Meditate Leaves No One To Wonder In Decisive Juvenile Fillies Turf Win

The Irish filly Meditate may have been the favorite coming into the Grade 1 Juvenile Fillies turf, and she may have been the winner, but it certainly wasn't easy.

The Aiden O'Brien trainee, piloted by Ryan Moore came out of the gate and drifted slightly left, knocking hard into rival Delight and Luis Saez and shuffling her well away from her preferred front-running spot. Moore and Meditate were forced to settle well back in tight with her competition, off a pace set by Spirit Gal, who was fighting pilot Ricardo Santana Jr. for much of the backstretch.

Moore sat off the rail with Pleasant Passage to their inside and began making their move well ahead of entering the final turn, with no choice but to swing out five wide on the turn and begin driving. Once she found open ground, Meditate covered the final quarter on firm turf in :22.74 with ears pricked at the finish, ahead of Pleasant Passage by 2 1/2 lengths at the wire.

“It's obviously always very hard coming here,” said Moore afterward. “Everything needs to go right. No one comes here to get beat. The filly did it very easy and has lots of talent. She hasn't run a bad race all year and gets better with every race. She started well, went hard for a little bit, I was going to be wide and the pace got steady. I followed a horse down the backside and she picked up really well down the stretch. She had them covered with a furlong out and in front pricking her ears. She was much the best.”

Cairo Consort was third, followed by Midnight Mile.

Meditate paid $6.08 to win.

Moore and O'Brien are no strangers to success in the Breeders' Cup. The race marked the 14th Breeders' Cup win for O'Brien, though his first in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. The victory is the tenth Breeders' Cup win for Moore.

Meditate came to the Breeders' Cup off a second in the G1 Cheveley Park at Newmarket, which O'Brien said in hindsight was perhaps too quick a follow-up to her second in the G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh. She also has wins in the G2 Alpha Centauri Debuante, G3 Albany and G3 Naas Sprint to her credit.

“We had a reason (she didn't win) at the Curragh and a reason for her last race and weren't sure about the mile,” said O'Brien.  “Ryan (Moore) gave her a brilliant ride. Michael (Tabor) was very confident that this was the race for her. It's incredible. We came to here to see if she would be a filly for the Guineas. And I heard Michael telling Ryan before the race, if she wasn't going to get the trip here, we might not train her for the Guineas. Obviously, the result was great. Ryan was very patient. He didn't have an easy draw and said he had to take his time the first half. Delighted for everyone.”

The one-mile turf contest is the farthest Meditate had been, and O'Brien said her pedigree (by No Nay Never out of Dalakhani mare Pembina) suggested she could stretch out longer.

Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Westerberg (Michael Kuessner) are the owners, and the breeders are Lynch-Bages & Rhinestone Bloodstock. The owners purchased Meditate for $424,619 as a yearling at the Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, where she was consigned by Capucines and bought by Jamie McCalmont.

The final time for the mile was 1:35.38.

No Nay Never’s Meditate Dominates BC Juvenile Fillies Turf

LEXINGTON, KY–Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) scored the first of two victories for the Coolmore team, Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore Friday, charging home to a decisive score in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Favored at 2-1, Meditate bounded away from the stalls to establish position, settling in the three path near the back of the pack as 18-1 shot Spirit Gal (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) carved out an opening quarter in :23.19 and a half in :47.60. Meditate crept up a bit on the outside to sit mid-pack while turning for home four wide. Kicking into high gear at the top of the stretch, the bay unleashed a powerful turn of foot, rolling clear with ease to win by 2 1/2 lengths. The Shug McGaughey-trained Pleasant Passage (More Than Ready) was the runner-up with Cairo Consort (Cairo Prince) in third.

“We had a reason (she didn't win) at the Curragh and a reason for her last race and weren't sure about the mile,” said O'Brien, who teamed up with Moore and Coolmore to take the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf two races later.

“It's obviously always very hard coming here,” Moore said.

As for the runner-up, McGaughey said, “I thought she ran great. She missed the break just a tad, but I loved her position back there. When the winner moved, we sort of had to wait a little bit. When she got clear in the stretch I thought she finished really well.”

A good-looking debut winner at the Curragh in April, Meditate reeled off three more wins after that, taking the G3 Naas Fillies Sprint S. May 15, Royal Ascot's G3 Albany S. June 17 and the Curragh's G2 Debutante S. Aug. 20. Her hot streak came to an end Sept. 11 when she finished second in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and she completed the exacta again last time in Newmarket's G1 Cheveley Park S. Sept. 24

Pedigree Notes:

No Nay Never came up just a half-length short when second as the favorite in the 2014 GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, but the Coolmore stallion had a win on the 2022 championship card with his daughter Meditate. The filly is one of 26 group/graded winners for her sire, whose monster results this year include multiple Group 1-winning juvenile Blackbeard and Group 1-winning 2-year-old Little Big Bear.

Pembina is a half-sister to the dam of Group and Grade I winner Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}). Meditate is her most recent foal. —Jessica Martini

Wonder Wheel Kicks Clear In Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies

Just under a month after her showcase front-running victory in the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland, Wonder Wheel showed off a new trick at the same track on Friday, rallying from a ground-saving trip to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

The daughter of Into Mischief veered out shortly after the break, to stay clear of And Tell Me Nolies, was also angling out next to her. Post time favorite Chop Chop was also knocked widest of all in the exchange, which affected her for the rest of her trip.

This left Wonder Wheel near the back of the pack heading into the first turn while Grand Love and Leave No Trace led the way.

Grand Love entered the backstretch after setting an opening quarter-mile in :22.90, while jockey Tyler Gaffalione settled Wonder Wheel back in on the rail, ahead of just two horses. Under an easy handle by jockey Florent Geroux, Grand Love gained some slight separation from chasers Leave No Trace and You're My Girl, and covered a half-mile in :47.22.

Longshot Leave No Trace began applying pressure to leader Grand Love at the three-quarter mark, crossing the pole in 1:12.80, and the rest of the field began closing in on the leaders through the final turn.

This left an opening on the rail for Gaffalione to accelerate with Wonder Wheel, and the duo picked up several placings through the bend. By the quarter pole, Wonder Wheel was directly behind Grand Love, who was still battling with Leave No Trace to stay in front.

Gaffalione swung Wonder Wheel out three-wide, and slipped through a narrow hole to find daylight in the stretch, and she was even with the leaders with a sixteenth of a mile to go, setting the mile time in 1:38.63. With all of the momentum behind her, Wonder Wheel kicked away to win by three lengths. Leave No Trace carried on to finish second, one length ahead of third-place Raging Sea, who staged a late move from the rail.

Pacesetter Grand Love faded to sixth, and favorite Chop Chop was never in contention and finished last of 13.

Wonder Wheel completed the 1 1/16 mile race in 1:44.90 over a fast main track for owner D. J. Stable and trainer Mark Casse. She paid $15 to win.

Friday's race improved Wonder Wheel's lifetime record to four wins in five career starts.

Wonder Wheel was bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm and Clearsky Farms, out of the multiple Grade 1-placed Tiz Wonderful mare Wonder Gal, who herself finished third in the 2014 running of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita Park.

Wonder Wheel Slices her Way to Juvenile Fillies Win

LEXINGTON, KY – D J Stable's Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief) was masterfully handled from far back beneath Tyler Gaffalione and produced a devastating stretch run to secure a year-end divisional championship in Friday's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland. Leave No Trace (Outwork) was three lengths back in second; Raging Sea (Curlin) finished third.

“There was lots of doubt probably the entire race given the way she has run in the past,” said winning trainer Mark Casse after registering his sixth Breeders' Cup victory. “She is just a really good horse. She is just special and now she is going to be champion.”

In a stark contrast to her narrow, wire-to-wire tally in her route debut in the local GI Darley Alcibiades S., the 6-1 chance quite surprisingly found herself far back in 11th through fractions of :22.90 and :47.22. Traveling beautifully on the inside on the far turn, but desperately in the need of some racing luck, Gaffalione kept his cool and tipped Wonder Wheel out three deep through a tight opening as they straightened. She put on a show from there to leave them all in the dust.

Wonder Wheel, a winner of her first two starts at Churchill Downs, including a runaway score in the Debutante S., was second behind the 25-1 Juvenile Fillies runner-up Leave No Trace in Saratoga's GI Spinaway S. Wonder Wheel held on by a nose over the unlucky Chop Chop (City of Light) after setting the pace in the Alcibiades. Juvenile Fillies third Raging Sea was disqualified from third for interference that day and placed fourth.

Gaffalione, the regular rider of the Casse-trained GI Preakness S. winner War of Will (War Front), entered this year's Championships with an 0-for-34 record.

“She didn't break very well,” Gaffalione said. “I got pushed back a little further than I wanted to be. But when she broke her maiden, she took dirt and went in between horses and I wasn't too concerned [today]. Spots kept opening up inside, so I just going forward and it just worked out.”

Chop Chop was last of 13 as the 2-1 favorite.

“Didn't work out very well,” trainer Brad Cox said. “She broke, she was fine. She was a little hot in the paddock for me. I didn't love that. She got pushed wide going into the first turn. She got pushed wide actually by the winner. The winner was ultra-impressive. We just didn't have much horse.”

The Green family's D J Stable, along with Cash is King, campaigned 2018 Juvenile Fillies winner and that season's champion 2-year-old filly Jaywalk (Cross Traffic).

“It's an incredible feeling, not only to win a race of this caliber at Keeneland, but to do it with these classy gentlemen,” D J Stable's Jon Green said. “Tyler's been phenomenal for us over the past couple of years, Mark has been training for us for three years now, and we've been in the Breeders' Cup every year.

Green continued, “Jaywalk won it, again, similar situation, she was third choice, kind of overlooked by a lot of people, which is fine by us; we like being the underdog, we're used to it, quite frankly.”

As for Wonder Wheel, Green concluded, “She's a classy filly. She never misses a day of training and she's got a great level head. But you still worry about asking a horse at this level to do something completely new. And that's why we employ somebody like Tyler because he just navigated her right to the rail and through an open hole and the rest is history.”

Pedigree Notes:

Wonder Wheel joins Into Mischief's rapidly growing all-star line-up of Breeders' Cup winners Authentic, Covfefe, Gamine, Life Is Good and Goldencents (2x). The $275,000 KEESEP yearling was already one of 13 Grade I winners for her all-conquering sire. Wonder Wheel's talented multiple stakes-winning dam Wonder Gal, a close third in the 2014 Juvenile Fillies, was barren on a 2022 Constitution cover. Wonder Wheel is her most recent produce. This is the extended female family of GISWs Force the Pass and Perfect Drift.
