Max Player, Yaupon Already In Southern California To Prepare For Breeders’ Cup Runs

Trainer Steve Asmussen has shipped two of his Breeders' Cup contenders, Max Player and Yaupon, to Southern California to begin preparations for the World Championships at Del Mar in November, reports bloodhorse.com. Both have begun training at Santa Anita Park, and will remain there approximately a month before heading to Del Mar.

Max Player won the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Sept. 4 and is being pointed to the Breeders' Cup Classic. Yaupon won the G1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 28 and is being pointed to the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

“Max Player is going to train straight up to the Classic,” Asmussen told bloodhorse.com. “The spacing in his races has proved extremely effective with his Suburban (G2) win and his Jockey Club Gold Cup.

“Yaupon, the same thing. Spacing in his races has been key to getting them both back running at the top of their game.”

Del Mar Boosts Fall Meet Overnight Purses 20%

Del Mar's eighth fall meeting–starting Wednesday, Nov. 3–will offer horsemen/women a 20% blended raise in overnight purses compared to last year, as well as a continuation of the popular 'Ship & Win' program that has amplified field size and year-round horse population at the track and in the state, Del Mar announced Tuesday.

The 15-day stand, which will run through Sunday, Nov. 28, includes the 38th edition of the Breeders' Cup World Championships Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 6.

“Our summer meet was extraordinary on all fronts,” said track vice president and racing secretary David Jerkens. “Our racing was just about the best we've ever seen here and our 'Ship & Win' program continues to give Del Mar–and California racing–a tremendous boost.”

Among the all-inclusive increases in purse values during the upcoming four-week session will be the following:

Maiden Special Weight races jump from $57,000 to $70,000.
First-level allowance races rise from $59,000 to $72,000.
$16,000 claimers will now race for $30,000 instead of $26,000.

Mother Earth To Fill In For Santa Barbara At Breeders’ Cup

This year's G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Prix Rothschild winner Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) will be re-routed from next month's Golden Eagle in Australia to the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar on Nov. 6 to take the place of Ballydoyle's dual Grade I winner Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {Ire}), who is likely to miss the meeting after suffering a setback.

“Unfortunately Santa Barbara has had a setback,” said trainer Aidan O'Brien. “It doesn't look at the moment as if she's going to make the Breeders' Cup. We've now rerouted Mother Earth. She was going to go to Australia, but we're thinking she'll be going to America to take in some of the races that Santa Barbara could have run in. It's a shame for Santa Barbara, she'd been going really well of late.”

Mother Earth finished second in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland and has hit the board in all six starts, all in Group 1 company, this season, most recently finishing a troubled third in the G1 Matron S. on Irish Champions Weekend. Early Oaks favourite Santa Barbara was beaten in the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and G1 Pretty Polly S. to start her campaign before traveling to America to take the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S. and the GI Beverly D. S.

Easing Of COVID Travel Restrictions Expected To Help Thoroughbred Industry’s Rebound

The White House announced Monday plans to ease COVID-19 travel restrictions into the United States by foreign visitors from 33 countries, including the United Kingdom and European Union, starting in November. The move is expected to clear the way to make it easier for foreign nationals to attend important equine-related events in the United States like the Breeders' Cup World Championships in California and the November breeding stock sales in Kentucky.

The new rules will require all foreign nationals from the impacted countries arriving in the United States to show proof of being fully vaccinated, according to the White House.

“This is very welcome news as Thoroughbred breeding and racing in the United States continues to rebound from the negative impacts of the coronavirus pandemic,” said NTRA President and Chief Executive Officer Alex Waldrop.
