Catching Up with 2005 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Winner Folklore

The late owners Bob and Beverly Lewis, universally beloved in the industry and honored with the Eclipse Award of Merit in 1997, got their third and final Breeders' Cup win with Folklore, made all the more special as she was a homebred. Although they used a variety of trainers, all three of their of their Breeders' Cup wins were with D. Wayne Lukas.

“We partnered with WinStar on Tiznow and Folklore was in his first crop,” said Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Farm, where Folklore was raised. “She was bred by Bob and Beverly Lewis. At the time, they used several different trainers and Wayne Lukas was one of them. Folklore was kind of slated to go to the sale. We had others for them that were by more high-profile sires at the time, higher-bred yearlings. Lukas was told he could pick one. He locked on her right away. He didn't even look at the pedigree, didn't care who she was by or what her family was. He wanted her and he just knew. And of course she turned into a Breeders' Cup winner and a champion. She really kicked off Tiznow's stallion career, him being such a special horse in Breeders' Cup lore, then to get her in his first crop. I give Lukas a lot of credit. He was right.”

Folklore, now 20 and still owned by a branch of the Lewis family, has a yearling filly by Practical Joke, a weanling filly by Yaupon, and was bred to Mo Donegal for 2024. Her first daughter is the dam of multiple Japanese champion and Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

Champion Stakes Winner King Of Steel Pre-Entered In Breeders’ Cup Turf, Classic

Winner of the Champion Stakes on Saturday's British Champions Day, King of Steel may make the trip to California for the Breeders' Cup World Championships in two weeks' time. According to the Daily Racing Form, the 3-year-old son of Wootton Bassett has been pre-entered in both the Turf and the Classic.

While trainer Roger Varian is leaning toward the Turf, he has not committed to the U.S. trip. Varian told DRF he plans to wait to decide until after the colt has had several days to recover from his Champion triumph.

“We'll make a decision later in the week,” Varian said. “It's too soon. That's the reason we can't answer any questions seriously.”

King of Steel won the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier this year, was second in the G1 Epsom Derby, and ran third in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes. Overall, the colt has won three of his seven career starts for earnings of $1,725,512.

Bred in Kentucky by Bonne Chance Farm, King of Steel is out of the British-bred Eldacar (Verglas), a two-time winner in France. AMO Racing purchased King of Steel for $200,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling sale.

Delacour Hoping Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sets Up For Late-Running Fulmineo

Starlight Racing and Mark Grier's Fulmineo will set his sights on the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf on November 3 at Santa Anita Park after finishing a game second in the Grade 2 Pilgrim on October 4 at Belmont at the Big A.

Trained by Arnaud Delacour, the Bolt d'Oro bay rallied from six lengths off the pace in the 1 1/16-mile Pilgrim and showed a strong turn of foot into the stretch under Flavien Prat, but was bumped by rivals near the sixteenth pole and got up to secure place honors by a neck over dead-heat third-place finishers Liam's Journey and Spirit Prince. He finished 1 1/4 lengths behind the victorious Agate Road and was awarded a career-best 74 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

“I was very happy with it. He maybe lost a little momentum and that might or might not have cost him, but it was a very good effort,” said Delacour. “Those were solid horses.”

Delacour said he hopes for a swift pace as Fulmineo – whose lone win came at the Pilgrim distance in September at Colonial Downs – turns back a half-furlong in the one-mile Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

“It's a trip thing. We're going only a mile on a very firm turf course, so it really needs to set up,” said Delacour. “I'm sure there will be plenty of speed, and usually it is loaded with speed. He's not a horse that's going to be close to the pace – he'll be mid-pack at best or maybe towards the back. I just hope for a good, clear run with him.”

Fulmineo had his first work back since the Pilgrim on Thursday, covering a half-mile in 49.40 seconds over the Fair Hill all-weather course.

“He came back very well and had a good maintenance breeze yesterday,” said Delacour. “He looks good this morning, so we'll pre-enter on Monday and take it from there.”

In addition to Fulmineo, Delacour is hopeful Mark Grier's Air Recruit will make it into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf field after a strong win in the 1 1/16-mile Laurel Futurity on September 30. The son of Air Force Blue graduated in August sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs at Colonial and followed with a third-place effort in the Rosies going the same distance on September 9.

“He will be a bit more tactical than Fulmineo and he has more natural speed,” said Delacour. “He easily won at five-and-a-half [furlongs] and he's got that cruising speed. If I can get them both in, we'll run them both and see what we have.”

Delacour noted that even though Air Recruit has done well sprinting, he does not intend to consider the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint as a backup in case the chestnut does not draw into the Juvenile Turf. The likely 'Plan B' race would be the $150,000 Qatar Golden Mile on the day's undercard for juveniles on turf.

Should either Fulmineo or Air Recruit capture the prestigious $1 million test, it would mark Delacour's first win at the Breeders' Cup after finishing on-the-board with Chalon in the 2018 Filly and Mare Sprint [second] and with A.P. Indian in the 2016 Sprint [third].

“It's always such a great event with a very international flavor. It really means a lot for me and my team and the owner to be there,” said Delacour. “The journey is fantastic and we always just hope for the best.”

On the East Coast, Delacour could have one other stakes starter on the same weekend as Independenceavenue looks to make her stakes debut in the $120,000 Stewart Manor, a six-furlong turf sprint for juveniles fillies, on November 4 at Aqueduct.

Owned by West Point Thoroughbreds, Marvin Delfiner and Scarlet Oak Racing, the daughter of Mr Speaker was a decisive winner at second asking in a 5 1/2-furlong turf maiden tilt on September 7 at Colonial and was slated to start in the Matron on October 8 here, but was scratched when the race was moved to the main track.

“We will probably try her in there as long as we are on the turf,” said Delacour. “She's good and her numbers have significantly improved.”

A $50,000 purchase at the OBS June 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale, Independenceavenue is out of the dual Brazilian Group 1-winner Off the Road and has worked four times since her maiden score, most recently covering a half-mile in 49.60 on Sunday over Fair Hill's all-weather surface.

Baffert Quartet, Tamara Among Breeders’ Cup Hopefuls On Santa Anita Work Tab

Prince of Monaco and Speed Boat Beach were among a quartet of Breeders' Cup prospects trained by Bob Baffert to record timed workouts at Santa Anita Sunday.

Prince of Monaco and Speed Boat Beach each worked six furlongs from the gate. Prince of Monaco, pointed to the $2-million Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Nov. 3, went six furlongs in 1:12 flat. Speed Boat Beach, headed to the $2-million Sprint (G1) Nov. 4, blitzed through his work in 1:11 flat. It was the fastest of seven moves at the distance.

Prince of Monaco will try and provide a sixth Juvenile win for Baffert, which would break a tie with D. Wayne Lukas for most all time. Prince of Monaco, by Speightstown, is a perfect 3-for-3 including wins in the Best Pal (G3)  and Del Mar Futurity (G1), both at Del Mar. The 1 1/16-mile Juvenile will be his first time going two turns.

Speed Boat Beach will go for a sixth win in the Sprint for Baffert, who already owns the record for most all time. On Sept. 30, the 3-year-old colt by Bayern returned from a nearly 10-month layoff Sept. 30 and finished a game second in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2) behind Dr. Schivel, who also worked Sunday.

Also working for Baffert were Adare Manor (5f, :59.60) for the $2-million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) on Nov. 4 and Eda (4f, :46.80), who is possible for the $1-million Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) Nov. 4.

Adare Manor has won five straight races including the Zenyatta (G2) on Oct. 1. Eda last time out had a seven-race win streak snapped when a disappointing third as the favorite in the Chillingworth (G3) Sept. 29.

Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella worked Tamara, the likely favorite for the $2-million Juvenile Fillies (G1) Nov. 3. The daughter of Bolt d'Oro out of Hall of Fame mare Beholder went six furlongs in 1:12.60. Tamara is a perfect 2-for-2, including a win the Del Mar Debutante (G1) going seven furlongs Sept. 9. The Juvenile Fillies will be her first time going two turns.

Working for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen were Clairiere (5f, :59.80) and Private Creed (4f, :48.40). Clairiere was fourth in last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland. She is 2-2-1 in five starts this year, which includes wins in the Apple Blossom (G1) at Oaklawn and Ogden Phipps (G1) at Belmont Park. Most recently, the 5-year-old daughter of Curlin was a lackluster fifth in the Personal Ensign (G1) at Saratoga Aug. 25.

Dr. Schivel worked five furlongs in 1:00.80 for trainer Mark Glatt. It was his second work since winning the Santa Anita Sprint Championship. In 2021 at Del Mar, Dr. Schivel was second by just a nose in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Buttercream Babe, a candidate for the $1-million Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) Nov. 3 for trainer Michael Maker, worked four furlongs in :51.20. The daughter of Twirling Candy was most recently second by a neck in the  Surfer Girl (G3) won by Dreamfyre on Oct. 8.

Rounding out Sunday's Breeders' Cup workers were Gold Phoenix and Balladeer, both candidates for the $4-million Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) Nov. 4. Balladeer, front-running winner of the John Henry Turf (G2) Oct. 1, went five furlongs in 1:00.00 for trainer George Papaprodromou. Gold Phoenix, fifth in the John Henry, worked five furlongs on the training track in 1:01.80.

Pre-entries for the 40th Breeders' Cup will be announced on Wednesday at 9 a.m. (PT).
