Q&A with Zach Madden of Buckland Sales

When Zach Madden announced Tuesday he is now the sole owner of Buckland Sales, as partner Ro Parra has decided to step back, we figured there might be more than the basic story put out to the public. Jen Roytz learned it's a feel-good story–someone using the success they've had to help others carve their path.

JR: How did the idea of Buckland Sales come about?

ZM: The idea came organically between myself and Millennium Farms back in the fall [of] 2015. I was doing a lot of different things on the farm, which I am fond of, but I wanted to devote my entire focus to the sales.

That's where my passion truly lies and where my skillset and personality fit best. I wanted to focus all my time and energy on what I love.

JR: Has Buckland developed and evolved the way you and Ro envisioned?

ZM: Yes. From the beginning we wanted it to grow, but we wanted to be strategic about the growth so it never evolved faster than we could manage well. The growth has been very solid going into our sixth year. Ideally, I'd like to be big enough to hold our own and represent the sport's top prospects, yet small enough that we are always able to give each customer and horse the personalized experience Buckland was created to offer.

Consigning horses is ultra-competitive. There are a lot of truly good consignors out there that I respect and admire. My goal is for others to hold us in that same esteem.

JR: What does it mean to have Ro entrust Buckland to you?

ZM: I'm very appreciative of what Ro was able to contribute as a business partner. He has been a successful entrepreneur in several industries and the lessons he taught me will serve me well throughout my life.

In any industry, but especially with horses, it's not just a business. It's personal. It's about having relationships built on respect, skill and communication. It's about being as good as you can possibly be at what you've chosen to do, and it's about how you approach and work through challenges…finding the opportunity in adversity.

As appreciative as I am to Ro for all he's contributed to Buckland and taught me personally, I'm even more appreciative of his friendship. He knows I will be pinging him for advice and I look forward to celebrating both of our successes and milestones as time goes on.

JR: After the market has such a strong resurgence in 2021 after 2020, what are your predictions for the consignment market in the coming year?

ZM: If the last couple years have taught us anything, it's to take nothing for granted.

I think we were all very appreciative of the vibrant market in 2021. I feel the trends should continue. The horse business and the people in it are very resilient. Hopefully the market stays resilient as well.

JR: Based on what you saw from their first yearlings last year, which freshman sires do you think will make headlines this year?

ZM: Bolt d'Oro–I really loved the physicals on his yearlings last year. They were strong and athletic.

JR: If you could make one simple change to the industry, what would it be?

ZM: More uniformity. I think this could be applied to various sectors in different ways, but at the core, I think the more we can strive toward uniformity, the better, stronger and more appealing to outside participants we will be.

JR: What advice would you give to someone looking for a consignor for their bloodstock?

ZM: Get a consignor who can give you and your horse(s) personal attention. Dig deeper than looking at websites or what they say on social media. Have the conversations and ask the right questions to find someone who genuinely cares about your results and that you can trust.

JR: Did you have any New Year's resolutions for 2022?

ZM: Lose 20 pounds. Check back with me at the yearling sales for a progress report.

JR: Who's your early Derby pick for this year?

ZM: Pappacap (Gun Runner). He traveled around, danced every dance and proved that he's very game.

Madden Now Sole Proprietor at Buckland Sales

Buckland Sales agency, which has been operating as a partnership between Ro Parra and Zach Madden, will now be run solely by the latter, as Parra will be stepping back from his role with the consignment company. The announcement comes the year after Parra consolidated his commercial breeding, boarding and stallion operations at Millennium Farms in Lexington to focus on his family and his own racing and breeding portfolio.

“Ro has been a tremendous business partner and mentor to me over the years and I am thankful to also call him a friend,” said Madden. “We all have a handful of people we come across in our lives who have a profound impact on our thinking and the lens through which we view the world. Ro is one of those people for me. His business acumen and guidance has been a huge asset.”

Parra and Madden, who had previously worked at Three Chimneys, launched Buckland Sales in 2015.

“I am a big believer in Zach's skills and capabilities,” said Parra. “Zach has spent the past six years building the foundation of Buckland Sales and it was my honor to support him in that. This transition is something we have planned for a long time, and I will continue to consign my own horses under the Buckland banner.”

Since presenting its inaugural consignment at Keeneland November in 2015, Buckland has been represented at all major North American yearling and breeding stock sales, its graduates including the likes of Biddy Duke, Chocolate Martini and GI Runhappy Travers S. runner-up Caracaro.

“We have been measured about how to grow Buckland, focusing on quality over quantity. With Morgan [Kei] assisting our customers and staff, Gustavo [Calleja] and our team at the sales and now Lauren [Morgan] coming on this year as our director of bloodstock, I couldn't ask for a better, more capable team,” said Madden. “With a strong draft to present this week at Keeneland, I am excited about the future for sure.”

Lauren Morgan Named Director of Bloodstock at Buckland Sales

Lauren Morgan has joined Buckland Sales Agency as Director of Bloodstock. In her new role, she will handle client relations, horse evaluations and other bloodstock services for the consignment agency.

Morgan, who is a native of Troy, Michigan, most recently worked for Vinery Sales as a Sales and Bloodstock Consultant. Prior to that, she handled client relations and bloodstock services for Darby Dan Farm.

Morgan is a graduate of Michigan State University, during which time she completed an internship with Shadwell Farm in Lexington, Kentucky and fell in love with the Bluegrass and Kentucky's Thoroughbred industry.

“I made it a point to gain as much experience as I could in all aspects of the industry after graduating college,” she said. “I felt it was necessary to understand the importance of every job in the business, which helps me be well-rounded and appreciative of the roles that we all play in the lives of these horses. I grew to love sales and knew that I had found my niche when I started to develop my own client base. The personal relationships I have formed with my clients and seeing all of their hard work pay off in the sales ring is what makes me love this part of the business. My clients are like family and when they succeed, there is no greater feeling.”

Buckland Sales' principal Zach Madden launched the consignment agency in 2015.

“Horsemanship is such a huge part of our industry,” Madden said. “Over the 10 years I worked at Three Chimneys, the first seven of those were spent in the barn, working hands-on with horses. You can't put a number value on that kind of experience–it's exponential. Lauren has worked incredibly hard to gain hands-on experience with some of the best operations in the game. I feel incredibly fortunate to have her on our team and I am very excited for Buckland's future.”

Medaglia d’Oro Colt a New TDN Rising Star in France

Godolphin's Arqana Breeze-Up@Doncaster £675,000 sale topper Chancellery (Ire) (Medaglia d'Oro) was all the rage for Thursday's Prix de Fontenoy at ParisLongchamp and justified odds-on favouritism in the one-mile newcomers' test to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status with an impressive debut performance. The 7-10 pick shuffled for early positioning and found a slot stalking the pace in second by halfway. Looming large on the bridle approaching the quarter-mile marker, he was comfortably on top with 250 metres remaining and powered clear under minimal coaxing before gearing down to easily outclass Woozle (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) by 2 1/2 lengths.

Chancellery is the first of three foals produced by Listed River Memories S. winner Shelbysmile (Smart Strike), who was purchased by Mags O'Toole, on behalf of Lynn Lodge Stud, for 275,000gns at Tattersalls December in 2019. She is a half-sister to G2 Al Fahidi Fort victor Derbaas (Seeking the Gold), G3 Jebel Ali Mile scorer Chiefdom (The Factor) and to the dam of GIII Dowager S. victrix Blame Debbie (Blame). His second dam Sultana (Storm Cat) is a winning full-sister to MG1SW European champion Aljabr out of G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Sierra Madre (Fr) (Baillamont).
