Breeders’ Cup Announces Winners Of Charitable T-Shirt Design Contest

The Breeders' Cup, one of Thoroughbred horse racing's most prestigious international events, today announces the winners of the Breeders' Cup T-Shirt Design Contest, a philanthropic art competition that tasked entrants to create original artwork to be printed and sold in support of backstretch communities and other industry stakeholders affected by COVID-19.

Alexa Zepp of Lawrence, Kan., and Amanda Crelin of Belford, N.J., were selected by the judging panel out of five finalists populated from an original pool of 93 entrants. The two winners will each receive two VIP tickets to the 2020 Breeders' Cup World Championships, scheduled to take place on November 6 and 7 at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. Additionally, their winning designs are now available for purchase on BreedersCupShop.com for $25 and will be sold on-site at the two-day event in November, with all Breeders' Cup proceeds going to Breeders' Cup Charities, the organization's official charity outreach program, in support of COVID-19 relief efforts.

Crelin's winning design features a color scheme of purple and gold, the Breeders' Cup signature colors, while the vivid jockey silks surrounding the globe serve as a symbol of hope and unity. The colorful artwork will be printed on the back of white, grey, purple and green crew neck tees, while the front features a left chest 2020 Breeders' Cup World Championships logo. Zepp's winning artwork features a striking image of racing Thoroughbred horses and their jockeys. The design, reminiscent of a watercolor painting with hues of orange, pink and purple, will be reproduced on white, grey and purple V-neck tees.

“It has been extremely rewarding to see the passionate fan response to our first-ever T-Shirt Design Contest, especially given the important cause that the program supports,” said Justin McDonald, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Breeders' Cup. “We were incredibly impressed with our finalists' displays of artistry and are excited to showcase not one, but two designs in our shop this year. We extend our congratulations to the winners and thank all of the talented entrants who took part in this contest.”

The T-Shirt Design Contest is the most recent element in a string of Breeders' Cup initiatives launched to provide COVID-19 relief to those in need. Prior to the T-Shirt Design Contest, Breeders' Cup launched branded face masks to support efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19, raise funds for Breeders' Cup Charities and give fans a fun way to showcase their support of the horse racing industry. On Mother's Day (May 10), the organization distributed gift baskets to the working moms on Santa Anita Park's backstretch to express gratitude for their contributions to the sport.

In April, Breeders' Cup launched Cocktails & Conversation, a weekly virtual happy hour series created to raise donations for impacted backstretch communities. The series has since aired ten installments, with additional episodes planned to follow. Supplementing direct donations made by Breeders' Cup to the Race Track Chaplaincy of America and the Commonwealth of Kentucky, each of these initiatives helps provide funds and essential equipment to organizations and groups in need in the battle against COVID-19.

TDN’s Amanda Crelin One of Two Winners of Breeders’ Cup T-Shirt Design Contest

TDN Advertising Designer Amanda Crelin has been selected as one of two winners of the Breeders’ Cup T-Shirt Design Contest, a philanthropic art competition that tasked entrants to create original artwork to be printed and sold in support of backstretch communities and other industry stakeholders affected by COVID-19. Crelin, a Belford, NJ resident was chosen along with Alexa Zapp of Lawrence, KS by the judging panel out of five finalists populated from an original pool of 93 entrants.

Ward Outlines Future Plans for Ascot Runners

Wesley Ward runner Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who won the G2 Queen Mary S. on Saturday, is being targeted at the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville in France later this summer. Ward was not on hand at Royal Ascot due to the ongoing coronavirus, but instead watched from his base at Keeneland.

He said, “The Prix Morny is where we’re headed [with Campanelle]. She’ll come home now and have a couple of gallops on the beautiful grass here in Keeneland, and hopefully then she’ll be ready to ship to Deauville. It’s actually a good trip for a horse, because you can fly direct from Chicago to Paris. I’m certainly hoping I’ll be able to go, too.”

Another Ward runner, Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), the G2 Norfolk S. runner-up, will be trained with an eye to the G1 Nunthorpe S. versus elders in August. Ward has sent out two bridesmaids in the sprint feature–Acapulco (Scat Daddy) and Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy).

“I’ve spoken to the owners, and we’re going to aim for the Nunthorpe,” said Ward, who has a high-profile jockey booking in mind. “I’ve been second in the race twice, and it would be great to win it. Irad Ortiz, Jr. travelled over to ride Acapulco when she ran in it as a 2-year-old–because obviously the 2-year-olds carry a light weight. I would hope by the time York comes around, he’ll be able to travel over to ride Golden Pal–that’s the idea.”

G1 Commonwealth Cup S. second place finisher and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Kimari (Munnings), who was also runner-up in the 2019 Queen Mary, will not return to European shores and will instead be prepared with a Breeders’ Cup bid in mind.

“Kimari missed the break, and when you’re running at Royal Ascot that’s a severe disadvantage,” he added. “That’s her done in Europe this year. The Breeders’ Cup is in Keeneland this year–my local track–and we’ll work back from that. I might run her on the dirt at Del Mar and then aim to take on the boys on the dirt at the Breeders’ Cup.”

Kentucky HBPA Requests Judge Alter Ruling In 2-Year-Old Lasix Case

Two weeks after a judge denied a motion for a temporary injunction from the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (KHBPA) to halt Lasix-free 2-year-old racing in the state, the organization is asking him to reconsider. Earlier this month, Franklin County Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate denied the motion for temporary injunction and also granted a motion to dismiss the case against the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, Churchill Downs, and Keeneland for a lack of standing.

Now, the KHBPA's attorneys say, that decision was unfair. Part of Judge Wingate's order focused on the organization's standing, which had been questioned by the defendants just before a hearing in late May. The KHBPA says the judge's order referred to affidavits from KHBPA members which were never intended to address the legal question of standing. The question of standing can include questions about the identity of a party, as well as whether a plaintiff can demonstrate they have suffered an injury as the result of actions by defendants.

In this case, Judge Wingate's order echoed a motion by the defendants, who say the “alleged injury” to KHBPA was speculative and not concrete. He also questioned why the KHBPA did not bring forth the name of an individual owner or trainer claiming to have been injured by the Lasix ban. The KHBPA said that it can do so, and simply wasn't given the opportunity before.

Parties in the case are expected to appear before the court on July 29 to hear arguments surrounding the KHBPA's latest motion. Prior to the June dismissal of the case, The Jockey Club, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and the Breeders' Cup were all permitted to file amicus briefs in support of the defendants in the case.

At a meeting of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission this week, equine medical director Dr. Bruce Howard reported that so far this meet, Churchill Downs has held eleven 2-year-old races without race-day Lasix. Those races have included a total of 107 starters. None of them experienced epistaxis (bleeding from the nostrils), according to the commission's records.
