Breeders’ Cup Foal Nomination Deadline Closes Oct. 15

The final deadline to nominate weanlings of 2023 to the Breeders' Cup program is Oct. 15 at 11:59 p.m. ET. It is the last opportunity to nominate at the one-time fee of $400, which entitles each foal with lifetime racing eligibility to the Breeders' Cup World Championships and the Breeders' Cup racing programs.

All foals sired by a fully nominated North American Breeders' Cup stallion are eligible for nomination to the Breeders' Cup program in their year of birth at the weanling rate. Any foal entered in a fall or winter breeding stock sale must be nominated by the early foal deadline in order for the Breeders' Cup Nominated engagement to be included on the catalog page.

Late foal nominations may be made in the foal's year of birth by a one-time payment of a $1,500 nomination fee between Oct. 16 of the weanling year to Feb. 28 of the yearling year.

In addition to the racing benefits, Breeders' Cup foal nominators will earn $10,000 USD for every victory in the worldwide Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In program and every horse that starts in a Breeders' Cup World Championship race will earn a nominator award. The individual nominating the foal receives these nominator awards even though the horse may change hands throughout its racing career.

Visit the Breeders' Cup website for more information or to nominate.

‘He Just Continues To Get Better’: McCarthy Excited About BC Juvenile Turf Opportunity With Unbeaten Endlessly

Trainer Michael McCarthy could have two runners in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Nov. 3 at Santa Anita after Endlessly and Ngannou ran one-two in Sunday's G3 Zuma Beach for 2-year-olds going a mile on turf.

Endlessly, ridden by Juan Hernandez, won the Zuma Beach by 2 ¼ lengths after overtaking his pacesetting stablemate in the final furlong. Ngannou, with Antonio Fresu up, finished 1 ¼ lengths clear of third-place finisher Grand Mo the First.

McCarthy reported all was well with both colts Monday morning.

“It was another professional effort from Endlessly,” McCarthy added. “It seems like he just continues to get better with racing.”

Endlessly will enter the Breeders' Cup with a perfect 3-for-3 record. Prior to the Zuma Beach, the son of Oscar Performance beat maidens going a mile on turf July 30 then returned to win the G3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf on Sept. 10.

All three of Endlessly's wins have been by exactly 2 ¼ lengths.

“Don't really know what to make of that,” McCarthy said.

Endlessly is a homebred for Amerman Racing.

As for Ngannou, he remains a maiden after two starts. The Mendelssohn colt was beaten a half-length as the favorite in his debut going a mile on turf at Del Mar Sept. 10 prior to the Zuma Beach.

“I thought the runner-up ran a very respectable race,” McCarthy said. “It looks like he's on the improve. Things are coming together with him. We'll see where this leads.”

It could lead to Ngannou taking a crack at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, McCarthy confirmed.

“We'd have to think about pre-entering,” he said.

McCarthy added another option for Ngannou, a $120,000 auction purchase campaigned by Wells Watson, would be the $150,000 Qatar Golden Mile at a mile on turf on the Breeders' Cup undercard Nov. 3.

‘We’ll See How The Puzzle Comes Up’: Classic, Dirt Mile Both Viable Options For Comeback Winner Practical Move

Idle since winning the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 8, trainer Tim Yakteen's Practical Move returned to action in a big way on Friday at Santa Anita, as he waltzed to a four-length victory in a one mile classified allowance, getting the trip under Ramon Vazquez in 1:35.14.

Yakteen told the Daily Racing Form on Sunday that no decision has been made as to which Breeders' Cup race the 3-year-old would target. On the table are both the 1 1/4-mile Classic and the Dirt Mile.

“We'll see how the puzzle comes up,” Yakteen told DRF. “It's a long four weeks.”

By the Into Mischief stallion Practical Joke out of the Afleet Alex mare Ack Naughty, Practical Move, who was bred in Kentucky by Chad Brown and Head of Plains Partners, now has five wins from eight starts. With Friday's winner's share of $39,000 from total purse money of $65,000, Practical Move now has earnings of $923,200.

Catching Up with 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Winner Good Magic

Good Magic entered the GI Juvenile a maiden; he came out a Breeders' Cup winner. He's making an even bigger splash at stud. A little more than six weeks before his first crop turned up GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage, he had this year's priciest OBSMAR 2-year-old. That $2-million colt is now GISW Muth and will be one of the favorites for this year's Juvenile.

“The odds are rare to buy a horse and have it become an important stallion,” said Hill 'n' Dale's John Sikura of Good Magic. “Intuitively you like what you like and hope it works out. The progeny will do it or they won't. You can only drive as many good mares to him as you can to give him the opportunity. Obviously we have a vested interest so we believe he had a strong potential, but the multiplicity of stakes winners, colts and fillies, early and late, a Derby winner… He's been in demand every year, but this year he will breed the highest quality of mares. He'll have the best opportunities. We're hoping the success then will be multiplied.”

Good Magic (2015 chestnut horse, Curlin–Glinda the Good, by Hard Spun)
