Monomoy Girl, Swiss Skydiver Among 27 Pre-Entries Working At Churchill Downs

With the 2020 Breeders' Cup World Championships one week away, 27 pre-entered horses logged their final breezes Saturday morning at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., prior to shipping to Keeneland for the two-day event that runs Friday and Saturday.

Saturday was another busy morning for Brad Cox's barn as he worked six of nine contenders including $2-million Distaff (G1) likely favorite Monomoy Girl.

“I hate to sound cliché but it was another awesome morning for all of these horses,” Cox added. “Most of the serious preparation was done last week but these works still matter to make sure each horse is in top shape prior to the event.”

Jockey Florent Geroux was aboard Monomoy Girl for her final breeze prior to the Breeders' Cup as she worked alongside $1 million Dirt Mile (GI) contender Owendale. Monomoy Girl was one of six horses Geroux breezed Saturday at Churchill Downs.

“She's a champion mare and really a horse of a lifetime,” Geroux said. “She's a future Hall of Famer with her résumé. The speed figures show she is a little bit faster this year than her 3-year-old year.”

The only remaining Breeders' Cup contenders to work at Churchill Downs are Just Might and Manny Wah. Both will work on Sunday, according to their respective trainers.

Saturday finalized the works for trainer Bret Calhoun's trio of By My Standards, Mr. Money and Silver Dust. Jockey Gabriel Saez worked Allied Racing Stable and Spendthrift Farm's Dirt Mile (G1) contender Mr. Money at 5:30 a.m. (all times Eastern) prior to breezing $6-million Classic (G1) hope By My Standards at 5:45 a.m. Jockey Adam Beschizza worked Tom Durant's Dirt Mile contender Silver Dust at 7:30 a.m.

“(By My Standards and Mr. Money) both worked awesome this morning,” Saez said. “By My Standards was supposed to be in about 1:01 but I couldn't slow him down. He's just doing really, really good. Mr. Money got over the ground great again, too.”

By My Standards was one of four Classic contenders to work on Saturday. Another was Sagamore Farm and WinStar Farm's $500,000 Woodward (G1) winner Global Campaign. Trained by Stan Hough, Global Campaign returned from a nine-month freshening in April at Gulfstream Park and sports a 3-for-4 record in 2020.

“In the Fountain of Youth he really tore his quarter as bad as I've seen it,” Hough said. “That set up for a series of foot problems after that. He's very talented and I think we're getting to a place where he can really show it.”

Other Classic contenders to work Saturday were Charles Fipke's longshot Title Ready and G M B Racing's Grade I winner Tom's d'Etat.

“We are ready to go for the big money,” trainer Dallas Stewart said of Title Ready. “He's a longshot but he will be coming with his run. We'll see what happens but we'll be ready.”

Star 3-year-old filly Swiss Skydiver was one of three Kenny McPeek trainees to work Saturday morning. Jockey Robby Albardo was once again aboard for the work on the Preakness (GI) winner. She pre-entered both the Distaff and Classic and McPeek is leaning to the Distaff barring any major defections in the Classic.

Entries for all 14 Breeders' Cup races will take place on Monday. There are 43 horses from Churchill Downs expected to be entered. All horses are required to be on the grounds Wednesday. Many local contenders are set to arrive on Monday including Cox's nine-horse squad.

Monomoy Girl, Swiss Skydiver, Tom’s D’Etat Breeze At Churchill Downs

Saturday's work tab at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., was filled with star power with many of the nation's top contenders logging their penultimate workouts before the Nov. 6-7 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland. Among the stars to work Saturday included champion Monomoy Girl (six furlongs, 1:12), Preakness (GI) winner Swiss Skydiver (four furlongs, :47.80) and Grade I winner Tom's d'Etat (six furlongs, 1:12.80).

On Saturday, trainer Brad Cox's barn worked five of their nine probable runners in this year's Breeders' Cup. Most notably taking to the track was superstar mare Monomoy Girl. The likely favorite in the $2 million Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (GI) worked with her regular pilot Florent Geroux aboard and started about one length behind stablemate Owendale. Owned by Michael Dubb, Monomoy Stables, The Elkstone Group, and Bethlehem Stables, Monomoy Girl swiftly worked through eighth-mile splits of :12, :24.40, :36.20, :47.80 and 1:00. Monomoy Girl galloped out in front of Owendale through seven furlongs in 1:26.40, according to Churchill Downs clocker John Nichols. Owendale completed his six-furlong move one second slower than Monomoy Girl in 1:13.

“Anyone you put with Monomoy, she seems to always out-work them,” Geroux said. “She's worked with a lot of really good horses in the past and Owendale is a really good horse. She just always gets the better of them.”

“There's not much really to say about her other than she's just really, really, really good right now,” Cox added. “We'll see what the future holds for her but as a 5-year-old she's showing how mature she's become.”

Cox's morning started at 5:30 a.m. when Donegal Racing, Joseph Bulger and Peter Coneway's $2.4 million earner Arklow worked outside of stablemate Plainsman through splits of :12.60, :24.80 and :47.80. Plainsman completed five furlongs in :59.80. Arklow, who was ridden by Geroux, continued to gallop out around the clubhouse turn in front with a six-furlong gallop out in 1:11.80. The $4 million Breeders' Cup Turf (GI) will mark Arklow's 30th career start but only the second with the addition of blinkers.

“I wish I would've added the blinkers in start 19 instead of 29,” Cox joked. “He's really turned the corner since we put them on for the Kentucky Turf Cup Classic (G3) last out. This year has been interesting with this horse. He ran a good race in June (in the $100,000 Louisville) and we ran him back in the Elkhorn where he didn't run bad but I had the not-so-great idea of sticking him on a plane and running six days later at Monmouth (in the G1, $315,000 United Nations). After he finished fourth that day, I said we have to make a change and add blinkers. It really worked out in the Kentucky Turf Cup, which in and of itself turned out to be a really interesting race when there was a torrential downpour before the running of the race.”

Immediately following Arklow's move, Cox worked Korea Racing Authority's four-time winner Knicks Go, who recently cruised to a 10 1/4-length score at Keeneland in a conditioned allowance event. The gray son of Paynter worked solo through early fractions of :24.40 and :48 with a six-furlong gallop out of 1:12.80.

“This horse has really come around,” Cox said. “I hope we can get into the Dirt Mile because I think he will really like two-turns and have a pace advantage with his stamina.”

Also in the first set of Cox horses was Slam Dunk Racing and Medallion Racing's recent $350,000 First Lady (GI) runner-up Beau Recall (IRE), who is likely to face the males in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile (GI). She worked by herself through fractions of :13.20 and :25.60 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:03.80.

In Cox's next set he worked Gaining Ground Racing's 12-time winner Factor This, who easily breezed through splits of :13, :25.40 and :49.20. The recent winner of the $250,000 Dinner Party (GII) worked outside of stablemate Gold Standard.

The fastest recorded five-furlong move of the morning came from Allied Racing Stable's $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (GI) contender By My Standards when he whipped through fractions of :12, :23.40 and :34.80 with jockey Gabriel Saez aboard. The duo galloped out six furlongs in 1:11 and completed seven furlongs in 1:24.80.

“Last week was the first work we did a little bit something serious with him (since he won the Alysheba),” Calhoun said. “He was full of energy and bounced around great after it. It's been a different year for sure losing a few races here or there. We were fortunate to have (the Alysheba) on the undercard of the rescheduled Derby. We probably could've shipped somewhere around the country but our goal was how to get him to the Breeders' Cup Classic. We decided to stay here run in the Alysheba and point to the Breeders' Cup from there.

“Some really good horses look like they're coming together (for the Classic) and horses that have beaten us. Tom's d'Etat beat us (at Churchill in the Stephen Foster). I have a ton of respect for him. Maximum Security hasn't done anything wrong in his career. It's a top group of horses that we'll have to turn the tables on them. … I think By My Standards has been very consistent this year and has gotten better as the months have gone on.”

The aforementioned Tom's d'Etat, who has been off since his troubled third-place effort in the $750,000 Whitney (GI) in early August, continued his serious preparation for the Classic with a solid six-furlong move under jockey Miguel Mena. The duo worked with stablemate Oak Hill. Tom's d'Etat, owned by G M B Racing, worked through splits of :12.20, :23.80, :47.20 and 1:00. Oak Hill completed five furlongs in 1:01.

“The schedule with the pandemic got a little awkward with everyone,” Stall said. “The races didn't quite work out in the calendar quite right for him. My gut feeling said to go into the Classic fresh anyway and when the last round of stakes races came out I didn't like the way they were placed so we stuck with the plan to train up to the race.”

Just before Tom's d'Etat worked, a trio of horses from the Kenny McPeek barn worked solo for the Breeders' Cup. Among them was recent $1 million Preakness Stakes (GI) heroine Swiss Skydiver. With Robby Albarado in the saddle, the classy 3-year-old filly breezed through fractions of :12.40 and :24.40.

“She was pulling today and feeling really good with the cool weather,” Albarado said. “No complaints, she feels amazing. … I'm going to gallop her the last five days before the race as I did at Pimlico. We're going to see how she's doing and make a decision (about the Classic or Distaff) from there.”

McPeek also worked $1 million Juvenile Fillies (GI) probables Simply Ravishing and Crazy Beautiful. The one-two finishers, respectively, in the $350,000 Alcibiades (GI) had eerily similar workouts. Crazy Beautiful worked through fractions of :12.20 and :24.20, while Simply Ravishing went :12.20 and :24.40.

The Saturday morning action completed around 9:20 a.m. with CJ Thoroughbreds, Left Turn Racing and Casner Racing's $500,000 Derby City Distaff (GI) third-place runner Sally's Curlin who breezed through opening splits of :12.40, :24, :36.40 and :48.40. She galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.40.

Starting on Friday at Churchill Downs, there will be a special training period for Breeders' Cup contenders from 7:30-7:45 a.m. The special training session is scheduled to run through Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Busy Friday At Churchill Downs Sees 11 Breeders’ Cup Contenders Log Penultimate Workouts

On a busy Friday morning beneath the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs, several Breeders' Cup contenders logged their penultimate published workouts prior to the season-ending championships on Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland.

The action began early Friday at 5:25 a.m. (all times Eastern) as 2019 Preakness Stakes (GI) winner War of Will worked with jockey Declan Carroll in the saddle. The duo clipped through fractions of :11.60, :23.40, :34.80 and :46.80. They continued galloping out strongly around the clubhouse turn and completed six furlongs in 1:12.20, seven furlongs in 1:24.80 and were up one-mile in 1:38.40, according to Churchill Downs clocker John Nichols.

“I was just the passenger along for the ride,” said Carroll, whose father, David, is Casse's assistant trainer. “I've always loved how this horse trains over the dirt. He's very versatile and can run on dirt or turf but he's always trained great over the dirt.”

War of Will previously finished third in the $1 million Woodbine Mile (GI) over the turf. This will be War of Will's first dirt try since last year's Breeders' Cup Classic (GI) where he finished a disappointing ninth.

In the next set, the Carroll family continued their eventful morning as the matriarch of the family, Kim, worked recent $150,000 Franklin County (GIII) winner Got Stormy through splits of :11.80, :23.20 and :34.80. Got Stormy is possible to take on males in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (GI). She finished second in last year's Breeders' Cup Mile (GI).

It was a typical busy morning for Cox barn as he breezed his first of four Breeders' Cup contenders at 5:30 a.m. – Godolphin's $400,000 Breeders' Futurity (GI) winner Essential Quality. The colt, with Florent Geroux up, started his work one length behind multiple graded stakes winner Mr. Misunderstood through splits of :13.20, :36.80, :48.80 and 1:00.60. Essential Quality finished even with Mr. Misunderstood at the wire and the duo galloped out together in 1:26.40.

“He seems like he's really matured over the summer into where he is now,” Geroux said. “He's one of those horses where he keeps getting better as he gets more experience.”

Geroux had the next couple of sets off from working horses for Cox but returned to the track at 7:30 a.m. to breeze Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Peter Deutsch, Michael Kisber and The Elkstone Group's undefeated $150,000 Jessimine (GII) winner Aunt Pearl. The two-time winner worked outside of Kueber Racing's $398,000 Untapable Stakes winner Emro, who had jockey Shaun Bridgmohan in the saddle. The duo worked in tandem and galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.80.

Emro, who is named after owner Rick Kueber's daughter Emerson, broke her maiden in front-running fashion at Ellis Park prior to closing form more than seven lengths off the pace in the 6 ½-furlong Untapable.

“She's pretty versatile she can run out front or can come from off the pace,” Kueber said. “There's a lot of speed in the race. She's certainly has the pedigree to run long.”

Cox will be a special guest Friday on “Inside Churchill Downs” to talk about his nine Breeders' Cup entrants and other stable stars. The one-hour program will air at 6 p.m. on ESPN 680/105.7 in Louisville or online at www.espnlouisville.com.

Also donning the Friday work tab was Calhoun's duo of Allied Racing Stable and Spendthrift Farm's multiple Grade III winner and recent $100,000 Ack Ack (GIII) hero Mr. Money and Tom Durant's gutsy three-time graded stakes champion Silver Dust.

Mr. Money was the first of Calhoun's workers Friday and recorded the fastest five-furlong move of the day out of 44 horses. With Gabriel Saez in the irons, the fleet-footed Mr. Money cruised through early fractions of :11.60, :23.40, :34.80 and :46.80. He continued to gallop out swiftly around the turn through six furlongs in 1:11.60, seven-eighths in 1:25.40 and finished one-mile in 1:40.20.

“It was kind of an almost must-win situation in the Ack Ack to get him back on track,” Calhoun said. “Mentally I think it was good for him and I can tell a difference with his training. He seems happier after the race. He hasn't had a lot go right for him this year in his races so coming into the race off a win is crucial.”

Silver Dust, a six-time winner for Calhoun, breezed with jockey Adam Beschizza in the irons through fractions of :11.60, :23.40, and :35.60.

“He's sort of been a challenging horse his entire career,” Calhoun said of the 6-year-old son of Tapit. “He's continued to get better mentally and he's been more consistent with age. I know it's in him to come out of his shell.”

Following the 7:30 a.m. track renovation break, recent $500,000 Derby City Distaff (GI) winner Bell's the One continued her march to the Filly & Mare Sprint with jockey Corey Lanerie. Per usual, Bell's the One began her work three lengths behind stablemate Grove Daddy and worked in :25.40 and :37.20. Bell's the One finished two lengths in front of Grove Daddy at the wire and galloped out around the clubhouse turn in 1:13.20.

“She likes to have a target in front of her, so we typically work her this way,” Pessin said. “Her race against Serengeti Empress (in the Derby City Distaff) was so thrilling. She dug in really hard that day to get up just in time.”

The final two Breeders' Cup works of the morning came at 9 a.m. from Albaugh Family Stable's duo of Sittin On Go and Girl Daddy. Sittin On Go, the 24-1 upset winner of the $200,000 Iroquois (GIII), worked with exercise rider Faustino Herrarte aboard through swift early eighth-mile fractions of :11.40, :22.40, :34.80 and :47.

Moments later, $200,000 Pocahontas (GIII) winner Girl Daddy breezed with jockey Joe Talamo up through splits of :11.80, :23.80 and :48.40. She galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.60.

Saturday's work tab at Churchill Downs is expected to include at least 13 Breeders' Cup contenders. Below are the scheduled workers:

BC Workers Out in Full Force at Churchill

MGISW War of Will (War Front) kicked off the Breeders’ Cup action Friday morning at Churchill Downs. With jockey Declan Carroll in the irons, the bay went in fractions of :11.60, :23.40, :34.80 and :46.80. They galloped out six furlongs in 1:12.20, seven furlongs in 1:24.80 and a mile in 1:38.40, according to Churchill Downs clocker John Nichols. War of Will has made all three of his starts this season on turf, most recently finishing third in the GI Ricoh Woodbine Mile, but is being pointed for the GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Next up from the Mark Casse barn was War of Will’s MGISW stablemate Got Stormy (Get Stormy), who was second in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile last term, but is pointing for the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint this season. With Kim Carroll aboard, the chestnut went in splits of :11.80, :23.20 and :34.80.

Brad Cox breezed four Breeders’ Cup contenders, including GI Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity S. hero Essential Quality (Tapit), who is pointing to the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. With Florent Geroux up, the Godolphin runner started his work one length behind multiple graded stakes winner Mr. Misunderstood (Archarcharch) through splits of :13.20, :36.80, :48.80 and 1:00.60. Essential Quality finished even with Mr. Misunderstood at the wire and the duo galloped out together in 1:26.40.

Also on the worktab were MGSW duo of Mr. Money (Goldencents) and Silver Dust (Tapit), both of whom are scheduled to run in the Dirt Mile. Mr. Money breezed a best-of-44 five panels in :58.80. With Gabriel Saez in the irons, the bay cruised through early fractions of :11.60, :23.40, :34.80 and :46.80.

“It was kind of an almost must-win situation in the Ack Ack to get him back on track,” trainer Bret Calhoun said. “Mentally I think it was good for him and I can tell a difference with his training. He seems happier after the race. He hasn’t had a lot go right for him this year in his races so coming into the race off a win is crucial.”

Silver Dust worked with jockey Adam Beschizza in the irons through fractions of :11.60, :23.40, and :35.60 and completed five furlongs in 1:00.20 (9/44).

“He’s sort of been a challenging horse his entire career,” Calhoun said of the 6-year-old son of Tapit. “He’s continued to get better mentally and he’s been more consistent with age. I know it’s in him to come out of his shell.”

GI Derby City Distaff heroine Bell’s the One (Majesticperfection) continued her preparations for the GI Breeders’ Cup F/M Sprint Friday, working five panels in company in 1:00.40 (11/44) with jockey Corey Lanerie up.

“She likes to have a target in front of her, so we typically work her this way,” conditioner Neil Pessin said. “Her race against Serengeti Empress (Alternation) [in the Derby City Distaff] was so thrilling. She dug in really hard that day to get up just in time.”

Dale Romans sent out his contenders for the juvenile dirt races Friday morning, starting with the 2-year-old colt Sittin On Go (Brody’s Cause), winner of the GIII Iroquois S. With exercise rider Faustino Herrarte aboard, he went in :11.40, :22.40, :34.80 and :47. Moments later, GIII Pocahontas S. winner Girl Daddy (Uncle Mo) breezed with jockey Joe Talamo up through splits of :11.80, :23.80 and :48.40. She galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.60.
