Kelso Winner Complexity, First Lady Winner Uni Will Prepare For Breeders’ Cup Engagements In New York

Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown won a pair of graded races on Saturday taking the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park with Breeders' Cup-bound Complexity and the Grade 1 First Lady at Keeneland with reigning Champion Turf Female Uni.

Owned by Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables, Complexity earned a career-best 110 Beyer for his prominent score in the one-turn mile Kelso in which he got the jump on multiple Grade 1-winner Code of Honor, who had to settle for second.

Brown said Complexity will now point to the two-turn Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, although he will also nominate the 4-year-old Maclean's Music colt to the six-furlong Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint.

“He ran super yesterday,” said Brown. “I'm pointing him towards the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. I think six furlongs might be a little quick for him, but I'll keep him eligible for both races.”

A five-time winner from nine starts, Complexity captured the 2018 Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont and was runner-up in the Grade 1 Forego on August 29 contested during a rainstorm over a sloppy and sealed Saratoga main track.

Michael Dubb, Head of Plains Partners, Robert LaPenta and Bethlehem Stables' Uni earned a 99 Beyer in her successful title defense in the Grade 1 First Lady at Keeneland. The 6-year-old More Than Ready chestnut overtook stablemate Newspaperofrecord in deep stretch to secure her fourth career Grade 1 win with a one-length score over Beau Recall, who nosed out Newspaperofrecord for place.

Brown said Uni will return to Belmont to prepare to defend her title in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile against the boys on Nov. 7 at Keeneland.

“Uni ran really well and we'll bring her back here to train up to the final start of her career in the Breeders' Cup Mile,” said Brown. “Hopefully, she can defend her title.”

Klaravich Stables' Newspaperofrecord, who captured the 2018 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, has enjoyed a productive 4-year-old campaign with wins in the Grade 3 Intercontinental on June 6 and the Grade 1 Longines Just a Game on June 27, both at Belmont.

Brown said the Irish-bred daughter of Lope de Vega could target the Grade 1 Matriarch, a one-mile turf test on November 29 at Del Mar.

“Newspaper will come back here and I'll talk to Seth Klarman about if we want to run her one more time or not this year,” said Brown. “If we do, it would be in the Matriarch. We could just rest her.”

Brown said Newspaperofrecord is likely to return to the races as a 5-year-old.

“I would say probably if she is in good health we'd like to run her another year,” said Brown.

Brown breezed a number of upcoming stakes starters on the Belmont inner turf on Sunday morning, including the Peter Brant-owned 2018 Champion Turf Female Sistercharlie, who went five-eighths in 1:02.88.

The breeze took place less than an hour before the Brant-owned Sottsass, Sistercharlie's 4-year-old half-brother by Siyouni, captured the prestigious Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Sottsass is trained by Jean-Claude Rouget.

“I'm so happy for Peter,” said Brown. “It's a race he's wanted to win for a long time. He kept him over there this year to point for that race and I'm so happy that it worked out. It's an incredible family.”

Both Sistercharlie, a seven-time Grade 1-winner, and Sottsass are out of the Galileo mare Starlet's Sister, who also produced the Group/Graded winner My Sister Nat, a 5-year-old Acclamation mare who captured the Grade 3 Waya in August for Brown and Brant.

Sistercharlie, who ran third in both the Grade 2 Ballston Spa and Grade 1 Diana this summer at Saratoga, will look to secure the first win of her 6-year-old campaign in Saturday's 10-furlong Grade 1, $250,000 Flower Bowl which offers a berth in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf in November at Keeneland.

“The breeze went good,” said Brown. “She's running back into form. Her last race was an acceptable one. She got a late start this year but I think she'll run well.”

Sistercharlie is likely to square off with stablemates Cambier Parc and Nay Lady Nay in the Flower Bowl.

OXO Equine's multiple Grade 1-winner Cambier Parc worked five furlongs in 1:01.40 Sunday on the Belmont inner turf.

“She breezed good. She'll run in Flower Bowl,” said Brown.

The Medaglia d'Oro bay, out of Canada's 2007 Horse of the Year Sealy Hill, captured the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks and Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup last year in a sophomore campaign that also included wins in the Grade 3 Wonder Again at Belmont and the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride at Gulfstream Park.

First Row Partners and Hidden Brook Farm's Irish-bred Nay Lady Nay, a multiple graded-stakes winning 4-year-old daughter of No Nay Never worked a half-mile in 49 flat on Saturday on the Monmouth Park main track.

Nay Lady Nay made the grade last year in the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere at Churchill Downs and on July 18 added the Grade 3 Matchmaker at Monmouth to her ledger.

Heavily Favored Mo Forza Rolls To Another Victory In City Of Hope Mile Stakes

Heavily favored and on his way. That pretty much sums up the performance tendered by Mo Forza in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 City of Hope Mile at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., as the 4-year-old son of Uncle Mo rallied from off the pace to win by 1 3/4 lengths while in-hand under Flavien Prat. Trained by Peter Miller, Mo Forza got a mile on turf in 1:32.09 and he and his connections now eye an engagement in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

Breaking alertly from the outside in a field of seven, Mo Forza rated kindly and settled into a fluid rhythm down the backside, about five lengths off pacesetting Blitzkrieg with a half mile to run. Three-deep turning for home, he was hand ridden while lugging in a bit through the lane and won with consummate ease over multiple graded stakes winner Sharp Samurai.

“He pretty much had the same trip as he did in the Del Mar Mile (G2, Aug. 23),” said Prat. “I think he's getting more professional, which is great. Today he showed up again. We can probably go further, but as of right now, he's running pretty well, so I wouldn't change anything.”

A 4 1/4-length winner of the Del Mar Mile Handicap on turf, Mo Forza was off as the 3-5 favorite and paid $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10.

“That's him,” said Ruben Alvarado, assistant to Miller. “He relaxes early and then you saw the way he finished up. He ran today just like he did at Del Mar. We're very happy and we're looking forward to the Breeders' Cup.

Bred in Kentucky by former trainer Barry Abrams' Bardy Farm and owned by Bardy Farm and OG Boss, Mo Forza, who is out of the Unusual Heat mare Inflamed, notched his fifth graded stakes win and he has now won five out of his last six races with four of them over the Santa Anita turf. With six wins from 12 overall starts, he's four for five at one mile on grass and with the winner's share of $120,000, has earnings of $734,460.

Sharp Samurai, who sat a close third behind Blitzkrieg and eventual third-place finisher Bob and Jackie, kept to his task to finish second by 1 1/4 lengths and paid $3.00 and $2.60 as the 7-2 second choice with Juan Hernandez up.

Off at 24-1 with Heriberto Figueroa, Bob and Jackie prevailed by a head over Blitzkrieg and paid $5.60 to show.

Fractions on the race were 22.58, 45.61, 1:08.76 and 1:20.53.

Mo Forza Breeders’ Cup Bound after City of Hope Win

The heavy chalk with an eye on the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile in five weeks, Mo Forza more than delivered in the GII City of Hope Mile S. As per his usual style, he wasn’t swift out of the gate, but settled confidently on the outside in fifth and had an air of controlled power as he let the race unfold. Blitzkrieg (War Front) was hustled to the lead as Bob and Jackie hounded him and Sharp Samurai threatened in third. The order remained the same as the first quarter passed in :22.58 and the half in :45.61, but the complexion of the race was clearly changing as six panels were recorded in 1:08.76. Mo Forza, under supremely confident handling, reeled in the four in front of him and slingshotted by under a hand ride. The 1 3/4-length margin belied the effortlessness of his win. The final time was just a couple of ticks off the course record.

“He pretty much had the same trip as he did in the Del Mar Mile ,” said winning rider Flavien Prat. “I think he’s getting more professional, which is great. Today he showed up again. We can probably go further, but as of right now, he’s running pretty well, so I wouldn’t change anything.”

Mo Forza was no overnight success, requiring six starts to break his maiden in 2019, which he finally did last September at a mile over this course and distance. Once he got the hang of winning, he was unstoppable for four straight starts, leapfrogging his conditions straight from the maiden to consecutive wins in the GII Qatar Twilight Derby, the GI Hollywood Derby, and the GII Mathis Brother Mile S. He rode that streak into the GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational S., his first start outside of California, but had a wide trip and finished a well-beaten ninth. Freshened for seven months, he reappeared with a vengeance in the Aug. 23 GII Del Mar Mile H., where he won for fun by 4 1/4 lengths and got a 101 Beyer Speed Figure, the best of his career.

Pedigree Notes:

Uncle Mo, currently the third-leading sire in North America by earnings, continues his stellar year with yet another graded score to his credit. The Coolmore sire has 19 individual black-type winners of 2020–second-best on the continent–to go with his 67 total stakes winners in six crops to race. Mo Forza is one of Uncle Mo’s 38 graded winners, but the first of his stakes winners out of an Unusual Heat daughter. Unusual Heat, who died at age 27 in 2017, stood his entire career in California and averaged only 44 foals a year. His daughters have produced 19 black-type winners to date. The unplaced Inflamed, a full-sister to GII La Jolla H. winner Burns and to SW & GISP Brushburn, produced Mo Forza as her first foal. She has a yearling colt by Munnings and produced a filly this year by Tapiture after selling with that one in utero for $525,000 at the Keeneland January sale. She has since been bred back to Uncle Mo for 2021.

Brazilian-Bred ‘Var’-y Impressive in Shadwell Mile

Undefeated in three Argentinian starts, including two daylight wins at Group 1 level, and competitive in stakes company in this country, Ivar (Brz) (Agnes Gold {Jpn}) settled in the latter third of the field, was ridden quietly into the final 2 1/2 furlongs by Joe Talamo and exploded through the Keeneland stretch to up-end a high-class field in Saturday’s GI Shadwell Turf Mile, locking up a spot in the gate for the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile over the same course and distance exactly five weeks down the line.

Drawn widest in a field reduced to nine by a pair of scratches–including GI Fourstardave H. winner Halladay (War Front)–Ivar was getting blinkers off for the Shadwell and settled off the rail in about seventh position passing halfway as Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) set the pace in advance of the lightly raced Born Great (Scat Daddy). Still traveling strongly around the bend, Ivar followed the move of favored ‘TDN Rising Star’ Analyze It (Point of Entry), was pulled off that one’s heels and into the clear and covered his final two furlongs in a slick :22.39 en route to a one-length success. Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) caboosed the field for the opening six panels and was home even more quickly than the winner (:22.13) while traveling 34 feet less, according to Trakus. Without Parole (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was a perfect-trip third. The final time of 1:33.99 was the fastest Shadwell Mile against the clock since the race sponsor’s Altibr (Ire) (Charnwood Forest {Ire}) covered the distance in 1:33.72 in 2000.

“We were very worried about the [outside 11] post position, but his style if you see his races in Argentina, he always comes from off the pace–way off the pace,” said winning trainer Paolo Lobo. “Today, it worked very well. I was very concerned because of the first turn. Joe [Talamo] rode him 100% magnificent.”

Winner at home of the G1 Gran Criterium and G1 Estrellas Juvenile, each by a half-dozen lengths, Ivar was a never-nearer fifth in his U.S. debut in Churchill allowance company May 21 before adding blinkers and Talamo for a coast-to-coast, two-length allowance tally June 18. He attended fractions of :44.77 and 1:07.86 when last seen in the Sept. 7 Tourist Mile at Kentucky Downs and was not disgraced in being defeated less than two lengths into third.

The sire of 31 winners from three crops in his time in Japan, Agnes Gold has since been responsible for 23 group winners in South America and seven top-level winners in addition to Ivar. The 4-year-old’s American-bred dam was a Group 2 winner in Brazil and was represented there by three winners from as many to race before being sold for $67,000 in foal to Hard Spun at Keeneland November in 2017. That produce, a colt named Hard Strike that cost $75,000 as a FTKJUL yearling last year, is campaigned by Walking L Thoroughbreds and Ken McPeek and was a maiden winner at first asking going a mile over the Ellis Park turf course July 4. May Be Now, closely related to GISW Al’s Gal (English Channel) and his SW/GSP full-sister Ann of the Dance, is also the dam of a yearling filly by Cupid and a filly foal by Hard Spun and was among the first book of mares bred to dual-surface GISW Yoshida (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}), like Agnes Gold a paternal grandson of the legendary Sunday Silence. The cross of Sunday Silence over Smart Strike mares is also responsible for GSWs Bright Thought (Hat Trick {Jpn}) and Epos (Jpn) (Just a Way {Jpn}).
