Curtain Lowers on Arqana December Sale

The frenetic pace of the breeding stock sale season finally came to a halt on Tuesday, as, after four days of selling during Arqana's December Breeding Stock Sale, the last horse passed through the ring at Deauville.

Overall, the aggregate grew by 58.5% to €42,007,700, up from €25,253,500 during the first year of the Covid pandemic and the first time the sale breached the €40-million mark. There were 689 lots sold from 907 offered (76%), and 13 horses made at least €500,000, compared to six in 2020. The average of €60,314 rose 33% from 2020, and the median decreased slightly to €15,000 (-6.3%).

Saturday's quintet of seven-figure mares were led by G1 Prix de l'Opera heroine Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}), who was sold for €3,000,000 to the sale's leading buyers Peter Brant's White Birch Farm and MV Magnier. She was followed closely by the €2.5-million G1 Prix Jean Romanet victrix Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), while Gestut Ammerland bought out their partners when going to €2,050,000 for Wildfeder (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), a full-sister to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Waldgeist (GB).

New consignor Sumbe stood firmly on top of the leading vendors' table with six sold for an aggregate of €5,352,000. Haras de Capucines was next with 22 sold for €3,373,000, while Haras de Castillon's draft brought €3,155,500 for 18 lots.

Wednesday's session sported a higher clearance rate of 80.5% for 128 of 159 offered for a total of €586,000. Both the average at €4,578 and the median of €3,500 were down when compared to the corresponding session last year, by 28.6% and 22.2%, respectively.

Four mares made €20,000 or more led by lot 977, the winning Hurrym (Fr) (Hurricane Run {Ire}). A half-sister to the black-type winner Landym (Fr) (Lando {Ger}), the La Riviere-consigned bay brought €28,000 from George Mullins and is in foal to Rio de la Plata.

Nicola Fitzgerald snapped up Anna's Star (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}) for €26,000 from Haras du Petit Tellier. Lot 987, a daughter of the G3 Deutscher Stutenpreis heroine Anno Luce (GB) (Old Vic {GB}), herself out of the German champion Anna Paola (Ger) (Prince Ippi {Ger}), is carrying to The Grey Gatsby (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), whose first-crop runners this season include the listed winner Mylady (Ger).

Arqana Chairman Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell said, “After a turbulent 2020, 2021 has been marked by tremendous resilience at all levels and concluded with an outstanding Vente d'Elevage that exceeded all our expectations. With five millionaire fillies in the first session and a turnover in excess of €40 million for the first time, the sale continued its upward trajectory and has now taken on a whole new dimension. All the ingredients were present and this resulted in very good prices in the ring. Four of the five fillies sold for a seven-figure price were acquired as yearlings at Deauville in August or October, and some owners did not hesitate to reinvest during the sale, such as with Tickle Me Green and Sun Bear. The quality of the catalogue attracted many buyers from the United States, Japan, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Spain, Italy, Turkey and all over France. We would like to thank our vendors who entrusted us with the best of their breeding and racing stock as well as all our teams who worked tirelessly to make this sale a success. We wish everyone a very happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you in February.”

She’s A Winner, Dam Of Bluegrass Cat, Euthanized At Age 25

Regally-bred multiple graded stakes-producing mare She's a Winner, the dam of 2006 Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Stakes winner and stallion Bluegrass Cat, was euthanized on Saturday, Nov. 27 after suffering from colic, WinStar Farm reported today. She was 25 years old.

Bred by Ogden Phipps, the 1996 daughter of A.P. Indy out of the graded stakes-winning and graded stakes-producing Mr. Prospector mare Get Lucky descends from one of the strongest families in the stud book. She is a full-sister to Supercharger, dam of 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, as well as a full-sister to Grade 1 winner Girolamo and multiple graded stakes winner Daydreaming, the dam of Grade 1 winner Imagining.

Her second dam is Grade 1 winner Dance Number, a half-sister to Private Account, and Polish Numbers, and the dam of Rhythm, and this is also the family of the brilliant stakes winner and producer Numbered Account, who traces to the immortal and highly influential La Troienne.

“It's with great sadness that we share the news of She's a Winner who suffered a severe bout of colic Saturday morning,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar's president, CEO, and racing manager. “Despite our best efforts to save her, the decision was made to humanely euthanize her. She meant the world to all of us here at WinStar. This family has been very good to us. She will be greatly missed.”

In addition to Bluegrass Cat, a WinStar Farm homebred who banked $1,761,280 in a stellar racing career, She's a Winner is also the dam of Dramedy, winner of the 2015 Grade 2 Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland; multiple graded stakes winner Lord of the Game; graded stakes-placed Cal Nation; and stakes winner Sonoma Cat.

Lesson Horses Presented By John Deere Equine Discount Program: Bernard McCormack On His First Broodmare

You never forget the name of your first lesson horse – that horse who taught you what you need to know to work with every one that follows.

In this series, participants throughout the Thoroughbred industry share the names and stories of the horses that have taught them the most about life, revealing the limitless ways that horses can impact the people around them. Some came early on in their careers and helped them set a course for the rest of their lives, while others brought valuable lessons to veterans of the business.

Question: Which horse has taught you the most about life?

Bernard McCormack, Cara Bloodstock: “She was a gray mare by a stallion named Song, in Europe. I owned her before I had a car, and I used to ride my bicycle at the end of the bus route to go see her on a farm north of Dublin. I was maybe 18 at the time, out of high school about three months, and I'd say owning a mare before you own a car, and having to do that to see her taught me I had a passion, and what I did with the passion was what turned into a career.

“I don't know if she taught me anything specific, but what she instilled in me was that if you want to do something, you're going to have to go to the end of your bus route, get on your bicycle, and ride the last six miles to see her. That was something that a passionate person would do, and because I did that, I kept that level of passion.

“She was kept on a small farm in Malahide in north County Dublin. I was on the other side of the city. I had to take three buses to get there, and I couldn't take my bike on the train, so I had to take the bus. I got a car soon after, because I figured it was a lot easier.

“Did I lose money on her? No. Did I make money on her? No, but that was the lesson I learned, so that's okay.

“My riding horse passed away recently. I've owned a lot of horses for commercial reasons, and I can't say this mare, while I paid for her, was a commercial reason, but she was mine. Then, when my riding horse died, I kind of had the same feeling. It wasn't for a commercial reason, but he was mine. Those two sentiments are very closely entwined. Everything else is commercial, and reasoning, but the mare gave me the instillation of loving the horse, and that's carried true. That's a great life. If something interests you that much and give you those emotions, and you can have that for as long as I've enjoyed that…There's nothing better.”

About Bernard McCormack

Bernard McCormack is the owner of Cara Bloodstock, a leading consignor in the U.S. and Canada, based at Mapleshade Farm in Janetville, Ontario.

A native of County Dublin, Ireland, McCormack learned about the Thoroughbred business from his father, a trainer and racing journalist. He graduated from the Irish National Stud program, and moved to Kentucky in the late 1970s to work at Walmac Farm.

In 1979, he moved to Maryland to take a job with Windfields Farm to work with the farm's yearling division. Two years later, he relocated to the farm's Ontario division, the home of the great Northern Dancer, and he became the farm's general manager in 1987, at age 27.

McCormack remained with Windfields until 2008, when he fully turned his focus to his Cara Bloodstock consignment, which offered its first homebred yearlings in 1997. Cara Bloodstock has consigned winners of all three legs of the Canadian Triple Crown, including 2021 Queen's Plate winner Safe Conduct and Breeders' Stakes winner British Royalty.
