OBS Winter Mixed Sale Kicks Off Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company kicks off their 2021 season Tuesday with the two-day OBS Winter Mixed Sale. Tuesday's session starts with a 183-head consignor-preferred session which will be immediately followed by a 120-head Horses of Racing Age session. Wednesday's open session consists of 354 horses and is a mix of broodmares and short yearlings. Both sessions start at 10:30 a.m.

Those numbers include late supplements. The supplemental catalogues will be available on the grounds and those additional horses will sell immediately following the original catalogue.

“We are cautiously optimistic,” OBS's Tod Wojciechowski said. “We have a good book of yearlings and mares, as well as some nice racing age options. We saw some bright spots in [Keeneland] January and hopefully some of those bright spots carry down here.”

Covering stallions include Enticed, Collected, Speightster and Tapit, as well as Florida-based stallions, such as St. Patrick's Day, Khozan and Girvin. Short yearlings on offer include the offspring of such stallions as Accelerate, Always Dreaming, Bolt d'Oro, Constitution, Into Mischief and Mendelssohn.

During Monday's under-tack preview of the auction, a pair of colts shared the fastest three-furlong work of :32 2/5.

Load to Fire (More Than Ready), hip 306, an unraced 4-year-old colt, worked his :32 2/5 three furlongs for consignor Woodard Sales. Hip 315, an unraced 3-year-old colt by Distorted Humor, worked in :32 2/5 for consignor Oscar Brown Stables.

Four horses enter the Winter sales ring off recent wins on the racetrack. Pledge (Candy Ride {Arg}) (hip 360) broke her maiden by 6 1/2 lengths at Turfway Park Jan. 2; Kramden (Kitten's Joy) (hip 362) won at Tampa Bay Downs Sunday; Bear Brian (Tiznow) (hip 368) broke his maiden on debut at Sam Houston Race Park Jan. 9; and Lower for Longer (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) (hip 370) broke her maiden at Tampa Bay Downs Sunday.

The 2020 renewal of this auction generated $4,957,800 of turnover from 359 transactions with an average of $13,810 and median of $7,000. The sales-topper was a $165,000 yearling colt by Union Rags, who was purchased by Blue Sky Stables.

OBS will continue to implement COVID-19 safety protocols and provide online bidding.

“We are still committed to trying to provide the safest environment possible,” Wojciechowski said “We will continue with the COVID protocols we initiated last year. In addition, there will be a mask mandate for inside the building and the back walking ring. It is obviously something we have to deal with. That is one reason the online bidding was implemented, so buyers unable or unwilling to travel can still shop.”

2021 Juddmonte Mating Plans Revealed

The 2021 mating plans for the Juddmonte broodmare band were announced by the nursery on Monday. Juddmonte will stand five stallions in 2021 led by Frankel.

The undefeated wunderkind and Group 1 sire Frankel became the fastest European stallion ever to reach 40 group winners and celebrated another Group 1 winner in 2020-Grenadier Guards (Jpn). An even two dozen Juddmonte mares are booked on his dance card, among them MG1SW Ventura (Chester House), the dam of Group 3 winner Fount (GB) (Frankel {GB}); G1SW Emulous (GB) (Dansili {GB}); Bird Flown (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), the dam of MG1SW and Classic hero Siskin (First Defence); and Group 1 winner Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB})'s dam Nimble Thimble (Mizzen Mast). His book is enhanced by Group 2 winners Soffia (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) and Modern Look (GB) (Zamindar), as well as Group 3 winners Big Break (GB) (Dansili {GB]), Dandhu (GB) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and Visit (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

The sire of three Group 1 winners in 2020, Kingman will also welcome top-flight winners Capla Temptress (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), Passage of Time (GB) (Dansili {GB}), Romantica (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Samba Inc (Arg) (Include), and Special Duty (GB) (Hennessy). There are also a pair of Group 2 winners visiting the high-class miler in Lucky Kristale (GB) (Lucky Story), herself a half-sister to the dual Classic heroine Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and Riposte (GB) (Dansili {GB}); while Group 3 winners Hot Snap (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Sun Maiden (GB) (Frankel {GB}); and Helleborine (GB) (Observatory), the dam of the brilliant Calyx (GB) are also booked. The first foals of Group 1-winning miler Expert Eye (GB) are now yearlings and Juddmonte continues to support the GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner at stud. The Group 1-placed Principal Role (Empire Maker) and fellow listed winners Scottish Jig (Speightstown), and Swiss Range (GB) (Zamindar) will visit the bay son of Acclamation (GB). Kilo Alpha (GB) (King's Best), the dam of the GSW & G1SP Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}); Photographic (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), herself the dam of Group 3 winner Shutter Speed (GB) (Dansili {GB}); a full-sister to Showcasing (GB) in Palmette (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}); and Strelka (GB) (Kingman {GB}), a half-sister to Derby/Arc hero Workforce (GB) (King's Best); are also slated to be covered by Expert Eye.

The developing sire Bated Breath (GB) sired Group 1 winner Viadera (GB) last term and he also has His Highness The Aga Khan's homebred GSW and G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud placer Makaloun (Fr) to go to bat for him in 2021 as a leading G1 French Derby hope. Viadera's dam, Sacred Shield (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}), Group 1 winner Proportional (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}), Group 3 winner Tested (GB) (Selkirk) and listed winners Alocasia (GB) (Kingman {GB}), and Rostova (Arch) and the unraced Meridiana (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) will all be covered by Bated Breath this year. The last-named is out of Group 1 winner Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Oasis Dream (GB) has now sired 200 stakes performers and is becoming a broodmare sire of note with four Group 1 winners in 2020. Juddmonte is sending the winning pair of Bonne Idee (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Its a Given (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), as well as Occurrence (GB) (Frankel {GB}), an unraced daughter of Arrive (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}), a full-sister to Hasili (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}). Shared Account (GB) (Dansili {GB}) will also return to Oasis Dream and she has already produced the Group 2-placed Sand Share (GB) and Group 3-winning Pocket Square (GB) to the roster veteran.

Naturally, some of Juddmonte's blueblooded broodmares are also visiting outside stallions, with Enable's dam Concentric (GB) (Sadler's Wells) returning to her sire Nathaniel (Ire), while her half-sister, the GSP Entitle (GB) (Dansili {GB}), will consort with Sea The Stars (Ire). Group 1 winners African Rose (GB) (Observatory) goes to Dark Angel (Ire); Announce (GB) (Selkirk) will be covered by Pinatubo (Ire); and three mares will visit Coolmore stallions–Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) to No Nay Never, Promising Lead (GB) (Danehill) to Calyx (GB), and Proviso (GB) (Dansili {GB}) to Wootton Bassett (GB). A trio of mares will hold court with Dubawi (Ire)-Group 1 winner Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa)'s daughter Goldika (Ire) (Intello {Ger}), and listed winner Franconia (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Night of Thunder (Ire) receives Timepiece (GB) (Zamindar), while Golden Horn (GB) will cover Winsili (GB) (Dansili {GB]). Three mares will also visit Siyouni (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) in France-Group 2 winner Obligate (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Deliberate (GB) (King's Best)-the dam of MGSW Headman (GB) (Kingman {GB})-and black-type winner Mori (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a daughter of the aforementioned Midday.

Hall Of Famer Azeri Pensioned From Broodmare Duty In Japan

Hall of Famer Azeri, who earned the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year in 2002, has been pensioned from broodmare duty, per a video released by Japan's Northern Horse Park.

The 23-year-old daughter of Jade Hunter will spend her retirement as a “lead horse,” turned out with young horses after they've been weaned to watch over them as they develop. The video shows that Azeri is one of several former broodmares employed by Northern Horse Park to watch over the youngsters, also including Biwa Heidi, the dam of Japanese Horse of the Year Buena Vista.

Azeri had 12 foals during her broodmare career, producing nine winners from as many runners. Her most successful foal on the racetrack to date is Wine Princess, a daughter of Ghostzapper who won the Grade 2 Falls City Handicap and the G3 Monmouth Oaks.

Before selling to Japan's Katsumi Yoshida for $2.25 million at the 2009 Keeneland November Breeding Stock sale, Azeri also produced the Giant's Causeway filly Arienza, who was Grade 2-placed. Once she was relocated to Japan, the mare's top runners have included Group 2-placed Leukerbad and Shirvanshah, both by Deep Impact.

Azeri's final foal was a filly born last year from the second crop of Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Drefong.

On the racetrack, Azeri was the most dominant North American racemare of the early 2000s. A winner in 17 of 24 starts, and an earner of $4,079,820, Azeri earned champion older female honors each year from 2002 to 2004.

Her strongest season came during her 2002 campaign, when she earned Horse of the Year honors with a resume that featured seven graded stakes victories, including the Breeders' Cup Distaff. She tallied 14 graded wins over the course of her career, 11 of which were in Grade 1 company. Azeri was named to the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame in 2010.

National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame’s Foal Patrol Season 4 To Debut Dec. 29

Season 4 of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's popular live webcam series Foal Patrol will debut online at www.foalpatrol.com on Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Season 4 will feature in-foal mares at Mill Ridge Farm, Safari North at Pauls Mill Farm, and Three Chimneys Farm — all based in Kentucky — and Old Tavern Farm in New York. Season 4 will also feature champion sire Tapit at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky.

Foal Patrol is a one-of-a-kind collection of live cameras following the daily activities of in-foal mares produced by the National Museum of Racing. Millions of people throughout the world have viewed the popular webcam program since its initial launch in late 2017.

Here is a closer look at the Foal Patrol Season 4 participants:

Janae (mare, Safari North at Pauls Mill Farm, Versailles, Ky.)

In foal to Malibu Moon, Janae is a 5-year-old bay daughter of Closing Argument out of the Petionville mare Debs Pet. Bred in Louisiana by Jim and Sue Harris, Janae won two of seven career races and was in the money two other occasions. Both of her wins, including the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity, took place at Lone Star Park.

Owned by Susan Moulton, Janae produced a filly by Mizzen Mast in 2019 and a filly by Daredevil in 2020. Janae's foal by Malibu Moon has an expected due date of April 12, 2021.

Miss Always Ready (mare, Three Chimneys Farm, Versailles, Ky.)

In foal to Palace Malice, Miss Always Ready is an 8-year-old dark bay daughter of More Than Ready out of the Dehere mare Miss Seffens. Bred in Kentucky by Santucket Stables, she was purchased by Three Chimneys at the Keeneland April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale in 2014. During her racing career, Miss Always Ready won once from five starts, earning her lone victory in October 2014 at Belmont Park.

Miss Always Ready is expected to deliver her foal in late March/early April 2021. The foal will be a full sibling to Structor, winner of the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Structor was Miss Always Ready's first foal. She has since given birth to fillies by Palace Malice (2019) and Gun Runner (2020).

Miss Chapin (mare, Mill Ridge Farm, Lexington, Ky.)

In foal to Oscar Performance, Miss Chapin is a 19-year-old bay daughter of Royal Academy out of the Akarad (FR) mare Society Dream (FR). Bred in Kentucky by Jerome and John Ammerman, Miss Chapin won her lone career start at Del Mar in 2004.

Miss Chapin is the dam of Grade 1 winner Coffee Clique and Grade 2 winner Admission Office, who is still active on the track. Miss Chapin's foal by Oscar Performance has an expected due date of March 18, 2021.

To the Moon Alice (mare, Old Tavern Farm, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.)

In foal to Uncle Mo, To the Moon Alice is a 7-year-old dark bay daughter of Malibu Moon out of the Partner's Hero mare Love Match. Bred in Kentucky by Hare Forest Farm, she was purchased by Old Tavern Farm at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale in 2017. To the Moon Alice made only two starts in her brief racing career in 2016. She finished third in her career debut at Gulfstream Park and was sixth in her only other race, which took place at Belmont.

To the Moon Alice has had three foals — all of which are owned by Old Tavern Farm — colts by Maclean's Music, Will Take Charge, and Ghostzapper. To the Moon Alice's fourth foal has an expected due date of April 20, 2021.

Tapit (featured stallion, Gainesway Farm, Lexington, Ky.)

One of the most influential and breed-shaping stallions of the past half-century, Tapit has sired 27 grade 1 winners, 31 yearlings to bring $1 million or more at auction, and earners of more than $162 million on the racetrack. He stands at historic Gainesway for a 2021 fee of $185,000.

To date, Tapit has sired 23 percent black-type horses, 138 overall stakes winners (86 graded), eight Eclipse Award winners, and six Breeders' Cup winners. His 2020 standouts include undefeated Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Essential Quality. Tapit has been North America's leading sire three times.
