Arcangelo Pleases Antonucci With Santa Anita Breeze Toward Breeders’ Cup

Arcangelo, the top-rated contender for the $6-million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) Nov. 4 at Santa Anita, worked Sunday for the second time at the Arcadia, Calif. track with trainer Jena Antonucci in from New York to observe.

Hitting the main track shortly after 9 a.m. (PT), Arcangelo worked five furlongs in 1:00 flat under exercise rider Robert Mallari. Antonucci clocked Arcangelo's final furlong in under 12 seconds. He galloped-out an extra two furlongs, which Antonucci clocked in “13 seconds and change” for each furlong.

“It was a serious work. A pretty work,” Antonucci said immediately after the drill. “I wanted sub-12 seconds the final furlong, which he gave me. I think I'm pretty spot-on with that. That's what he'll need to do on race day.”

Ten days ago at Santa Anita, Arcangelo had his first local work when going five furlongs in 1:02.20. Antonucci said the 3-year-old ridgling by Arrogate will have one more work about 10 days out from the 1 1/4-mile Classic.

“We'll increase the pace of his gallops and just continue to do what we're doing,” the trainer added. “For his final work we'll see if we need to tighten something here or there or if he needs more of a lung-opener.”

In the Classic, Arcangelo will be facing older horses for the first time. His status as the likely favorite is based off victories in the third leg of the Triple Crown, the 1½-mile Belmont Stakes (G1) June 10, followed by a victory in the Travers (G1) going 1¼ miles at Saratoga Aug. 26.

With the Belmont win, Antonucci became the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race. In less than three weeks, she will try and become just the second female trainer to win the Breeders' Cup Classic. Kathy Ritvo, now retired from training, won the 2013 Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita with Mucho Macho Man.

“We're just here doing what we do,” Antonucci said of her first try at a Breeders' Cup. “I'm really a huge stay-in-the-moment kind of person. We still have a lot of work to do between now and race day. We're just going to stay focused on that. If and when we're blessed to be there, then we'll lean into it and enjoy the moment.”

A $35,000 auction buy as a yearling, Arcangelo is campaigned by Blue Rose Farm. He lost his first two starts at Gulfstream Park this past winter but has since reeled off four straight victories to push his earnings $1,754,900. After graduating March 18 at Gulfstream going a one-turn mile, and immediately ahead of his Belmont victory, Arcangelo stepped up and won the Peter Pan (G3) by a head going 1 1/8 miles at Belmont Park.

Also working Sunday for potential starts in the Breeders' Cup were Adare Manor for Bob Baffert, Tamara for trainer Richard Mandella, and Gold Phoenix for trainer Phil D'Amato. Adare Manor, pointed to the $2-million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) on Nov. 4, went three furlongs in :36.60. It was her first work since winning the Zenyatta (G2) Oct. 1 at Santa Anita.

Tamara, the expected favorite for the $2-million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at 1 1/16 miles on Nov. 3, went five furlongs in 1:00.20. It was her third work since winning the Del Mar Debutante (G1) going seven furlongs on Sept. 9.

Gold Phoenix, who is possible for the $4-million Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) Nov. 4, worked five furlongs on the training track in 1:00.20. It was his first work since a disappointing fifth-place finish as the 6-5 favorite in the John Henry Turf Championship (G2) Oct. 1 at Santa Anita.

Catching Up with 2020 Breeders’ Cup Classic Winner Authentic

Between winning the COVID-delayed Kentucky Derby in September and giving thousands of microshare owners cause to celebrate, Authentic was a major talking point the fall of 2020. His first foals, yearlings of 2023, include 10 who fetched $700,000 or more at recent Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton sales.

“Authentic is a very special horse to us here at Spendthrift,” said the farm's general manager, Ned Toffey. “He is a horse that we initially pursued the breeding interest in, but very quickly we found ourselves taking it a step farther and buying him outright. It was exciting for us to have a son of Into Mischief with so much potential and especially so much Classic potential. At the end of the day I think he gave Mr. [B. Wayne] Hughes one of the biggest thrills to win the Breeders' Cup Classic right here in Lexington. He is very, very special to us.”

Catching Up with 2019 Breeders’ Cup Classic Winner Vino Rosso

The first of back-to-back GI Breeders' Cup Classic winners retired to Spendthrift, Vino Rosso currently leads the U.S. freshman sire list and has had four individuals place in Grade I races in the last five weeks, including three on Oct. 7.

“Since he is a son of Curlin, we were fortunate enough to acquire the breeding rights to him in his 4-year-old year, and that's when he really began to take off,” said Ned Toffey, general manager of Spendthrift. “He won the Wood Memorial, so he was good early in his 3-year-old year, too. He had talent, did have some precocity, and really got good as he got into those Classic distances. His Breeders' Cup Classic was one of the most impressive. He was a horse that had a really good fall and continued to thrive into Breeders' Cup week. He was the wise guy horse and didn't disappoint on race day; he's come to stud and done the same. He's demonstrated more precocity as a sire than we even expected. We're really excited about him.”

Game Tony Ann Denies Caravel Second Franklin Victory

Southern California-based Tony Ann outdueled defending winner Caravel through a deep stretch run to post a neck victory in the 27th edition of the $336,525 Franklin (G2) for fillies and mares Sunday afternoon at Keeneland.

Trained by Phil D'Amato and ridden by Flavien Prat, Tony Ann covered the 5½ furlongs on a turf course rated as good in 1:02.42.

Twilight Gleaming (IRE) set a quick pace of :21.09 and :43.93 through a half mile while being pressured by B G Warrior as Caravel and Tony Ann raced in the second flight.

Twilight Gleaming shook off B G Warrior at the top of the stretch and owned a clear advantage until the eighth pole, when Caravel and Tony Ann closed in. Inside the sixteenth pole, Caravel and Tony Ann surged past, but Tony Ann had more energy in reserve and inched past in the final yards.

“It felt like the pace was strong enough, and I was traveling really well behind (eventual runner-up) Caravel, so I was pleased with my trip,” Prat said. “When I tipped her out, (Tony Ann) responded really well. I was a bit worried by the sixteenth pole because Caravel came back on us, but she was really game. To go by Caravel you've got to go all out, but she was really game today.”

Trainer Brad Cox said despite the narrow defeat Caravel gave a good accounting of herself.

“Good run, just came up a touch short,” he said of Caravel, who is scheduled to return to his Churchill Downs base on Monday with plans to ship to Santa Anita on Oct. 30 with an eye on the Breeders' Cup. “I am proud of the effort. She likes it here at Keeneland and ran another great race. Breeders' Cup is definitely still something we are pointing towards. We'll see how she comes out of this race and go from there.”

Anthony Fanticola and A Venneri Racing's Tony Ann is a 5-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Cairo Prince out of the In Excess (IRE) mare Never Ever and was bred by co-owner Alex Venneri. The win marked the first in a stakes for Tony Ann, who improved her record to 10-5-1-3 and boosted her career earnings to $511,883 with Sunday's $208,863 winner's share of the purse.

Tony Ann rewarded backers with a win payoff of $17.60.

Caravel, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, finished three-quarters of a length in front of Train to Artemus under Gerardo Corrales.

It was another half-length back to Twilight Gleaming with Wakanaka (IRE), Bay Storm, Linguistic and B G Warrior completing the order of finish.
