Faversham, Full-Brother To California Chrome, Enters Stud At Daehling Ranch In California

Faversham, a multiple winner and the only full-brother to two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome, has been retired from racing to stand at Daehling Ranch in Northern California. His 2021 fee is $2,000, live foal guarantee. Lifetime breeding rights are available for $4,500.

A 5-year-old son of the late Lucky Pulpit, California's leading sire by progeny earnings in 2014 and 2016, Faversham was campaigned by his co-breeders, Perry and Denise Martin of Martin Racing, who also co-bred and raced California Chrome. Like his wildly famous older sibling, Faversham is a California-bred who won races on two different surfaces.

California Chrome won the 2014 Kentucky Derby, the 2016 Dubai World Cup and five additional Grade 1 races on dirt and turf before he retired to the breeding shed in 2017 with Eclipse Awards as Horse of the Year for 2014 and 2016, and a career bankroll of $14,752,650 that ranked him as the highest-earning North American runner in history. After standing his first three breeding seasons in Kentucky, with two additional Southern Hemisphere stints in Chile, California Chrome was purchased privately in late 2019 by Japan-based connections, and stood at Arrow Stud in that country this year.

The 9-year-old stallion is represented by eight winners from his first crop of 2-year-olds in 2020, led by his Grade 1-placed filly, Cilla.

Faversham and California Chrome were produced by two-time California Broodmare of the Year Love the Chase, a winning daughter of 12-time leading Maryland sire Not For Love.

“Faversham overcame several obstacles, including a torn tendon, to win races in California and Kentucky for us,” Perry Martin said of the Santa Anita Park and Turfway Park winner. “He always tried his best and managed to carve his own identity from the immense shadow cast by his big brother, who was the rarest of all Thoroughbreds — the horse of a lifetime.”

“We are thrilled to bring him home to California, where the legendary story of California Chrome started, and to offer his proven bloodlines at an affordable price for breeders on a budget.”

Faversham successfully covered a small group of test mares privately late last spring, and will be available to outside mare owners in 2021 as a registered California stallion nominated to Breeders' Cup.

Hall Of Fame Trainer Gary Jones, Conditioner Of Turkoman, Passes At Age 76

News regarding the passing of retired Hall of Fame trainer Gary Jones hit hard at Santa Anita Monday morning, as word circulated that Jones had passed away following a lengthy illness at age 76 at his home in Del Mar.

The son of one of California's all time training greats, Gary Jones was born June 16, 1944 in Long Beach and he was unquestionably destined for a life at the racetrack, which he certainly made the most of.

After an extended apprenticeship with his father, the legendary Farrell “Wild Horse” Jones, Gary Jones took over the Jones Stable in 1974 and from there, took it to new heights, as the barn produced an incredible 104 stakes winners over the next 22 years, including 1986 Eclipse Award winning Older Horse, Turkoman.

A trainer who redefined hands-on horsemanship, Jones operated a split stable between Santa Anita and Hollywood Park for several years and he had a bushel basket full of speeding tickets to prove it.

“I gotta seem 'em go myself,” he once said, when asked why he felt compelled to watch a set or two of his horses train in Inglewood prior to blasting up the Harbor Freeway back to Arcadia in time to oversee the training of his Santa Anita-based charges. “I've got good people, but I just can't take somebody's else's word for it. I want to see them myself.”

A two-time winner of the Santa Anita Handicap—in 1992 with eventual Hall of Famer Best Pal and in 1994, via disqualification, with Stuka, Jones ranks eighth on Santa Anita's all time Winter/Spring win list with 576 victories and he is currently ninth in Santa Anita stakes-won with 72.

Jones, who was a fierce advocate for California racing, trained an incredible 104 stakes winners prior to his retirement in 1996 that included Kostroma, Quiet American, Time to Explode, Lakeway and Wishing Well, who would go on to become the dam of 1989 Horse of the Year Sunday Silence.

Gary Jones is survived by his wife Joanie and two sons, trainer Marty and David, who is a Los Angeles-based attorney.

Services are pending.

Court Overturns CHRB Decision Awarding Rosario Double Jockey Fee In 2017 Breeders’ Cup Distaff

In a precedent-setting victory for horse owners' rights this Monday, the Court of Appeals overturned the California Horse Racing Board's 2017 decision to award $100,000 in double jockey fee to Joel Rosario.

The Court held that, under the conditions presented by this case, California statute prohibited the stewards from awarding a double jockey fee to Rosario, who was removed from the mount on owner/breeder Charles Fipke's mare, Forever Unbridled, prior to the draw of the 2017 Breeders' Cup Distaff.

The CHRB awarded a double jockey fee to Joel Rosario after owner Fipke decided to remove Rosario from the mount and replace him with jockey John Velazquez. Forever Unbridled subsequently won the 2017 race.

The appellate court ruled that Mr. Fipke engaged in conduct permitted by CHRB rules and that under the facts of this case, an award of a double jockey fee was precluded by California statute.

Fipke was represented by attorneys Darrell Vienna and Carlo Fisco.

“The law appeared to be clearly and straightforwardly in Mr. Fipke's favor.” said attorney Carlo Fisco. “Therefore Mr. Fipke must be
commended for staying the course in seeking a fair and just decision. Owners now have a level of protection going forward and the industry also stands to gain from the clarification supplied by the appellate court.”

Attorney Darrell Vienna added: “This decision which defines and clarifies the rights of horse owners has been a long time coming. Thanks to the patience and fortitude of Mr. Fipke in pursuing this matter, the rights of horse owners have been further defined and clarified.”

Fipke stated: “I pursued this case because I believe that horse owners have the right to make decisions regarding their horses and ensure that I and other horse owners are neither denied that right nor subjected to arbitrary and unfair sanctions for exercising that
right.”

The CHRB was also ordered to pay appellant's costs as a result of the decision.
