Hard Spun Colt Cruises To ‘TDN Rising Star’ Status At Ellis

Alder (Hard Spun)'s first trip to the gate July 15 at Ellis Park resulted in him being declared a non-starter after he became tangled and unseated Gerardo Corrales just as the bell sounded. With Corrales back aboard, no such issues plagued this 2-year-old colt as he sparkled down the lane to win on debut at Ellis Park on Sunday afternoon. The bold effort earned him 'TDN Rising Star' honors.

Off at 9-5 here, the Godolphin homebred settled midpack up the backstretch as a trio vied for the lead into the far turn. Taking aim at that bunch, Alder took the overland route with a sweeping four-wide move before the quarter pole, shifted to another gear running down the lane and won impressively by 6 1/4 lengths over fellow firster Honky Tonk Highway (City of Light).

The winner's dam foaled a colt by Street Boss Mar. 2 and she was bred to Mystic Guide for 2024. Second dam Forest Heiress (Forest Wildcat) is a multiple Grade III winner and counts GI Frank J. DeFrancis Memorial Dash S. hero Wildcat Heir as a full-brother. This is Hard Spun's 13th 'TDN Rising Star'.

Cox Team Readies for Next Test at Saratoga

Trainer Brad Cox sent out a host of graded-stakes winners for workouts at Saratoga this weekend, including GI Coaching Club American Oaks winner Wet Paint (Blame), who is targeting Saturday's GI Alabama S.

The Godolphin homebred posted her second work since her Oaks victory, covering five furlongs in 1:02.24 over the Oklahoma dirt training track in company with recent allowance winner and GSP Slip Mahoney.

“1:02 and a super good work,” said Cox. “She's been very steady and very good up here in the mornings. I like the way she came out of it and she's set up to go the mile and a quarter.”

Cox also sent out Godolphin's Matareya (Pioneerof the Nile) for a sharp five-furlong move in :59.22 over the Oklahoma track Saturday, her penultimate work before the GI Ballerina H. Aug. 26.

“Awesome work. It was very quick and good, not just quick,” said Cox. “A good gallop out as well, so she's set up for the Ballerina.”

Matareya was last seen finishing third in the June 24

GIII Chicago S. at Ellis behind Steve Asmussen trainee Society (Gun Runner), who also worked five-eighths in 1:00 flat Sunday over the Oklahoma main track.

Victorious in last season's GI Acorn S., Matareya took the GI Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs two starts back.

On Sunday, Miacomet Farm's Heavenly Sunday (Candy Ride) breezed over the Oklahoma training turf in preparation for Saturday's GII Lake Placid S. She was last see finishing second in the July 1 Tepin S. at Ellis.

“She's doing great. It was an awesome breeze, and all of her works here over the turf have been great,” said Cox. “I love her gallop outs and the way she's acting. I'm super pleased with her and hopefully, we get a good setup.”

Cox indicated a decision has not been made as to where Juddmonte's Set Piece would return following a win in Saturday's GI Arlington Million at Colonial Downs.

“I'll talk it over with Prince Khalid and his family and make a decision,” said Cox.

Veteran Set Piece Conquers Colonial With Arlington Million Score

NEW KENT, VA–Not far from the Colonial Downs racetrack in southeastern Virginia, a sign on the interstate reads, 'Welcome to America's Historic Triangle'. The trio of Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg provide a gateway into American history from a time when the British ruled the American colonies. And while it's been a long time since Great Britain had success in this part of the country, Set Piece (GB) (Dansili {GB}) got them back on the board with a win in the GI Arlington Million.

In Virginia's first rendition of the 'Million', held under a scorching sun in front of the largest crowd ever assembled at Colonial Downs, the Juddmonte horse, under the expert guidance of Florent Geroux, took his time from the gate and eased into stride at the rear of the field. Early leader Strong Quality (Quality Road), with Kentucky Derby and Belmont S. winner Javier Castellano aboard, went out to assume command and had no trouble up front through fractions of :22.96 and :46.67. Set Piece was eased out up the backstretch and into the far turn, had to come widest of the frontrunners to get himself into striking position at the quarter pole, and closed determinedly past Santin (Distorted Humor) to nab the clear win. The final time of 1:58.19 was both a stakes and a track record for the 1 1/4 mile distance.

“You hate to be that far behind,” said Katie Tolbert, assistant to winning trainer Brad Cox. “But when you see fractions like that, and Florent knows him so well, it gives you a little confidence that he's gonna make sure to be there at the end.”

“It was great,” added Florent Geroux. “I thought it was going to be an expected pace and it obviously was not. But up the backside, I could see a lot of horses and how they were going and I thought we were going quick enough.”

Pedigree Note:

English-based Dansili is responsible for 90 graded/group winners across the globe. Set Piece, out of a winning Kingmambo mare, is a half to multiple stakes winner and GSP Alocasia (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in addition to six other winners. This is also the family of G1 Coral-Eclipse S. winner Elmaamul (Diesis {GB}), MG1SW Reams of Verse (Nureyev), MGSW Eagle Poise (Empire Maker), GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf victress Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Portodora is responsible for an unraced 3-year-old filly by Nathaniel (Ire) and last reported a yearling Kingman (GB) filly.
