All-Sources Breeders’ Cup Handle Tops $60M for Third Year

All-sources handle for the 10-race program on the first day of the 40th Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 3 at Santa Anita Park was $61,747,341, the third consecutive year the Friday handle has topped $60 million.

The Future Stars Friday card featured five Breeders' Cup races for 2-year-old horses, the sixth consecutive year the Breeders' Cup has carded all of the juvenile races on the same day since the event expanded to its two-day format in 2007.

Friday's on-track attendance was 43,377. On-track handle was $6,541,751.

New Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool to Debut Before BC Friday

A new Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool with up to 40 betting interests, including the popular “All Others” option, will debut Tuesday, Nov. 1 and close Thursday, Nov. 3 in advance of the Breeders' Cup World Championships' Future Stars Friday.

The new three-day pool, which features $2 Win and Exacta wagering, will open Tuesday, Nov. 1 at noon (all times Eastern) and close Thursday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m.

Technology advancements now allow up to 40 pari-mutuel betting interests, up from 24 in previous years. Track officials will release the field for Pool 1 following the conclusion of Sunday's “Stars of Tomorrow I” at Churchill Downs.

All told, there are six Future Wager pools scheduled in advance of the 2023 Kentucky Derby: Nov. 1-3 (Pool 1); Nov. 24-27 (Pool 2); Jan. 20-22 (Pool 3); Feb. 10-12 (Pool 4); March 10-12 (Pool 5); and March 30-April 1 (Pool 6). The Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, which debuted in 2015 and requires bettors to wager on the winning sire for next year's Kentucky Derby winner, will be held concurrently with Pool 2 on Nov. 24-27. The lone Kentucky Oaks Future Wager will coincide with Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 5 on March 10-12.

Bets can be placed at Churchill Downs Racetrack, TwinSpires.com and other online wagering outlets and satellite wagering centers across North America.

Breeders’ Cup Friday Handle Decreases for 2019

All-sources handle on the Breeders’ Cup card on Friday at Keeneland was $50,285,986, a decrease of 11% compared to 2019 at Santa Anita ($56,517,228). In 2015, the last time the Breeders’ Cup World Championships were at Keeneland, the all-sources handle was $44,949,165 before a crowd of 44,497. The Future Stars Friday card took place without the general public in attendance due to COVID-19 safety measures established by the Breeders’ Cup and Keeneland. On-track handle for Friday was $1,123,620 with only participants and essential personnel present. On-track handle from Santa Anita’s 2019 Breeders’ Cup was $6,340,351.

New Stakes Winner for Into Mischief in Breeders’ Cup Friday Opener

Highly Motivated (Into Mischief) led home a 1-3 finish and became the 81st black-type winner for his sire, establishing a new track record in the opening race of Breeders’ Cup weekend.

Quick Tempo (Tapizar) won the break and set a slick early pace, as Javier Castellano had the favorite settled from a midfield fifth while glued to the inside. Pinching ground on the turn, Highly Motivated popped off the fence and went on the attack three wide off the home corner, grabbed the front-runner at the sixteenth pole and pulled readily clear while shaving 0.06 off the track record previously held by Limousine Liberal (Successful Appeal). Roderick (Into Mischief) raced prominently throughout and kept on gamely for third.

Having nearly overcome an eventful trip to miss by a neck to his stablemate Founder (Upstart) over a muddy Saratoga main track Aug. 29, the Klaravich homebred was exiting a popular 1 3/4-length graduation at Belmont Sept. 27.

Highly Motivated has a weanling half-brother by Flintshire (GB) and his stakes-winning dam was most recently bred to Into Mischief’s son Practical Joke.
