TAA Named Breeders’ Cup Aftercare Partner

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) will once again be named the Official Aftercare Partner of the Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 4-5 at Keeneland. The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is also an Official Charity of the Breeders' Cup, along with Race Track Chaplaincy of America and the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, among others.

As a seed money donor, the Breeders' Cup has been a supporter of the TAA since its inception 10 years ago and the organization will present its Grade II namesake race–formerly the Marathon S.–on Saturday's championship undercard.

“As a founding donor for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, it brings the Breeders' Cup great pride to be able to feature the TAA as the official Aftercare Partner,” said Dora Delgado, Breeders' Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer. “The TAA's growth, both in the number of accredited organizations and in the amount of grant money awarded, has been a tremendous feat, and it seems only fitting to culminate the TAA's 10-year celebration center-stage at the World Championships.”

Racing fans can donate to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance throughout the championship weekend when cashing a winning ticket on an UnitedTote Systems self-service betting terminal. All donations are tax-deductible.

“I can't think of a better place to close out our 10-year celebration than the Breeders' Cup World Championships,” said TAA President, Jeffrey Bloom. “Breeders' Cup's ongoing recognition and support has been instrumental in the TAA's growth, which is necessary to further our mission to help fund retired racehorses. We're honored to ring in another year as the Official Aftercare Partner at the World Championships of horse racing.”

Repole: ‘Special’ Nest To Continue Racing At Age 4

Regardless of her result in the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland at Nov. 5, plans call for likely champion 3-year-old filly Nest to return to the races next year at age four. Co-owner Mike Repole broke the news to the Daily Racing Form on Monday, just one day after the filly's 9 3/4-length win in the Grade 2 Beldame Stakes.

“We're not even going to put people on edge,” Repole told DRF. “She's racing at 4. She's so special. She's a Curlin [progeny]. This is now three [straight] wow performances. She's just getting better and better every start.”

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Nest has won five of her seven starts this year, including three Grade 1 races: the G1 Alabama (by 4 1/4 lengths), the G1 Coaching Club American Oaks (by 12 1/4 lengths), and the G1 Ashland (by 8 1/4 lengths). She also finished second in the G1 Kentucky Oaks and the G1 Belmont Stakes.

Overall, Nest's record stands at seven wins from 10 starts for earnings of $1,873,050.

‘He Doesn’t Seem Like A 2-Year-Old’: Packs A Wahlop Breeders’ Cup Bound After Zuma Beach Win

A rangy gray colt by Creative Cause, Packs a Wahlop has a stride to match and he proved much best in Sunday's $200,000 Zuma Beach Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita as he glided to a facile 2 ¾-length win.

In garnering his third consecutive win and second one-mile turf stakes victory, Packs a Wahlop stamped his ticket to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) Nov. 4 at Keeneland. Trained by Jeff Mullins and owned by Red Baron's Barn LLC and Rancho Temescal LLC, Packs a Wahlop got the trip in 1:34.07 on turf rated as firm.

Attentive to the early pace while a restrained in third, 1 1/2 lengths off longshot pacesetter Castleknock into the first turn, Packs a Wahlop settled into a rhythmic stride up the backside, drew even with Castleknock with a furlong to run, and won with his ears pricked under at hand ride from Mike Smith.

“On top of such a big, beautiful stride, this horse is just so athletic,” said Smith, who collected his second stakes on the day. “He doesn't seem like a 2-year-old, I swear, he's four! He's naturally quick, with a very high cruising speed so he puts you right where you need to be.

“If they let him go, he'll keep on running and if someone else wants to go, he settles in behind them. I mean, when I asked him to run, he just opens up that stride and it's crazy. … It feels great to win two stakes today. Keeping me young. I'm going back in age.”

Ridden for the third consecutive time by Smith after running fourth on a sloppy main track in his debut at Gulfstream Park June 3, Packs a Wahlop was the even-money favorite among 11 juveniles and paid $4.

Packs a Wahlop, who was purchased $270,000 earlier this year at the OBS Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training, notched his first graded stakes win and entered Sunday's race off a victory in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf.

With the winner's share of $120,000, Packs a Wahlop, who is out of the City Zip mare City by the Bay, has earnings of $230,000. He was bred in Kentucky by Oak Ridge Farm.

“He's probably one of the best ones I've had my hands on for a while,” said Mullins. “When he was in Florida, he was doing things that were not normal. … Unfortunately, he hit a muddy track (at Gulfstream) and didn't really handle it that well. Once he hit the grass, I mean…(His form) may even transfer to the dirt, he's just a really nice horse.”

Off at 44-1 with Edwin Maldonado, Castlerock stayed gamely for the place, finishing 1 ¼ lengths in front of 12-1 Malibu Coast under Ramon Vazquez.

Fractions on the race were :22.85, :46.70, 1:10.57, and 1:22.34.

Pack a Wahlop was the second graded stakes Sunday for Airdrie Stud resident sire Creative Cause, whose son King Cause captured the Knickerbocker (G3) at the Belmont at the Big A meet.

‘I Think This Will Buy Us A Ticket To The Breeders’ Cup’: Comanche Country Wins Surfer Girl To Keep Her North American Record Perfect

Ridden with supreme confidence by Umberto Rispoli, Phil D'Amato's Irish-bred Comanche Country remained unbeaten in three one-mile turf starts in Southern California as she rallied for a half length win in Sunday's $200,000 Surfer Girl Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita.

With the distance completed in 1:35.20, it's on to the $1-million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) Nov. 4 at Keeneland.

As she did in both her maiden win on July 30 and listed Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf Sept. 10, Comanche Country rated kindly in the run to the first turn. Midpack, about three lengths off early leader Queenzy in a field of eight juvenile fillies at the half mile mark, Rispoli hugged the rail the to the top of the lane tipped out to the three path and Comanche Country responded with a solid stretch rally to run down Sell the Dream late and win going away.

“This filly, she just continues to get better and better,” said D'Amato, who registered his fourth stakes win on day six of Santa Anita's Autumn Meet. “Umberto rode her with a lot of confidence. He gave her a nice ground-saving ride, he angled out and she wanted to win today. I think this will buy us a ticket to the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland.”

Heavily favored at 4-5, Comanche Country paid $3.60.

Owned by Little Red Feather Racing, Sterling Stables LLC, and Marsha Naify, Comanche Country, who was winless in two Irish starts, is unbeaten in her three North American starts, and with her first graded stakes victory, she picked up $120,000, increasing her earnings to $231,287.

For her part, California-bred Sell the Dream ran too good to lose. A close third at the three-furlong pole, she overtook Queenzy inside the eighth pole, opened up a half length but couldn't hold off the winner late, finishing 1 ½ lengths in front of longshot Bolt's Broad.

Fractions on the race were :22.62, :47.22, 1:11.26, and 1:23.19.

UMBERTO RISPOLI, COMANCHE COUNTRY, WINNER: “I had the spot I wanted, I was on the fence and saved ground. On the backstretch I just used her a little bit to make sure that I could hold my position. Around the turn, I knew the horse was able to carry me to the wire. I was just waiting for the quarter pole to put her in the clear. She did the rest, she carried four pounds over a majority of the others, so it was a big effort.”
