CTHS British Columbia Yearling And Mixed Sale Catalog Now Online

The catalog for the 2021 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (British Columbia Division) Yearling and Mixed Sale is now online, featuring 88 entries.

The auction will take place Tuesday, Sept. 14 at the Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, B.C., beginning at 3 p.m. Pacific.

This year's catalog consists entirely of yearlings, save for a lone 2-year-old. British Columbia-breds make up the bulk of the catalog, with other entries being born in Kentucky and Louisiana.

Canadian-bred yearlings offered in the auction will be eligible for the CTHS Sales Stakes series, which offers restricted stakes races in various provinces across the country. British Columbia's contribution to the Sales Stakes program features four stakes races at Hastings Racecourse, each with a purse of CAN$50,000.

Stallions whose first crops of yearlings are represented in the catalog include Counterforce and Ralis.

Owner Provides Hastings With $1 Million Interest-Free Loan To Extend 2021 Season

Racehorse owner Glen Todd, who operates as the North American Thoroughbred Horse Company, has provided a $1 million interest-free loan to the purse account at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to the Vancouver Sun, that funding will allow the track to extend the 2021 race season by another month.

The purse account is generally funded by online wagering platforms, the casino, and trackside wagering. With COVID-19 shutting down Hastings in March of 2020, there was only enough money for 25 race dates that summer. This year, again, there was only enough revenue to support 25 race dates from May 3 to Aug. 2.

“People were getting desperate, we were going to have to lay all these people off, they had no where to go with their horses,” Todd told the Sun.

With the additional funding Todd provided, racing will now continue through Aug. 31. David Milburn, president of the local Horsemen's' Benevolent and Protective Association, said the hope is that the extra month of racing in August will allow revenue streams to rebuild enough to continue funding purses through additional race dates in September.

Milburn also said Hastings has received no assistance from the provincial government during the pandemic.

“We are asking the government to step up to ensure the jobs of the people that work with the horses, and the people who live here who call the track home,” Milburn told the Sun. “We continue to engage with government and we are hopeful.”

New Bonus Plan for BC Owners & Breeders

The British Columbia Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association (BCTOBA) and Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association of British Columbia (HBPA of BC) have banded together to help owners and breeders of British Columbia after noticing a decline in mares bred and a decline in entries to local sales, both believed to be due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

A five-year, two-part plan has been established. Internal adjustments to the purse accounts will provide a 35% bonus to those owners racing a BC-bred in 2022 through 2026, an increase from the current 25% bonus. Additionally, yearlings purchased in 2021 and 2022 at the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) sale(s) will have an extra 15% added to the BC-bred bonus in their 2- and 3-year-old seasons, making it a 50% BC-bred bonus.

“This plan makes sense and offers hope to our BC breeders and prospective owners in the future of this business,” said Grant Watson of the CTHS. “Working together we will survive and get past this COVID disaster we have all faced. I can only say to the HBPA and BCTOBA thank you for your understanding and your support as we move forward to more successful times.”
