Elevating Horse Racing: Carr Shows How Technology Is Democratizing Innovation In Television Production

Nothing is impossible for those with the drive to innovate — even producing two high-profile events halfway across the country at the same time. When tasked with producing Olympic track and field events — one in Oregon and one in Iowa — Jim Carr wasn't sure how he could spread his team across both events. He decided new muxing technology from LTN Global could allow him to try something new: a workflow with remote video feeds from Iowa sent back to his production truck in Oregon, enabling his team to remotely produce both events simultaneously.

With 30 years of experience producing sports events and five Emmys under his belt, Carr knows how to solve production challenges — and he's bringing his passion for innovative production to racing. His team at Carr-Hughes Productions produces the Breeders' Cup Championship and Breeders' Cup Challenge series for NBC, adding elements like virtual fan engagement to make the events even more compelling.

Broadcast production in a changing market

Carr has been an advocate for remote production long before it became a trend. He witnessed the media organizations' reluctance to try new production models and workflows until the COVID-19 pandemic forced their hand. Even the most hesitant media organizations pivoted to new technologies and production workflows to keep shows on air — with surprising success.

“When it comes to video production, I see myself as an innovation incubator. I like to try new technologies and workflows to see how they work in the real world,” Carr said.

This mindset is invaluable for the horse racing industry, which struggles to produce broadcast-quality video content and achieve other production enhancements. I've gotten to know the Carr-Hughes team through our collaboration on special events like Breeders Cup, Pegasus World Cup and many Kentucky Derby prep races. He's worked closely with my team at LTN Global to get reliable, ultra-fast IP network connectivity at race tracks to produce races and events — enabling new ideas like live fan engagement elements. At Breeders' Cup, Carr used our IP network to bring in live video feeds from a horse barn in the UK where people were watching the show. This added an immersive feel to the production, bringing it closer to the fans regardless of their geography.

“It all comes down to having the right technology partner,” he said.

Carr believes IP network connectivity will revolutionize production workflows, driving efficiency and new possibilities. If producers can set up networks and have a VPN on the other end, they'll be able to send camera signals to a studio or a production truck over the network.  This will change the way production works.

Thinking big, acting small

In the past, the big broadcast networks were the main drivers deploying new technologies.

“The lower cost and higher volume of innovation have now democratized it,” Carr points out.

As a result, video production companies and horse racing production teams can deploy new technologies that deliver broadcast quality. For instance, Carr-Hughes works with a Philadelphia-based graphics professional over an NDI network, allowing them to securely transfer the video signals for the graphics to the rest of the production team over the internet.

“We're always looking for better and more efficient ways to produce events and deliver to the networks,” he explains. “Now there's a lot of great technology out there that allows smaller companies like ours to deliver network-quality to the networks to make things happen for our customers.”

For Breeders' Cup television production, this is where the magic happens

Pushing the boundaries of what's possible

Innovation requires experimentation that's often easier to happen on a smaller scale as it isn't always about the next big breakthrough. It can be a case of making the right changes and having the right tools and tech partners to deliver great results efficiently. It's about pushing boundaries and bringing fresh perspectives. With visionary producers like Jim and his team, horse racing can be ready for the exciting times ahead.

Casse Hoping Cutback In Distance Will Bring Out Got Stormy’s Best In Jaipur

The popular Got Stormy, a 6-year-old Get Stormy chestnut trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, will cut back in distance in Saturday's Grade 1, $400,000 Jackpocket Jaipur, a six-furlong Widener turf sprint for 3-year-olds and up at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Following a pair of turf starts going one mile to start her 2021 campaign, including a nose win in the G3 Honey Fox at Gulfstream Park in February, Got Stormy will cut back to three-quarters of a mile in attempt to replicate winning form from last year that saw her post back-to-back G3 wins in the 6 1/2-furlong Ladies Sprint at Kentucky Downs and the 5 1/2-furlong Buffalo Trace Franklin County at Keeneland.

“It worked for her last year,” said Casse. “The only race so far of any significance this year was too short for her so we opted to give her a try going a mile with moderate success. So, we wanted to see if cutting her back didn't help.”

Got Stormy boasts a record of 28-11-5-3 with purse earnings in excess of $2.1 million and has faced the boys on six occasions with one win and four seconds, all in graded company, led by a memorable score in the 2019 G1 Fourstardave covering the mile in 1:32 flat over the firm inner turf at Saratoga.

Casse has enjoyed tremendous success with turf females, campaigning stalwarts Tepin, the 2015-16 Champion Grass Mare, who banked in excess of $4.4 million, including a score in the 2015 G1 Breeders' Cup Mile and the 2016 Group 1 Queen Anne at Ascot; and Catch a Glimpse, winner of the 2015 G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, who earned Horse of the Year honors in Canada that year.

The veteran conditioner said Got Stormy ranks with the best fillies he's trained.

“I had Tepin and Catch a Glimpse, who were both Breeders' Cup winners. Got Stormy is a multiple Grade 1 winner and a track record holder and she's right up there with those girls,” said Casse.

Casse said he would like to chart a path to send Got Stormy back to the Breeders' Cup which will eventually involve stretching the chestnut mare out again as this year's Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint will be contested at five furlongs on the Del Mar turf.

Got Stormy did capture the 2019 G1 Matriarch at one-mile on the Del Mar turf.

“It would be nice to win a Breeders' Cup with her,” said Casse. “The Sprint is maybe too short, but she's had luck at Del Mar. Usually, you get a pretty firm turf at Del Mar, so for her to have a shot out there, it would have to be in the Mile.”

Casse said Tyler Gaffalione will maintain the mount aboard Got Stormy against a loaded Jackpocket Jaipur field expected to include Bound For Nowhere (Wesley Ward), Casa Creed (Bill Mott), Fast Boat (Joe Sharp), Gregorian Chant (Phil D'Amato), Greyes Creek (Paulo Lobo), Justaholic (Tom Clark), Oleksandra (Neil Drysdale), Sombeyay (Peter Miller), and Stubbins (Doug O'Neill).

True Self Pointed to International Campaign

Trainer Willie Mullins's True Self (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}), who ran a brave third in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh on May 23, is eyeing international targets. Owned by Three Mile House and OTI Partnership, the mare sports wins under both codes, and has captured the 2019 and 2020 editions of the G3 Queen Elizabeth S. at Flemington. A winner of the Neom Turf Cup at Riyadh on Feb. 20, she will resume later in the summer and is targeting the GI Mister D S., formerly the Arlington Million, as well as the G1 Cox Plate.

“She's a remarkable mare,” said OTI Racing CEO Terry Henderson to Racing Pulse. “She'll arrive back over here in Australia as a 9-year-old and she just seems to be getting better with age.

“We'll most likely take her to a race in America like the Arlington Million and then we will come across here for the spring, where she may be more aimed at the Cox Plate. So, hopefully, those lovely people at Moonee Valley might send her an invitation.”

“We've got no reason to change what we normally do,” he added regarding the new strict entry regulations for Northern Hemisphere horses competing in Australia recently announced by Racing Victoria. “If we can't get past the Racing Victoria regulations with her [True Self], we'd simply go to the Breeders Cup in America and she'd be a very good bet in that 2000-metre mares' race. However, she's a very sound mare and we have no reason to suggest that she won't pass Racing Victoria's regulations.”

“Cocktails & Conversation,” the weekly virtual happy hour series, returns for the sixth episode of the season on Thursday, May 20, at 6 p.m. Eastern, with special guest Preakness Stakes and Breeders' Cup winning trainer Michael McCarthy; hosted by Britney Eurton and Nick Luck of NBC Sports and joined by renowned mixologist and creator of Breeders' Cup's official cocktails Mark Tubridy.

The multiple G1 winning trainer McCarthy joins the show fresh off his impressive Preakness victory with former Future Stars Friday contender Rombauer. McCarthy also had the honor of training 2018 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile champion City of Light and the speedy Apple Blossom Handicap winner Ce Ce. He has saddled over 1,000 starters since training on his own after being an assistant to Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, and has won over $19 million in earnings.

McCarthy will share his experience preparing Rombauer for the Preakness and what's next.

This week's cocktails are both bright, refreshing sippers perfect for May. The first cocktail is the Bramble, a vibrant classic with gin, lemon juice, Crème de Mûre and syrup. The second drink, the Maker's Renewal, is an upgrade to the standard whiskey sour. This cocktail is made with Maker's Mark®, lemon juice, Crème de Cassis, simple syrup and Angostura Bitters.

In addition to the cocktail mixing segment, fans will be able to submit questions via social media for the hosts and McCarthy to answer during the live stream. Throughout the cocktail hour, viewers will be encouraged to donate to industry workers and communities in need through the official Breeders' Cup website.
