Friday’s Speakeasy At Santa Anita To Offer Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Slot

An impressive first-out winner on dirt, Richard Mandella's Forbidden Kingdom merits top billing on grass in Friday's $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes at Santa Anita which has attracted a field of seven juveniles, including three fillies.  To be contested at five furlongs on turf, the Speakeasy is a Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” Challenge Race qualifier to the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

A chestnut colt by American Pharoah, out of the Five Star Day mare Just Louise, Forbidden Kingdom was purchased for $300,000 out of the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Selected Yearlings Showcase Sale and is owned by MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm, LLC.  With a solid 79 Beyer Speed Figure in-hand, Forbidden Kingdom will hope to act on turf as well with Juan Hernandez back in the saddle.

A Chicago mainstay, jockey E.T. Baird will be back aboard the speedy One Timer, who is trained by Larry Rivelli and will be making his Southern California debut.  A Kentucky-bred gelding by Trappe Shot, One Timer comes off a pair of impressive sprint wins over synthetic surfaces.  A first-out 12 ½ length open maiden winner going five furlongs at Arlington Park June 26, One Timer, who is owned by Richard Raven and Patricia's Hope, LLC, then sped to a 3 ¾ length score in an ungraded stakes going 5 ½ furlongs at Woodbine July 31.

With five Arlington Park works over synthetic since winning in Canada, One Timer, who has registered Beyer Speed figs of 80 in both of his starts, can be expected to handle turf and if so, rates a big chance in a race that could set him up for Breeders' Cup stardom.

Owner Gary Barber's Time to Party, a chestnut gelding by Kantharos, comes off a 1 ½ length maiden win going five furlongs on turf as the 3-5 favorite on Sept. 2 and figures to attract ample pari-mutuel attention.  Trained by Peter Miller, Time to Party has shown plenty of speed in two starts, his first a narrow second place finish under the same conditions Aug. 1.

With Flavien Prat back aboard, Time to Party, who was purchased for a modest $72,000 at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sale Company Winter Mixed Sale, is based at San Luis Rey Downs and will hope to step forward for his high percentage connections on Friday.

Of the three fillies entered, Wesley Ward's turf stakes winning Miss Alacrity rates the best chance in what will be her third start.  A New York-bred by Munnings, she was a 10 length first-out winner versus statebreds going five furlongs on dirt at Belmont Park May 20 and came back at even money to drill open fillies going five furlongs on turf in an ungraded stakes Aug. 1 at Monmouth Park.  She'll be ridden by John Velazquez, who was aboard for the maiden win.

The remaining fillies are the Bob Hess, Jr. conditioned Blame It On Rose, a maiden $32,000 claiming winner two starts back who then took a first condition allowance going six furlongs on dirt Aug. 28 at Del Mar and Rock the Belles, a $2,000 supplemental entrant.  Trained by Luis Mendez, Rock the Belles was an impressive first-out maiden $150,000 claiming winner versus fillies Aug. 14 and was then well beaten in the Grade I Del Mar Debutante Sept. 5.

It’s Godolphin–Again–In the Summer S.

Off at a skinny 65 cents on the dollar, unsurprising given the incredible success of his stablemates over the weekend, ALBAHR (GB) (g, 2, Dubawi {Ire}–Falls of Lora {Ire}, by Street Cry {Ire}) bombed the break in a way similar to the way Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}) did in the Natalma S., and similar to that one, overcame that trouble to post a cozy victory in the GI Summer S. at Woodbine. The win earns Albahr an all-fees-paid berth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar Nov. 5. Winner of three straight at home, including the Listed Stonehenge S. at Salisbury Aug. 20, Albahr stood there for a second, spotting his rivals several lengths, and was more quietly ridden towards the back of the pack for the opening half-mile. Given his cue three furlongs from home the chestnut accelerated on the swing for home, was produced four deep into the straight and raced a bit greenly through the final stages, but was far too good. Grafton Street (War Front), a maiden trying the turf in his second career start, finished willingly for second ahead of longshot Godolphin's U.S.-based Degree of Risk (Cairo Prince).

Godolphin Express Continues in Natalma

Godolphin's Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}) became the first North American top-level winner for her superstar Banstead Manor-based stallion, overcoming an eventful start before storming home through the final furlong to prove much-the-best in the GI Natalma S. Sunday at Woodbine. With the victory, Wild Beauty earns herself a spot in the field for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar Nov. 5.

After sharing favoritism with Saratoga raider and chief market Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) for the bulk of the wagering, Wild Beauty tightened into 7-5 favoritism, but looked to have it all to do early on, as she first hit the left side of the gate, then was pinballed around between Royal Engagement (Palace Malice) to her inside and Baksheesh (Summer Front) to her outside, relegating her to a clear last. Asked to improve her position by Frankie Dettori after the opening quarter mile, Wild Beauty found a midfield position passing the four-furlong pole and was put to a drive five-sixteenths of a mile from home. Swung out five or six wide into the long Woodbine straight, she gobbled up the ground to lead approaching the furlong marker and kicked home to score impressively. Pizza Bianca, the 3-1 second pick, sat a midfield trip and was stymied for a run with a furlong and a half to travel, then ran on gamely once clear to be second. Eminent Victor (Mr. Z) rallied from second-last into the lane and closed well for third in her first start for Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group and Louis Lazzinaro and trainer Chad Brown.

Wild Beauty followed the same path to Woodbine as did 2018 Natalma winner La Pelosa (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}). Whereas La Pelosa finished third in the Listed Star S. at Goodwood, Wild Beauty went one better in that July 22 test, chasing home hot favorite Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who subsequently cruised at long odds-on in Doncaster's G2 May Hill S. Sept. 9. Wild Beauty and La Pelosa both finished runner-up in the G3 Sweet Solera S. contested over a straight seven furlongs at Newmarket before making the trans-Atlantic journey.

Pedigree Notes:

Wild Beauty is the 19th worldwide Group 1/Grade I winner for Frankel, who has sired top-level winners now in eight countries (England, Japan, Australia, France, Ireland, UAE and Germany). She is the 25th G1/GISW out of a daughter of Cheveley Park's legendary Pivotal (GB), four of which are by Frankel (Cracksman {GB}, Hungry Heart {Aus}, Veracious {GB}).

A half-sister to 2019 G3 UAE Oaks third Swift Rose (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Wild Beauty is a maternal great-granddaughter of multiple Group 1-winning sprinter Cherokee rose, whose six winners from 10 to race include not only GSW and G1SP Bowman (Irish River {Fr}), but also the dam of Godolphin's outstanding MG1SW highweighted stayer Mastery (GB) (Sulamani {Ire}) and G1SW Kirklees (Ire) (Jade Robbery). Tulips is the dam of a full-sister to Wild Beauty foaled Feb. 28 of this year.
