Breeders’ Cup Winner Modern Games Headlines Woodbine Mile

Automatic Breeders' Cup berths are on the line as star-laden editions of the Ricoh Woodbine Mile, Pattison Summer Stakes, and Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes headline Saturday's outstanding card of racing at Woodbine.

The 26th running of the Mile, worth $1 million and contested over the world-renowned E.P. Taylor Turf Course, has attracted an accomplished field of 11 hopefuls. The Mile and a replay of the Pattison Summer will be showcased on a live broadcast airing on TSN4 and TSN5 from 5-6 p.m. ET.

Under the terms of the Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” Challenge Series, the Woodbine Mile winner will be entitled to a fees-paid berth for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile, to be run on November 5 at Keeneland. The winner of the $500,000 Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes, for 2-year-old fillies, will be entitled to a fees-paid berth for the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf on November 4, while the winner of the $500,000 Pattison Summer Stakes, for 2-year-olds, receives the same opportunity for the $2 million Juvenile Turf, also on November 4.

Once again, the Mile has attracted a formidable group of turf talents, a combination of local and international standouts, accompanied by some of the highest profile trainers and jockeys in the sport.

From a Breeders' Cup victor, to a local defending Mile winner, to a two-time Canadian Horse of the Year, to four Irish-breds and two Brazilian-breds, this year's race serves up several intriguing storylines.

Godolphin's Modern Games (IRE) will be making his first appearance back in North America since his memorable Breeders' Cup triumph. Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby will be looking to duplicate their Woodbine success from 2021, as they hit the Pattison Canadian International, Summer and Natalma trifecta.

William Buick will make the trip to ride for Godolphin and Appleby on Saturday.

“We feel that Modern Games will be suited to the E.P. Taylor Turf course because of his versatility,” said Appleby. “He has shown he can perform on tracks internationally and in Europe.”

The son of Dubawi (IRE)-Modern Ideals, who sports a record of 5-2-1 from 10 starts, won four straight races starting last September through to this May.

As for the 3-year-old's best attributes, Appleby landed on a trio of skills.

“His professionalism that he has shown to date, versatility and class,” said the trainer, who chose Modern Games' Grade 1 triumph at Longchamp this May as the horse's most impressive win to date. “He's a progressive horse that every time he was set a challenge, he stepped up again.”

Owned by Bonne Chance Farm and Stud R D I, Ivar (BRZ), a two-time Breeders' Cup Mile participant, brings a record of 6-0-2 from 12 starts into the Mile. Trained by Paulo Lobo, the 6-year-old son of Agnes Gold (JPN)-May Be Now arrives at Saturday's race off a win in the $100,000 Jonathan Schuster Memorial Stakes at Horseshoe Indianapolis, posting a one-length score in the 1 1/16-mile trek, in a track-record time of 1:39.49.

“When he would race in Argentina, he knows very well how to run a mile with one turn,” said Lobo. “It [E.P. Taylor] reminds me a little bit of the course at San Isidro in Argentina, which he used to run on. He's very accustomed to that, so I believe he will enjoy the course at Woodbine.

“His turn of foot is what comes to mind first for me,” continued Lobo. “He can really put in a powerful late run. Hopefully, there can be some strong early pace and it will set up nicely for him.”

Well-travelled Wakanaka (IRE), owned by Team Valor and Gary Barber, took to the E.P. Taylor Turf Course on July 24 and delivered her connections, including trainer Bill Mott, an impressive win in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly Stakes. The 4-year-old daughter of Power (GB)-Storyline (IRE) sports a record of 7-4-1 from 13 career starts.

Trainer Mark Casse, who won back-to-back runnings of the race, in 2016 with Tepin and in 2017 with World Approval, will chase his third Mile victory with a pair of runners.

March to the Arch, a 7-year-old son of Arch-Daveron (GER), ran second in the 2020 Mile and was fourth last year. The Live Oak homebred, who has three stakes triumphs on the Woodbine green, is 8-5-4 from 33 starts.

Casse's other chance for Mile glory comes in the form of Get Smokin, a graded stakes winner in both 2020 and 2021. The 5-year-old chestnut son of Get Stormy-Hookah Lady is 4-5-2 from 20 starts for Ironhorse Racing Stable, BlackRidge Stables, T-N-T Equine Holdings, and Saratoga Seven Racing Partners. This will be the gelding's first test over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

Finest Sound, a 5-year-old son of Exceed And Excel-Amplifier, is chasing his first stakes win for owner-breeder Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al-Maktoum. His resume includes a trio of runner-up finishes in group events, including the Group 1 Jebel Hatta Sponsored by Emirates Airline. The Simon and Ed Crisford trainee has recorded 16 top-three efforts from 20 starts and has posted a win, two seconds and a third in his past four engagements.

Team Valor International's Homer Screen (BRZ) won five of his six starts in Brazil before heading to the U.S. to compete. The late-closing 6-year-old son of Adriano-Smile Jenny (BRZ) is 5-1-0 from 10 lifetime races. The chestnut, trained by Neil Drysdale, was second, at 28-1, in the Grade 3 American at Santa Anita on June 19.

Mighty Heart, two-time (2020-21) Canadian Horse of the Year, will look to get back to his winning ways in the Mile. Trained by Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Josie Carroll, the 5-year-old son of Dramedy-Emma's Bullseye has contested nine consecutive graded events, winning the Grade 2 Autumn last November at Woodbine. The one-eyed bay, bred and owned by Larry Cordes, is 6-2-5 from 20 starts.

A five-time winner, along with two thirds, from 12 starts, Shirl's Speight rhymed off three straight trips to the winner's circle from January 15 to April 15, capped off by a gutsy nose nod in the Grade 1 Makers Mark Mile. Under the tutelage of dual Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield, the 5-year-old son of Speightstown-Perfect Shirl won his debut, a 7-furlong race over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course, on July 4, 2020, by eight lengths.

Local hero Town Cruise, a 7-year-old son of Town Prize-Candy Cruise, wired last year's field in the Woodbine Mile, delivering Brandon Greer, who trains, owns, and co-bred with his father Terry, the biggest win of his career. The chestnut gelding has fashioned a record of 6-2-1 from 17 career starts. Daisuke Fukumoto, aboard for last year's 8-1 victory, gets the call on Saturday.

Owned by Bruno Schickedanz and trained by Norm McKnight, War Bomber (IRE), a 4-year-old son of War Front-Sun Shower (IRE) rolls into the Mile off an 18-1 upset in the Grade 3 main track Seagram Cup on August 14 at Woodbine. The bay gelding, claimed by Schickedanz for $25,000 last August, brings a mark of 5-0-1 from 11 starts into Saturday's race.

The Ricoh Woodbine Mile program will also feature the Grade 3 $150,000 Seaway Stakes, for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up. Ten starters will chase top prize in the 7-furlong main track event.

Previews of the Summer and Natalma will be posted and distributed tomorrow.

First race post time on Saturday is set for 1:10 p.m. Fans can watch and wager on all the action through HPIbet.com and the Dark Horse Bets app. For more information, visit Woodbine.com.

‘Win & You’re In’: Highfield Princess Wins Dubai Flying Five, Tahiyra Lands Moyglare Stud Stakes At The Curragh

Highfield Princess claimed her third Group 1 victory in 35 days after a brilliant performance in the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Flying Five Stakes (G1) at the Curragh, one of two Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” races Sunday on the second day of the Longines Irish Champions Weekend.

Ridden by Jason Hart, Highfield Princess won her second “Win and You're In” race this year in the $1-million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) division. The 5-year-old mare previously won the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) Aug. 19 at York.

Breaking quickly before traveling strongly under jockey Jason Hart, Highfield Princess made her way to the stands' side rail a furlong out and, having been asked to settle matters, did so in a matter of strides. She pulled away to win by three-quarters of a length, with Erosandpsyche at 22-1 finishing second and Flotus at 18-1 coming home in third. However, this was a one-horse race almost from the moment the stalls opened.

“It's probably her best performance this year,” Hart said. “You don't usually get to take back a furlong and a half out in a five-furlong sprint.

“I was able to sit against her the whole race and when I gave her a squeeze, she picked up really well. She'd run through a brick wall for you and she's a credit to everyone.”

Highfield Princess' trainer, John Quinn, indicated it would be the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint for the mare next. The race was won by another Yorkshire-trained mare in Glass Slippers in 2020.

“All she's done is improve and improve,” Quinn said. “She's phenomenal really. Not racing at two probably helped her and the rest is down to my wonderful staff at home and the filly herself. Her next run will be at the Breeders' Cup and that's the plan.”

A daughter of Night of Thunder out of the Danehill mare Pure Illusion, French-bred Highfield Princess completed the five furlongs in a time of 1:02:51 on a course rated as soft.

Highfield Princess, who has now won 12 races, began her Group 1 streak by taking the Arc Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Aug. 7. She is campaigned by The Trainers House Enterprises Limited.

Tahiyra Storms Clear Of Meditate To Claim Moyglare Stud Stakes

The Aga Khan's exciting Tahiyra stunned the unbeaten Meditate as she powered to victory in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) and earned an automatic starting position into this year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).

A half sister to 2020 Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) heroine Tarnawa, Tahiyra was given a very patient ride by Chris Hayes.

Ryan Moore went for home two furlongs out on even money favorite Meditate but the Dermot Weld-trained Galway maiden winner soon engaged top gear with a furlong to run.

Tahiyra, sent off at 3-1, produced an electric turn of foot, reeling in the leader in a matter of strides and sprinting 2 ¼-lengths clear, with 50-1 Eternal Silence 4 ½ lengths back in third.

“She did it very well and she's beaten a very high class, multiple group-winning filly,” trainer Dermot Weld said. “It was an excellent renewal of the race. I was afraid it might just come a little soon in her career, at Group 1 level, and I've always said what a beautiful filly she would be next spring. She learned a lot the first day, she did it well and enjoyed her race. She learned from it, and she's progressed. We've a lot to look forward to.

Weld suggested that the filly will not run again this year, with next year's European classics in her sights.

He added: “We'll discuss it, but that's it for this year. She's a half sister to Tarnawa, our champion filly. There is tremendous stamina in the pedigree, brilliance, and speed. We'll review it early next spring, but obviously one of the classic trials possibly and then one of the Guineas – Irish, English, or French. But that's a long way down the line.”

A daughter of Siyouni out of the Cape Cross mare Tarana, Tahiyra completed the seven-furlong contest in 1:29:16 over a soft course.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 82 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on Nov. 4-5.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for both Highfield Princess and Tahiyra to start at Keeneland. Breeders' Cup will also provide a travel allowance of US$40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 24 to receive the rewards.

Red Knight Upstages Favorite Gufo In Kentucky Turf Cup Thriller, Earns Breeders’ Cup Berth

Taking the slim lead with a furlong to run, Red Knight had to call upon all his reserves to hold off a determined closing bid from Gufo in a thrilling finish in $1-million Kentucky Turf Cup (G2) Saturday at Kentucky Downs.

With Gerardo Corrales at the reins, Red Knight won by a nose and covered 1 1/2 miles on firm turf in 2:26.96.

Another Mystery was third, a neck behind favorite Gufo.

With the victory, Red Knight garnered an automatic, fees paid berth to the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) Nov. 5 at Keeneland as the Kentucky Cup Turf is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge “Win and You're In” series.

In his previous start, Red Knight won the Colonial Cup Stakes, marking a return from an 11-month layoff. The Kentucky Turf Cup was is his second graded score after taking the 2020 Sycamore Stakes (G3) at Keeneland.

Reserved off the early pace set by Keystone Field, Red Knight was seventh through a mile in 1:38.46. Five wide exiting the turn, he bid at the quarter pole as Highest Honor grabbed a narrow lead, then thrust his head in front with a furlong to run and dug in to prevail when Gufo came calling.

An 8-year-old New York-bred by Pure Prize out of the Skip Away mare Isabel Away, Red Night has a 10-8-1 record from 29 career starts and has $1,210,388 in lifetime earnings after becoming racing's latest millionaire with the $317,130 winner's share of the Kentucky Turf Cup purse.

A Trinity Farm homebred trained by Mike Maker, Red Knight returned $26.04.

Red Knight Upsets Kentucky Turf Cup

Red Knight blew up the tote at 15-1 in the GII Kentucky Turf Cup S. at Kentucky Downs Saturday, earning a spot in the gate for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf in November. Breaking sharply from his inside post, the chestnut settled back near the rear with just three of his 11 rivals beat through an opening half-mile in :49.72. Inching up a bit, but still biding his time through three-quarters in 1:14.52, Red Knight snuck up the outside to be within striking distance approaching the far turn. Four wide at the top of the lane, the gelding hit the front in mid-stretch and held off a late charge from Gufo and Another Mystery to spring the upset.

“He ran a great race at Colonial Downs,” said winning rider Gerardo Corrales. “This is the perfect distance for him, 12 furlongs. Gufo is a three-time Grade I winner. When Gufo came next to Red Knight, Red Knight actually saw him eye to eye and he got additional energy. He just never quit. He just kept trying.”

He added, “I've won two graded races in all my life, and they were this week with Kitodan in the [GIII] Dueling Grounds Derby and now with Red Knight.”

“I thought he was gonna get beat,” said winning trainer Mike Maker. “He dug in and fought hard. He is a fighter, he is a tough horse. He rode hm great and got him to the outside and go the job done.”

Winner of the GIII Sycamore S. back in 2020, Red Knight checked in second to GISW Arklow (Arch) in the GII Louisville S. last May and was fifth to recent GI Sword Dancer S. winner Gufo in the Grand Couturier S. last July. Fifth again in Saratoga's GII Bowling Green S. last summer, he was sixth in the restricted John's Call S. there a month later and was shelved for the season. Transferred from Bill Mott to Mike Maker in the interim, Red Knight rallied to victory in the Colonial Cup S. last out July 27 after 13 months on the sidelines.

Pedigree Notes:

Red Knight is a half-brother to MSW Macagone. Isabel Away's most recent produce is a 4-year-old gelding named Druid (Magician {Ire}).
