Concert Tour, Caddo River Top Probables For Arkansas Derby

The Oaklawn racing department listed six probables Saturday morning for the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) April 10. Post positions for the 1 1/8-mile race, Oaklawn's fourth and final Kentucky Derby points event, will be drawn Tuesday.

Expected Arkansas Derby entrants are Caddo River for trainer Brad Cox, Concert Tour (Bob Baffert), Get Her Number (Peter Miller), Hozier (Baffert), Last Samurai (Dallas Stewart) and Super Stock (Steve Asmussen).

The Arkansas Derby will offer 170 points (100-40-20-10, respectively) to the top four finishers toward starting eligibility for the Kentucky Derby.

Concert Tour remained unbeaten in three career starts with a front-running 4 ¼-length winner of the $1 million Rebel Stakes (G2) March 13 at Oaklawn. It was a record-extending eighth Rebel victory for Baffert, who also finished second in the 1 1/16-mile race with Hozier.

Super Stock, Caddo River and Get Her Number ran fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively, in the Rebel, which is Oaklawn's third Kentucky Derby points race.

A Tex Sutton Equine Air Transport flight carrying Southern California-based Concert Tour, Get Her Number and Hozier is scheduled to arrive Wednesday.

Caddo River won Oaklawn's first Kentucky Derby points race, the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 22, by a record 10 ¼ lengths. A homebred for John Ed Anthony of Hot Springs, Caddo River completed major preparations for the Arkansas Derby with a 5-furlong work, in company, over a fast track Saturday morning at Oaklawn under Francisco Arrieta.

Caddo River, who breezed with stablemate Night Ops, a multiple-stakes winning older horse, covered the distance in 1:00.20 and galloped out 6 furlongs in 1:13.40. The half-mile split was :47.80.

“He worked well,” said Jorgito Abrego, who oversees Cox's Oaklawn division.

Anthony has won the Arkansas Derby a record three times (1980, 1987 and 1992).

The Arkansas Derby is one of four stakes April 10 at Oaklawn, the others being the $500,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) for older horses at 6 furlongs, $400,000 Oaklawn Mile for older horses and the $250,000 Carousel for older fillies and mares at 6 furlongs.

Whitmore, an Eclipse Award winner as the country's champion male sprinter of 2020, and C Z Rocket are scheduled to renew their rivalry in the Count Fleet. Whitmore and C Z Rocket ran 1-2, respectively, in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) Nov. 7 at Keeneland. C Z Rocket turned the tables on Whitmore in the $200,000 Hot Springs Stakes March 13. Whitmore is seeking his fourth Count Fleet victory.

One Oaklawn Mile probable, Blackberry Wine, worked a half-mile in :46.60 Saturday morning at Oaklawn for trainer Joe Sharp.

Multiple graded stakes winner Frank's Rockette is expected to head the Carousel. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Frank's Rockette won the $150,000 American Beauty Stakes Jan. 30 at Oaklawn in her 4-year-old debut. The daughter of Into Mischief is a homebred for prominent North Little Rock, Ark., businessman Frank Fletcher.

Post positions for the other three stakes also will be drawn Tuesday.

Cox Pleased With Essential Quality’s Blue Grass Performance: ‘I Liked That He Got A Test’

Trainer Brad Cox was a happy camper Sunday morning, pleased with all aspects of the gutty victory by Godolphin's undefeated champion Essential Quality in Saturday's $800,000 Toyota Blue Grass (G2) at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

“He looks good this morning and I am happy with the way he came out of the race,” Cox said of Essential Quality, a son of Tapit who extended his unbeaten streak to five with his neck victory over Highly Motivated. “I liked that he got a test yesterday. It was not like he just galloped up to the leader and went on by.”

Cox said Essential Quality would go to Churchill Downs Monday morning after training hours to join his string there and continue preparations for the $3-million Kentucky Derby (G1) Presented by Woodford Reserve on May 1.

Essential Quality might be joined soon at Churchill by the Into Mischief colt Highly Motivated, according to Whit Beckman, assistant to trainer Chad Brown.

“He is good this morning,” Beckman said of Highly Motivated. “He put in a valiant effort yesterday going two turns for the first time. He took all the heat and kept battling.

“I am not sure (how long he will stay here), but knowing Chad I would not be surprised to see him go to Churchill for a couple of works.”

John and Diane Fradkin's Rombauer, who picked up 20 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby with his third-place finish in the Toyota Blue Grass, might wait for the Preakness (G1) on May 15, trainer Michael McCarthy said via text.

The Kentucky Derby is limited to the top 20 point earners that pass the entry box and Rombauer has 34 points, which is good for 21st on the leaderboard with two more points races to go on Saturday: the Arkansas Derby (G1), which awards 170 points on a 100-40-20-10 scale to the top four finishers, and Keeneland's Stonestreet Lexington (G3), which offers 34 points on a 20-8-4-2 scale.

Prior to the Toyota Blue Grass, Rombauer won the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields and earned an automatic berth into the Preakness.

BBN Racing's Hidden Stash picked up 10 Derby points for his fourth-place finish to boost his total to 32, good for 23^rd on the leaderboard.

“He is good this morning,” trainer Vicki Oliver said. “We will see what the owners want to do – either the Derby or, if he looks tired, wait for the Preakness or Belmont.”

The Kentucky Derby dream ended for Cypress Creek, Arnold Bennewith and Spendthrift Farm's Keepmeinmind with his fifth-place finish in the Toyota Blue Grass, a position that earned him no points toward the Run for the Roses. Keepmeinmind, runner-up to Essential Quality in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) and third to him in the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance here last fall, has 18 points and stands 28th on the leaderboard.

“I don't know what to tell you (about the Toyota Blue Grass performance),” trainer Robertino Diodoro said before heading back to his main string at Oaklawn Park. “Obviously we don't have enough points and what's next, that's the million-dollar question.”

The day was not a total loss for Diodoro as Cypress Creek's Ava's Grace finished second in the Fantasy (G3) at Oaklawn and picked up 40 points toward the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and a likely spot in the 14-horse starting gate.

“We are pretty excited about her,” Diodoro said. “I don't know if she will come here first and then go to Louisville but either way we have to get her up here ASAP from Oaklawn.”

Cox, Saenz Take Two Of Three Stakes On Sam Houston’s Closing-Night Program

Sam Houston Race Park in Houston, Texas, closed out its 2021Thoroughbred racing season on Saturday, April 3, with Houston Showcase Night. Three exciting finishes on the newly formed racing event capped a very successful meet on a high note!

Sky Ride Returns to the Winner's Circle in the $75,000 Bucharest Stakes

The $75,000 Bucharest Stakes featured just five runners, with a solid showing once again by Triple V Racing LLC's Sky Ride to clinch back-to back stakes this meet.

The Kentucky-bred son of Candy Ride won the $75,000 Stonerside Sprint on January 31 in a dead heat with Hollis. Jockey Leandro Goncalves was aboard in two very different finishes. Sky Ride won the Stonerside with a powerful closing effort, but this evening, the bay gelding pretty much did it on the front, and was able to hold off his rivals, covering seven furlongs in 1:24.28.

Goncalves, who notched his 2,000th career win here on March 27, took command at the half-mile mark, which was completed in :45.72. Heading into the final turn, he was able to build a commanding lead over his stablemate Good Scout, drawing off to an impressive eight length score.

“Last time he made up ground, but today we had a different plan,” explained Goncalves. “He just galloped around the track; I never hit him, just asked him and he responded. J.R. (trainer J.R. Caldwell) could have ridden him tonight.”

“Maybe I could have ridden him for the first 25 yards,” quipped Caldwell. “He's a great horse, won three races here, including two stakes. We pointed him to this meet, and we couldn't have asked for more. He was a little fresh today; I was a little surprised to see him on the lead, but it was a good win.”

Good Scout ridden by Ezequiel Lara, held for second. Gold Street ran third and Trumps Revenge completed the superfecta.

Sent off as the heavy favorite, Sky Ride ($2.80), has won five of his 16 starts and will be pointed to Lone Star Park, according to Caldwell.

The stakes is named in honor of the late Thoroughbred sprinter Bucharest, owned by Israel Flores and trained by Amos Laborde, who set three track records at Sam Houston Race Park, including the lightning fast six furlong time of 1:08.88 on May 11, 1994, as well as his 1:12.29 seven furlong clocking on May 4, 1996.

Raven's Cry Takes the $75,000 Miss HoustonTurf Stakes with a Powerful Closing Kick

The popularity of the Connally Turf Course at Sam Houston Race Park has grown in unprecedented fashion and attracted a very classy field of fillies and mares to the $75,000 Miss Houston Turf.

Raven's Cry (IRE) drew in from the also eligible list. The 4-year-old daughter of Raven's Pass had won three of her eight turf starts for owner Martin S. Schwartz. She's trained by Eclipse Award winning condition Brad Cox who gave the call to Louisiana-based jockey Diego Saenz.

Saenz guided the bay filly through fractions of :22.48; :46.19 and 1:11.48 before gaining the lead at the top of the stretch. She was able to hold off a late charge by Valentines Day, crossing the wire of the one mile turf feature in 1:36.09.

“I knew she was a nice filly,” said Saenz. “The pace set up very well for her today.”

Cox was in Kentucky winning the Grade 2,Toyota Blue Grass with Essential Quality, so assistant Ricky Giannini saddled Raven's Cry at Sam Houston.

“She drew pretty wide, but after her win at Fair Grounds, this was a good fit for her,” said Giannini. “Diego got her into a very good striking position.”

Love Partnership Interests LP's Valentines Day ran third in the $75,000 Jersey Lilly on January 31 for trainer Bret Calhoun. The 4-year-old daughter of Summer Front closed gamely for second under rider Lindey Wade. Brandon's Babe completed the trifecta with Iram Diego in the saddle. Our Iris Rose ran fourth, followed by Quick, Quick, Quick, Palio Flag, Curlin's Journey, After Red Son, Good Fight, Simple Pleasure, Miss Perfecta and early pacesetter Believe In Beauty (IRE).

Raven's Cry ($5.00) improved her career record to four wins from nine starts and purses of $116.748.

Royal Prince Makes Sam Houston Debut a Winning One in $75,000 Bayou City Stakes

In the final stakes race of the 2021 Sam Houston Thoroughbred meet, Royal Prince ($2.80) captured the $75,000 Bayou City Stakes for trainer Brad Cox and owner Steve Landers Racing LLC.

Jockey Diego Saenz gave Royal Prince a confident and well-timed ride in the final stake of the night. The pair stalked the pace and dueled with Holy Vow and Sophie Doyle in the stretch before pulling away to win by three-quarters of a length.

“I was trapped for a little while, but I got the chance to get out and he responded for me,” said Saenz.

The 1 1/16 miles event for 3-year-olds was contested on a firm turf course with a final time of 1:43.88.

Royal Prince was the heavy post-time favorite after winning his last out, the $75,000 Black Gold Stakes at the Fair Grounds in late February. The well-traveled colt had previously raced at Del Mar, Keeneland and Kentucky Downs before arriving at Sam Houston.

The 3-year-old son of Cairo Prince is out of Rose and Shine, by Mr. Sekiguchi, and was bred in Kentucky by Sandra Sexton and Silver Fern Farm.

“We wanted to take a logical step forward before we run him in a graded stakes,” added Gianinni. “This was a nice race after the Black Gold; he needed every inch, but got the job done.”

Holy Vow finished in second for trainer Scott Young, with Drivehappy closing to gain third for trainer Steve Asmussen. Texas Bad Boy, War Falcon, Red N Wild and I'm Money completed the field. Stans Hookin Bull was scratched.

‘Getting Extremely Good At The Perfect Time’: Pauline’s Pearl Takes Fantasy Stakes

Stonestreet Stables, LLC's Pauline's Pearl lived up to her 4-to-5 odds and secured herself a spot in the starting gate for the April 30 Kentucky Oaks (G1) with her one-length victory in Saturday's $600,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Ark.

Pauline's Pearl raced wide early in fourth place as Ava's Grace led the field of 3-year-old fillies through opening fractions of :23.11 and :46.86 for the first half mile. The heavy favorite moved within a head of the leader after three-quarters in 1:11.84 before shaking clear late to win the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:43.64 over a fast track. Coach, the 3-1 second choice, closed late to get up for third.

Take Charge Lorin, Sylvia Q and West Side Girl completed the order of finish. Sun Path was scratched.

“She's all class,” trainer Steve Asmussen said. “Has a tremendous pedigree. She's gotten better every day. She's gotten faster with each race. She's getting extremely good at the perfect time.”

Pauline's Pearl earned 100 points with her victory in the Fantasy and is now ranked fourth on the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard with a total of 120 points. Ava's Grace, who had no previous points, earned 40 points for second. Coach earned 10 points for thirdand Take Charge Lorin earned 10 points for her fourth-place finish, but is not nominated to the Kentucky Oaks. The Oaks is limited to 14 starters.

Pauline's Pearl, a homebred by Tapit out of Grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick, also trained by Asmussen, improved her record to 2-1-1 in five career starts and has now earned $461,500. She returned $3.60, $2.80 and $2.10.

There will be no live racing Sunday in observance of the Easter holiday. Live racing will resume Thursday, April 8 for the start a four-day race week highlighted by the $1 million Arkansas Derby and three other stakes on Saturday, April 10.

He said how confident he was around there. He used a little of her away from there, just to not hand it to them. Jockey Martin Garcia, fifth with Sylvia Q: “I had a good trip. The two horses (Ava's Grace and Take Charge Lorin), they went fast and I was right behind. I had perfect position right on the rail. I know when I asked, the rail was open and she just didn't respond. It wasn't her day. But she's better than that. Today just wasn't her day.”
