Cairo Prince Filly a ‘Rising Star’ at Del Mar

Ignored at 16-1 debuting around two turns on turf Sunday, Schroeder Farms LLC's Cairo Memories (Cairo Prince) overcame some immaturity to dominate her Del Mar rivals and earn 'TDN Rising Star'-dom.

There wasn't much on the grey's worktab to catch the eye, and she was unveiled here by the typically patient Bob Hess, Jr. outfitted with blinkers and a shadow roll. Walking out of the gate, Cairo Memories tugged her way up between horses past the stands for the first time and was in midpack and off the inside by the time they took the first turn. She continued along under a snug hold behind a :48.67 half, and was up into fourth midway around the home bend. Kent Desormeaux gave the cue to quicken after six panels in 1:13.47, and she gobbled up ground to seize the lead before streaking away under good-looking strides, bumping the margin to 4 1/2 lengths at the line. Second timer Peanut Butter Cup (Candy Ride {Arg}) completed the exacta for the Hess barn.

The 15th juvenile winner this year and third 'Rising Star' in his stallion career for Airdrie Stud's Cairo Prince, Cairo Memories is a full to Cariba, SW, $221,750, a $400,000 KEESEP yearling who won Saratoga's Caress S. last year. A $50,000 September yearling herself, Cairo Memories's Collected half-brother is cataloged as hip 1511 in this year's upcoming auction. Cairo Memories is out of a half-sister to GSW Hello Liberty (Forest Camp) and to the dam of GSW grassers Significant Form (Creative Cause) and Hay Dakota (Haynesfield).

Sacco Believes Longshot Basso Will ‘Step Up’ In Haskell

Gregg Sacco knows exactly what he's up against in the $1 million TVG.com Haskell Stakes on July 17: Three, maybe four, of the top 3-year-olds in training, all of them sharp, while he sends out a horse that tired in the slop in an allowance optional claimer on June 26 in his first start of the year.

But the veteran trainer, whose family traces its roots to the earliest days of the modern Monmouth Park, isn't deterred and will take a big swing in the Grade 1 Haskell with Basso, who quite possibly will be the longest shot in the field.

In fact, Sacco seems genuinely enthused about the opportunity, especially since this will mark his first Haskell starter in a training career that began in 1989.

“We know he is going to have to step up,” said Sacco, whose father William was Monmouth Park's leading trainer in 1962. “We're anticipating he will in his second start as a 3-year-old. We're in our backyard. We're confident he will run a respectable race.

“We'll be walking out of our barn onto the track and we'll see what happens.”

A son of Cairo Prince, Basso has just one win from five career starts, four of them at Monmouth. He broke his maiden first asking by eight lengths last Aug. 23 but has yet to produce a signature moment.

That's something many of the other expected contenders for the Haskell have had already. Mandaloun was the Kentucky Derby runner-up; Midnight Bourbon was the Preakness Stakes runner-up and Hot Rod Charlie was the Belmont Stakes runner-up. Still on the fence about the Haskell is Preakness winner Rombauer.

“All of them popped up at some point to be where they are now,” said Sacco. “They can pop up any time as a 3-year-old. We're looking for a big improvement off his first race back. He was only 70 percent that day (when he finished sixth). We knew that going in.

“He made a bold move up to the lead at the quarter pole and he just got tired. It was nasty that day with the rain and the heat, he was in post nine, and we knew going in he was in desperate need of a race. So we're taking a shot. We'll see how it goes. But we feel he will run a respectable race.”

Owned by Michael Fazio and Monmouth Stud (which is Sacco), Basso's appearance in the starting gate will make up for some of the disappointment for both men from 2019, when Joevia was scratched the day of the Haskell due to a foot injury.

Sacco said Basso will work five-eighths of a mile either Saturday or Sunday at Monmouth Park, depending on the condition of the track following heavy rain Thursday.

Gulfstream Park: $400,000 Guaranteed Jackpot For Saturday’s Rainbow 6

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $400,000 Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Friday for the seventh racing day since a lucky ticketholder broke the jackpot for a $400,000 payoff. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $263.18 Friday.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 Sequence (Races 7-12) will be headlined by the $75,000 Ginger Punch, a 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for Florida-bred fillies and mares in Race 10. Tom Proctor-trained Summering is rated as the 2-1 morning-line favorite in a field of nine, including a main-track-only entrant. The 5-year-old daughter of War Front captured the Distaff Turf for Florida-breds at Tampa Bay Downs last time out. Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Shifty She, who captured the May 15 Powder Break at Gulfstream, and Juan Alvarado-trained Key Biscayne, who is scheduled to make her 2021 debut after a most productive 3-year-old campaign last year, will both be eligible for a $25,000 win-only bonus offered to FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes-nominated starters.

Deal Go Down Joins Casse-Trained Juvenile Parade

Gabe Grossberg's Deal Go Down ($9.40) joined trainer Mark Casse's juvenile parade into the Gulfstream Park winner's circle Friday with a front-running victory in Race 2, a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds.

The son of Cairo Prince, who scored by a length under Edwin Gonzalez, was the fifth winner from seven debuting juvenile starters for the Hall of Fame trainer.

Casse, who has had a year-round presence at Gulfstream for the past several years, has enjoyed success in all categories during the Spring/Summer Meet, sending out 15 winners from 54 starters based at Palm Meadows Training Center, Gulfstream's satellite training center in Palm Beach County.

Assistant trainer Nick Tomlinson saddled Deal Go Down.

Violence Colt, Munnings Filly Top OBS March Sale’s First Session

A colt by Violence and a filly by Munnings each brought $550,000 to top the first session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

Hip No. 48, a son of Violence consigned by Kirkwood Stables, Agent went to Spendthrift Farm LLC. The dark bay or brown colt, whose eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance at Thursday's Under Tack session, is out of Lemon Belle, by Lemon Drop Kid, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Unrivaled Belle.

Hip No. 216, a daughter of Munnings who worked an eighth on Friday in :10 flat was sold to Donato Lanni, Agent. Consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, the bay filly is a half-sister to graded stakes-winning OBS graduate Aegean out of Show Me, by Lemon Drop Kid.

Hip No. 163, a son of Unified consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc., (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, was sold for $530,000 to Carolyn Wilson. The dark bay or brown colt, whose quarter on Thursday in :20 2/5 was the sale's co-fastest, is out of stakes winner Promise Me a Cat, by D'wildcat, from the family of graded stakes-placed stakes winner Tempered Halo.

Hip No. 188, a son of Cairo Prince consigned by Harris Training Center LLC, Agent, went to Narvick International for $525,000. The dark bay or brown colt by Cairo Prince, who turned in an eighth on Thursday in a co-fastest :9 4/5, is out of stakes placed Sadie Be Good, by Big Drama, from the family of graded stakes-placed stakes winner It'sallinthechase.

Hip No. 202, a son of War Front who turned in an Under Tack eighth on Friday in :10 flat, went to Ron Ellis for $525,000. The bay colt, consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, is out of stakes winner Serene Melody, by Street Cry (IRE), a daughter of champion Serena's Song.

Hip No. 243, a son of Liam's Map consigned by Pick View LLC, Agent, was sold to Narvick International for $525,000. The gray or roan colt, who breezed a quarter in:20 3/5 on Friday, is a half-brother to stakes-placed Delia O'Hara out of stakes placed Starlet O'Hara, by Discreetly Mine.

Hip No. 10, a daughter of Into Mischief consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to Yuji Hasegawa for $500,000. The bay filly, whose eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest on Thursday, is out of stakes winner Island Escape, by Petionville, and is half-sister to graded stakes winner Tricky Escape.

Yuji Hasegawa also went to $500,000 for Hip No. 224, a daughter of Into Mischief consigned by Gene Recio, Agent. The bay filly whose eighth in :9 4/5 on Friday was the session's co-fastest, is out of Sly Warrior, by First Samurai, a half sister to stakes placed Pull Dancer, dam of graded stakes winner Good Samaritan.

Hip No 259, a son of Candy Ride (ARG) who breezed an eighth on Friday in :10 flat, was sold to Yuji Hasegawa for $500,000. The bay colt, consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, out of stakes winner Supreme, by Empire Maker, is a half-brother to graded stakes-placed stakes winner Silver State, winner of the recent Essex Handicap at Oaklawn.

For the session, 163 horses sold for a total of $18,560,500 compared with 145 horses grossing $12,994,500 at last year's first session. The average price was $113,868, compared with $89,617 a year ago, while the median price was $60,000, compared with $50,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 19.7 percent; it was 39.8 percent in 2020.

The March Sale continues Wednesday, March 17 at 11 a.m. with Hip No.'s 283 – 563 set to go through the ring.
