KY Derby, Oaks Winners Rich Strike, Secret Oath Could Put End To Unique Drought At Breeders’ Cup

It's been eight years since both the winners of the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1) have run in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) and Distaff (G1), respectively, but, with less than one week out from the World Championship event at Keeneland, this year's winners Rich Strike and Secret Oath are on target to break that streak.

The last duo of Derby and Oaks winners to run in that same year's Breeders' Cup Classic and Distaff were California Chrome, who finished third in the Classic to Bayern, and Untapable, who won the Distaff.

Red-TR Racing's Rich Strike, the 81-1 upset winner of the Kentucky Derby, has already arrived at Keeneland to prepare for the $6-million Breeders' Cup Classic.

Briland Farm's Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Oath trained at 5:30 a.m. (ET) Sunday morning at Churchill Downs under the watchful eye of her trainer D. Wayne Lukas. She's pre-entered for the $2-million Breeders' Cup Distaff (GI) and is scheduled to have her final work Monday.

Secret Oath is scheduled to face last year's Kentucky Oaks winner Malathaat in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Other Kentucky Oaks alumni that are scheduled to run in the Breeders' Cup include Echo Zulu (Filly and Mare Sprint) and Nest (Distaff).

Runners that previously competed in the Kentucky Derby that are pre-entered in the Breeders' Cup are Cyberknife (Dirt Mile), Epicenter (Classic), Long Range Toddy (Sprint), O Besos (Sprint) and Taiba (Classic).

Asmussen Trio Tune Up at Keeneland

Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen sent out a trio of breezers Sunday morning at Keeneland to their final preparations for next weekend's Breeders' Cup World Championships. GI Classic contender Epicenter (Not This Time) covered a half-mile in an easy :50.80 (23/25); GI Juvenile Fillies-bound Grand Love (Gun Runner) went the same distance in :50.20 (19/25); and streaking GI Distaff hopeful Society (Gun Runner) got the half-mile in :49.60 (12/25).

“Epicenter worked a nice, smooth half-mile,” Asmussen said. “I am extremely pleased with how he is coming into the Classic.”

The six-time Breeders' Cup-winning conditioner added, “The track is in excellent shape, and it was a typical week of work for us. I am extremely happy with who we have and the shape they are in.”

Asmussen is expected to work four more of his Breeders' Cup contenders on Monday.

One other notable Breeders' Cup runner to work Sunday in Lexington was Edgeway (Competitive Edge), who will aim to go one better than she did in last year's GI F/M Sprint and who covered five furlongs in a bullet 1:00.20 (1/14).

“We looked at the weather and made up our minds this morning to work, even though it was coming back in five days,” trainer John Sadler said, alluding to a wet forecast for Sunday into Monday. “She went a minute and change and galloped out in 1:13, and she was well within herself. It was very good–nice and smooth.”

‘She Was Well Within Herself’: Edgeway Drills Another Bullet Workout At Keeneland Ahead Of Second Crack At BC Filly And Mare Sprint

Hronis Racing's Edgeway, runner-up in last year's Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) at Del Mar, completed her major preparations for this year's renewal Sunday at Keeneland.

The 5-year-old Competitive Edge mare breezed five furlongs in 1:00.20 under Juan Leyva. The work was the fastest of 14 timed moves at the distance.

“We looked at the weather and made up our minds this morning to work, even though it was coming back in five days,” trainer John Sadler said, alluding to a forecast that called for rain most of the day Sunday and into Monday. “She went a minute and change and galloped out (six furlongs) in 1:13, and she was well within herself. It was very good – nice and smooth.”

It was the second local work for Edgeway, who fired a bullet half-mile in :46 last Tuesday.

“She is coming into this race very similar to last year,” Sadler said. “She repeated in the Rancho Bernardo (G3) (Aug. 28), and she was flattered by the (Todd) Fincher filly (Slammed), who (was second in the Rancho Bernardo) won the (Thoroughbred Club of America [G2]) here. We are in good shape, and she runs well fresh.”

‘A Nice, Smooth Half Mile’: Breeders’ Cup Classic Hopeful Epicenter Breezes At Keeneland

Racing Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen worked three of his Breeders' Cup pre-entrants Sunday morning at Keeneland, including Winchell Thoroughbreds' Classic (G1) hopeful Epicenter.

With Wilson Fabian aboard, Epicenter worked a half-mile in :50.80.

“Epicenter worked a nice, smooth half mile,” Asmussen said of the Runhappy Travers (G1) winner. “I am extremely pleased with how he is coming into the Classic.”

Working before Epicenter was Three Chimneys Farm's Grand Love, who worked a half-mile in :50.20 with fractions of :13, :26, and :50.20 with Carmen Rosas aboard. Grand Love is pre-entered in the NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Following Epicenter's work, Rosas returned with Peter Blum Thoroughbreds' Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) hopeful Society. She worked a half-mile in :49.60 after a first quarter mile in :25.

“The track is in excellent shape, and it was a typical week of work for us,” Asmussen said. “I am extremely happy with who we have and the shape they are in.”

Expected to work Monday for Asmussen are Jackie's Warrior (Qatar Racing Sprint [G1]), Clairiere (Distaff [G1]), Gunite (Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile [G1]), and Wicked Halo (Filly and Mare Sprint [G1]).
