Sir Prancealot Colt Tops CTBA Northern California Sale

A Sir Prancealot colt brought $50,000 to top Wednesday's California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Northern California Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. The colt, out of the Union Rags mare Root Beer Rag, was bred by Jeff Ganje, consigned by Checkmate Thoroughbreds and was purchased by Robert Jones of San Leandro.

The highest-priced filly in the sale was by Vronsky, out of the Cyclotron mare Eden Mirelle, was bred by Ron Rand and Courtney Rand, consigned by Harris Farms, agent, and purchased by Andy Mathis for $45,000.

Next highest price was a Sir Prancealot filly sold for $40,000 to Harris Farms. Out of the Frankel mare Frankly J'ray, she was bred by consignor Checkmate Thoroughbreds.

There were 107 yearlings and 15 horses of racing age sold, with yearlings grossing $909,100 for an average of $8,496 and median of $4,500. The horses of racing age averaged $3,533 with a median of $3,000. Compared to 2021, when 30 of 123 horses failed to meet their reserve, only 12 of 134 horses did not sell during Wednesday session.

Gains at the CTBA Winter Sale

The one-day California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) Winter Mixed Sale, held Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Fairplex, closed with significant gains over the 2021 edition. A total of 113 horses were sold for gross sales of $1,298,407, with an average of $11,490 and a median of $5,200. At last year's Winter Mixed Sale, 73 horses were sold for a total of $575,100, an average of $7,878, and a median of $3,200.

Le Vron James (Vronsky–Arousing, by Cee's Tizzy) sold for a session-topping $85,000. Bred by Harris Farms and Donald Valpredo, the 2-year-old colt was bought by Dare to Dream, Don Calabria, and John Crawford. The highest-priced filly at the session was also a 2-year-old, an unnamed Gun Runner filly out of Mahogany Lane (A.P. Indy), who was purchased by Ron Thomsen for $42,000.

Le Vron James Scores At CTBA Winter Mixed Sale

Le Vron James, a 2-year-old son of the late Vronsky, sold for a session-topping $85,000 to lead sizeable year-over-year gains at Tuesday's California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Winter Mixed Sale at Fairplex.

There were 113 horses sold for gross sales of $1,298,407, an average of $11,490 and a median of $5,200. At last year's Winter Mixed Sale, 73 sold for gross sales of $575,100, an average of $7,878 and a median of $3,200.

The California-bred Vronsky colt, out of the Cee's Tizzy mare Arousing, was bred by Harris Farms and Donald Valpredo and purchased by Dare to Dream, Don Calabria, and John Crawford. He previously sold to Jeff Ganje at the 2021 CTBA Northern California Yearling Sale for $32,000.

A close second to the topper was Prince Jimmy, a California-bred son of Jimmy Creed out of the Tiznow mare Following a Dream, which sold to Super Horse, agent Sweetwater Trading, for $75,000. He was bred by Tony Busching and Carol Busching.

The highest-priced filly purchase was a 2-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Gun Runner, out of the A.P. Indy mare Mahogany Lane, purchased by Ron Thomsen for $42,000.

Stanford Filly Tops CTBA Northern California Yearling Sale

Tuesday's California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Northern California Yearling Sale posted strong gains across the board from 2020, with average yearling sales price of nearly $10,000, highest in six years.

A filly by promising new stallion Stanford was the sale topper at $45,000.

She is out of the Broken Vow mare Jeannie's Genie, bred by Michael Allen, consigned by Easterbrook Livestock and purchased by Robert Jones.

The highest-priced colt was by Vronsky, purchased by GCCI for $36,000. He is out of the Tizbud mare Just Lookn Again, was bred by West 12 Ranch, Inc. and Craig Allen and consigned by Hanson's River Ranch.

The average yearling sale price of $9,977 was nearly 40 percent higher than last year's $7,217, and is the highest since $11,537 in 2015. Gross yearling sales on Tuesday were $917,900, compared to $505,200 last year for 69 sold. The yearling median price doubled from last year's $3,000 to $6,000.
