Win And You’re In: Triple Time Posts 33-1 Shocker In Royal Ascot’s Queen Anne Stakes

Triple Time made a sensational debut at G1 level by causing a 33/1 shock in Royal Ascot's opening day Queen Anne Stakes for Kevin Ryan and Neil Callan. Making his first start of the campaign after being forced to miss the Lockinge Stakes, Triple Time was always to the fore in a steadily-run contest.

The Frankel colt led with two furlongs remaining and was soon challenged by Inspiral under Frankie Dettori. Inspiral looked the more likely winner entering the final furlong but her effort flattened out close home, with Triple Time running on gamely to prevail by a neck.

Light Infantry (14/1) finished two and a half lengths back in third, just ahead of 7/4 favorite Modern Games, who could never land a blow.

It was a third Royal Ascot winner for Triple Time's dam Reem Three, following 2018 Britannia winner Ostilio and 2019 Wokingham victor Cape Byron, also for owner-breeder Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum.

The victory earned Triple Time an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Mile this fall at Santa Anita Park, courtesy of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

Ryan said: “Triple Time was in great shape coming into the race. We've always had great faith in the horse; Sheikh Mohammed Obaid has been very patient. Unfortunately, he got a bit of stomach cramp just before the Lockinge and we had to take him out, and he's only had one ordinary run; that was in France in October on deep ground. Now hopefully we will have a full season with him, and he's got his Group One, which is great.

“I am delighted for all my team, and my family. Umar, who looks after him, has done a magnificent job, and Sheikh Mohammed Obaid has been a big, big supporter of ours. He's so patient, and I'm delighted to have a big one for him, especially here.

“Triple Time is up there with the best I've had – he's very good. He's not a keen horse but he's got a massive stride, and he's not the type of horse you can break that stride. He's very tough. We knew we had him as good as we could get him without a run and it's paid off.

Reflecting on his late withdrawal at Newbury, Ryan said: “He was alright within half an hour at Newbury – the vets didn't take any chances and took him to the hospital. In case it was proper colic the vet had to give him a sedative straightaway, which was absolutely the right thing to do. Horses give you grey hairs sometimes!

“We've still got some very important horses to run, but it's lovely to get it on the first day and we can enjoy the rest of the week. It shows the wellbeing of the horses, as well, which is always a good sign.”

Callan said: “I am speechless for once and a bit emotional as well. The one thing Kevin has always said is that this is the best horse he has ever trained. That's quite a big call to make, because he's had a lot of good horses, but he believed in this horse. And Umar, who rides him every day, said to me going out of the chute, just ride him like his dad [Frankel].

“He wasn't really keen today, he's just a bit sensitive in his mouth. He was throwing his head up a bit. The more rein I was giving him, the more he was racing on his own because I didn't anticipate them going like that, so I just stayed on my own and let him relax. Once he relaxed into his rhythm, we went over and joined them for a bit of company. When I got to the two-and-a-half, I let him roll and I really thought it was going to have to be a good one to get past him, because he was fighting to the line for me.

“I am obviously very happy. I wear my heart on my sleeve. It's just me, the way I am. But look at this [gesturing to the crowd] – it's just amazing. When I came back from riding in Hong Kong, I didn't really know what to expect. I rode very competitively there, as I did here before I left. But you are not guaranteed anything in this game and you have to work for what you get. I was lucky that when I came back Kevin Ryan gave me some support.”

John Gosden said of Inspiral: “She switched off and did everything right. She just hit the front and the other one came back, but they are two very nice ones and there's a lot of nice horses behind them. We would look at races like the Sussex or the Jacques Le Marois that she won in Deauville last year, but she's back on song – that's the main thing.”

When asked if she has a habit of starting slowly, Gosden added: “A little bit, but that's her style – she doesn't want to break on the lead, she's not one of those. But she did everything right, came to win her race, got in front and just got caught on the line. But a very nice run for the first run back this year. She will come on for the race again, it's not often you come to a Group One and say they'll come on for the race. She's back to her best and ran a lovely race, I couldn't be more pleased with her.”

Hernandez, D’Amato, Reddam Among Hollywood Meet Leaders

Juan Hernandez, Phil D'Amato and Paul and Zillah Reddam's Reddam Racing emerged as the leaders in the jockey, trainer and owner divisions, respectively, during Santa Anita's Hollywood Meet, which concluded a 28-day run at the Los Angeles area oval Sunday, June 18.

With a Sunday three-timer, emerging talent Hernandez continued his stranglehold on the Southern California jockeys' premiership, as he booted home 42 winners during the meeting. Hernandez, whose closing-day victories included the ride aboard new 'TDN Rising Star' Muth (Good Magic), saluted in 10 added-money events, five more than Hector Berrios.

D'Amato sent out 17 winners at the Hollywood Meet, besting Doug O'Neill (15) and Mark Glatt (14). D'Amato was also the leading conditioner during the Classic meeting at the track and is now the owner of five Santa Anita training titles overall. His five stakes victories were one better than Richard Mandella and Bob Baffert.

Reddam Racing runners posted seven wins from 38 starters–two better than Hronis Racing LLC.

“We certainly want to thank our horseplayers, owners, trainers, jockeys, backstretch workers and the thousands of people that help us put on the show that is live racing,” said Santa Anita Senior Vice President and General Manager Nate Newby. “We are extremely proud of our safety record this year and we want to acknowledge this progress is the result of a true team effort from all stakeholders.”

With the winter and spring meetings in the books, officials at Santa Anita turn their attention to the fall and the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which pay another visit to Arcadia this coming November.

“Looking ahead to the fall, it is indeed a great honor to be able to host the Breeders' Cup for an 11th time and preparations will begin tomorrow,” said Newby. “We'll be offering our on-track fans a number of improvements, including a pair of brand new high resolution big screen televisions in the paddock which among many other things, will help to ensure the Great Race Place continues to look spectacular.”

Racing returns to Santa Anita Friday, Sept. 29.

Raptor’s Surges To Victory In ‘Win And You’re In’ Grand Premio Brasil, Earns BC Turf Berth

Haras Do Morro's 3-year-old homebred Raptor's split horses at the top of the stretch and surged to the front in the final quarter-mile to win Sunday's 91st Grande Premio Brasil (G1) at Hipodromo da Gavea in Rio de Janeiro by a length.

With this victory, Raptor's earned an automatic starting position into the $4-million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) via the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In.

Raptor's, a son of Hat Trick out of the Wild Event mare Eurotrip, is trained by Luis Esteves and was ridden by Joao Moreira. Raptor's joins The Punisher, winner of the Gran Premio Internacional Carlos Pellegrini (G1), as the first horses this year to earn free starting positions into the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf.

Raptor's, the 5-1 favorite, finished in front of stablemate Online, who was disqualified for interference entering the stretch and was placed 16th following a stewards' inquiry. Escher, who crossed the line in third was moved up to second place, followed by Olympic Kremlin in third.

Raptor's, who won the Cruzeiro do Sul (G1) (Brazilian Derby) in his previous start at Gavea, completed the 1 ½ miles in 2:24.91 over a course listed as soft. He improved his record to four wins in seven starts. It was also the sixth time that Esteves has saddled the winner of the Grande Premio Brasil.

Breaking from post 8 in a 16-horse field, Raptor's settled around 10th place during the first seven furlongs, while longshot Lionel the Best set the pace followed by Limeira and Jorel. Approaching the far turn, Moreira found room along the rail and forged Raptor's through a gap between Limeira and Jorel and into the lead. Online, the 6-1 second choice, forced horses wide at the top of the stretch and chased Raptor's to the wire in second. Escher closed ground in deep stretch to finish third and was moved up to second following the disqualification of Online.

Now in its 16th season, the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 80 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race at the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held Nov. 3-4 at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

As a part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for Raptor's to start in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf, which will be run at 1 1/2 miles at Santa Anita Park. Breeders' Cup will also provide a travel allowance for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the pre-entry deadline of Oct. 23 to receive the rewards.

Royal Ascot: Modern Games, Highfield Princess Headline Breeders’ Cup Qualifiers Opening Day

The first races of the 2023 Breeders' Cup Challenge Series to be run in Europe will be staged next week in Great Britain when the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting opens Tuesday at Ascot Racecourse. Four contests during the premier week of racing offer guaranteed starts to the Breeders' Cup World Championships via the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 80 stakes races whose winners receive automatic qualifying positions, with fees paid, into a corresponding race at the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held Nov. 3-4 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.

The first card of the five-day meeting features two Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races: the Queen Anne Stakes (G1) at a mile, an automatic qualifier for the $2-million FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1), and the King's Stand Stakes (G1) going five furlongs, which offers a free berth into the $1-million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1).

Breeders' Cup Winner Modern Games Heads Queen Anne

The Queen Anne Stakes features a horse familiar to Breeders' Cup fans in Godolphin's Irish-bred Modern Games, the two-time Breeders' Cup winner who captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Del Mar in 2021 and the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland last year.

He had been unbeaten in three starts in North America until a surprising defeat in the April 14 Maker's Mark Mile (G1) at Keeneland, only to atone by winning the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes (G1) at Newbury in May to record his first top level victory in Britain, and fifth in all.

His 1 1/2-length score was achieved despite runner-up Chindit, who is set to line up against Modern Games again, cutting jockey William Buick's hand while attempting to bite his rival.

Modern Games will be joined in the race by Godolphin's Native Trail, winner of the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas (G1) last year.

“Modern Games has already done it this year by winning a group one, and I'm a strong believer Native Trail won't be too far behind him in getting his group one this year,” said trainer Charlie Appleby. “Native Trail had wind surgery over the winter and he has definitely come forward for his first run of the season.”

Frankie Dettori, appearing at Royal Ascot for the final time before his planned retirement at the end of the season, will provide one of the narratives of the week. Winner of 77 Royal Ascot races, the most of any active jockey, Dettori will partner Cheveley Park Stud's 4-year-old filly Inspiral on her seasonal debut.

Co-trained by John and Thady Gosden, Inspiral returns to the track where she beat Spendarella first time out in the Coronation Stakes (G1) 12 months ago.

“Inspiral has taken her time to come to hand due to a cold, wet spring,” said John Gosden. “Last year we were just taking on three-year-old fillies. This year we are taking on proven older horses like the Breeders' Cup Mile winner, so it is a much bigger test. I've been very pleased with her lately.”

International Rivals Square Off In King's Stand

The King's Stand Stakes is an international affair, with sprinters from Australia and the United States joining the field.

The leading British contender is Trainers House Enterprises Ltd's Highfield Princess, who plundered the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) at York, Arc Prix Maurice de Gheest (G1) at Deauville, and Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Flying Five (G1) at The Curragh over a 35-day winning spree last summer.

She finished fourth behind Caravel in the 2022 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) and was second on her comeback in the 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stakes (G2) in May.

Trainer John Quinn said: “She is a tough, durable mare who has been great for us. It's a spicy King's Stand and we're hoping for a big run.”

J. O'Neill, A Kheir, and Coolangatta Partnership's Australian-bred Coolangatta, another female sprinter, will attempt to extend the impressive record of winners of the Black Caviar Lightning (G1), which she captured in February.

Australian-breds Choisir, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti, Scenic Blast, Black Caviar, and Nature Strip all won the King's Stand Stakes after winning the Flemington feature.

“Winning the Lightning Stakes down the straight at Flemington gives you some confidence about handling the track here,” said Ciaron Maher, who trains Coolangatta with David Eustace.

“Coolangatta is good fresh and, even after her win in the Lightning Stakes, I still feel she is a filly that is developing.”

James Harron Bloodstock Colts Partnership's Cannonball (AUS) had his first start at the top level when third in the Kia Ora Galaxy (G1) at Rosehill in March.

“He is an inexperienced horse but, in his two starts for me, he has shown that he is well above average,” said Peter Snowden, who trains the colt with son Paul. “He is a fast horse, he is a tough horse, and he has handled this trip over like it is nothing.”

Wesley Ward, who won the King's Stand in 2017 with Lady Aurelia, is set to start Stonestreet Stables LLC's Twilight Gleaming, the 2021 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) winner, back at the track where she finished second in the 2021 Queen Mary Stakes (G2). Irad Ortiz Jr. takes the mount.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the winner of Queen Anne to start in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1), and the winner of the King's Stand to start in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run at 5 furlongs at Santa Anita Park. Breeders' Cup also will provide a $40,000 travel allowance for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winners must be nominated by the pre-entry deadline of Oct. 23 to receive the rewards.
