Champion Cesario Passes at 19

Cesario (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}–Kirov Premiere {GB}, by Sadler's Wells), named Japanese Champion 3-Year-Old Filly in 2005, passed away due to a uterine hemorrhage at Northern Farm on Feb. 27, Netkeiba reported on Sunday. An increasingly influential broodmare with three sons at stud-Epiphaneia (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S.), Leontes (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) and Saturnalia (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn})–she was 19.

“I was just surprised by the suddenness of it and I feIt that my chest tightened,” said Northern Farm's Katsumi Yoshida to Netkeiba. “In addition to the brilliant track record of winning the U.S./Japan Oaks, but [she] also [was] the brilliant broodmare who produced three sires–Epiphaneia (Jpn) who produced the fillies' triple crown winner [Daring Tact (Jpn)], Leontes (Jpn) whose son [Pink Kamehameha (Jpn)] won the Saudi Derby recently, and Saturnalia (Jpn) who entered the stud this year. I'm very sorry that Cesario, who laid the foundation for the ranch, has passed away, but now I want her to rest in peace.”

Bred by Northern Farm, the dark bay raced for U. Carrot Farm and trainer Katsuhiko Sumii. She won a one-mile race when unveiled at Hanshin in December of 2004 and followed up in the Kanchiku Sho in January of 2005. Another win, in the Flower Cup that March was followed by a runner-up effort in the Japanese 1000 Guineas a month later. Cesario captured the Japanese Oaks in her final start in her native land, and then traveled Stateside to salute in the GI American Oak at Hollywood Park. It was the first Grade I win in the United States by a horse bred in Japan and her final racecourse appearance. She retired with a mark of 6-5-1-0- and $2,578,568 in earnings.

As a broodmare, Cesario has excelled, leaving two champions and two Classic winners among her three Group 1 winners. She first visited the late King Kamehameha (Jpn) for her first two season (2006/07) which resulted in the winning colt Twelfth Night (Jpn) and the unraced mare Viola (Jpn). Barren in 2009, she produced G1 Japanese St Leger and G1 Japan Cup winner Epiphaneia (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S.) that next year, who was also runner-up in both the G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas and G1 Japanese Derby. As a sire, his best progeny has been 2020 Japanese Filly Triple Crown heroine Daring Tact (Jpn) to date. He's currently a resident of Shadai Stallion Station and commands a fee of ¥10,000,000.

Her placed filly of 2011, Rosalind (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S.), is already the dam of dual Japanese Group 2 winner Authority (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}). Next was the winning Harbinger (GB) gelding Claudio (Jpn) and he was followed by one of Cesario's champion sons-G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S. victor Leontes (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}), named the Japanese Champion 2-Year-Old Colt of 2015 and now a stallion at the Breeders' Stallion Station. Two full-siblings to Leontes follow-the G2 Hopeful S. third Globe Theatre (Jpn) and the winning filly Celia (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Having already thrown a Classic winner and a champion, Cesario's third black-type winner is Saturnalia (Jpn), by King Kamehameha's best son Lord Kanaloa (Jpn). The 5-year-old, who won the G1 Hopeful S. at two, added the Japanese 2000 Guineas in 2019 and was second in the G1 Arima Kinen before retiring to Shadai Stallion Station for 2021 at a fee of ¥6,000,000.

The 4-year-old filly First Folio (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) and Cesario's 2018 colt Lupercalia (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn} have both saluted the judge, the latter on Jan. 30 at Chukyo. Her final foal is a yearling filly by Lord Kanaloa (Jpn), and she was carrying to that sire at the time of her passing.

Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance To Host Broodmare Nutrition Webinar

The Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance (ITA), in conjunction with Kentucky Equine Research (KER), will be hosting a free webinar focusing on broodmare nutrition on Thursday, February 4, starting at 7 p.m. EST.

The webinar will focus on proper nutrition practices for breeders and farm managers for all stages of the broodmare's reproductive cycle—from pre-conception through gestation and late gestation to nursing. The information will be presented by Peter Huntington BVSc, MACVSc, an external lecturer and examiner at the University of Melbourne Veterinary Science program and Director of Equine Nutrition for Kentucky Equine Research Australasia.

“A lot of stars need to be aligned to both achieve pregnancy and maintain it. Horses are notoriously challenging to routinely breed successfully compared to many other mammals, with foaling rates of only about 60 to 70 percent,” explains Dr. Huntington. “In addition to feeding high-quality, forage-based diets to achieve and maintain an appropriate body condition score, micronutrient balance, especially the trace minerals copper, zinc and selenium, and nutritional supplements also need to be considered.”

The webinar is open to anyone looking to continue their education and provide the best care for their broodmares. Pre-registration is required for access to the Zoom webinar or the livestream on ITA's Facebook page.

Horse of the Year Azeri Pensioned

American Horse of the Year Azeri (Jade Hunter-Zodiac Miss {Aus}, by Ahonoora {GB}) has been pensioned from broodmare duty. The chestnut will instead become a lead horse, educating weanlings and yearlings at the Northern Horse Park in Japan according to a recent video posted by the park. The news was first reported by Daily Racing Form.

Bred by Allen E. Paulson, Azeri raced in his living trust’s colors to wins in 11 Grade I races, while picking up titles as Champion Older Mare in 2002/03/04 and a Horse of the Year title in 2002. She won three editions of the GI Apple Blossom H. (02-04) and two editions each of the GI Vanity H. (02/03) and GI Milady Breeders’ Cup H. in the same two years, respectively. In addition, she won the 2002 GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff, 2002 GI Santa Margarita Invitational H. as well as the 2004 GI Spinster S. and 2004 GI Go for Wand H. For the first several seasons of her career she was trained by Laura de Seroux before being transferred to D. Wayne Lukas for her 2004 campaign. In total the game chestnut earned $4,079,820 with 17 wins from 24 starts.

During the American portion of her broodmare career Azeri’s three foals were led by MGSW and GI Juddmonte Spinster third Wine Princess (Ghostzapper) and GSP Arienza (Giant’s Causeway). She was purchased for $2.25 million by Katsumi Yoshida at Keeneland November in 2009 and had another nine foals in Japan. From that bunch, the best were the MGSP Leukerbad (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and GSP Shirvanshah (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Overall, Azeri foaled nine winners from nine runners. Her latest produce is a Drefong filly of 2020.

Champion Magical Retired to Coolmore Broodmare Band

Champion and MG1SW Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}-Halfway to Heaven {Ire}, by Pivotal {GB}) has been retired, Coolmore announced via Twitter on Tuesday. She will join the Coolmore broodmare band, but a 2021 stallion has not been decided upon. In her latest start, the 5-year-old finished third in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup on Dec. 13 for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

“Brilliant seven-time Group 1 winner Magical (Galileo) has been retired and will join the broodmare band at Coolmore Stud,” the tweet read. “Mating Plans [are] yet to be decided.”

Bred by Orpendale, Chelston & Wynatt, the May-foaled bay raced for Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor. As a juvenile, she won the G2 Debutante S. and was second by only a nose in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. She continued to progress at three, with a win in the G2 Kilboy Estate S. in July of 2018 and an October score in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S., her first top level win before a second in the GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs to end her season.

In 2019, Magical was only out of the first two once in nine starts and added victories in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, G1 Irish Champion S., and G1 QIPCO Champion S. besides an additional pair of group wins. She also ran second thrice at the Group 1 level. This term she saluted in her second Tattersalls Gold Cup, besides the G1 Pretty Polly S. and another Irish Champion S. from seven racecourse appearances. Magical also played the bridesmaid in her second Breeders’ Cup Turf this November. She retires with a mark of 28-12-8-2 and $6,200,713 in earnings.

O’Brien told PA: “She was a great filly, she ran at the very top level all the time until she retired. She was ultra-consistent and just an amazing filly, really. She travelled a lot. She won three Group Ones this year and I was delighted to have her again this year, it was a brave decision of the lads to keep her in training.

“The days that stand out are the Champion S.. She was amazing, she always turned up. She was tough, she was consistent and had a super mind and was very sound. Her mum (Halfway To Heaven) was a queen, she was a queen and she was by Galileo, so I suppose you could call him the king. It would be exciting to train her offspring.”

Highweighted in England and Ireland in 2018 and 2019, Magical is a daughter of G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Halfway to Heaven, who also landed the G1 Nassau S. and G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. Magical is the fifth foal out of Halfway to Heaven and is also a full-sister to European highweight and MG1SW Rhododendron (Ire) and group winner Flying the Flag (Ire).

Halfway to Heaven, herself a half-sister to group scorers Theann (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) and Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), was purchased by agent Demi O’Byrne for Coolmore for €450,000 out of the 2006 Goffs Orby Million Sale. Magical’s second dam is the blue hen and MGSW Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), placed in the G1 July Cup.
