Omaha Beach’s Hot Beach Runs Them off Their Feet in Limestone

After the FanDuel Limestone S. was taken off the grass, Hot Beach (Omaha Beach) did not mind a wet main track one bit as she rolled home a winner at Keeneland on Friday.

The dark bay began her career last summer at Ellis Park with a runner-up finish and then won the Debutante S. at the Pea Patch in mid-August. A well beaten third behind 'TDN Rising Star' V V's Dream (Mitole) in the GIII Pocahontas S. at Churchill Downs a month later, Hot Beach was last seen running second to MGSP Youalmosthadme (Oxbow) in the Myrtlewood S. at Keeneland in late October.

Well-backed at the windows as the 4-5 choice here, the Brian Lynch trainee broke like a shot out of the gate and set the tone up the backstretch. With the field unable to reel her in, Hot Beach continued to make every pole a winning one and she kept finding down the lane to secure her second black-type win.

“I tried to follow my good buddy (trainer) Wesley Ward's instructions over the years: Leave there running,” said Lynch. “I hope (she's gotten better); I hope she makes this transition from two to three (years old). She had a great little 2-year-old campaign, and Jose worked her a bit during the winter, so I felt very comfortable with him up on her today. It was a good result. It's a lovely race to win here in the spring.”

The winner's unraced dam last year produced a filly by Charlatan and she foaled a colt Feb. 13 named Flip Flop Freak (Life Is Good). Hot Beach's second dam, GSP Elusive Heat (Elusive Quality), is out of champion 3-year-old filly and GI Prioress S. heroine Xtra Heat (Dixieland Heat).

Kingman Colt Graduates at Gulfstream

KING JULIEN (c, 3, Kingman {GB}–Deer Valley {SW, $180,910}, by Speightstown) received some support at 5-1 while debuting for trainer Brian Lynch in a 5 1/2-furlong test over the Saratoga sod last August, but faded to finish a well-beaten seventh. Sent off the 2-1 second choice while getting blinkers on for his off-turf Tapeta debut, the dark bay prompted favored Bourbon Boss (Street Boss) through a snappy opening quarter in :21.78. Inching into the lead approaching the far turn, the colt maintained the tempo turning for home, dispensed of the pesky Bourbon Boss in the stretch and came home a comfortable 2 1/4-length winner. Having failed to produce a live foal over the past two seasons, Deer Valley was bred to Good Magic in 2023. She is a half-sister to Grade I-winning Crisp (El Corredor), who in turn is the dam of Japanese Derby (Dirt) victor Danon Pharoah (American Pharoah). Gold Square's AIR OF DEFIANCE (Quality Road), a $400,000 Keeneland September purchase, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite after running a solid second behind 'TDN Rising Star' Fierceness (City of Light) over a muddy strip at Saratoga in his six-furlong debut Aug. 25. The Brad Cox trainee is the second foal out of graded stakes winner Faypien (Ghostzapper). St. Elias and Starlight Racing's It'smyluckytime (Not This Time), a $450,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling, makes his first trip to the post for trainer Todd Pletcher. Gary and Mary West's homebred PUNCHBOWL (Uncle Mo) opened her career with a pair of wins at Oaklawn Park this winter and put her name in the mix for the GI Kentucky Oaks with a runner-up effort in the GI Ashland S. She has not been seen since that Apr. 7 race over this same track and distance and returns here as the 4-5 morning-line favorite. The Wests will also have fellow Brad Cox trainee Insignia (Curlin) in the race. Thursday’s Insights: Constitution Colt Looks To Author Juvenile Score

The European-style grass course situated on the Kentucky side of the southern border with Tennessee cards a maiden finale which draws $450,000 Keeneland September graduate from last year, PUBLIUS (Constitution). Bred by Twin Creeks Farm, the bay colt debuts out of Sharp Instinct (Awesome Again), who is the dam of seven winners from nine to race. The Brad Cox trainee, ridden by Florent Geroux, is a half-brother to GIII Excelsior S. hero Send It In (Big Brown).
