Ahead of Awesome Again, Maximum Security Remains Atop Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings

Maximum Security remained in first place in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings after a quiet week in which the first seven of the top 10 positions were unchanged.

The 2020 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings is a weekly poll of the top 10 horses in contention for the $6 million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). The 1 ¼-mile Classic, scheduled to be run on Nov. 7 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., is the climactic race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Gary and Mary West, Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Derrick Smith's Maximum Security (330 votes), unbeaten in three starts this year, is scheduled to make his final prep for the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic in this Saturday's 1 1/8-mile “Win and You're In” Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park. Maximum Security, trained by Bob Baffert, already secured an automatic berth into the Classic when he won the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar on Aug. 22.

GMB Racing's Tom's d'Etat (280 votes), Sackatoga Stable's Tiz the Law (243 votes), and two Bob Baffert-trained horses — WinStar Farm, CHC Inc. and SF Racing's Improbable (226 votes) and Spendthrift Farm, MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables and Starlight Racing's Authentic (218 votes) — complete the top five.

Allied Racing Stable's By My Standards (177 votes) and W.S. Farish's Code of Honor (97 votes) remain in sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Bruce Lunsford's Art Collector (84 votes) moves up from ninth to eighth place, switching positions with Sagamore Farm and WinStar Farm's Global Campaign (74 votes). Juddmonte Farms' Tacitus (58 votes) remains in 10th place.

The Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings are determined by a panel of leading Thoroughbred racing media, horseplayers and members of the Breeders' Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel. Rankings will be announced each week through Oct. 13. A list of voting members can be found here.

In the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings, each voter rates horses on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 system in descending order.

The 2020 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic will be televised live on NBC.

Tiz The Law Out Of Preakness: ‘We Really Want To Go Into The Breeders’ Cup With A Fresh, Happy Horse’

Veteran trainer Barclay Tagg officially ruled Tiz the Law out of consideration for the Oct. 3 Preakness Stakes this Tuesday, according to the Daily Racing Form's David Grening. The 3-year-old son of Constitution, second in the Kentucky Derby earlier this month, will instead wait for the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

“Since we have no shot at winning the Triple Crown our big goal with this colt is of course the Breeders' Cup,” Tagg said. “We really want to go into the Breeders' Cup with a fresh, happy horse.”

The winner of the Florida Derby, Belmont Stakes, and the Travers Stakes this season, Sackatoga Stable's Tiz the Law was the heavy favorite to win the Run for the Roses on Sept. 5 but fell short to Haskell winner Authentic, beaten 1 1/4 lengths at the wire. Tiz the Law has not recorded a timed workout since the Kentucky Derby.

Luis Saez Returns To Partner Maximum Security In Saturday’s Awesome Again

Luis Saez returns on Maximum Security in Saturday's Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita, Bob Baffert confirmed via text. The Awesome Again is a “Win and You're In” race for the Breeders' Cup Classic, to be held at Keeneland the first weekend of November.

Saez, a 28-year-old native of Panama City, has ridden the four-year-old son of New Year's Day in seven of his 12 career races, crossing the wire first six times and second in the Pegasus at Monmouth in June 2019.

Abel Cedillo had ridden Maximum Security in his last two races, winning both, the San Diego Handicap and the Grade I Pacific Classic.

Maximum Security was disqualified from victory two times with Saez aboard, first in the Saudi Cup Feb. 29 after which Saudi officials withheld distribution of $20 million in purse money pending investigation of his trainer at that time, Jason Servis, and others in the United States. The bay colt also was disqualified from first for a riding infraction at the top of the stretch in last year's Kentucky Derby.

Saez also will ride the maiden Spielberg in the American Pharoah Stakes for Baffert. Saez is fourth nationally in purse earnings this year with more than $10 million and second to Irad Ortiz Jr. in victories, 234 to 202.

Breeders’ Cup Hopeful Con Te Partiro Retired; Still To Be Offered At Keeneland November Sale

Con Te Partiro, a multiple Group 1 winner in Australia who had visions of returning to her native country for a swan song start in this year's Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf before being offered at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, has been retired from racing due to a minor knee injury, per Ray Thomas of Australia's Daily Telegraph.

The 6-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy will remain cataloged for the Keeneland November sale.

Con Te Partiro was announced for the upcoming Breeders' Cup at Keeneland and the ensuing sale on the same property on Sept. 12, aiming to close a 2020 campaign that has included wins in the G1 Coolmore Classic and G1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes in Australia.

The mare was born in the U.S., and raced domestically for for trainer Wesley Ward and owner Hat Creek Racing. She won on debut as a juvenile during Keeneland's 2016 Spring Meet by 5 1/2 lengths. That campaign also saw her win the Bolton Landing Stakes at Saratoga by 5 3/4 lengths, and later finish second against male competition in the Juvenile Turf Sprint Stakes on the Breeders' Cup undercard at Santa Anita.

Like many of Ward's runners, Con Te Partiro was sent to England's prestigious Royal Ascot meet, and she came back with a victory in the Sandringham Handicap. Her remaining time in the U.S. saw her become a Grade 3-placed runner.

Con Te Partiro sold to SF Bloodstock and Newgate Farm for $575,000 during the 2018 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, and she was sent to the barn of Australian trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott to continue her racing career. The career renaissance she has experienced in 2020 was foreshadowed by her first Australian start, a victory in the G3 Dark Jewel Classic.

This is the second retirement for Con Te Partiro, who was initially sent off to be a broodmare during the 2019 Southern Hemisphere breeding season. However, she was put back in training at the insistence of her trainers after the mare failed to get in foal.
