Dancing Buck Breaks Through For First Stakes Win in Belmont Turf Sprint, Enters Breeders’ Cup Picture

J and N Stables and Diamond M Stable's Dancing Buck broke sharp and took a lead he never relinquished, storming home to a five-length victory in Saturday's $200,000 Belmont Turf Sprint (G3) during the Belmont at the Big A fall meet at Aqueduct.

Dancing Buck, who trainer Michelle Nevin elevated to graded stakes company for the first time in his 14th career start, broke on top and was sent to the front by jockey Manny Franco as his charge led the nine-horse field through an opening quarter-mile in :23.19 and the half in :46.25 over the yielding outer turf course.

The 4-year-old War Dancer gelding posted five-eighths of a mile in :57.69 and continued strong to the wire, completing six furlongs for 3-year-olds and older in a final time of 1:09.60 for his first career stakes victory.

“I wanted to break sharp and be close, I didn't want him to get parked too far away,” Nevin said. “Manny did a hell of a job getting him out there and to the lead like that.

“He's such a nice, easy-going horse,” Nevin continued. “He'll just wait on the jock to tell him what to do. I wasn't concerned that he was going to go to the lead and go too fast, he's very, very ratable.”

Voodoo Zip edged Yes and Yes by a neck for runner-up status, with Arzak, Thin White Duke, Chewing Gum, Scuttlebuzz, Seven Scents and Value Proposition completing the order of finish. Noble Emotion, Nothing Better, Fauci and main-track only entrant Greeley and Ben were scratched.

Off at 4-1, Dancing Buck returned $10.60 on a $2 win wager. Bred by co-owners J and N Stables in the Empire State, he ran well in a second consecutive stake after running second to Thin White Duke by a nose in the Lucky Coin on September 2. Nevin left open the possibility of targeting the 5 1/2-furlong $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) on November 5 at Keeneland next.

“I'd really like that. I thought he ran huge in Saratoga going five and a half,” Nevin said. “He was unlucky to get nipped up there [in the Lucky Coin].”

Dancing Buck improved his career earnings to $431,770, banking $110,000 in victory.

“I took advantage of the break because he broke so sharp,” Franco said. “I just went on with him and he did the rest. He was nice and comfortable on the lead and he got it done. He's getting better with age and Michelle has been doing a great job with this horse.”

Voodoo Zip, trained by Christophe Clement and ridden by Joel Rosario, rallied from seventh to earn a placing for the first time in three career stakes starts.

“He kept moving forward, but it's tough sometimes when they run away from you like that,” Rosario said. “But he kept moving forward and we're happy with him. He always showed that he finished well in the last part, and that's exactly what he did today. He handled the ground fine. He ran a good race, it's just too bad we couldn't catch the one in front.”

Defunded Earns Classic Berth With Front-Running Awesome Again Triumph

Bob Baffert, sidelined earlier in the year with a 90-day suspension, proved yet again that he is very much “back” as he collected his record eighth win in Saturday's Grade 1, $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., with longshot Defunded. Ridden by Edwin Maldonado, Defunded, made every pole a winning one and easily defeated his heavily favored stablemate Country Grammer by 1 ¾ lengths, giving Baffert the exacta.  A 4-year-old gelding by Dialed In, Defunded got 1 1/8 miles on a fast track in 1:49.38.

A Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” Challenge Series qualifier, the Awesome Again win thus provides Defunded with a fees-paid berth in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland Nov. 5.

Large and in charge through splits of 22.67, 46.70, 1:10.89 and 1:36.06, Defunded, ridden for the first time by Maldonado, never looked a loser in providing the veteran rider with his first career Grade 1 victory.  Most recently a tiring sixth in the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Stakes going seven furlongs, Defunded was off at 5-1 in a field of eight 3-year-olds and up and paid $12.00, $4.60 and $3.40.

Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Defunded, who collected his first-ever graded stakes win, is now 12-4-3-1 overall and with the winner's share of $180,000, he increased his earnings to $518,100.

Although he never threatened the winner, Country Grammer kept to his task late and was game in overhauling Slow Down Andy for the place.  Off at even money under Juan Hernandez, Country Grammer paid $3.00 and $2.40.

Slow Down Andy, who sat second nearly the entire trip, was off at 14-1 under Mario Gutierrez and paid $4.40 to show.

JOCKEY QUOTES

EDWIN MALDONADO, DEFUNDED, WINNER: “It was a very nice trip. Bob told me I had a great shot in this race so put him on the lead. And when Bob says you have a shot, you have a shot. I just want to thank Bob and all the connections for the opportunity, I'm grateful to be here. At the point of my career right now, I was due for a big race. It came through. What better time than the second day in Santa Anita?  A good time.”

TRAINER QUOTES

BOB BAFFERT, DEFUNDED, WINNER: “I'm proud. Defunded ran so well here before and when we got to Del Mar, he just had a melt down in the Paddock and didn't behave himself. Today he was perfect. They all loaded in the gate perfect, and I give Edwin a lot of the credit he is such a great speed rider. I told him I'd throw him a nice horse when we got up here and he rode a perfect race.”

Awesome Strong Caps FTBOA Sire Stakes Sweep With In Reality Victory, Breeders’ Cup Could Be Next

CSLR Racing Partners Awesome distinguished himself as the 10th horse to sweep the colts and geldings division of the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series Saturday at Gulfstream Park, notching a testing victory in the $400,000 In Reality.

The In Reality, the 1 1/16-mile final for the colts and geldings division of the series for juveniles sired by accredited Florida stallions, co-headlined Saturday's FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes program with the $400,000 My Dear Girl, the 1 1/16-mile finals for the fillies division in which Atomically foiled Lynx's bid to sweep the fillies division two races earlier.

“I feel like I'm on Cloud 9,” trainer Jorge Delgado said. “I'm happy to join the names of the trainers that swept the series, knowing how hard it is to do. Earlier on the card, the filly that was the favorite, lost. Things can happen and another horse can come in and beat you.”

Awesome Strong was sent to post as the 4-5 favorite in a field of 12 after dominating the first two legs of the FSS series, the $100,000 Dr. Fager at six furlongs and the $200,000 Affirmed at seven furlongs.

The son of Awesome Slew was somewhat slow away from the starting gate from his No. 8 post and was forced to race wide on the first turn while sandwiched between horses. Apocalypso showed the way along the backstretch, setting fractions of :22.56 and :46 for the first half mile while chased by Diamond Cool, Commandant and Turbo with Awesome Strong starting to advance on the far outside.

Awesome Strong made a sweeping move on the far turn to engage Apocalypso on the turn into the homestretch before sprinting clear at the top of the stretch under Miguel Vasquez. Apocalypse dropped back as 70-1 longshot Tigre made a strong bid along the rail, but Awesome Strong held gamely to prevail by 1 ½ lengths.

“I wasn't happy with the post position, but you can't change that. He overcame that. Miguel did a fantastic job. The horse always shows up and comes through,” Delgado said. “The horse lost some ground on the first turn and had to race wide. The whole race he had to race wide. He overcame that and still had something left to win the race.”

Awesome Strong ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:46.58 with his fourth victory without defeat while pulling off the series sweep.

Smile was the first to sweep the colts and geldings division of the FSS series in 1984. Naked Greed (1991), Seacliff (1995), Sir Oscar (2003), Express Tour (2000), Big Drama (2008), Jackson Bend (2009), Fort Loudon (2011) and Three Rules (2016) have also swept the series.

“He proved he can rate,” Vasquez said. “I wanted to get him closer to the back and let him make his run.”

Tigre, who had finished third in the Armed Forces on Tapeta only seven days earlier, finished 3 ¾ lengths ahead of Knox.

Awesome Strong debuted impressively at Gulfstream May 6 at Gulfstream, breaking free of traffic on the turn to score by six lengths, completing 4 ½ furlongs in a swift 51.62 seconds. CSLR Ranch Partners' Bill Childs and son Alex Childs took notice and proceeded to purchase him for $500,000, agreeing to the steep price tag knowing that the son of Awesome Slew was eligible for the lucrative FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series.

Awesome Strong came back to dominate the Aug. 5 Dr. Fager. Away from the gate alertly, he set a solid pace along the backstretch and far turn before drawing clear in the stretch by 4 ¾ lengths in the six-furlong first leg of the Florida Sire Stakes. He became eligible for his series sweep in the Sept. 3 Affirmed at seven furlongs with a three-lengths victory after closely stalking the pace and drawing clear in the stretch.

Saturday's sweep had left open the possibility of Awesome Strong returning in the Nov. 4 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Keeneland.

“We talked about if he can do it here, possibly we go to the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland and run there,” Alex Childs said. “We don't want to strain on him. But if he can come back good, we may give it a shot.”

Dialed In’s Defunded Upsets the Awesome Again

Defunded, who had been knocking on the door at the graded level for the last year and a half, picked a good time to break through as he led home a one-two for Bob Baffert in this “Win and You're In” qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Classic.

Runner-up in both the GIII Affirmed S. and GIII Los Alamitos Derby last term, the chestnut was transferred to Sean McCarthy for his first two tries of 2022–a dominant optional claiming tally going a local mile and a runner-up finish in the GI Hollywood Gold Cup over 10 panels May 30. He hadn't shown much in two recent tries back in the Baffert barn at Del Mar, however, as he finished seventh behind several of these in the July 30 GII San Diego H. and sixth cutting back for the Aug. 27 GII Pat O'Brien S.

With the absence of divisional dominator Flightline (Tapit) providing the others with a chance to make the lead and maybe even win, Defunded was given the most aggressive ride early under speed specialist Edwin Maldonado. He posted an opening quarter of :22.67 with headstrong Slow Down Andy in nearest pursuit, but was able to slow it down from there somewhat to post a half in :46.70 and six panels in 1:10.89. Slow Down Andy took a big run at the pacesetter and looked like a winner as they pointed for home, but Defunded punched back and kept on from there to win with room to spare. Country Grammer, the G1 Dubai World Cup winner who was 19 1/4 lengths behind Flightline when second best in the Sept. 3 GI TVG Pacific Classic S., grinded his way into second.

“It was a very nice trip,” said the winning pilot. “Bob told me I had a great shot in this race so put him on the lead. And when Bob says you have a shot, you have a shot. I just want to thank Bob and all the connections for the opportunity, I'm grateful to be here. At the point of my career right now, I was due for a big race. It came through. What better time than the second day in Santa Anita? A good time.”

Baffert said, “I'm proud. Defunded ran so well here before and when we got to Del Mar, he just had a meltdown in the paddock and didn't behave himself. Today he was perfect. They all loaded in the gate perfect, and I give Edwin a lot of the credit he is such a great speed rider. I told him I'd throw him a nice horse when we got up here and he rode a perfect race.”

Pedigree Notes:

With 22 black-type winners to his name, Dialed In has quietly amassed eight graded winners and ranks among the top 30 active North American sires of 2022. Winner of the 2011 GI Florida Derby himself, he's now sired the winners of the GI Arkansas Derby and the GI American Pharoah S., in addition to the Awesome Again, and has had runners place in the G1 Dubai World Cup, two Breeders' Cups, the G1 Travers S., and several more Grade I events while spending his tenure at Darby Dan Farm near Lexington.

Defunded also adds to Touch Gold's tally as a broodmare sire, giving that pensioner 68 stakes winners out of his daughters. Inbred 4×4 to 1992 Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise (Secretariat) through her Classic-winning sons A.P. Indy on top and Summer Squall on bottom, Defunded has a yearling full-sister, as well as a 2-year-old half-sister named Capital Lights (Lookin At Lucky) that sold for $40,000 to  PT Syndicate #1 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October Yearling sale. Defunded's third dam Tivli produced GSW Reunited (Dixie Union), best known as the dam of MGISW Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}), a new stallion at Lane's End who is expecting his first foals in 2023.
