Master Of The Sea Scores Commanding Woodbine Mile Victory, Earns Breeders’ Cup Berth

Last in the early going, favorite Master of The Sea dominated rivals in the stretch as he powered clear to capture the $1-million Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1) Saturday at the Toronto-area oval.

Making an auspicious North American debut under William Buick, Godolphin's homebred son of Dubawi covered the turf contest in 1:33.79. He returned $2.80 for the win.

Shirl's Speight came on for second, Lucky Score was third.

Entering off a score in the one-mile Fred Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile Stakes (G2) on July 15 at Ascot, Master of The Sea won for the third time in five starts this year for trainer Charlie Appleby and improved his career line to 7-2-2 from 14 starts.

With the win, Master of The Sea earned an automatic, fees-paid berth in the $2-million Breeders Cup Mile (G1) Nov. 4 at Santa Anita.

Bred in Ireland, Master of The Sea is out of the Danehill mare Firth of Lorne.

Carson’s Run Storms To Victory In ‘Win & You’re In’ Summer Stakes

Carson's Run showed elite-level class Saturday as he powered down the center of Woodbine's E.P. Taylor Turf Course and kicked clear to win the $500,000 Bet365 Summer Stakes (G1) for 2-year-olds.

Ridden by Dylan Davis for trainer Christophe Clement, the Kentucky-bred Cupid colt wore down front-runner and 9-5 favorite My Boy Prince and scored for the second time from three career starts. His two previous outings came at 1 1/16 miles on turf, including his debut win on Aug. 6 at Saratoga and a second-place finish in the With Anticipation on Aug. 31 at the Spa. Cut back to one mile Saturday, he he proved much the best in a 2 1/4-length triumph.

West Point Thoroughbreds and Steven Bouchey's Carson's Run returned $8.60 after completing the one-mile contest in 1:35.70.

Last of nine through the first half-mile as My Boy Prince set the tempo, Davis took Carson's Run 10 wide into the stretch and the colt unleashed a furious rally to overhaul the favorite in the final sixteenth and get the win.

My Boy Prince, who had to have a shoe repaired following the post parade, held for second after setting all the early fractions. Go With Gusto finished third.

With the victory, Carson's earned a fees-paid berth for the $1-million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), a one-mile race at Santa Anita on Nov. 3.

Bred by Frankfort Park Stud, Carson's Run was produced by the Gold Case mare Hot N Hectic. West Point Thoroughbreds bought him for $170,000 in April at the OBS Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, where Randy Miles consigned him.

Live On NBC: Shirl’s Speight, War Bomber Lead Saturday’s ‘Win And You’re In’ Woodbine Mile

Shirl's Speight, runner-up in last year's FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1), and local turf star War Bomber (IRE) lead the six-horse field for Saturday's $1 million Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1) at Woodbine Racetrack in Canada, live on NBC and Peacock beginning at 5 p.m. ET. The race winner will earn a free berth into this year's $2 million FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In.

The Ricoh Woodbine Mile, for 3-year-olds and up at a mile on turf, headlines the second program this year in the “Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In” on NBC, CNBC, and Peacock from North America's most iconic racetracks. The series leads to the 40th Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 3-4 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. The complete series viewing schedule can be accessed here.

Saturday's broadcast will also include the 1-mile Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes (G1) at 1 mile on the turf, which precedes the Woodbine Mile. The Natalma Stakes winner will receive an automatic starting position into the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).

NBC Sports' coverage will feature commentary and discussion from analysts Randy Moss and Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey, reporter Britney Eurton, and handicappers Eddie Olcyzk and Matt Bernier.

Charles Fipke's Shirl's Speight, a 6-year-old trained by Roger Attfield, made up huge ground in the stretch of last year's FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland, finishing just three-quarters of a length behind Modern Games (IRE), who also won the 2022 Ricoh Woodbine Mile. Shipped overseas for races at the start of this year, Shirl's Speight finished 9th in the February Stakes (G1) at Tokyo Racecourse in February and ran fourth in the Dubai Turf (G1) at Meydan in March. Making his home debut this season at Woodbine on Aug. 19, Shirl's Speight finished fourth in the 1-mile King Edward Gold Cup (G2) as the 9-5 favorite. John Velazquez will ride Shirl's Speight from post three. The Hall of Fame jockey has won five editions of the Woodbine Mile and also rode two of those winners – Da Hoss and Wise Dan – to victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Bruno Schickedanz's 5-year-old gelding War Bomber won the King Edward by a neck, stalking the pace and holding off Treason to register his seventh victory at Woodbine, and his first triumph this year in four starts. Trained by Norm McKnight, War Bomber will try to improve on his ninth-place finish in last year's race. Rico Walcott has the mount, breaking from post two.

Trainer Charlie Appleby saddled Modern Games to victory in last year's race and later in November to victory in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile. This year, Appleby has entered Godolphin's 5-year-old gelding Master of the Seas (IRE), who will be making his North American debut. A winner twice in four starts this year, Master of the Seas returned from a 3 1/2-month layoff with a rousing 4-length victory in the July 15 Fred Crowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile Stakes (G2) at Ascot in England. William Buick has the mount breaking from post one.

Trainer Mark Casse, a two-time winner of both the Woodbine Mile and the Breeders' Cup Mile, has entered three horses, led by Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, and Peter Deutsch's Ice Chocolat (BRZ), who will be making his second attempt this summer to earn a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series berth in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile. On Aug. 12 at Saratoga Race Course, Ice Chocolat delivered a solid third-place performance, defeated by less than two lengths, behind Casa Creed and Annapolis in the Fourstardave Handicap (G1). Joel Rosario will ride Ice Chocolat from post four.

Completing the field are Casse's other starters: Gary Barber's My Sea Cottage (IRE), fourth in the Fourstardave, and Pantofel Stable, LLC, Wachtel Stable, and Barber's Canadian-bred Lucky Score, third in the King Edward Stakes. Dylan Davis will ride My Sea Cottage from post five and Sahin Civaci has the mount on Lucky Score from stall six.

A field of 15 has been entered for the Natalma Stakes, for 2-year-old fillies, and is led by the first two finishers from Woodbine's Aug. 20 listed Catch A Glimpse Stakes, when X-Men Racing 3, StarLadies Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, and SF Racing LLC's Airosa defeated Gary Barber and D.J. Stable LLC's Ready to Jam by 1 length.

Win And You’re In: Mark Casse ‘Really Excited’ About Promising 2-Year-Old My Boy Prince

My Boy Prince, who turned plenty of heads with his runaway victory in Woodbine's Simcoe Stakes, will look to boost his status in Saturday's bet365 Summer Stakes (G1T).

The winner of the $500,000 Summer, a one-mile turf race for 2-year-olds, will earn a fee-paid berth for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, a one-mile race which will be run at Santa Anita on November 3.

“I'm really excited to see My Boy Prince run, “said Mark Casse, who conditions the son of Cairo Prince and Hopping Not Hoping for owner Gary Barber. “We've been fortunate to have a lot of nice horses, and I would say that as far as young horses go, he's the first horse since Wonder Wheel (winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and Eclipse Award champion of her division) to kind of get me really excited.”

My Boy Prince was the $115,000 (CDN) sales-topper at the CTHS premier local yearling sale. The Ontario-bred has raced three times, all on Woodbine's Tapeta surface, graduating impressively in his second appearance before his 14-length romp in the 6 ½-furlong Simcoe for yearling sales graduates on August 27.

“I have no idea how he will handle the turf, but my experience with Cairo Princes is they normally move up on the turf,” said Casse.

Woodbine's perennial leading trainer has captured four previous runnings of the Summer, the most recent with Gretzky the Great in 2020. He also has entered Souper Attentive, Go With Gusto, Golden Canary and King of the Track for the Summer. Go With Canary and Go With Gusto are cross-entered in Saturday's Grade 1 Natalma for 2-year-old fillies.

Joel Rosario has the call on My Boy Prince and is also named on Go With Gusto, who finished first in her only start to date only to have her number taken down.

Carson's Run, owned by West Point Thoroughbreds and Steven Bouchey, has been solid in his two career starts at Saratoga and looms a serious threat for the barn of trainer Christophe Clement.

Both outings came over 1 1/16 miles of grass and include a game maiden win on August 6 and a second-place finish in a competitive renewal of the Grade 3 With Anticipation on August 31.

“I thought he ran a great race, and he came out of the race very well,” said Miguel Clement, son and assistant to Christophe Clement, who won the 2019 Summer with Decorated Invader.

“To be honest, we hadn't been thinking about the Summer but since he came out of the race in such great shape and we were coming there with Ozara (for Saturday's Natalma Stakes), we decided we might as well make it a van full. This race is appealing because of the Grade 1 status, if not for anything else.”

Dylan Davis retains the mount on Carson's Run.

Trainer Kevin Attard has entered Bucyk, Bold Enoree and Airosa for the Summer with the latter-named pair also entered in the Natalma.

Airosa captured the Catch A Glimpse, a 6 ½-furlong turf race for fillies, for her second straight win after finishing fourth in her debut.

Attard won the 2001 Summer with El Soprano for his second career stakes win. That total has burgeoned to 88 after Velocitor registered an upset victory in Tuesday's Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie.

Rounding out the field will be last-out maiden turf winners Western Whirl and Tunechi.
