocked down to Emmanuel de Seroux's Narvick International for €575,000 and is bound for Saudi Arabia. The fourth foal out of the G3 Prix de Lieurey victress Sarkiyla (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Saiyabad won his first three starts this year before finishing fourth behind St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and ninth in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Returning from a summer break on Sept. 5 and back down to 2000 metres, Saiydabad won the G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange, and the horse that has displayed an affinity for good going was sold off a seventh-place finish in Saturday's G2 Prix Dollar over the very soft ground.

As can generally be the case at a sale of this kind, there were a handful of high-profile buybacks, headed by progressive 3-year-old Partenit (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who was unsold at €775,000. Bellharbour Music (Mshawish), who had headed Partentit in the G3 Prix Daphnis on Aug. 21, similarly failed to find a new home at €550,000, while the Daphnis fifth Colosseo (Street Boss) was unsold at €575,000. Wildcard entry Lady Day (Fr) (Motivator {GB}), a listed winner this summer, was a €500,000 buyback.

Featuring among the 2-year-old offerings was Scherzo (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) (lot 24). The half-brother to group winners Calvados Blues (Fr) (Lando {Ger}) and Volta (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) won his first two races this summer for Yann Barberot and owner Malcolm Parrish, and was offered by Barberot off a recent second in the G3 Prix des Chenes. The €70,000 yearling was picked up by Charlie Gordon-Watson for €420,000.

German-based filly Tabera (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) (lot 33) built on a pair of stakes victories last year at three when taking Baden-Baden's G3 Preis der Sparkassen Finanzgruppe by 3 3/4 lengths in August, and the 100,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling was picked up by Oceanic Bloodstock–on behalf of a syndicate of breeders managed by Haras des Capucines–on Saturday for €400,000.

Brother of St Mark’s Basilica Set For Curragh Bow

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Sunday's Observations features a brother to five-time Group 1 winner St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}).

Bob Scarborough's prolific mare Cabaret (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has excelled in the paddocks with her nine foals headed by MG1SW sire Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and five-time Group 1-winning phenomenon St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Next in line is the Jessica Harrington-trained PARIS LIGHTS (IRE) (Siyouni {Fr}), a full-brother to the latter and a 650,000gns vendor buy-back at last year's Tattersalls October Book 1, who gets the assistance of Conor Hoban in this debut for a yard firing on all cylinders. He encounters three from Ballydoyle, and more, in an intriguing 17-runner affair. Coolmore and Westerberg's China Seas (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a full-brother to elite-level winners Hermosa (Ire), Hydrangea (Ire) and The United States (Ire) and also hails from the family of Saturday's G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park S. heroine Tenebrism (Caravaggio). Set to be partnered by Emmet McNamara, the bay is accompanied by Aidan O'Brien stablemates Cougar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), an unraced son of G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and G1 Criterium International placegetter Promise To Be True (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and Temple of Artemis (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is a full-brother to three stakes performers headed by G1 Irish Derby and G1 Gold Cup runner-up Kingfisher (Ire). Elsewhere on the cast list, Joseph O'Brien has nominated another debutant of note and introduces Alvaro Odriozola Arzallus' Sir Antonino (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is a 300,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 son of G3 Sceptre S. third and G1 Cheveley Park S. fourth Terror (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}).

Godolphin's GOLDSPUR (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is a homebred son of G1 Prix Vermeille second Pomology (Arch), dished out a 6 1/2-length shellacking to Wolsey (Kitten's Joy), himself kin to last year's GI American Oaks heroine Duopoly (Animal Kingdom), when earning 'TDN Rising Stardom' in a Sept. 15 one-mile test at Sandown last time. Upped in trip and taking an early sighter of Tattenham Corner here, he is confronted by a field of four prior winners, headed by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's similarly unbeaten Merlin's Lady (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), who is a 320,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 full-sister to MGSW GI Belmont Derby Invitational third Hunting Horn (Ire) and comes back off a seven-furlong Ayr debut score for the Kevin Ryan stable last month.

Camelot’s Luxembourg Impressive In The Beresford

Aidan O'Brien's crop of juveniles had looked short of the usual standard up to Saturday, but five minutes of action across Newmarket and The Curragh changed the conversation with the hugely exciting Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) doing his bit for Ballydoyle in the G2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford S. Not seen since winning in style on debut in a conditions event over this mile trip at Killarney July 14, the imposing Westerberg-Coolmore representative was the subject of heavy support into 8-13 favouritism for this prize Aidan O'Brien had already won an astounding 20 times. Racing in a detached last early with Seamie Heffernan downing anchor, the bay was green initially when switched wide to challenge in the straight but accelerated when the whip was shown to seize the advantage a furlong from home and surge to an impressive 4 3/4-length success from Manu Et Corde (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Speaking from Newmarket, Aidan O'Brien simply said, “We've always thought the world of that horse.”

When it comes to the Beresford, it is now customary that a future star is on display. While in the 1980s, the likes of Assert (Ire) and Sadler's Wells prevailed, it was not until the early 2000s that it became a more consistent marker of excellence. After Alamshar (Ire), Azamour (Ire), Sea the Stars (Ire) and St Nicholas Abbey (Ire) came Saxon Warrior (Jpn) and although the opposition here might not have been top-class, there is reason to believe that Luxembourg could fit into that category with the potent turn of foot he displayed. Incredibly, none of the previous 20 winners from the current set-up at Ballydoyle went on to win the G1 Epsom Derby and only Capri (Ire) and Saxon Warrior were Classic winners thereafter, so Luxembourg's immediate short odds quoted for the blue riband seem premature even allowing for the impression he created.

Seamie Heffernan has been around long enough to know what a top prospect feels like and his enthusiasm was as noteworthy as it was unsurprising. “He's very smart at home and he's proven it twice now. I was very impressed–very talented, very smooth,” he said. “The most impressive thing about him is he knows he's good and he doesn't show it off. He doesn't show you until you press the button and say 'give us a look'. When you have that turn of foot a mile is well within his comfort zone. His dad was a good staying horse that had the pace and class to win a Guineas. If Aidan wants to run him in the Guineas he'll change his galloping procedures and if he's targeting the Derby he'll go a different route. The turn of foot he showed me today was pretty exciting. I'm not sure what he's going to be targeted at, but he couldn't have done that any easier.”

Luxembourg's dam Attire (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) raced over seven furlongs and a mile and has also produced the 10-furlong G2 Mooresbridge S. winner Leo de Fury (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Sense of Style (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) who was placed in the G3 Ballylinch Stud 1000 Guineas Trial and G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack Memorial S. The second dam Asnieres (Spend a Buck) is a half-sister to the GI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Arcangues (Sagace {Fr}) who produced the versatile Forgotten Voice (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). He had the speed to win the Royal Hunt Cup over a mile and the stamina to add the 12-furlong G3 Glorious S. to his tally before finishing third in the two-mile Listed Esher S. during a spell when he also raced over hurdles.

Attire, whose yearling full-brother to Luxembourg sells during Wednesday's session of the Goffs Orby, is also kin to the G3 Prix de Flore winner Australie (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) who produced the Listed Carlingford S. winner and G3 Diamond S.-placed Hawke (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}) and the Listed Prix de Saint-Cyr scorer Mireille (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}). Also the second dam of the Listed Criterium de Lyon scorer and G3 Prix Thomas Bryon runner-up Private Jet (Fr) (Aussie Rules) and the Listed Prix Marchand d'Or winner and G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis second Princedargent (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), the relative of the distinguished G1 Prix de Diane heroine Aqarelliste (Fr) (Danehill) visited Camelot again last year and has a filly foal as a result.

O’Brien’s Cazoo Derby Team Being Finalised

The G1 Cazoo Derby field is currently at 19, with as many as six Aidan O'Brien colts set to compete, including the ante-post favourite dual Group 3 winner Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G2 Beresford S. hero and G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante S. third High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was the Derby favourite over the winter. French Group 1 winner Van Gogh (American Pharoah), third in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas is possible, although he is also one of 20 left in the G1 Qatar Prix du Jockey Club. O'Brien also has two-time winners Sir Lamorak (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the Leopardstown winner The Mediterranean (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). However, a final call on which Ballydoyle horses will step forward in the Blue Riband will be made on Wednesday.

“It's not definite yet what we're sending,” said the master of Ballydoyle. “They've all done their last piece of work this morning and that is being analysed at the moment.

“When the figures come back from all those works, they'll be sent to the lads [owners] this evening. They'll be blooded and scoped in the morning and we'll have the results of that at lunchtime tomorrow or a little bit later. After that we'll see what the lads want to do.

“Obviously with Bolshoi Ballet, this has been his target all the way. High Definition the same, but he didn't have a clear passage obviously to York. Kyprios and Sir Lamorak both have other options, The Mediterranean is in at Leopardstown on Thursday and Van Gogh has an option of going to France [for the French Derby on Sunday]. Everything went well this morning and it's so far so good with them.”

“I think it's very competitive.,” O'Brien said of this year's Derby entries. “There's horses that have come from different trials over different trips and I think they all have to be respected.

“For me, there is no doubt the Derby is the most important race of all. The whole thoroughbred breed is measured by the Derby–because it's the most gruelling race and tough on horses.”
