Art Collector Headlines Full Slate Of BC Contenders Working At Del Mar

Bruce Lunsford's Art Collector, who figures to be one of the leading candidates for Saturday's $6 million Grade 1 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic, worked a half-mile in :48.40 Sunday morning to highlight a work tab that featured 20 pre-entrants to the World Championships slated for Friday and Saturday at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

Art Collector was one of three horses to work for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. Neil Poznansky was aboard the trio that included Casa Creed (Mile) going 4f in :47.60 and War Like Goddess (Filly & Mare Turf) going a half-mile in :48.20.

“They were all useful works, nothing blazing fast,” said Mott, who has won 10 Breeders' Cup races. “I never have a problem working good grass horses on dirt and this track looks safe and very forgiving.”

Trainer Rudy Rodriguez was aboard Bella Sofia as she covered a half-mile in :48.40 in preparation for the Filly & Mare Sprint.

“She's a happy girl and she loves to just go about her business,” Rodriguez said of Bella Sofia who has won four of five career starts and features daylight victories in the Grade 1 Test and Grade 2 Gallant Bloom in her past two outings. “She handled the track well and was very comfortable on it.”

In all, 14 pre-entrants worked on the fast main track and six more were on the firm Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen worked four of his six pre-entrants headlined by probable Qatar Racing Sprint favorite Jackie's Warrior who covered 3f in :36.80. Also working half-miles for Asmussen were Clairiere (Longines Distaff) in :49.20, Echo Zulu (NetJets Juvenile Fillies) in :50.40 and Silver State (Dirt Mile) in :48.60.

Other dirt workers included C Z Rocket (Qatar Racing Sprint) going 3f in :35.80, Commander (Turf Sprint also-eligible) a half-mile in :48.80, Giant Game (TVG Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance) a half-mile in :48.60, and the Richard Mandella-trained duo of Dogtag (Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf) and Bombard (Turf Sprint also-eligible) working 5f in :58.20 and :58.40, respectively, in company.

Idol worked 5f in company in 1:02.40 but after the work trainer Richard Baltas notified Breeders' Cup officials that he did not feel Idol was 100 percent and withdrew him from the Classic.

Two other horses were withdrawn from Breeders' Cup consideration by their connections Sunday morning: Flagstaff from the Qatar Racing Sprint and Reina de Mollendo (ARG) from the Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf.

Highlighting the six pack of grass workers were two California standouts in Mo Forza and Going to Vegas.

Mo Forza, a two-time winner of the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile, worked a half-mile in :49.40 for the FanDuel Mile presented by PDJF for trainer Peter Miller. Shortly after Mo Forza finished his work, Going to Vegas worked a half-mile in :49.20 for Baltas in preparation for the Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf.

Also working on the turf were Time to Party (Juvenile Turf Sprint) going 3f in :38.20, Charmaine's Mia (Turf Sprint) going a half-mile in :50.20, Extravagant Kid (Turf Sprint) a half-mile in :49.40 in company with Zofelle (IRE), and Cairo Memories (Juvenile Fillies Turf) going 5f in 1:04.40.

‘Very Special Mare’ Got Stormy Records Final Breeze For Breeders’ Cup Mile

On a crisp, fall morning beneath the Twin Spires, $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile (Grade 1) contender Got Stormy along with $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) competitor Juju's Map logged their final works at Churchill Downs on Friday prior to the world championship event at Del Mar on Nov. 5-6.

Owned by My Racehorse Stable and Spendthrift Farm, Got Stormy had her final career breeze at 7:30 a.m. (all times Eastern) under jockey Declan Carroll. The duo cruised a half-mile in :48.60. Two hours earlier, Albaugh Family Stables' Juju's Map clipped five furlongs in :59.60 with jockey Florent Geroux in the saddle outside of stablemate Matera (five furlongs, :59.80).

Got Stormy, a multiple Grade 1-winning mare by Get Stormy, finished second in the 2019 Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita.

“We had some rain in the area but the track was really good so I decided to move her work up a day,” trainer Mark Casse's assistant David Carroll said. “Sometimes you see with older mares that they may take a step back from their younger campaigns but she has been doing great. I'm really excited the way she's coming into the Breeders' Cup. She's a very special mare to all of us.”

Got Stormy, along with about 12 other locally-based Breeders' Cup contenders, will ship to Del Mar on Monday.

Juju's Map completed her major preparation for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies for trainer Brad Cox. A recent winner of the $400,000 Alcibiades (G1) at Keeneland, Juju's Map is one of six local contenders for Cox.

“Today's work was with an older horse in Matera,” Cox said. “She's a stakes winner in her own right so she's a pretty tough workmate. 'Juju' sat just off her and maybe broke about a length behind. She was well in hand throughout the work and it was exactly what we were looking for at this stage. This filly seemed to improve a little bit since her win in the Alcibiades, which is what these horses need to do this time of year leading into the Breeders' Cup.”

Cox won the 2019 Juvenile Fillies with British Idiom but Geroux will be searching for his first victory in the race.

“She worked a really solid five furlongs and it was a really nice move being a week out from the race,” Geroux said. “She was able to stay relaxed throughout the work, which was important when you're working in company. She seems to be coming into the race in great shape.”

There are six Breeders' Cup contenders scheduled to work Saturday morning at Churchill Downs: Essential Quality (Classic), Knicks Go (Classic), Shedaresthedevil (Distaff), Rattle N Roll (Juvenile), Ready to Purrform (Juvenile Turf) and Turnerloose (Juvenile Fillies Turf).

Liam’s Map Filly Impressive in Alcibiades

Albaugh Family Stables's Juju's Map (Liam's Map) threw her hat in the ring among what appears to be a solid juvenile filly division with a powerful victory in Friday's “Win and You're In” GI Darley Alcibiades S. at Keeneland. Reined in to avoid a speed duel heading into the first bend, the rail-drawn bay sat in a clear second as Runup (Runhappy) zipped along through splits of :22.75 and :46 flat. The 2-1 favorite took over midway on the home bend, and was briefly challenged by her stablemate Matareya (Pioneerof the Nile), but opened up at will once she straightened to report home a convincing 4 1/4-length winner. Pricey maiden Distinctlypossible (Curlin) got going late to be second, with longshot and GI Spinaway S. fourth Sequist (Nyquist) rounding out the trifecta.

“She's very talented to start with, but today it was tricky because there were a couple other speed horses,” said winning rider Florent Geroux. “From the one hole, you have to use speed to your advantage, to make sure they don't cross over and slow it down too fast. So I just wanted to break ahead so if they wanted the lead they would have to work for it, and that's what they did.

“I was able to ease her back in the first turn. From there she took a nice breather with me down the backside and from there I knew she was going to be pretty tough. Turning for home I saw [Matareya] coming up and she's pretty talented too, but when I asked her down the lane she gave me another gear, the kind of effort you want to see, and hopefully she's going into the Breeders' Cup in the right way.”

Juju's Map was second at odds-on sprinting at Ellis July 25 before breaking through at the Pea Patch by 5 3/4 lengths when stretched to a mile Sept. 3.

This was trainer Brad Cox's second Alcibiades win in three years–he took it in 2019 with eventual champion 2-year-old filly British Idiom (Flashback).

“She sat close to a hot pace and was still able to finish, and I thought, 'That's what good horses do.' She broke running, Florent put her in a good position and she finished up well,” Cox said. “I'm very proud of her performance. We'll obviously talk it over with the Albaugh team, and as long as she comes out of it in good order I think we'll march on toward California [and the Nov. 5 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies]. It was a good trip last time and hopefully she can show up and run her race and be very effective.”

Liam's Map, bred by Dennis Albaugh, is now responsible for four Grade I winners and seven graded winners overall. Three of those four reached the highest level at two despite the fact that Liam's Map didn't blossom until four, when he took the GI Woodward S. and GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile locally.

Juju's Map is the 17th stakes winner (three graded including a Group 1 winner in Brazil) for Flatter as a broodmare sire. Her unplaced dam is half to GISW Fault (Blame). This is the extended female family of local Grade II winner Fioretti (Bernardini) and MGISW juvenile Bast (Uncle Mo).

Nagambie was acquired for just $14,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale. Her most recent produce was an Audible filly born Apr. 5 and she was bred back to another former Albaugh colorbearer in Not This Time for 2022.

Stakes Winner Runup Headlines Field Of 12 In Friday’s Alcibiades

A field of a dozen 2-year-old fillies, headed by Sorority winner Runup, was entered Tuesday for the 70th running of the $400,000 Darley Alcibiades (G1) that serves as the centerpiece of Friday's opening program of the Fall Meet at Keeneland.

The 1 1/16-mile main track test is a Breeders' Cup Challenge race with the winner earning a fees-paid berth into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) to be held Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

The Darley Alcibiades will go as the ninth race on Friday's 10-race program with a 5:45 p.m. ET post time. First post is 1 p.m.

Owned and bred by James McIngvale, Runup has won both of her starts on dirt highlighted by the three-length victory at Monmouth in the one-mile Sorority in her first two-turn test. Trained by Laura Wohlers, Runup will be ridden by Joseph Ramos and leave from post position 12.

Another entrant with two-turn experience is Mama Rina, runner-up in the Pocahontas (G3) last month while going 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs. Owned by the partnership of Harold Lerner, AWC Stables, Nehoc Stables, Scott Akman and Paul Braverman et al, and trained by five-time Alcibiades winner Kenny McPeek, Mama Rina will be ridden by Julien Leparoux from post position six.

Three runners coming out of Grade 1 tests are in the field: Sequist and Dream Lith, the fourth- and fifth-place finishers in the 7-furlong Spinaway Sept. 5 at Saratoga, and Myfavoritedaughter, fourth in the 7-furlong TVG Del Mar Debutante Sept. 5.

Owned by West Point Thoroughbreds, Lori Gervais, Charles Pigg, Tom Andres and Karen Kraft and trained by Dallas Stewart, Sequist won on debut at Colonial Downs before going to the Spinaway. Junior Alvarado has the mount from post position three.

Cypress Creek Equine and Arnold Bennewith's Dream Lith won her debut outing by 2¼ lengths at Saratoga prior to the Spinaway. Robertino Diodoro trains Dream Lith, who will exit post position four under Adam Beschizza.

Average Joe Racing Stables' Myfavoritedaughter took three tries to notch her first victory, which came by 25 lengths over a sloppy track going 7 furlongs at Gulfstream Park prior to going to Del Mar. Trained by Jeff Engler, Myfavoritedaughter will be ridden by Corey Lanerie out of post position five.
