Feb. 4 Insights: Expensive Quality Road Colt Debuts at Fair Grounds

The most expensive yearling and second-priciest progeny overall of superstar sire Quality Road to sell in 2019, FIND NEW ROADS, will open his account in this New Orleans dirt sprint Thursday afternoon. Hammering to Tom Durant for $950,000 at Keeneland September, the bay is out of a daughter of GSW Welcome Surprise (Seeking the Gold), herself a half-sister to dual champion and legendary super-sire A.P. Indy (Seattle Slew) as well as Classic winner Summer Squall (Storm Bird). Trained by Bret Calhoun, Find New Roads shows a series of encouraging and stamina-building drills, including a six-furlong move in 1:13 1/5 (1/3) over the local main track Jan. 18. Also set to be unveiled is Gary and Mary West's Prime Time Player (Ghostzapper). Bought for $430,000 at KEESEP, the chestnut also has recorded several quick breezes, including a five-furlong spin from the gate in 1:00 4/5 (4/29) here Jan. 25. His future may ultimately be on grass, however, as he's out of a daughter of five-time turf GSW Plenty of Grace (Roberto), who is also a half to champion grass mare Soaring Softly (Kris S.), and most of the other black-type in the family has been earned on the lawn. MGSW Mr. Money Retired to Journeyman Stud

Mr. Money (Goldencents–Plenty O’Toole, by Tiznow) has been retired from racing and will enter stud in 2021 at Brent and Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Stud in Ocala, Florida. Mr. Money will stand as the property of Allied Racing LLC and Spendthrift Farm for $5,000 live foal in the 2021 breeding season.

During his juvenile season, Mr. Money hit the board in his first two starts before breaking his maiden by 3 3/4 lengths going a mile and a sixteenth at Churchill Downs. The bay rounded out the season with a fourth behind Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg}) in the GI Sentient Jet Breeder’s Cup Juvenile.

At three, the Bret Calhoun trainee annexed the GIII Pat Day S., GIII Matt Winn S., GIII Indiana Derby and GIII West Virginia Derby before finishing second, beaten a nose, by Math Wizard (Algorithms) in the $1,000,000 GI Pennsylvania Derby, finishing ahead of GI Preakness S. winner War of Will (War Front), GISW Improbable (City Zip), and GI Breeder’s Cup Dirt Mile winner, Spun to Run (Hard Spun). This term, the 4-year-old won the GIII Ack Ack S. and retires with six wins from 18 starts and earnings of $1,360,430.

“Mr. Money is as well named as a horse can be,” Brent Fernung said. “He went where the big money was and took home a bunch of it. He won four consecutive graded stakes as a three-year-old and probably should have won the Pennsylvania Derby as well!”

He continued, “As a son of leading third crop sire, Goldencents, Mr. Money brings that super prolific Into Mischief sire line to Florida in the form of a truly top racehorse.”

Mr. Money is the second foal out of the Tiznow mare, Plenty O’Toole. She has three other foals of racing age, including additional winner Julia’s Kitty. Plenty O’Toole’s stakes producing dam, O’Toole (Distorted Humor), is a full-sister to G1 Dubai World Cup winner, Well Armed who earned over $5 million.

Chester Thomas, whose Allied Racing LLC raced Mr. Money in partnership with Spendthrift Farm said, “I couldn’t be more proud to stand Mr. Money at Journeyman Stud. He was an incredibly talented race horse with tons of class coupled with speed and endurance. I intend to breed a dozen or so of my own mares to Mr. Money. I have a huge amount of confidence in him.”

By My Standards Joins Clark Probables Following Friday Work

Allied Racing Stable's multiple graded stakes winner By My Standards is probable to enter next Friday's $500,000 Grade 1 Clark presented by Norton Healthcare following a half-mile move in :49.40 Friday at Churchill Downs.

Also donning the Friday morning work tab was Rupp Racing's three-time Grade 3 winner Owendale who worked an easy half-mile in :49.20 for trainer Brad Cox.

On Friday morning, trainer Bret Calhoun reported via text that By My Standards, the recent eighth-place runner in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic, would likely be his lone entrant to the 1 1/8-mile race.

The Clark is the centerpiece of a fantastic Thanksgiving week of racing beneath the Twin Spires. Inaugurated in 1875, the Clark will be the featured race on the Friday program at Churchill Downs. Entries will be taken Sunday. The likely entrants to the race include Bodexpress, By My Standards, Code of Honor, In Love (BRZ) and Plus Que Parfait. Coastal Defense and Mr. Freeze are possible to enter the race, according to trainer Dale Romans.

One day prior on Thanksgiving will be the 105th running of the $200,000 Falls City (GII) for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles. Entries for Thursday's card will be drawn Saturday.

On Saturday, Nov. 28, the card will feature all 2-year-olds races for “Stars of Tomorrow II.” The headlining races will be the 94th running of the $200,000 G2 Kentucky Jockey Club and its counterpart for fillies, the $200,000 G2 Golden Rod.

The likely field for the Kentucky Jockey Club includes Arabian Prince (trainer Dallas Stewart), Inspector Frost (Brad Cox), King Fury (Kenny McPeek), Super Stock (Steve Asmussen) and Swill (Cox).

The likely field for the Golden Rod includes Coach (Cox), Lady Traveler (Dale Romans), Roc's Princess (Billy Gowan), Simply Ravishing (McPeek) and Travel Column (Cox).

Entries for Saturday's program will be drawn Wednesday.

Out of an abundance of caution, there will be no turf racing at Churchill Downs through the remainder of the meet because the course has not satisfactorily responded to this fall's climate. Grass racing will resume next spring when the conditions become more optimum. As a result, there will be no turf entries taken for races scheduled to be run on turf from Nov. 25-29. All scheduled turf races in the condition book during this time period will be transferred to the main track and entries taken for the same conditions will be dirt only. Additionally, the $100,000 G3 Cardinal and $100,000 G3 River City will be put on hiatus this year.

By My Standards (Goldencents) worked a half-mile in :49.40 (42/67) at Churchill Downs Friday morning and is a probable starter for next Friday’s GI Clark H., trainer Bret Calhoun told the Churchill press office via text.

Owned by Chester Thomas’s Allied Racing Stable, the 4-year-old was a non-factor eighth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland Nov. 7, but prior to that posted a facile 1 3/4-length victory in the GII Alysheba S. beneath the Twin Spires Sept. 4. He defeated Owendale (Into Mischief) on that occasion and that fellow 4-year-old is also on track for a Clark appearance.

The centerpiece of the fall meet at Churchill also figures to attract New York raider Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}), Bodexpress (Bodemeister) and Mr. Freeze (To Honor and Serve) among others.
