Appleby Aiming To Outstrip Last Year’s Breeders’ Cup Hat-Trick

NEWMARKET, UK–The Breeders' Cup has special resonance for Charlie Appleby, who trained his first Grade I winner at the championships not four months into his tenure as trainer for Godolphin back in 2013.

That important first milestone was provided by Darley homebred Outstrip (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) in the Juvenile Turf, and if the American race fans didn't pay much attention to Appleby that day, they do now, for it was a win which set the tone for the years to follow, not just at the Breeders' Cup, but in top-level races in North America generally. Rarely does an Appleby runner under-perform when sent stateside, and more often than not they will return with another trophy to add to the overflowing sideboards in the trainer's office at Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket.

Behind his desk, neatly spaced, are three matching trophies from Del Mar last year, when Appleby and his newly-crowned champion jockey for 2022, William Buick, took Del Mar by storm. As important as those victories were for the racing stable, the icing on the cake for Sheikh Mohammed's vast breeding operation was the fact that Yibir (GB), Space Blues (Ire) and Modern Games (Ire) are all homebred sons of Darley's flagship stallion, Dubawi (Ire).

“It was a big win,” says Appleby casting his mind back to Outstrip while catching up with some Australian racing on TV before heading out to oversee his first lot. “And it was one of those very surreal moments. To stand at Santa Anita with that backdrop and watching your first Grade 1 winner go by the line…”

He tails off, momentarily reliving a significant moment in his own career, which has gone from strength to strength in subsequent seasons to see him crowned champion trainer in Britain last year for the first time. It is a title he is odds-on to retain as 2022 draws to a close.

“Look, I'd been in the operation for a long time before that, so you always know what these moments mean, but when you're holding that trophy, and my name was next to it, that does really give you an amazing feeling, and a feeling that you want more,” he adds.

“So the Breeders' Cup always been a meeting that we've campaigned. I'm not saying we've campaigned hard, but I feel that we've always tried to find the right horses to be the most competitive anyway. And thankfully, it's so far been a lucky hunting ground.”

In 2017 came the turn of Wuheida (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the Filly & Mare Turf, while Line Of Duty (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) gave Appleby his second strike in the Juvenile Turf the following year. That race has now gone the trainer's way three times, though last year's success was not without drama. One of his two intended starters in the race, Albahr (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), became fractious in the stalls, forcing him and his stablemate Modern Games to be removed from the gates. In a tumultuous few moments ahead of the start, it initially appeared as if both horses had been scratched from the race, but eventually Modern Games and Buick were reinstated and went on to win, with chaos ensuing for punters.

“Last year was an amazing year. I felt that we added plenty of drama to the meeting as well,” says Appleby with no little understatement.

“Walking away with three homebred winners and all three of them by Dubawi, I did say to the team there, as much as we say 'well, that was great', we must try harder next year to better that. That might take a little bit of surpassing though, because it was a huge achievement by everybody and we were very proud to walk off the racetrack with what we'd achieved.”

Indeed, it will be hard to top those results at Keeneland this year, but the Appleby team—and the trainer consistently refers to the stable's success as 'we' rather than 'I'—certainly plans to give it a good old rattle.

The one thing I'm confident of with Naval Crown is that he's got gate speed in abundance

The seven runners bound for Kentucky all came through their last piece of fast work on Wednesday in good heart, and will continue with routine canters until shipping on Saturday. With Space Blues now at Kildangan Stud in Ireland and Yibir not travelling, it falls to Modern Games to lead the raiders as he bids to add the Breeders' Cup Mile to his victory last year. In the interim, he became Appleby's third Guineas winner of 2022 when landing the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, following the victory of the late Coreoebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the 2000 Guineas and Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Modern Games has already made another trip back across the Atlantic this year to win the GI Woodbine Mile.

“When unfortunately Coroebus didn't turn up for the Sussex Stakes, it was felt that Modern Games was the substitute. But he posted one of the closest finishes to Baaeed when finishing second in the Sussex. He then went to Canada and won very well there,” says Appleby.

“Then with the QEII on Champions Day, as the rain came down again on the day, I thought 'should we really be running this horse?'. But he was in great order, and as always, he went out on his shield, finishing second in ground that William said he hated from start to finish.

“It won't be too soft at Keeneland. I imagine Kinross will start favourite, but he's up there and in great order.”

The statuesque Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is one of two Godolphin runners, along with Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), being aimed at the Breeders' Cup Turf, claimed last year by Yibir. The four-year-old has had quite the season, with four straight wins culminating in back-to-back Group 1s in Germany over 1m4f.

Appleby says of Rebel's Romance, “He's a past UAE Derby winner and he went out to America on the back end of that winter in Dubai to potentially participate in the Kentucky Derby, but he met with setbacks out there so that didn't materialise. We went back out to Dubai to try and continue his dirt career, which again didn't materialise last winter, but he's been a revelation since we switched him to the turf.

“He stays well, he's got the experience, he's well travelled. I think he's a big player on the night. He'll be joined by Nation's Pride, who's a three-year-old coming into it with a similar profile to Yibir. Obviously they both won the Jockey Club Derby Invitational en route to the Breeders' Cup. But prior to that, Nation's Pride does bring a bit more American experience to the table as well.”

That experience  was provided by the son of Teofilo heading straight from his eighth-place finish at Epsom in the Derby to take second in the GI Belmont Derby before winning the GI Saratoga Derby.

Appleby adds, “Nations Pride will probably go off favourite on the day. William [Buick] will ride him and James [Doyle] will ride Rebel's Romance; they're two live players.”

If he gets a good draw, [Silver Knott] is probably the horse they've all got to beat realistically

The trainer is also double-handed in the Turf Sprint with the Dubawi duo of Naval Crown (GB) and Creative Force (Ire), who finished first and second, a neck separating them, in the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot.

“They are both rock solid little horses,” states Appleby. “Creative Force had a break after the summer and we were delighted with his reappearance run on Champions Day, finishing third. He's definitely come forward for that run.

“Naval Crown has got quicker, dare I say it, as the season's gone on. But it hasn't quite gone right for him since the Platinum Jubilee. He ran a good race in the July Cup [when second to Alcohol Free] but was disappointing on very quick ground [at Haydock] and then obviously disappointed on the soft ground on Champions Day. “But the one thing I'm confident of with Naval Crown is that he's got gate speed in abundance. That's what's needed over there, so that's a tick for him. He's got experience and I think he'll enjoy being back on a turning track.”

Appleby also takes aim once more at the Juvenile Turf, this time with the smart Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), who already has a pair of Group 3 wins to his credit, and whose yearling half-brother by Dubawi was recently recruited to the Godolphin team for next year to the tune of 1,500,000gns at Tattersalls.

“His form has worked out quite well and, dare I say it, he has a profile similar to Outstrip,” notes the trainer. “He's competed at a nice level and a sounder surface will suit him, so hopefully we will get that. If he gets a good draw, he's probably the horse they've all got to beat realistically.”

Completing the septet is the G3 Sirenia S. winner Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), who was subsequently fourth to Blackbeard (Ire) in the G1 Middle Park S. and will line up in the Juvenile Turf Sprint.

“He's got plenty of natural pace and he's definitely a player,” Appleby adds.

“As we all know, you've got to have a lot of luck around there. You've got to travel well, you've got to acclimatise well. And in the shorter-distance events, you have to have a draw. So there's still a few more hurdles to get over, but it's an exciting team to be taking out there.”

How Can You Beat Him? Classic Trainers Mull Over Challenge Of Undefeated Flightline

Trainer John Sadler was watching the U.S. Open on television when he was struck by words printed on the wall behind the tennis players: “Pressure is a privilege.”

Heading into next Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic with the overwhelming favorite in undefeated Flightline, the world's highest-rated horse, Sadler couldn't help but agree.

“The pressure is there, you know, because he's going to be a heavy favorite,” Sadler told media on Wednesday's Breeders' Cup teleconference. “This is the kind of pressure you want… We've got a week and a half to go, and it's one step at a time. Expectations are sky high, I understand that, but this is horse racing so we're just gonna keep even-keeled and look forward to a week from Saturday.”

Pre-entries for the 2022 World Championships were announced on Wednesday, with eight other horses potentially lining up to face the 4-year-old Flightline (Tapit).

“It's a really good field,” Sadler said. “You have the ascending 3-year-olds, Epicenter, Taiba, and the Derby winner (Rich Strike), and then those older horses that are terrific, Life Is Good and Olympiad. It's a bunch of really nice horses, and it's going to be a good race.”

Flightline's final prep for the Breeders' Cup came in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic, in which he dominated by 19 1/4 lengths.

“I think you certainly have to rate his race in the Pacific Classic as one of the greatest performances any horse has ever run,” said Sadler. “He's a very good athlete, no doubt about that. As far as what's different, he's a horse that's just an exceptional horse. He's kind of like Lebron James; he's just a one-of-a-kind kind of horse.”

Overall, Flightline has won his five starts by a combined 62 ¾ lengths. Sadler has masterfully coordinated the colt's campaign through a number of setbacks, including a quarter crack before the start of last year's Del Mar meet and bone bruising in a hock earlier this year, but the trainer believes Flightline is more than ready for the challenge that awaits him at Keeneland.

“Ever since the Pacific Classic everything has gone really well,” Sadler said. “The timing of this race is closer than his last two starts, so we've been training him up for it, and everything's going really well.”

Flightline has one final work planned for Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. at Keeneland.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher may well have the second choice in the Classic with Life Is Good (Into Mischief), a winner of 9 of his 11 starts for earnings of over $4.3 million. The 4-year-old enters the Classic off three straight wins, including the G1 Whitney and G1 Woodward.

“(Life Is Good) is a very, very gifted horse,” Pletcher said. “It's remarkable to us how consistent he has been. He trains well every day, shows good energy and enthusiasm every morning, and all of his breezes have been outstanding.”

Pletcher said he watched Flightline's performance in the Pacific Classic on television from Saratoga, and was certainly impressed by the undefeated colt.

“He's a tremendous horse,” Pletcher summarized. “He has the ability to cruise and accelerate, and he showed that mile and a quarter is not a problem.”

As to how Life Is Good can defeat Flightline, Pletcher remained close-lipped.

“Luckily he's been very good from the gate, and he's got so much natural speed, we don't want to take anything away from him,” the trainer said. “We'll kind of play it by ear for now, look at how the track is playing and how the conditions come up… It will be an interesting jockeys' race, for sure.”

Pletcher will have another entrant in the Classic as well in 5-year-old Grade 1 winner Happy Saver (Super Saver).

“He's a super competitive horse, and he always gives us a good effort,” said Pletcher. “Obviously, the thing in his benefit would be a good pace up from where they kind of softened each other up and set things up for him.”

Life Is Good's former trainer, Bob Baffert, believes the Classic may be a much tighter race than many people seem to believe.

“There's two super horses,” Baffert told the Daily Racing Form. “Life Is Good, they quit talking about him. He's a top-caliber horse, I had him and I know. Believe me, there's not a lot separating those two top horses and that's why it's going to be a great Classic.”

Baffert will send out his own entrant in the Classic, as well, with Pennsylvania Derby winner Taiba (Gun Runner).

“He needs to raise it up a notch,” Baffert admitted. “You don't know what's going to happen with those other two horses. I watched Flightline breeze here, I don't see a chink in the armor. He looked fabulous.”

Doug O'Neill, trainer of Classic hopeful Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow), agreed.

“If Flightline shows up like the Flightline we've seen so far, everyone's running for second,” O'Neill told DRF.

The 4-year-old Hot Rod Charlie has proven he loves a fight, especially after the ding-dong battle with fellow Classic pre-entrant and Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike last out in the G2 Lukas Classic. O'Neill argued that with a lifetime record of 5-5-4 from 18 starts, Hot Rod Charlie shouldn't be thrown out of the mix.

“He's a funny horse, he wants to fight,” O'Neill continued. “If everything gets kind of easy the wire sometimes comes up before the fight begins. With Flightline and Life Is Good, I'm not sure you want to go right at them. Still, it doesn't mean you can't get involved in some sort of fight at some point.”

Epicenter's trainer, Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, is also ready to put his 3-year-old son of Not This Time up against the undefeated Flightline. Epicenter will enter the Classic starting gate off two wins in a row, the G2 Jim Dandy and the G1 Travers.

“I'm all for it,” he told DRF. “We'll be ready to run as fast as we can run.”

The presence of Flightline also influenced the decision of Rich Strike's trainer, Eric Reed.

“The decision would be easier if the Breeders' Cup was at Churchill Downs and there wasn't a Flightline,” the trainer told Churchill Downs' media team last week. “And it is not only Flightline, but there is Life Is Good and Olympiad and Epicenter.”

Epicenter was the horse Rich Strike (Keen Ice) ran down in the final sixteenth of a mile in the Kentucky Derby and a horse he likely would have to beat again to possibly claim the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male.

“I know Rich Strike is a better horse than he was at the Derby, and (Epicenter) is, too,” Reed said. “And I would have to beat him again and not just by a nose (to earn the championship).”

Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who will saddle Olympiad (Speightstown) in the Classic, has similar feelings about Flightline.

“I have the greatest respect for him,” Mott said during Wednesday's teleconference. “I know he's very talented, I don't think anybody is really going to question that… I think he won the Pacific Classic in an absolute gallop, like he did it easily, though it didn't seem like some of the horses in behind him ran their best races, because there were some useful horses in behind him.

“I'm just anxious to see the race, he's gonna have to face the best group of horses he's faced so far. That's what it's all about.”

Olympiad will come into the Classic off a win in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, a rebound from his penultimate start when fourth in the G1 Whitney behind Life Is Good, Happy Saver, and Hot Rod Charlie, respectively.

“He was just a little dull that day, for no real reason other than maybe the heat,” Mott suggested.

Above all, Mott said, he's looking forward to watching the Classic as a fan.

“(Flightline) will have to be good on the day, because I think this is a very competitive Classic,” said Mott. “It's a great spectator's race. Being a racing fan, and somebody who likes to watch really good horses, I'm excited. I'm like everybody else, though I'm lucky enough to have a horse in there, but I'm anxious to see what happens.”

Asked about where Flightline stands in regard to the all-time greats of the sport, Mott wasn't quite ready to name the rising star among them.

“Whether it be human or equine, I think the true test of the champion is the test of time,” Mott said. “When you look at the great horses of our past, like Spectacular Bid, Forego, Kelso, those horses raced several seasons. There's always been in-between horses that are extremely talented but didn't go on and have a career. It's nice when you see a potentially great horse race for more than one season, because the fans start to become familiar with them. That's what our sport needs, it needs a Spectacular Bid, a Cigar, a Secretariat; it brings people out to the races.”

Rich History Of Laurel Futurity In Play As ‘Maturing’ Congruent Takes On Breeders’ Cup Juvenile

Tami Bobo and Lugamo Racing Stable's Congruent, impressive winner of the $150,000 Laurel Futurity Oct. 1 at Laurel Park, will make his next start in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Keeneland.

Pre-entries were announced Wednesday for all 14 races worth more than $31 million in purses at the 39th Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 4 and 5 in Lexington, Ky. Congruent was also pre-entered in the $1 million Juvenile Turf (G1), where he has first preference but is the third of four also-eligibles in a field limited to 14 starters.

Congruent, trained by South Florida-based Antonio Sano, was among 12 horses pre-entered in the 1 1/16-mile Juvenile that include Breeders' Cup Challenge Series winners Blazing Sevens, Cave Rock and Forte.

“The decision has been made and he's going to run on the dirt,” Lugamo's Luis Gavignano said. “That's a decision that actually we made this morning. In any of the races there's going to be good horses. I know [Cave Rock] and [Forte] are good, but I think we have a good horse on our hands, as well. And he's improving each day.”

A maiden special weight winner second time out in mid-August over his home track of Gulfstream Park, Congruent became a stakes winner in the Laurel Futurity, which was rained off the grass and contested at one mile on a sloppy and sealed main track.

Congruent settled in third behind pacesetter Splendor Beauty before gaining the lead in upper stretch and rolling to a 2 ½-length victory in the Laurel Futurity, which has a rich history dating back to inaugural 1921 winner Morvich, who would go on to capture the 1922 Kentucky Derby (G1).

The Laurel Futurity has also been won by Triple Crown champions Affirmed, Citation and Secretariat along with such horses as Barbaro, In Reality, Honest Pleasure, Quadrangle, Riva Ridge, Spectacular Bid and Congruent's sire, Tapit.

Bred in Kentucky by Tapit Syndicate and Glencrest Farm, Congruent has breezed twice since his victory in the Laurel Futurity. He went five furlongs in 1:00.98 over the main track at Parx Oct. 15, ranking seventh of 26 horses, and five-eighths on the Keeneland turf in 1:02.40 Oct. 22, third-fastest of six horses.

“We saw that there were so many entries in the turf race, I think he will be ineligible if we decide to go to the turf. If we race on the dirt, he will be automatically in,” Gavignano said. “He has run well on the dirt and he has breezed better on the dirt than the turf, to be honest with you. So, we like him better there.

Gavignano said Congruent is scheduled to breeze again Friday at Keeneland with jockey Luis Saez, who will be up for the first time in the Breeders' Cup. A winner of nearly 3,100 career races, Saez's only Breeders' Cup victory came in the 2020 Juvenile aboard Essential Quality.

Congruent will be the first Breeders' Cup starter for the owners. Sano has been to the Breeders' Cup with Bon Accord, fourth in the 2013 Juvenile Turf, and Gunnevera, respectively running fifth and second in the 2017 and 2018 Classic (G1).

“These 2-year-olds, they change every day and they improve every day, and he's doing that. He's maturing every single week,” Gavignano said. “The adrenaline is building up every single day as we talk about this. This is a lifetime experience, and having a horse capable of running there and competing there is a very exciting time for us.”

Augustin Stables' homebred Born Dapper, winner of the $150,000 Selima for 2-year-old fillies on the same program as the Laurel Futurity, was pre-entered in both the $2 million Juvenile Fillies (G1) and $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).Trained by Jonathan Thomas, she is the fourth alternate in the Juvenile Fillies and eighth alternate in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Aloha West, bred in Maryland by Laurel Park-based trainer Katy Voss and the late Bob Manfuso, was pre-entered to defend his title in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) Nov. 5. The Wayne Catalano trainee has not raced since winning the July 2 Kelly's Landing at Churchill Downs.

Graham Motion, based at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md., pre-entered four horses in five races led by Madaket Stables, Little Red Feather Racing and William Strauss' Nagirroc, who earned automatic entry to the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) Nov. 4 for his victory in the Oct. 9 Futurity (G3) at Aqueduct. Nagirroc was also pre-entered and has first preference in the Juvenile Turf.

Other pre-entered Motion horses are Grade 1-placed G Laurie in the Juvenile Fillies Turf; May 14 Man o'War (G1) and Oct. 14 Sycamore (G3) winner Highland Chief, the latter at Keeneland; and 2020 Saranac (G3) winner Bye Bye Melvin, second in the 2020 James W. Murphy and fourth in the 2021 Dinner Party (G2), both at historic Pimlico Race Course.

The $6 million Classic, to be headlined by the undefeated Flightline, saw nine pre-entries including three horses with Maryland ties: Travers (G1) winner Epicenter and Fountain of Youth (G2) winner Simplification, respectively second and sixth in the 147th Preakness Stakes May 21; and Happy Saver, who became a stakes winner in the 2020 Federico Tesio at Laurel before going on to beat elders in that year's Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). He has since gone on to place in six graded-stakes including the 2021 Jockey Club, Suburban (G2) and Clark and 2022 Alysheba (G2), Met Mile (G1) and Whitney (G1).

Caravel, winner of the 2021 The Very One at Pimlico, and Arrest Me Red, a 2-year-old debut winner at Laurel Park in August 2020, were pre-entered in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) Nov. 5.

“Once again we could not be more proud with the outstanding quality of horses from around the world that have been pre-entered for this year's World Championships for a spectacular two days of racing with our host track partner Keeneland,” said Drew Fleming, Breeders' Cup President and CEO. “We applaud the men and women across the globe who are preparing these magnificent Thoroughbreds for their ultimate tests of competition on Nov. 4-5. It is also important to recognize our breeders and nominators and their support and commitment in funding the purses and awards for the World Championships.”
