Cairo Prince & Collected Top Airdrie’s 2022 Roster

Cairo Prince (Pioneerof the Nile) and Collected (City Zip) top Airdrie's 2022 roster, each standing for $15,000. Cairo Prince, who stood for the same price last year, has the most 2-year-old winners of any stallion this year and has a Breeders' Cup contender in Cairo Memories. Offered for a fee of $17,500 last term, Collected was represented by his first yearlings this season with several six-figure sellers.

GI Champagne S. winner Complexity (Maclean's Music) remains at $12,500 for his second season at stud. Divisidero (Kitten's Joy) and Preservationist (Arch) are also entering the second year at stud with the former at $5,000 and the latter at $10,000.

“I believe Airdrie has earned the reputation as a stallion farm that will stand behind our product and put our breeders in position to profit in the sales ring or on the race track,” said Airdrie's Bret Jones. “As always, we will be supporting our young and exciting roster with the full force of our broodmare band and take great pride in making the same investment in our stallions that we ask of our customers. The commercial breeder knows that we will not flood the market with excessively high booking numbers and racehorse owners know that our stallions throw runners. We are extremely bullish on this year's roster and look forward to working with the incredible breeders that have long supported Airdrie.”

Cairo Memories Moving Forward Toward Breeders’ Cup With Surfer Girl Triumph

A close third heading into the far turn, the Bob Hess Jr. conditioned Cairo Memories set sail for home leaving the quarter pole and was never threatened through the lane en route to a 2 ¼-length score in Sunday's $200,000 Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.  Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, the 2-year-old filly by Cairo Prince got one mile on turf in 1:34.27 and will now likely start in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

“She's been doing everything right,” said Hess.  “We were encouraged by the way she broke her maiden and she's been moving forward in her training.  Hopefully, this sets us up for the Breeders' Cup dance.”

A 4 ½-length one mile maiden turf winner in her debut Sept. 5, Cairo Memories was the second choice in a field of 11 at 4-1 and paid $10.00, $4.60 and $3.00.

“She brought some new energy from her first start,” said Desormeaux.  “I think she was excited.  I spent more time in the post parade calming her down…I worked her at Del Mar and before I ever rode her I thought she was great…I was with the owners in the paddock and that was the longest wait because I wanted to see how deep the water was, and she's shown (now) that she could really swim.”

Owned by David Bernsen, LLC and Schroeder Farms, LLC, Cairo Memories, who is out of the Indian Charlie mare Incarnate Memories, picked up $120,000 for the win, hiking her earnings to $162,000.

The 3-2 favorite with Flavien Prat, Irish-bred Helens Well rallied from next to last to finish second by a neck over Hemmerle and paid $3.00 and $2.40.

Off at 12-1 with Joe Bravo, Hemmerle was out-run late to finish third by a neck over Irish-bred Sterling Crest and paid $5.40 to show.

Fractions on the race were 22.14, 45.72, 1:10 flat and 1:22.26.

Seven horses make their career debut in this potential-laden nine-horse field, headed by PROTONIC POWER (Protonico), part of an uncoupled entry for the Todd Pletcher barn. The other half of the Pletcher duo is Al Shaqab Racing's narrow morning-line favorite Afjan (Uncle Mo). The homebred is the second foal to race out of GSW/MGISP Scarlet Strike (Smart Strike), following this year's British G3 Supreme S. hero Toro Strike (Toronado {Ire}). Scarlet Strike is also a half-sister to Grade I winners Tara's Tango (Unbridled's Song) and Visionaire (Grand Slam). Afjan most recently breezed a sharp five furlongs from the gate over the local training track in 1:00 3/5 (2/28) Sept. 10. Cairama (Cairo Prince) turned heads at OBS March when breezing a furlong in :9 4/5 before hammering for $525,000, 35 times her sire's stud fee and debuts from the rail for the red-hot Steve Asmussen barn. Pegged as a 15-1 longshot on the morning line in his career bow for Nick Zito, Atlantic Thoroughbreds' Atlantic Dancer (American Pharoah) is a half-brother to last year's GII Tampa Bay Derby hero and GI Arkansas Derby runner-up King Guillermo (Uncle Mo) and hammered for $400,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. Royal Prince Granted Win In Caesars Stakes After DQ

Royal Prince and Fernando De La Cruz pulled in a win Wednesday, Sept. 8 in the $150,000 Caesars Stakes. The race was the highlight of the 11-race card that included four stakes on the card and marked the richest day of turf racing in the state of Indiana.

Starting from post four in the reduced field of five, Royal Prince got away second behind Dyn O Mite and Jose Riquelme, following along in a stalking position throughout the one-mile turf event. At the head of the stretch, Royal Prince made his move and at first, looked like he would go right on by as the selected favorite of the field. However, Dyn O Mite came back to challenge. The duo battled the entire length of the stretch in close quarters with Dyn O Mite getting the last call by a half-length. However, contact between the two switched the order after a disqualification and moved Royal Prince up for the win. Perfect Silent Cat and Luca Panici, making his first start at Indiana Grand, finished third. The time of the race was 1:35.26.

Royal Prince is now three for eight in 2021 and four for 11 lifetime. He is owned by Steve Landers Racing LLC and trained by Brad Cox. He moved his career earnings over the $300,000 mark with the win. The grey son of Cairo Prince, a $70,000 yearling purchase is now a two-time stakes winner.

“This horse is always solid and showed today that he is that caliber of horse,” said Ricky Giannini, assistant trainer for Brad Cox who oversees the string at Indiana Grand. “He is stationed at Keeneland so he may go there for his next start.”

The Caesars Stakes was complemented by Empire of Hope, a Caesars Entertainment Racing initiative to bring funding and awareness to racehorse aftercare programs. Nearly $14,000 was raised through several promotions and donations geared toward the cause. A special presentation showing the support was held in the winner's circle with Randy Klopp, Indiana HBPA member and past president, Rachel McLaughlin, On-Air Racing Analyst, and Eric Halstrom, Vice President and General Manager of Racing at Indiana Grand.

The 19th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is now in progress and continues through Monday, Nov. 8. Live racing is conducted at 2:25 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, with first post on Thursday set at 3:25 p.m. A special Indiana Champions Day highlighting the state's top Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at noon.
