Ferguson Appointed To BHA Board

Noted bloodstock agent, former trainer and well-known industry figure John Ferguson has been appointed to the Board of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), the sport's governing and regulatory body. He is one of two Member-Nominated Directors as nominated by the TBA, ROA and NTF (acting on behalf of Licensed Personnel). Ferguson takes over from Luca Cumani, whose term on the BHA Board has ended.

Ferguson has held a wide variety of positions within the Thoroughbred industry. He served as stable staff and assistant to trainer Sir Michael Stoute and, on his own, trained 287 National Hunt winners (including top-level scorers Ruacana and Parlour Games). He has also been a racing manager, owner, breeder and bloodstock agent, most notably as advisor to Sheikh Mohammed and Godolphin for 22 years from 1994-2017. He was also Chief Executive of Godolphin for a time.

In 2021, he established Natalma Bloodstock, a bloodstock investment company which has broodmares in Europe, the United States and Australia. He is also a member of the UK Jockey Club, US Jockey Club and has a Japan Racing Association owners licence.

Ferguson said: “Having had a career in horseracing that has been beyond my wildest dreams, working for some incredible people, I feel honoured and privileged to have been offered this role.

“Having worked as a member of stable staff and had my first novice hurdle winner at Hexham, through to breeding, owning and selling horses all over the world, I hope that I am able to well represent licensed personnel.

“It is now in our hands to shape horseracing into a sustainable and fabulous sport for future generations.”

Added BHA Chair Joe Saumarez: “We are delighted to welcome John to the Board. He brings with him extensive experience of the training and bloodstock industries, alongside his intimate knowledge of the industry's workings from his time as a senior leader in the sport.

“We are all extremely grateful to Luca Cumani for his service to the Board. It was a privilege to work with someone of his knowledge and distinction. His understanding of every aspect of the horse and their training was of great benefit to the Board and the sport.”

BHA Halts Saliva Testing Programme

The anti-doping saliva testing pilot programme has been paused by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). Started in May of 2021, the programme was halted due to the negative laboratory follow-up analysis requested after a point of care racecourse non-negative saliva sample donated by jockey Sean Levey at Sandown on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

The BHA said in a statement, “A review of the pilot, which has tested more than 1,300 samples, is now underway to determine what can be learned and agree with the [Professional Jockeys' Association] (PJA) on a combined approach to a robust testing model. We will also be working with Sean Levey to determine how his positive sample came about in order to understand what challenges could be faced and different approaches that could be used when testing in the future. The pilot was a collaboration with the PJA and there has been a notable reduction in positive cases since its inception. It's important we incorporate all feedback and make improvements where necessary to ensure we continue keeping racing safe, fair and clean.”

Liz Truss’s Press Secretary to Join BHA

Liz Truss was announced on Monday as Boris Johnson's successor as leader of the Conservative Party and thus British prime minister, and the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) made a significant announcement of its own with the appointment of Greg Swift as director of communications and corporate affairs.

Swift will join the BHA directly from his role as head of news and press secretary to the Foreign Secretary, the position in the British government which was until Monday held by Truss.

Described as “a keen horseracing fan”, Swift has held a number of other positions connected to the government and was previously head of communications for the Department of Exiting the European Union as well as being the prime minister's deputy spokesperson and head of news. During a career in newspapers, Swift was assistant editor at the Daily Express.

“British horseracing is one of the brightest jewels in the UK's sporting crown, providing unrivalled entertainment and some of the most memorable moments in sport,” Swift said. “I am delighted to be joining the great team at the BHA to deliver on the ambitions shared by all those who are involved in the industry.”

Welcoming Swift's imminent arrival at the end of October, the BHA's chief executive Julie Harrington, said, “We are delighted to be able to attract someone of Greg's calibre to this role.

“Among Greg's responsibilities will be leading the sport's liaison with and lobbying of government and senior figures in the national media. The depth of his government contacts and political and media communications experience will be a great asset to the BHA and the sport.”

Robin Mounsey is currently acting as interim director of the BHA's communications and corporate affairs department and from the end of October will become head of communications.

Harrington continued, “The restructure of the communications and corporate affairs department has the objective of enhancing the BHA's capacity in these areas, to allow us to be more proactive and build on the work of the experienced team that is already in place.”
