California Chrome Full Sibling Enters Stud in California

Faversham (Lucky Pulpit–Love the Chase, by  Not For Love), a two-time winner and full-brother to two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome, has been retired from racing to stand at Daehling Ranch in Northern California. His 2021 fee is $2,000, live foal guarantee. Lifetime breeding rights are available for $4,500.

The 5-year-old was campaigned by his co-breeders, Perry and Denise Martin of Martin Racing, who also co-bred and raced California Chrome.

After standing his first three seasons in Kentucky, with two additional Southern Hemisphere stints in Chile, California Chrome was purchased privately in late 2019 by Japan-based connections, and stood at Arrow Stud in that country this year.

“Faversham overcame several obstacles, including a torn tendon, to win races in California and Kentucky for us,” Perry Martin said. “He always tried his best and managed to carve his own identity from the immense shadow cast by his big brother, who was the rarest of all Thoroughbreds–the horse of a lifetime.”

“We are thrilled to bring him home to California, where the legendary story of California Chrome started, and to offer his proven bloodlines at an affordable price for breeders on a budget.”

California Chrome Filly Impresses on Woodbine Debut

8th-Woodbine, C$83,390, Msw, 10-8, 2yo, f, 5 1/2f (AWT), 1:03.38, ft, 5 1/2 lengths.
CALIFORNIA LILY (f, 2, California Chrome–Wildcat Lily {GSW & MGISP, $477,165}, by D’wildcat) was favored at first asking by just less than $2,000 and became the sixth winner for her freshman sire (by Lucky Pulpit) with an impressive debut success in Thursday’s finale from Woodbine. Quickly into stride beneath Rafael Hernandez, the blaze-faced chestnut set the pace with a bit of pressure to her outside for the opening couple of furlongs. But she pinched a break entering the final five-sixteenths of a mile and raced a touch greenly in the stretch, but put a gap on her rivals while never asked a serious question. Her winning margin was 5 1/2 lengths. Wildcat Lily, winner of the 2013 GIII Azalea S. and second in the GI Prioress S. and GI Test S. that season, is the dam of a yearling full-sister to the winner. Sales history: $80,000 Ylg ’19 FTKJUL; $87,000 2yo ’20 OBSMAR; $35,000 2yo ’20 OBSOPN. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $32,587. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

New Winner for California Chrome at Churchill Downs

4th-Churchill Downs, $69,074, Msw, 9-20, 2yo, f, 5 1/2f, 1:04.50, ft.
DECADE (f, 2, California Chrome–Emma Carly, by Unbridled’s Song) was pounded down to 1-5  after a close-up second in her career debut at Ellis Aug. 15. Firster Color of Dawn (Exxaggerator) jumped to the lead early and Decade was hustled into a stalking position through an initial quarter in :22.82. Asked for more by Ricardo Santana Jr. leaving the far turn, the heavy favorite collared Color of Dawn and was on equal terms with her rival turning for home. Despite running greenly while remaining on her wrong lead through the length of the stretch, Decade held on to a neck advantage over Color of Dawn at the wire. Decade is the fifth winner for her GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. winning sire, California Chrome (by Lucky Pulpit). The winner’s dam, Emma Carly, is a half-sister to GSW Royale Michele (Elusive Quality). The 17-year-old mare produced a filly by Nyquist last term and was bred to Bernardini this season. Sales history: $170,000 Ylg ’19 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $52,064. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

First Winner For California Chrome Comes In Russia

Two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome was represented by his first winner at stud on Saturday, when Sunkar Time won a maiden race at Krasnodar Racetrack in Russia, Alan Carasso of Thoroughbred Daily News reports.

Sunkar Time prevailed in a 1,400-meter race (about seven furlongs), winning on debut for owner Rustam Mantikov and trainer O.S. Samokhina.

The colt was bred in Kentucky by Bruce C. Ryan, out of the multiple stakes-placed Left Banker mare Kiosk, an Ohio Broodmare of the Year whose runners include two-time Ohio Horse of the Year Needmore Flattery, stakes winner Kiosk's Cause, and stakes-placed Monetary Reward.

Sunkar Time sold to Mikhail Yanakov's Olympia Star for $14,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, and he was exported to Russia to compete under new ownership.

Krasnodar Racetrack was also the site of the first winner by Claiborne Farm resident Ironicus in June. Other stallions of note to pick up first winners in Russia include Horse of the Year and classic sire Curlin, and champion Big Brown.

California Chrome is at the end of his first season at Arrow Stud in Japan after being purchased by the JS Company LTD. last fall and exported, with high expectations for his first book of mares in his new home. He spent his first two seasons at Taylor Made Stallions in Nicholasville, Ky.

As part of the sale agreement, the California Chrome Syndicate has the first right of refusal if California Chrome is ever sold, and upon retirement from breeding, he can live out the remainder of his life at Taylor Made.

A 9-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit, California Chrome became one of the top runners of his generation during his on-track career, winning 16 of 27 starts for $14,752,650. He was named Horse of the Year in 2014 and 2016, and racked up a list of notable victories including the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Dubai World Cup, along with scores in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, Hollywood Derby, Pacific Classic Stakes, and Awesome Again Stakes.

California Chrome is out of the winning Not For Love mare Love the Chase. Champion Cascapedia is in his extended family.
