Mares and Foals Join Racehorses at Fasig-Tipton Monday

Fasig-Tipton's July Horses of Racing Age Sale returns to Newtown Paddocks Monday for the ninth straight year. It will be preceded for the first time by the Fasig-Tipton July Breeding Stock Sale, which gets underway at 2 p.m.

The Horses of Racing Age Sale is comprised of 175 racehorses, 11 of which were supplements added late last week. Some of the standouts in this year's catalogue are recent Iowa Derby victor Stilleto Boy (Shackleford); GSW Fearless (Ghostzapper); GIII Bashford Manor S. runner-up Vodka N Water (Fed Biz); Wicked Bisou (Wicked Strong), a half-sister to champion Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute); and last weekend's Iowa Distaff heroine Josie (Race Day).

“I think it's a really good group,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “The composition and the mix of horses of racing age can change from year to year. I think it will offer a broad appeal. We have some older, proven horses at the highest level. We also have some young horses that look like they have a ton of potential. I think we truly have something for everyone no matter where you're competing. Whether you're at Saratoga or Del Mar or at a more local, regional venue, there is something here for you.”

He continued, “I think we've seen a very vibrant 2-year-old market so far in 2021. There has also been lots of activity in the private marketplace and the claim box. We feel fortunate that we think we have a really good group of horses of racing age. A lot of horses have come out of this sale and achieved significant success, so we're ready to roll on Monday.”

Some notable graduated of this auction include GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint winner Wavell Avenue (Harlington); GIII Westchester S. victor Nicodemus (Candy Ride {Arg}); and GSW & MGISP Ivy Bell (Archarcharch).

Last year's Horses of Racing Age Sale was held amidst the COVID-19 pandemic despite the fact the Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale, traditionally held the next day, was canceled. A total of 81 horses changed hands for a gross of $5.072 million last term. The average was $62,617 and the median was $30,000.

“For a while, we had to recruit heavily because it was a new concept seven or eight years ago,” Browning said. “Now, there are certainly owners that point for this sale in terms of adjusting their inventory and figuring out what makes sense. We are continuing to recruit horses that might have run well as recently as yesterday. There is certainly an opportunity for liquidity in the marketplace with a sale of this type, so there are some interesting opportunities to both buy and sell horses.”

The July Breeding Stock Sale debuts with 55 broodmares, several of which sell with 2021 foals at their sides. Seventeen of those mares belong to the Far From Over/Fountain of Youth Dispersal, which is being handled by Stuart Morris.

“We've done some things in the past similar to this with Ms. Alexander, and with the Heiligbrodt and Melnyk dispersals, so it's not the first time that we have offered some mares with foals or breeding stock in July,” Browning said. “We've had inquiries from people who would like to sell a mare. Some people really like selling the three-in-one package, the mares in foal and the foals at their sides, so we decided to give it a try and see what the market thinks. I think we've attracted some really interesting horses. Based on the overall strength of the market, we think that they will be well received here.”

If all goes well Monday, the July Breeding Stock Sale could return to Newtown Paddocks next year.

“The marketplace often answers the question whether the concept has merit or not,” Browning said. “I think these horses will bring fair market value. It's something you hope you might have something to build on in the future. But as we do with all of our sales, we will evaluate the results after the fact. Our emphasis right now is to deliver the best results for the men and women that are going to be selling with us [Monday].”

Summer Sale Set to Kickstart New Season at Deauville

There is a hint that normalcy is returning to the Deauville sales ring, with the Arqana Summer Sale back up to its normal two-day stand beginning on June 30. A quality mix of 593 National Hunt and Flat horses plus wild cards are slated to be offered over the next two days, and the unraced 2-year-olds were put through their paces over the Deauville-La Touques Racecourse on June 29.

The juveniles kick start the sale, which begins at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, and continues with 156 young store horses and finishes with the Ecurie Central dispersal. On Thursday, there will be 127 fillies and mares, as well as one stallion and 206 horses-in-training will go under the hammer.

Among the juvenile lots of note are: lot 3, a Kodiac (GB) filly out of a Mount Nelson (GB) half-sister to G1 King's Stand S. hero Equiano (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) from Knockatrina House; lot 18, an Exceed And Excel (Aus) colt who is a half-brother to the MGSW and GISP Elysea's World (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}) from Ecurie Yann Creff; Ecurie Prevost-Baratte's lot 37, a granddaughter of GI Mother Goose S. heroine Buster's Ready (More Than Ready) by Lope de Vega (Ire); a Siyouni (Fr) colt (lot 67) from the extended family of two-time Group 1 winner Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) consigned by Ecurie Yann Creff; and Knockanglass Stable's lot 81I, a son of Night of Thunder (Ire) out of Clowning (Distorted Humor), herself a daughter of GI Gazelle S. heroine Flashing (A.P. Indy).

Leading the horses-in-training portion is G2 Italian 2000 Guineas hero Fayathaan (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) as lot 503. One of four from Roberto Biondi's Channel Consignment, the 3-year-old colt is joined by group winner Elisa Again (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) (lot 487); 2021 G2 Derby Italiano runner-up Juan de Montalban (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) (lot 488); and the black-type winner and G3 Italian St Leger-placed Agnes (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) (lot 502). Another Flat lot of interest is Jean-Claude Rouget's lot 489, Darkness (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), a winner of the Listed Criterium de Lyon and third in the 2021 G3 Prix La Force.

Topping the COVID-19-condensed one-day sale in 2020 was the National Hunt horse-in-training Prunay (Fr) (Prince Gibraltar {Fr}), who changed hands for €240,000. On the Flat side, a juvenile colt named Chez Pierre (Fr) by subsequent Champion First-Crop stallion Mehmas (Ire) brought €100,000. To date, he has won all three of his starts in the blue, green and white colours of American owner Roy Jackson. The overall statistics were 198 offered and 153 sold (77.3%) with a gross of €2,894,000. The average was €18,915 and the median was €9,000.

Back in a coronavirus-free 2019, the sale was conducted over two days and boasted a clearance rate of 77.7% for 296 sold from 381 offered. The gross was €7,578,502, with an average of €25,603 and a median of €15,000.

Some of the top lots are: MSP Dubai Fashion (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) (lot 42) carrying to Blue Point (Ire); Maid's Cap (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) (lot 122), a half-sister to G1 Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in foal to Cracksman (GB); G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Hooray (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who was covered by Ulysses (Ire) this March and sells as lot 175; Monzza (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) (lot 113), a daughter of Group 1 winner Zee Zee Top (GB) (Zafonic) in foal to Bated Breath (GB); the five-time black-type winner and dual Group 2-placed Make A Challenge (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 716); G2 Mill Reef S. winner Pierre Lapin (Ire) (Cappella Sansevero {GB}) (lot 767); 2021 Listed Woodcote S. heroine Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) (lot 243); and the Group 3-placed Hala Hala Hala (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) (lot 710).

In 2020, the sale was held over two days with a reduced catalogue of 572 due to COVID-19. A total of 330 horses sold for a gross of 5,940,900gns. The average was 18,003gns and the median was 10,000gns. Topping the sale at 130,000gns apiece were Kalagia (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and New Jazz (Scat Daddy).

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “The Tattersalls July Sale has an extraordinary record not only for producing high class horses-in-training, but also broodmares of the very highest quality. To date in 2021 mares purchased from the July Sale have produced Group 1 and 2 winners in America, Australia, Dubai and Japan bought for as little as 8,000 guineas and headed by the outstanding Group 1 Australian Oaks winner Hungry Heart (Aus) whose dam Harlech (GB) was a 60,000 guineas purchase from Godolphin in 2016. This year's Tattersalls July catalogue features the usual compelling combination of well bred fillies and in foal mares as well as high class horses in training and significant consignments from Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estates, all of which look set to attract plenty of interest from domestic and international buyers alike.”

Bidding will be available in person, as well as via the Tattersalls Live Internet Bidding platform or though telephone bidding.
