Big Day For Brad Cox: Essential Quality Shows Up With Professional Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Victory

Though he entered Friday's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile undefeated in two career starts, Godolphin homebred Essential Quality was sent to post at 7-2 odds in the wake of divisional heavyweight Jackie's Warrior (4-5 favorite). The tote board didn't tell the tale in this year's $2 million championship race, however, and the royal blue colors of the Godolphin operation hit the wire on top.

Trainer Brad Cox was jumping up and down after the 2-year-old son of Tapit hit the wire three-quarters of a length in front of 94-1 longshot Hot Rod Charlie. He'd just saddled the winner of the previous race, Aunt Pearl in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, but had been less confident in the talented but inexperienced gray colt in the day's final event.

Luis Saez crafted a late-running triumph from eighth in the early going that showed a new dimension for Essential Quality; last out, the colt won the G1 Breeders' Futurity with a forwardly-placed trip. Making up ground with giant strides in the short stretch for 1 1/16 miles over the dirt at Keeneland, Essential Quality stopped the clock in 1:42.09.

Cox won his first Grade 1 race in April of 2018 with Monomoy Girl; two and a half years later, the trainer now has five Breeders' Cup wins to his name.

It was the first career Breeders' Cup win for Saez, whose agent is former Godolphin trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

Though Jackie's Warrior broke near the top of the field, Dreamer's Disease rushed up from the outside to grab command headed into the clubhouse turn. When David Cohen pushed over to the rail with the frontrunner, Joel Rosario had to grab hold of an unhappy Jackie's Warrior and try to wrangle him back to rate in fourth position.

Likeable and Classier boxed Jackie's Warrior at the rail around the clubhouse turn, but Rosario was able to get the favorite outside into third mid-way down the backstretch.

Essential Quality was in eighth early on, concerning Cox until the early fractions flashed on the television screen: Dreamer's Disease was flying early in splits of :22.58, :45.31, and 1:10.48. The trainer was able to relax a bit when he saw Saez start moving up through the pack approaching the far turn.

Jackie's Warrior moved into second behind Dreamer's Disease around the far turn, but 94-1 longshot Hot Rod Charlie was hot on his heels and challenged the favorite at the head of the lane.

Meanwhile, Saez and Essential Quality had tracked Hot Rod Charlie into the stretch and swung out to the center of the course to make his challenge. Hard-ridden to the wire, Essential Quality put away the longshot by three-quarters of a length. Hot Rod Charlie, the half-brother to 2019 Breeders' Cup Sprint winner and champion Mitole, finished second. Keepmeinmind came flying late to nab the show Jackie's Warrior, and Rombauer checked in fifth.

The remaining order of finish is as follows: Dreamer's Disease, King Fury, Classier, Sittin On Go, Reinvestment Risk, Calibrate, Camp Hope, Likeable, and Next.

Essential Quality was bred in Kentucky by the Godolphin operation, and is the fourth foal out of the graded stakes-placed Elusive Quality mare Delightful Quality. The colt won on debut over six furlongs at Churchill Downs, then won the 1 1/16-mile Breeders' Futurity by 3 1/4 lengths in his final prep for the Juvenile. His undefeated record and total earnings of $1,335,14 will likely make him the early favorite for next year's Kentucky Derby.

Godolphin his never won the Run for the Roses, though they've won the Juvenile once before (in 2009 with Vale of York).

“I do feel the sky's the limit with this horse,” Cox said.

Juvenile: Maiden Keepmeinmind Deserves A Shot After Runner-Up Finish In Breeders’ Futurity

Later Friday morning at Keeneland, Southern Equine Stables' Keepmeinmind, runner-up in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1), and stablemate Dreamer's Disease, an easy allowance winner on Oct. 3, drilled 5 furlongs in company in preparation for possible starts in the $2 million TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance on Nov. 6.

With trainer Robertino Diodoro watching trackside, Keepmeinmind with David Cohen aboard broke off 3 lengths behind Dreamer's Disease and Adam Beschizza. At the wire, the difference was a length with Keepmeinmind credited with a :58.20 clocking and Dreamer's Disease in :58.60. The duo galloped out 6 furlongs in 1:11.40.

Diodoro believes Keepmeinmind deserves a shot at the Breeders' Cup even though the son of Laoban is a maiden after two starts. His resume going into the Breeders' Cup is similar to Good Magic, who won the 2017 Juvenile and earned the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male.

“In the Breeders' Futurity, he got in some traffic on the turn but then David (Cohen) tipped him to the outside and he came on again,” Diodoro said about Keepmeinmind. “I may have different thoughts if he had had the perfect trip, but there are two factors here: one, the trouble he had in the last race, and two, the way he has been training.”

Today's work came on the heels of a :49.20 half-mile on Oct. 17. Keepmeinmind is scheduled to have his final pre-Breeders' Cup work Oct. 30.

Diodoro said if Dreamer's Disease, another Southern Equine homebred by Laoban, does not get in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile field, he would pass on running the colt in the $100,000 Nyquist at 6½ furlongs here on the Nov. 6 Breeders' Cup undercard and likely wait for a race at Churchill Downs that month.

Essential Quality Nabs Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Spot With Dominant Breeders’ Futurity Score

Essential Quality entered the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland with the wind behind him after an electric debut score last month, and he lived up to the hype on Saturday with another powerful victory.

The Breeders' Futurity also earned the 2-year-old son of Tapit a “Win and You're In” berth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, which will be held next month at Keeneland.

Essential Quality got a clean start out of the gate and past the finish line for the first time, and he entered the first turn in second behind pace setter Upstriker. Those two led the proceedings through an opening quarter in :23.97, and they remained a relatively untested lead duo through the backstretch. Jockey Luis Saez pressed the leader aboard Essential Quality as they cleared the half-mile in :48.86, but Upstriker continued to hold off his adversary.

That changed as the backstretch turned into the bend, when Essential Quality drew even with Upstriker, then put a head in front on the outside, with the pacesetter fighting to hold off his rival. Essential Quality finally put away the early leader heading into the stretch, and he kicked clear to win by 3 1/4 lengths.

Keepmeinmind, a 52-1 longshot, staged a rally from the middle of the pack to finish second, ahead of third-place Super Stock. Upstriker carried on for fourth.

Essential Quality won the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:44.37 over a fast main track for owner Godolphin and trainer Brad Cox. He paid $5.80 to win as the favorite.

The colt is undefeated in two starts heading into this year's Breeders' Cup, after winning his debut at Churchill Downs by four lengths on Sept. 5. Saturday's race was his first around two turns.

Essential Quality is a Kentucky homebred for the Godolphin operation, out of the Grade 3-placed Elusive Quality mare Delightful Quality; herself a Godolphin homebred.

All Grade 1 Cross Country Pick 5 Features Free Equibase Past Performances

A Cross Country Pick 5 that encompasses five Grade 1 contests across Belmont Park and Keeneland Race Course will highlight exciting action on Saturday in a wager hosted by the New York Racing Association, Inc.

Top-caliber racing will start at Belmont in Race 7 at 4:03 p.m. Eastern with the $250,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/2 miles on the Widener course. Grade 1-winning multimillionaires Channel Maker and Sadler's Joy will face one another for the 15th time, while 2-1 morning-line favorite Rockemperor will look to build on a last-out third-place effort to stablemate Digital Age in the Grade 1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic on September 5 at Churchill Downs. In his prior effort, he was second, beaten by a neck to stablemate Instilled Regard, in the Grade 1 Manhattan on July 4 at Belmont, earning a career-best 102 Beyer Speed Figure. New York-bred Cross Border, the winner of the Grade 2 Bowling Green on August 1 at Saratoga, also will contend in the seven-horse field.

Keeneland will host the first of its three races in the sequence with the $350,000 First Lady for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up going one mile on the turf in Race 8 at 4:51 p.m. Trainer Chad Brown trains two of the field's six entrants for a race that is a “Win and You're In” qualifier to the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf on November 7 at the same track, saddling 2019 champion grass mare Uni and Newspaperofrecord, winner of the 2018 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas will send out Crystal Lake, with the field also comprising Beau Recall, Dalika and Daddy Is a Legend.

Another Breeders' Cup qualifier will highlight the third leg back at Belmont, where a nine-horse field of sophomores will compete in the 71st running of the Grade 1, $250,000 Belmont Derby Invitational going 1 1/4 miles on the inner turf in Race 9 at 5:06 p.m. A spot in the Grade 1, $4 million Breeders' Cup Turf on November 7 will be on the line for a race that features the top-three finishers of the Saratoga Derby Invitational – Domestic Spending, Gufo and No Word – all returning for a rematch. The Brown-trained Domestic Spending, who outlasted the Christophe Clement-conditioned Gufo by a head in August, has three wins in four career starts. Other contenders include Mo Ready, South Bend, Pixelate, Venezuelan Hug, Moon Over Miami and Ajourneytofreedom.

Keeneland will conclude the wager with the final two legs, starting with the $400,000 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity for juveniles going 1 1/16 miles on the main track in Race 8 at 5:24 p.m. A spot in the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile will be on the line, with Godolphin homebred Essential Quality, a winner on Kentucky Derby Day last month at Churchill Downs, headlining a nine-horse field. King Fury, trained by two-time Breeders' Futurity winner Kenny McPeek, was a 2 ¾ length debut winner going 1 1/16 miles on September 3.

The finale will be the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile for 3-year-olds and up in Race 10 at 5:57 p.m. Halladay, the winner of the Grade 1 Fourstardave this summer at Saratoga, will look for additional glory in a race that's an automatic qualifier to the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile on November 7, though Halladay earned a spot in the race with his last-out victory. Other contenders looking to punch a return ticket to Keeneland include Grade 1-winners Bowies Hero and Raging Bull, as well as Group 1-victors in Without Parole [Great Britain] and Ivar [Brazil].

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.
