Keepmeinmind, Shedaresthedevil Work at Oaklawn for ’21 Debuts

Keepmeinmind (Laoban) worked five furlongs in a bullet :59 at Oaklawn Tuesday morning in preparation for a start in the GIII Southwest S. Feb. 15. The fastest of 17 works published at the distance, the 3-year-old completed the final quarter-mile in a sharp :22.80, galloping out six furlongs in 1:11.80, seven furlongs in 1:25.40 and a mile in 1:40.40, according to local clockers.

Accompanied by David Cohen, the winner of the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. last November worked over a fast track following the second break to renovate the racing surface.

It marked Keepmeinmind's fifth published workout this season at Oaklawn and the second bullet, following a five-furlong move in 1:00 Jan. 19.

“Did it the right way again,” said Robertino Diodoro, Oaklawn's leading trainer in 2020. “I love that his works have been very consistent. Again, I always say take each day at a time, but his works have been very consistent–consistently good–since he's been here.”

Diodoro indicated he plans to come back with an easy half-mile work and a “couple of stiff gallops” next week leading up to the Southwest, Oaklawn's second of four GI Kentucky Derby points races.

“I'd like it to be Tuesday [Feb. 9],” Diodoro said of the maintenance breeze. “But it could be adjusted by a day or two because it looks like a little bit of [weather].”

GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) returned to the work tab Monday morning at Oaklawn, covering three furlongs in :36.60 in preparation for her 2021 debut, possibly the Mar. 13 GII Azeri S. Under exercise rider Fernando Espinoza, she breezed following the first renovation break for newly minted Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox. Clockers had the 4-year-old galloping out a half-mile in :49.80 over the fast track.

“Really, really good,” Cox said after the work. “We were just looking for like :38, and she honestly looked like she was going :38. Just well within herself. Just nice and easy. We're not going to get in a big hurry with her, just kind of pick it up a little bit each week. Couldn't have asked for a better first work back.”

Shedaresthedevil was a finalist for an Eclipse Award as the country's champion 3-year-old filly of 2020 after winning four races, including the Kentucky Oaks and Oaklawn's GIII Honeybee S. She hasn't started since finishing third in the GI Spinster S. Oct. 4 at Keeneland, her first start against older horses.

Following the Spinster, Shedaresthedevil received a 60-day break before resuming light training in mid-December in Kentucky. She arrived at Oaklawn Jan. 9. Cox said the 1 1/16-mile Azeri, Oaklawn's final major prep for the GI Apple Blossom H. Apr. 17, is possible for her 2021 debut.

“It's going to get close there,” Cox said. “We're just going to have to kind of really watch her and let her tell us if she's ready for that, but that would be the first logical target.”

Oaks Winner Shedaresthedevil Back On The Work Tab At Oaklawn, Azeri Potential Target

Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil returned to the work tab Monday morning at Oaklawn, covering 3 furlongs in :36.60 in preparation for her 2021 debut, possibly the $350,000 Azeri Stakes (G2) for older fillies and mares March 13.

Shedaresthedevil, under exercise rider Fernando Espinoza, breezed on a fast track following the first break to renovate the racing surface for newly minted Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox and co-owner Staton Flurry of Hot Springs. Clockers had the 4-year-old daughter of Daredevil galloping out a half-mile in :49.80.

Following the Spinster, Shedaresthedevil received a 60-day break, Flurry said, before resuming light training in mid-December in Kentucky. She arrived at Oaklawn Jan. 9. Cox said the 1 1/16-mile Azeri, Oaklawn's final major prep for the $1 million Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) April 17, is a potential landing spot for Shedaresthedevil's 2021 debut.

“It's going to get close there,” Cox said. “We're just going to have to kind of really watch her and let her tell us if she's ready for that, but that would be the first logical target.”

Cox already has won Oaklawn's first of three Apple Blossom preps and is scheduled to have the heavy favorite in the second.

Getridofwhatailesu – in her stakes debut – was a 1 ½-length winner of the $150,000 Pippin at 1 mile Jan. 23. It marked the third victory in the last four starts for Getridofwhatailesu, who hadn't raced since winning an allowance route last March at Oaklawn. Cox said Getridofwhatailesu was subsequently diagnosed with “lameness that didn't require surgery” and sent to Custom Care Equine in South Carolina to recover.

“They did a fantastic job,” Cox said. “She came back to us and when we started breezing her she appeared to be the same horse she was last year. We had a lot of high hopes for her last year. We thought she was a graded-stakes filly. It wasn't ideal, probably, to bring her back in that stake off the layoff, but just based off the condition book, with what she's eligible for, there's not a lot of options. We were kind of forced into the race and it worked out well.”

Cox said Getridofwhatailesu is being pointed for the Azeri.

Monomoy Girl, Cox's dual Eclipse Award winner, is scheduled to make her 2021 debut in the $250,000 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) Feb. 15 at Oaklawn. Monomoy Girl has won 13 of 15 career starts, including the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) Nov. 7 at Keeneland to conclude a perfect 2020 campaign (4 for 4) and clinch an Eclipse Award as the country's champion older dirt female. Monomoy Girl won the 2018 Kentucky Oaks en route to champion 3-year-old filly honors.

Knicks Go ‘In Great Shape’ After Pegasus Romp, Headed To Saudi Cup

Newly-minted champion trainer Brad Cox has been watching Pegasus World Cup winner Knicks Go very closely over the past week, and told the Thoroughbred Daily News that so long as all goes well with the Korea Racing Authority-owned colt's next breeze, he will be headed to Saudi Arabia for the $20 million Saudi Cup on Feb. 20.

“The owners would like to go to the Saudi Cup and they've made that clear,” Cox told the TDN. “I looked for a reason not to run him back in four weeks and he's given me no indication that would not be a good idea. That's why I've said I want to see him breeze one more time before we put him on a plane. He really rebounded from the Pegasus in great shape and in good order. He's not giving me any reason to not run him, so we're going to press forward.”

Plans call for Knicks Go to be shipped out on Monday, Feb. 8, and a strong showing in Saudi Arabia could lead the team to remain overseas for the $12 million Dubai World Cup on Mar. 27.

The 5-year-old son of Paynter first showed his talent with a win in the G1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland in 2018, then a runner-up finish in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He did not see the winner's circle again until transferred to Cox's care in 2020, when he won a pair of allowance races and the G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Following his dominant showing in the G1 Pegasus World Cup, Knicks Go's record stands at six wins, three seconds and a third from 18 starts with earnings of $3,088,995.

Also expected to make the trip to Saudi Arabia for the $20 million race are G1 Malibu winner Charlatan (Bob Baffert) and multiple G1-placed Tacitus (Bill Mott).

Knicks Go Headed to Saudi Cup; DWC Possible

Coming off a dominant win in the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational, Knicks Go (Paynter) is scheduled to make his next start in the $20 million Saudi Cup on Feb. 20 in Riyadh.

“As long as he breezes well this weekend, we're going to the Saudi Cup,” trainer Brad Cox said. “We plan to ship him out Monday [Feb. 8].”

Cox said the decision became easier when it became clear that Knicks Go came out of the Pegasus in perfect shape.

“The owners [the Korea Racing Authority] would like to go to the Saudi Cup and they've made that clear. In Saudi Arabia, Knicks Go may be going up against the only horse in training that could possibly beat him. Charlatan (Speightstown) is being pointed to the race for trainer Bob Baffert and is coming off a dazzling win in the GI Runhappy Malibu S.

“It will be a good match-up between those two,” Cox said. “Our horse does have to make the adjustment back to one turn and we don't know how he will handle that. I do like that he handled not having any Lasix at Gulfstream just fine. That's a positive and one thing we have going for us. He's in great form right now and, hopefully, we can keep him that way.”

With explosive early speed, Charlatan and Knicks Go have the same running style, which could cause a problem for both.

“Sure, that is a possibility,” Cox said when asked about the potential of a speed duel. “It will be up to the jockeys. Once the post positions are drawn, we'll have to handicap the race and we will know more after that.”

Joel Rosario will ride Knicks Go in the Saudi Cup and Mike Smith has the mount on Charlatan.

While some may believe running in both the Saudi Cup and the Mar. 27 Dubai World Cup may be asking too much of a horse, Cox said the $12 million race at a mile-and-a-quarter is also a target.

“Dubai is definitely under consideration,” he said. “The team that we have shipping over to Saudi Arabia has been told to pack enough clothes for several weeks. As long as he runs well in Saudi Arabia and comes out of it in good order, we will turn our attention to Dubai.”
