Doyle Brings Up The Guineas Double On Cachet

James Doyle took his buoyant mood from Saturday's G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas win on Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) into Sunday's G1 Qipco 1000 Guineas and got the same result as he steered Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's 16-1 shot Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) to an all-the-way success in the Newmarket Classic. Third behind Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the course-and-distance G1 Fillies' Mile in October, the George Boughey-trained TDN Rising Star had come back to win the seven-furlong G3 Nell Gwyn S. here Apr. 12 and relished her front-running role on her biggest stage yet at this venue she adores. Staying on strongly enough to hold the Fillies' Mile runner-up Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) by a neck, it was left to Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to fill the places, 1 3/4 lengths away in third as her stablemate and 11-4 favourite Tenebrism (Caravaggio) failed to threaten in eighth. “I'm not quite so emotional today as I was yesterday, but it's still very much enjoyable and great for Highclere and George and his team,” the winning rider said. “George felt she'd see the mile out better as she had developed stronger over the winter and she loves it here. She almost eyes up the dip and flies through it like its not there.”

It was the fifth time that a jockey had completed the 2000/1000 Guineas double in the same year since 1967. Ryan Moore had booted home Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Legatissimo (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in 2015 and Kieren Fallon scooped his double aboard Footstepsinthesand (GB) (Giant's Causeway) and Virginia Waters (Kingmambo) in 2005. Prior to that, the legendary Lester Piggott had done the same with British Triple Crown hero Nijinsky II (Northern Dancer) and Humble Duty (GB) (Sovereign Path {GB}) in 1970. Jockey George Moore turned that trick just three years earlier in 1967 with Royal Palace (GB) (Ballymoss {GB}) and Fleet II (Ire) (Immortality {GB}).

Earning TDN Rising Star status with a 5 1/2-length debut success here last May, Cachet took the usual road to Royal Ascot and was met by the storm which delivered the relentless rain that blighted the Friday of the meeting in the G3 Albany S. Not disgraced when fifth there, she was back in town eight days later for the July Course's Listed Empress S. and failed to inspire when third before moving up to seven to fill the same spot in the Listed Pat Eddery S. returning to Ascot on the King George undercard. Rested until the G3 Prix d'Aumale over a mile at ParisLongchamp in early September, her star had appeared to dim as she was only seventh but there was renewed hope as she ran second to Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in the G2 Rockfel S. reverting to seven back at this track later that month. Her subsequent effort in the Fillies' Mile was another step forward, as was a fourth at Del Mar when attempting to make all in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Throughout the three days of the Guineas meeting, it had paid to be prominent or on the lead and Doyle had the equivalent of a perfect storm as he set off on the willing Cachet. Chased by Discoveries (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), Prosperous Voyage and Tuesday throughout, she had that trio in trouble passing halfway before turning the screw on old rival Hello You soon after. As Frankie kept working on the Ballydoyle second-string, he could only observe as the finish was decided between the two fillies who had been in the wake of his beloved Inspiral back in October with nothing able to close out of the pack.

Cachet's rookie trainer Boughey was basking in the breakthrough moment afterwards and paid tribute to the winner's constitution. “She's made of iron,” he said. “She was a bit of a bridesmaid last year, but has taken her form to another level and been improving. She had a problem with the gates at the end of last year, but has settled down and is more sound mentally as well as physically. It's hard to pick faults in her–she thrives on her racing and the next morning after the Nell Gwyn she was bouncing around. I gave her a break in the middle of last summer and probably left her a bit short for France and she kept improving afterwards. She loves fast ground and we'll probably go to Ascot [for the June 17 G1 Coronation S.] next.”

“It's a long year and that gives her a nice gap as I'd like to end up at the Breeders' Cup again at the back end of the year,” Boughey added. “She's a group one winner over a mile now and she can go anywhere in the world, which is massive. The fact that she likes fast ground makes her a global filly which is huge for us and huge for her, so it's very exciting. It sounds bizarre coming out of my mouth! It's pretty surreal.”

Trainer Ralph Beckett said of the runner-up Prosperous Voyage, “We just ran out of road, but that is life. It was a terrific effort and she will probably go a mile and a quarter now. She is in the [G1] Prix Saint-Alary and that might be an option. I never felt she would get further than 10 furlongs, but we will see.” Aidan O'Brien said of his pair, “Tuesday ran very well and we are delighted with her run. The Oaks is possible, but she could go to an Irish 1000 Guineas on the way. Ryan [Moore] said it was a little bit rough early for Tenebrism and that might have taken its toll on her, but we will get her home and see. There is always a chance that the trip might have been too far, but we will get back and see but we thought she would get the mile. There are still plenty of big days for her.”

Having been her sire's first winner, Cachet has paid her second-crop sire the ultimate compliment here. She is the third foal out of Poyle Sophie (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), a half-sister to Poyle Meg (GB) (Dansili {GB}) who was responsible for the GIII San Francisco Mile winner and GII Mathis Brothers Mile third Whisper Not (GB) (Poet's Voice {GB}). This is also the family of the G2 Lowther S. winner Jemima (GB) (Owington {GB}) and her sire son English Colony (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) and GII Fantasy S.-placed daughter Jemima's Pearl (Distorted Humor). Poyle Sophie has a 2-year-old filly by Kuroshio (Aus) and a yearling filly by Cotai Glory (GB).

All To Play For In The 1000 Guineas

After the decision to avoid the stress of a G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas examination for Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the latest renewal of the Newmarket Classic has become open season for up-and-comers in the miling division. Very few of the 14 left in the race can be safely discounted and with a filly unproven beyond six furlongs at the head of the market, it is fair to say that anything can happen in this one. There were shades of Ravinella (Mr. Prospector) in the way Ballydoyle's number one and 'TDN Rising Star' Tenebrism (Caravaggio) went through the G1 Cheveley Park S. here in September, but there is a definite question mark over the mile for her and the performance of Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) here on Saturday was an untimely blow to that form. “She is unproven beyond six furlongs and maybe some have pegged her as a sprinter, but there is only one way to find out and that is on Sunday,” Ryan Moore said. “In terms of raw ability, we are happy with where she sits in the pecking order.”

Will Danehill's Record Fall?

Aidan O'Brien tends to win mile Classics with stouter-bred individuals, which brings in Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) but there is a feeling that the reality of winning a 1000 Guineas will be too much too soon as she builds experience ahead of an Oaks tilt. The Naas maiden winner shaped as the better filly when second to Discoveries (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) on her sole juvenile start and if she has made the leap she will be providing Galileo with the world record of stakes winners. This would be a stage fitting for such a landmark, and Ballydoyle's go-to rider Frankie Dettori only adds to the equation. “We are happy with where she is, as we didn't think we would be in this position with her four weeks ago,” the Ballydoyle handler admitted recently.

Setting The Scene

In an edition dominated by Irish and French-trained fillies, it looks a tall order for the home team to arrest the overseas momentum. The top-rated quartet among them are the quartet who chased home Inspiral in the course-and-distance G1 Fillies' Mile in October, and while Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), 'TDN Rising Star' Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}), Mise En Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) and Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}) are all solid proposals here they all have something to find. Mise En Scene provides James Ferguson with a first Classic runner and he is understandably hopeful that the Qatar Racing and Racehorse Club-owned G3 Prestige S. winner could be at least a bit player in this play. “I honestly think it is the most open 1000 Guineas I can remember,” he said. “It is wonderful to have a filly this good and she deserves to be the shortest-priced British runner. The fact she has got stamina in her pedigree will help her.”

Guineas Set For Frexit?

This is a big year for Francis-Henri Graffard, who has been handed the golden opportunity of taking over the famous Aiglemont stables, and in Everest Racing, Barbara Keller and David Redvers's Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) he has a strong chance of making waves in this important monument. Building slowly to a crescendo last term, she went from a soft-ground win in the six-furlong G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte at Chantilly in October to a barnstorming finish when second in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on a firm surface over this trip at Del Mar the following month. She put her compatriot Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in her place in the Apr. 7 G3 Prix Imprudence at Deauville, which during the 1980s was the launchpad used by Criquette Head for her Guineas heroines Ma Biche and Ravinella and by François Boutin for the great Miesque. “I couldn't have her in better form,” Graffard said. “She came on a lot from her seasonal debut and she's very well. When it comes to the ground, she's a very versatile filly and hopefully she is good enough for a race like this.”

The Supporting Cast

There is abundant intrigue away from the Guineas, with ParisLongchamp staging the G1 Prix Ganay where the G2 Prix d'Harcourt one-two-three Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) and Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}) re-oppose. Sir Michael Stoute, a master in races like the G2 Betfair Exchange Dahlia S., looks to Chris Humber and Hunscote Stud's G3 Pride S. winner Ville de Grace (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) to provide him with a seventh renewal of Newmarket's nine-furlong test. In Germany, the G3 Bavarian Classic at Munich sees the latest potential Gestut Schlenderhan star step forward in the impressive Dusseldorf scorer So Moonstruck (Ger) (Sea the Moon {Ger}); while John and Thady Gosden who appear to have several Oaks hopefuls and saddle Juddmonte's Crenelle (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the 10-furlong Listed Pretty Polly S. on the Guineas undercard.

Tenebrism Tops 16 in 1000 Guineas

Undefeated Tenebrism (Caravaggio) is the 11-4 early choice among 16 confirmations for Sunday's Qipco 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Long-time ante-post favourite Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was ruled out of the fillies' Classic Sunday. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, the G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine will attempt to give the trainer his sixth win in the race in seven years. O'Brien may also be represented by maiden winners Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Included among Irish-breds who are also possible to run Sunday are Group 3 winner Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and G1 Moyglare Stud S. victress Discoveries (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), a full-sister to Irish 1000 Guineas scorer Alpha Centuri, also trained by Jessica Harrington. Homeless Song, tackling a mile for the first time, may sidestep Sunday's race in favor of the French equivalent May 15. However, one likely to favour of staying local rather than a trip to ParisLongchamp is G3 Fred Darling S. winner Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is Godolphin's sole representative in the race.

Represented by his first Classic runner, James Ferguson is on course to saddle G3 Prestige S. scorer Mise En Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), fourth in the Fillies' Mile over the 1000 Guineas track and trip, before running down the field when making the trip to Del Mar for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

David Redvers, racing manager for Qatar Racing, who own the filly, explained, “She was possibly unlucky not to finish second at Newmarket. If she finished second, she would be among favouritism at the moment.”

“The race didn't work out at all for her in the Breeders' Cup. She was poorly drawn, went forward, was pushed wide and the whole thing was a non-event.”

Mise En Scene, currently an 11-1 chance with Coral for the Guineas, will be reunited with Cieren Fallon.

“Oisin Murphy rode her in a piece of work on Tuesday morning and was delighted with her,” he said. “She seems to have come forward very well. She hardly blew a candle out afterwards and didn't get out of second gear, apparently,” added Redvers.

“We know she handles Newmarket and a straight mile should not provoke any problems at all. You never know until fillies run how they are going to go.”

“Physically and mentally, she has appeared to have done extremely well and we can only hope and keep our fingers crossed that she gets a bit of luck in running and proves how good she is.”

Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), runner-up on Breeders' Cup day last fall, bested Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) when they met in Deauville's G3 Prix Imprudence on heavy ground last month and the duo could meet again. Tom Marquand gets the call on the latter.

Also included in the Classic lineup are G3 Nell Gwyn S. heroine Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}), who bids to give trainer George Boughey his first Classic success, Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), and recent maiden winner Ameynah (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}).

Seven Days: Advance Appleby Fair

As statements of intent go, the results for Charlie Appleby's stable over recent weeks speak loudly as to his determination to retain the trainers' championship in 2022.

Twenty-three runners have emerged from Moulton Paddocks in the last fortnight, and 13 of them have returned home as winners, most importantly Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), the champion 2-year-old in Europe last year whose triumph return in the G3 Craven S. got the season off on a proper footing.

Of that baker's dozen, four were by the trainer's reliable old friend Dubawi (Ire), whose name must feature more than any other on doorcards around Moulton Paddocks. Appleby does seemingly have a new best friend, though, in Frankel (GB). The Juddmonte star played a hugely important role in helping the trainer to his first championship, just as he sealed his own first sires' championship with Godolphin's Derby-winning duo of Adayar (Ire) and Hurricane Lane (Ire) in the vanguard.

Frankel's offspring are appearing increasingly frequently in the royal blue silks, with his daughter Wild Beauty having won the G3 Fred Darling S. at Newbury, where the colt Natural World–bred on the same Frankel-Dubawi cross as Adayar–impressed on debut. In Tuesday's Cazoo Blue Riband Trial at Epsom, Appleby will saddle another son of Frankel, Nahanni (GB), the easy winner of a 1m4f novice contest at Leicester earlier this month.

As we await the return of Adayar in the Coronation Cup and Hurricane Lane in the Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot, in the wings Appleby has another 10 Frankel juveniles listed in training, including Adayar's full-brother named Military Order (Ire).

Those few people on course in the early morning last Wednesday witnessed the racecourse gallop of Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who swerved the Greenham S., with his trainer's reasoning being that he wanted to remain at Newmarket with the colt who has won on each of the town's two courses but has never run elsewhere. The guessing game now begins as to whether Coroebus might be able to overhaul his stable-mate Native Trail in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas after the latter became the third Craven S. winner for Appleby in the last four runnings of the race, following Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Breezing Into Contention

One young racegoer who was perhaps as thrilled as Charlie Appleby to see Native Trail return in such fine style was Josh Williamson, the son of Norman and Janet Williamson who sold the unbeaten colt through their Oak Tree Farm draft at the 2021 Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Sale a year to the day before his victory in the Craven itself.

The 15-year-old schoolboy certainly has the pedigree to be a decent rider, and indeed he was entrusted to be aboard Native Trail for much of his work leading up to the sale. It was touching to see Josh's input into the horse's early career acknowledged by Appleby as he strode into the winner's enclosure and immediately went over to shake his hand and congratulate him.

We're betwixt breeze-up sales at the moment, with the Craven completed last week, and the horses for the Goffs UK Sale on Thursday set to breeze at Doncaster on Tuesday. That sector of the market could hardly have had a better advertisement than the results on course over the last week.

Not only did Native Trail fly the flag, but so too did Highclere Racing's G3 Nell Gwyn S. winner Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}), as well as the G3 Greenham S. winner Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}), who was bred, like the runner-up Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), by the seemingly unstoppable force that is Tally-Ho Stud. These followed the previous week's G3 Prix Imprudence victory of Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), another Tally-Ho-bred breezer who appears to be on course for the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Yet another Tally-Ho star graduate kept the ball rolling over the weekend when the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) returned for her 4-year-old debut at Keeneland with a classy win in the Listed Giant's Causeway S. Once again, trainer Wesley Ward looks to have been dealt a strong hand for his annual Royal Ascot challenge, with Campanelle being pointed towards the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. and the free-running speedball Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) heading to the G1 King's Stand S.–and that's before we consider Ward's juvenile contenders.

Trainers In Form

It should be noted that there are currently two Applebys in the top four in the British trainers' ranks, the other being Michael Appleby, no relation to Charlie and narrowly ahead of him following another excellent winter campaign which saw him crowned champion all-weather trainer for the fourth year in a row. Based in Leicestershire, Michael Appleby's stable may not feature as many bluebloods as some of his rivals in the table, but over the last decade it has become an operation which should be taken very seriously indeed, with Michael surpassing the 100-winner mark for the first time in 2021. Expect more of the same this time around.

Another trainer to have enjoyed a good week was Roger Varian, whose statuesque  Eydon (GB) was a rare winner for the veteran Olden Times (GB) in the Listed Feilden S. at Newmarket.  Having broken his maiden in some style on his third start, Eydon, whose name is taken from Eydon Hall Farm where he was born and raised, has the Classics on his agenda.

“I did worry when we named him that it could be a disaster,” said Prince Faisal's racing and bloodstock manager Ted Voute with a grin after the colt romped to a comfortable victory at Newmarket.

Olden Times, now 24 and the winner of the G1 Prix Jean Prat for the owner/breeder, has had several homes during his stud career but has been at Throckmorton Court Stud for the last five years, where he is essentially used as a private stallion by the prince.

Voute added, “We bred a mare to him the other day. We're sending him two mares this year and hoping for fillies.”

Varian was also represented at the Craven meeting by the Godolphin-bred maiden winner Ameynah (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), who holds a 1000 Guineas entry, while last season's G2 Champagne S. winner Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) will head straight to either Newmarket or ParisLongchamp for a Classic attempt without taking in a trial.

Ameynah wasn't the smartest daughter of Exceed And Excel on the Rowley Mile last week, however, as the Chris Wall-trained Double Or Bubble (Ire) took the G3 Abernant S. for owner/breeder Salah Fustok of Deerfield Farm. Lightly-raced for a 5-year-old, Double Or Bubble has done little wrong during her 11 starts, only ever finishing out of the first two twice, and winning five times, including last year's Listed Flying Fillies' S at Pontefract.

Wall, one of the most under-rated trainers in Newmarket who also trained this mare's full-sister, the G3 Chartwell Fillies' S. winner Mix And Mingle (Ire), outlined that after an “old school” winter being turned out back at Deerfield, Double Or Bubble has both strengthened and quickened. He is considering the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. for the mare's next start.

My Oh My

My Titania (Ire) already owns a footnote in history as the first stakes winner for her illustrious sire Sea The Stars (Ire) back in 2013, and as a broodmare she has had a fruitful week thanks to her first three foals, all of whom are trained by William Haggas for the Tsui family.

The first off the production line, 5-year-old My Oberon (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), won the All-Weather Mile Championships at Newcastle on Good Friday having finished a respectable sixth in a competitive running of the G1 Dubai Turf on March 26. The mare's 3-year-old, My Prospero (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), was a winner at the second time of asking in a Newbury maiden on Saturday and could head next for the Listed Heron S. at Sandown in May.

Meanwhile, 4-year-old My Astra (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) picked up another slice of black type when third in the Listed Snowdrop Fillies' S. at Kempton. A lateish starter during July of last year, she won her first two races before finishing runner-up in the Listed Prix Solitude. There's surely more to come from this lightly-raced filly, who holds a G2 Dahlia S. entry on Guineas weekend.

Hit And Mist For Kildaragh

Also featuring prominently among the results of the last seven days is the Kavanagh family's Kildaragh Stud, most notably as the breeder of the winner of the Listed Snowdrop Fillies' S., Roman Mist (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). The 4-year-old provided her young trainer Tom Ward with his first stakes victory when winning in the colours of Hot To Trot Racing.

Last Thursday, a brace of Kildaragh Stud graduates, both 3-year-olds by Churchill (Ire), returned to winner's enclosures of Newmarket and Ripon respectively. Tuscan (Ire), who struck last year at Thirsk for John and Jess Dance, took the British EBF Conditions S. for Charlie Hills, and this was followed less than an hour later by victory for the Richard-Fahey-trained Blenheim Boy (Ire) in the Cock o' the North H.

Meanwhile Roderick Kavanagh, son of Kildaragh owners Peter and Antoinette, had a successful week with his Glending Stables draft at the Craven Breeze-up Sale, selling all four horses for an average of 87,500gns.

Horton Won't Hear A Who

The well-liked James Horton left his position as Sir Michael Stoute's long-term assistant last year to start training in his own right for John and Jess Dance at Manor House Farm in Middleham, the birthplace of the Derby winner Dante. And on Monday, Horton ensured that his name will soon be widely known by announcing his presence on British racing's stage with his first three winners all on the same afternoon at Redcar.

The first came in the opening race, a novice event won by Phantom Flight (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), who had finished runner-up on debut on March 25 as the trainer's first runner. Horton was back for more in the fourth and fifth races on the card, winning with Il Bandito (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) and Asjad (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}). He also came close to securing a four-timer when Ghost Rider (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) finished second by half a length at Wolverhampton.

On a day to remember for the trainer and owners, John Dance also announced on Twitter on Monday that his superstar mare Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) produced her second foal, a filly by Kingman (GB), overnight.
