Churchill Downs’ Former General Manager Jerry Lawrence Dies At 81

Jerry Lawrence, who served as Churchill Downs' general manager, executive vice president, and COO from 1984-91, died Oct. 1. He was 81 years old.

Lawrence came to Churchill Downs from Yonkers Raceway, where he served as vice president and general manager. He began his tenure at Churchill Downs under new track president Tom Meeker, with the track embarking on a series of major capital-improvement projects that included constructing a turf course, a new 20-horse paddock, and extensive renovation of areas in the grandstand and clubhouse.

Lawrence was also part of the leadership team that oversaw the first Breeders' Cup World Championships to be held at Churchill Downs in 1988.

A true general manager, Lawrence constantly toured the facility to make sure things were running properly, and he understood the varied departments that must work and mesh together for a racetrack to be successful.

Lawrence left Churchill Downs to become executive vice president at the New York Racing Association, a post he held into 1994. He subsequently became executive vice president of the totalizator company Autotote and ultimately president and CEO of Autotote Enterprises before retiring in 2001.

Lawrence lived in Marco Island, Fla., and Landenberg, Pa., in retirement. From his obituary in the Naples Daily News: He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rita Duffy Lawrence, and his sons Gerald (Stefanie Porges) and Brennen (Whitney Lawrence). He was proud to be “PopPop” to five grandchildren: Grace, Anna, Rose, William, and Virginia. Born to David Leo Lawrence and Alice Goldin Lawrence, he graduated Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, and then LaSalle College in Philadelphia.

He served in the United States Air Force and as executive director of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party before beginning his career in the horse racing industry. In retirement, he was active in his church and community, and held the rank of Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the James A. Finnegan Foundation (www.finneganfoundation.org), for which he served as a director for 43 years. Burial will be private.

Higher Power Getting ‘Acclimated’ To Keeneland, May Audition For Classic In Fayette

Hronis Racing's Higher Power, third in last year's $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita, could get an audition Saturday for this year's Classic to be run at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

“He may go in the (Hagyard) Fayette (G2) if he trains well or he could straight into the Classic,” said Juan Leyva, assistant to trainer John Sadler. “The main goal in coming here early was to get him acclimated. The last time he shipped was to Gulfstream Park (for the Pegasus World Cup Invitational-G1), and he didn't acclimate well at all.”

Entries for the Hagyard Fayette will taken Wednesday.

“It seems like he enjoys it here,” Leyva said of Higher Power, who worked 5 furlongs in 1:00 on Sunday.

Higher Power is a graduate of Keeneland's 2019 April Two-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age Sale.

Leyva also said another Sadler runner, Karen and Paul Eggert's Ollie's Candy, runner-up in Sunday's Juddmonte Spinster (G1), remains on track for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) here Nov. 7. Ollie's Candy is to be offered during the prestigious Book 1 of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale on Nov. 9.

“She had a rough trip Sunday,” Leyva said. “She was bottled up on the inside, where she doesn't like to be, and ate a lot of dirt. She made her move, but it was a little too late.”

Arc Winner Sottsass Retired From Racing, Set To Enter Stud

A day after winning the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in France, Sottsass was retired from racing, and he will stand for the Coolmore operation in 2021, Racing Post reports.

The 4-year-old Siyouni colt was campaigned in a 50/50 partnership between Peter Brant and Coolmore, the latter of which purchased its stake in January. Monday's announcement removes a key contender from this year's Breeders' Cup Turf, in which Sottsass earned a “Win and You're In” berth by virtue of his Arc score.

Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, Sottsass has been a high-level runner in France over the past two seasons.

During his 3-year-old campaign last season, the colt won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly and the G2 Prix Niel at Longchamp before finishing third to Enable in that year's Arc.

At four, he won the G1 Prix Ganay at Chantilly and he finished second in the G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron Hong Kong Jockey Club at Deauville ahead of his Arc victory.

Bred in France by S.A.S.U. Ecurie Des Moneaux, Sottsass is a half-brother to Sistercharlie, the 2018 Eclipse Award winner for champion turf female, who is also campaigned by Brant. Sistercharlie is a contender for this year's Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Oaks Winner Shedaresthedevil Headed For Vacation, Will Return For Oaklawn Meet

Third against older fillies and mares in Sunday's Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland, Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil will now be given some time off, reports the Daily Racing Form. Trainer Brad Cox said the 3-year-old daughter of Daredevil will be rested ahead of a planned campaign at Oaklawn Park this winter.

“She went too fast, too early,” Cox said of the Spinster, in which Shedaresthedevil was defeated 3 1/4 lengths by Valiance after setting the pace. “She never got a breather. It was a lot to ask, bringing her back in four weeks.”

Cox confirmed that Shedaresthedevil will skip the Breeders' Cup, scheduled for Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland.
