Tough Trio for Brown in Flower Bowl

As has become the custom in New York’s top turf races, Chad Brown offers a three-pronged attack in Saturday’s GI Flower Bowl S., a ‘Win and You’re In’ event for the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland next month. Leading the fray is dual Grade I-winner Cambier Parc (Medaglia d’Oro), victorious in four graded stakes last season–the GI Queen Elizabeth Cup, GI Del Mar Oaks, GIII Wonder Again S. and GIII Herecomesthebride S. Sent off the even-money favorite in her sole start of 2020 in the Sept. 12 GII Canadian S. at Woodbine, the OXO Equine runner finished runner-up behind Rideforthecause (Candy Ride {Arg}). Jockey John Velazquez, aboard for both Grade I wins in 2019, is reunited with the 4-year-old here. Brown is also represented by Nay Lady Nay (Ire) No Nay Never), winner of two of three starts this term, including Monmouth’s nine-furlong GIII Matchmaker S. in July. The 4-year-old, who returned to score in Laurel’s All Along S. Sept. 7, will be joined by Irad Ortiz Jr. for the first time Saturday.

Flying high following a victory in last weekend’s G1 Qatar Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe with Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), Peter Brant is represented by the French hero’s half-sister My Sister Nat (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}). Winner of the G3 Bertrand de Tarragon at Longchamp during her sophomore season, the bay was winless in a quartet of starts at four, however, did hit the board in three of them, including a second in Aqueduct’s 11-furlong GIII Long Island S. Nov. 30. Runner-up behind Mean Mary (Scat Daddy) in Belmont’s GII New York S. June 27, the French-bred annexed the 12-furlong GIII Waya S. at the Spa Aug. 8. Most recently, she finished second to Civil Union (War Front) in the Sept. 5 GII Glens Falls S.

Riding a three-race win streak, Civil Union, a former Brown trainee, joined the Shug McGaughey barn last fall, debuting for the trainer with a third in a 9 1/2-furlong Gulfstream allowance in January. Breaking through with an allowance score over this course and trip June 21, the Joe Allen homebred added the July 12 River Memories S. over 12 furlongs before her victory upstate. Joel Rosario, in the irons for her latest win, gets back on board this time.

“I think she’s a nice filly and she’s learned to put it all together,” McGaughey said. “We’ve been able to space her races in a good way and we’ll see if she moves it up the next notch. She’ll run as far as you want to run her.”

He added, “Most of the War Fronts like the firm turf. I think she likes this big race track at Belmont, too. She liked Saratoga and ran good there, but I think everything is coming together with her and I’m hoping it comes together Saturday.”

Preakness-Winning Duo McPeek, Albarado Join Breeders’ Cup’s Cocktails & Conversation Thursday

The Breeders' Cup, one of Thoroughbred horse racing's most prestigious international events, today announces Kenny McPeek and Robby Albarado, this year's Preakness Stakes-winning trainer and jockey respectively, as the special guests for this week's installment of Cocktails & Conversation. The multi-platform broadcast is a recurring virtual happy hour series designed to rally the horse racing industry's most prominent figures to raise funds for communities that have been profoundly impacted by COVID-19.

The Cocktails & Conversation broadcast, airing Thursday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. ET via Breeders' Cup's Twitter, Facebook and YouTube pages, will mark the 23^rd installment of the series. The episode will be hosted by Nick Luck and Britney Eurton of NBC Sports and 21 Club mixologist and creator of Breeders' Cup's official cocktails Mark Tubridy.

A native of Lexington, Ky., McPeek began his horse racing career working for future Hall of Fame trainer Claude R. “Shug” McGaughey III before opening his own stable in 1985. Widely known for his talent in discovering star horses, McPeek has trained Grade 1 winners Sarava, who captured the Belmont Stakes, Harlan's Holiday, winner of the Florida Derby and Golden Ticket, winner of the Travers Stakes, among others.

After turning professional at age of 16, Albarado has been a regular force in the horse racing circuit. Albarado won his first Triple Crown race in 2007, when he steered Curlin to victory in the 132^nd Preakness Stakes, and later that year won the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) with the same horse. His other victories in the Breeders' Cup World Championships include the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf with Tapitsfly in 2009 and the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) in 2011 with Court Vision.

Last Saturday, McPeek and Albarado made history as the duo won the Preakness Stakes with filly Swiss Skydiver. Defeating the 3-2 favorite Authentic by a neck, Swiss Skydiver became the first filly since 2009 to win the Preakness. The filly also gave Albarado his first Grade 1 stakes victory since 2017.

Thursday's live stream will commence with Tubridy leading a virtual mixology class for viewers, creating two refreshing cocktails to enjoy at home during the broadcast. Mark will first create “Tito's Hurricane,” which boasts bright, fruity flavors with ingredients including Tito's Handmade Vodka, dark rum, fresh orange juice, grenadine and more. The second featured cocktail is “Smoke Signals,” a smooth and nuanced cocktail featuring Maker's Mark Bourbon, Islay Scotch, sweet vermouth and smoked cinnamon.

Following the cocktail-mixing segment, the broadcast will feature a conversational interview with McPeek and Albarado, who will speak about the recent historic Preakness win, Swiss Skydiver's prospects in this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships and more. Fans will be able to submit questions via social media for the hosts and guest to answer during the broadcast for a truly interactive experience. Throughout the cocktail hour, viewers will be encouraged to donate to industry workers and communities in need through the official Breeders' Cup website.

Aunt Pearl Serves Notice With Impressive Stakes Record-Setting Performance In Jessamine

Ensuring she will be one of the favorites in next month's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, Aunt Pearl led from start to finish in a stakes record-setting performance in Wednesday's Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland. The 2-year-old daughter of Lope de Vega shattered the old record of 1:42.21, stopping the clock in 1:40.86 over the firm turf course. Trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Florent Geroux, Aunt Pearl was the 3-2 favorite in the field of 11 fillies.

She defeated runner-up Spanish Loveaffair by 2 1/2 lengths on the wire, earning a fees-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup with her victory.

Aunt Pearl is campaigned by Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, Peter Deutsch, Peter, Michael Kisber, and The Elkstone Group (Stuart Grant).

Sent straight to the lead by Geroux, Aunt Pearl grabbed a two-length advantage in the early going. She set impressive fractions of :22.28 and :46.65, then took a slight breather in the third quarter to allow 8-5 second choice Spanish Loveaffair to close the gap to three-quarters of a length.

Set loose turning for home, Aunt Pearl pulled away from her rivals with ease. Geroux rode her out until about the sixteenth pole, then wrapped up to save something for next month's Breeders' Cup challenge. It was 2 1/2 lengths back to Spanish Loveaffair in second, while Ingrassia and Arm Candy filled out the superfecta.

Bred in Ireland by Ecurie Des Charmes and Ballylinch Stud, Aunt Pearl is out of the Hurricane Run mare Matauri Pearl. The filly was purchased by agent Bradley Weisbord for $358,766 at last fall's Tattersalls October sale, and won on debut at Churchill on Sept. 1. She lived up to that victory by winning the Jessamine, improving her record to two wins from two starts for earnings of over $130,000.
