Sherman to Retire From Training

Trainer Art Sherman, best known for conditioning dual Classic winner California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit), plans to retire at the end of the year. The story was originally published by the Blood-Horse.

Upon his retirement, the 84-year-old's horses will likely be split between his sons Steve and Alan. In addition to traveling and spending time with his family, the elder Sherman will do a little bloodstock work.

Sherman was an exercise rider and jockey prior to taking up training. He was the regular exercise rider of Hall of Famer Swaps.

Sherman's first Grade I winner was Siren Lure (Joyeux Danseur), a horse he claimed for $50,000. His other top-level scorers, aside from California Chrome, are Ultra Bend (Richly Blended), Haimish Hy (Ecton Park) and Lang Field (Langfuhr).

Sherman became the oldest trainer to win the Kentucky Derby at age 77 when California Chrome took the 2014 renewal. The Cal-bred followed with a win in the GI Preakness S. and GI Hollywood Derby that season, clenching the Eclipse Award for top 3-year-old male and Horse of the Year. Capturing the 2016 G1 Dubai World Cup, the chestnut also took that year's GI Pacific Classic and GI Awesome Again S., but was run down by Arrogate (Unbridled's Song) in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. He took home champion older horse and Horse of the Year that season.

As of Nov. 24, Sherman has saddled 2,261 winners with earnings of $45,312,331.

Full-Brother To Nyquist To Enter Stud In California

An unnamed, unraced full-brother to champion and leading freshman sire Nyquist will enter stud in California after selling for $32,000 during Friday's closing session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

The 2-year-old Uncle Mo colt was purchased as a stallion prospect by E.A.S. Equine Alliance, and breeder Debbie Barkley signed the ticket.

“I've got some very nice mares, and I intend to incorporate him into our breeding program,” Barkley said. “I'm excited to be able to have the opportunity to purchase a colt of this breeding quality and take him out to California.”

Bred in Kentucky by Hinkle Farms, the colt is out of the winning Forestry mare Seeking Gabrielle, whose four winners from five runners are headlined by the champion juvenile and Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, a member of Darley's stallion roster who finished the 2020 season as North America's leading freshman sire. His second dam is the Grade 2 winner Seeking Regina, who is the pivot point for runners including Grade 1 winner Sahara Sky and Grade 2 winner Seeking the Sky.

The colt was originally a $650,000 purchase by the Coolmore partnership at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, but a tendon injury put a halt to his racing career before it could begin.

Barkley said on Friday that she had not decided on a farm for the colt to stand, or a name for him. However, she felt confident that she had the had the right horse when those blanks were filled.

“He's a really nice horse,” she said. “Really classy, a ton of quality. Everything you'd like to see in a nice racehorse. It's just unfortunate the turn of events were such that he wasn't able to move on with his racing career. I liked what I saw and was willing to go out out on a limb. Good things are going to happen, I have a good feeling.”

Loughnane Duo Will Return at Three

GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint runner-up Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {GB}) and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf fifth Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) have both exited their Del Mar starts well and are pointing to 3-year-old campaigns. Trainer David Loughnane was pleased with his Group 2 winners, with Go Bears Go taking the G2 Railway S. earlier this year and Hello You winning the G2 Rockfel S. at Newmarket. The colt will be aimed for the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, while Hello You will take part in a Classic trial.

“It was a great experience and both ran great races. I couldn't be happier with them,” said Loughnane. “I thought going into it five might be a bit sharp for him over there. He missed the break by a millisecond which he's never done before.

“Had he jumped, he'd have won. In four more strides he'd have won, but I couldn't be any prouder of the horse. He ran an absolute belter of a race and it capped off a fantastic year for him. Five to six furlongs will be his trip over here next year. I suppose the most logical option would be something along the lines of the Commonwealth Cup.

“We'll see how it goes. He thrived off the whole travelling. There are loads of options, including Dubai at the end of February. He'll go for a nice holiday now and then we'll take it one step at a time. We'll see how he is come January and then we'll make a plan from there.”

Hello You did not travel as well as her stablemate to California, but Loughnane was not deterred by her effort.

“The journey over there probably took a bit more out of her. She jumped, she travelled, she got a lovely run through the race. She travelled like a dream and turning for home, I thought how far does she win, then when Johnny [Velazquez] asked her she just didn't go through with it completely. She pulled up a tired horse. It took a lot out of her. She was only beaten 1 ½ lengths in a Grade I over there when she wasn't at her best.

“I have no doubt on her day she was probably the best horse in the race. She'll go for a holiday as well now and we'll come back and try for a Guineas trial with her.
