Oct. 7 Insights: Well-Related Juveniles Debut on Both Coasts

GALLANT MISCHIEF (Into Mischief), a $480,000 KEENOV purchase in 2021, will put his best foot forward in this first juvenile maiden on a packed Keeneland card for conditioner Mark Casse and owner Tracy Farmer. A half-brother to MGISW Beach Patrol (Lemon Drop Kid), he comes into this contest with a string of very strong works at Ellis Park, including three successive bullets starting Aug. 17 (1/12), Aug. 30 (1/17) and Sept. 10 (1/22). Gallant Mischief is out of a half-sister to a host of accomplished 'Berties' including MGSW Hurricane Bertie; MGSW & GISP Allamerican Bertie-dam of MSW Homerun Berti and graddam of multiple course-record setter MSW & GSP Believe in Bertie. 11th-KEE, $100k, Msw, 2yo, 6f, 6:18p.m. ET
Booth (Mitole), a $225,000 OBSMAR procurement this past spring, will take to the track after a Super Saturday of racing at Keeneland with an eye on breaking his maiden for trainer Steve Asmussen and the Heiligbrodts. Half-brother to GI Jockey Club Gold Cup hero Bright Future (Curlin), the colt can also count GI Hopeful S. winner Nutella Fella (Runhappy) in his extended female family.

To his inside and unveiling for the powerhouse WinStar and Siena Farms partnership is Rapoport (Consitution), who hails from the young broodmare Tiz Breathtaking (Tiznow), winner of the GIII Mazarine S. in Canada. This is the female family of the venerable Shared Account, dam of fellow Breeders' Cup champion Sharing, and of GSW Sparkle Blue (Hard Spun). The $300,000 KEESEP grad is trained by Todd Pletcher. Flying the flag for homebreds will be Godolphin's Nash (Medaglia d'Oro), who is out of a multiple graded stakes-winning half-sister to GSW Just Louise, dam of MGSW & MGISP Forbidden Kingdom. The half-brother to GSP Sara Street (Street Sense) will break from the rail for Brad Cox. TJCIS PPs.

A princely $1.7 million KEESEP acquisition for Zedan Racing, Coach Prime (Quality Road) will debut from the far outside of a packed maiden for Bob Baffert. A half-brother to MSP Dr Oseran (Kitten's Joy), he hails most notably from the female line of Spunoutacontrol, who accounts for MGSW & MGISP Fed Biz; SW Spun Silk–dam of GISW Joking (Distorted Humor) and granddam of MGSW Red Carpet Ready (Oscar Performance); and the dam of three stakes winners on the New York circuit. This is the extended family of noted stallions Tale of the Cat and Johannesburg. TJCIS PPs.

Gerry Dilger Equine Foundation Awards Pair Of Scholarships

The Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation would like to express its gratitude and appreciation to all its supporters that have contributed to the charity that assists young people starting off in the bloodstock business.

Based in Lexington, Kentucky, the foundation commenced its activities just three years ago in memory of County Clare native Gerry Dilger whose Dromoland Farm specialized in successful sales pinhooks and an elite breeding operation with great partners that produced consecutive Kentucky Derby winners Nyquist (Uncle Mo) and Always Dreaming (Bodemeister). However, Gerry was equally renowned as a nurturer of young people who found their way to Dromoland and gained so much life and work experience. The foundation was established by the Dilger family and friends to continue his teaching for the next generation and in a short period of time has awarded eighteen scholarships and three bursaries to students from around the world. Our partner schools in Ireland include University College Dublin, University of Limerick, CAFRE, KIldalton College and the Irish National Stud.

We were delighted to recently announce that Luis Ettedgui and Grace Hamilton were awarded scholarships to the Irish National Stud. Luis, a Venezuelan native, and a graduate from the University of Kentucky's Equine Science and Management program has experience working at Stonerside, Juddmonte, with Brad Cox and is currently working in Australia with Godolphin. Grace, originally from South Carolina is a University of Kentucky senior majoring in Equine Science and Management and minoring in Business. She has worked in many areas of the business including Coldwater Farm, Blandford Stud, Godolphin at Jonabell Farm and Marette Farrell, agent.

The board was very encouraged this year with the quality of applications for its various programs and will be announcing soon other award winners including the recipients of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Experience Scholarship. In a change of format for this particular scholarship, the awardees will be placed for one year with Springhouse Farm in Lexington and Hunter Valley Farm in Versailles.

The board also extends its thanks to all participants and organizers of the second foundation golf tournament which takes place Tuesday, Oct. 10 at Houston Oaks in Paris. Our first year was such a success that we will once again have a full turnout of twenty-nine teams of four. Further details of the charity's work and programs can be found here.

West Will Power Will Stand at Stud in Korea

Ben Glass, the stable manager for Gary and Mary West, has reported that GI Stephen Foster S. winner West Will Power (Bernardini–Wild Promises, by Wild Event) has been sold to a Korean farm, where he will stand at stud next year.

Glass said the deal was brokered by bloodstock agent Jun Park. Glass did not know what farm had bought West Will Power, but according to a Tweet from Korea Racing his new home will be Songma Farm.

On July 1, West Will Power picked up the biggest victory of his career, winning the GI Stephen Foster S. by a half-length, picking up his first Grade I win in the process. Afterward, however, he suffered a soft tissue injury and his retirement was announced in early August.

“He had an injury after that race, I believe in his left front pastern,” Glass said. “Dr. (Larry) Bramlage said it would take considerable time to heal, if it would heal at all. We didn't want to bring him back as a 7-year-old and maybe hurt him. He ran so well for us and was a homebred, so we decided the best thing to do was to retire him.”

Trained by Brad Cox, West Will Power was 7-for-17 during his career and earned $1,745,390. He also won the GII New Orleans Classic S. and the GII Hagyard Fayette S.

“He had a very nice career and that he's a homebred made it even nicer,” Glass said. “That's because we got the breeders' awards. We were really happy with him and the career he had.”

Glass said he tried to find a U.S. stallion farm that would agree to take West Will Power, but was unsuccessful.

“Sadly, Kentucky farms did not reach out to us and I tried quite a few,” he said. “I think with his age, being six, that probably stopped most of them. I tried hard to sell him throughout the whole United States. If this injury had happened earlier in his life I think we would have found a home for him here. But with his being six, then breeding at seven, his first foals would have been born when he was eight and wouldn't have run until he was 10. That's one of the reasons there wasn't a great deal of interest.”

The Wests have sent other stallions to Korea, including Concert Tour (Street Sense), the winner of the 2021 GII Rebel S. and the 2021 San Vicente S.

“We've sent a couple other horses to Korea,” Glass said. “We get pictures back and they just look gorgeous. They take great care of them and they are really coming on when it comes to their breeding program.”

Tuesday Insights: Half To Mandaloun Gets Turf Debut At Indy

Debuting for trainer Brad Cox, BADGE OF WAR (War Front) is the latest in a Juddmonte line dating back at least three generations. Brooch, herself a multiple group-stakes winner in Ireland, is already responsible for GI TVG.com Haskell S. winner, GI Kentucky Derby runner up and 'TDN Rising Star' Mandaloun (Into Mischief). The dam is also a half to MSW/MGSP Caponata (Selkirk) and from the family of G1SW Emulous (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and her daughter 'TDN Rising Star' G1SP Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}). Badge of War has been training forwardly into this spot with a pair of bullet five-furlong drills from his last three works over the Horseshoe Indianapolis main track. TJCIS PPS
