American Pharoah Colt Tops Final Session Of Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase

The Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase concluded its two-day run in Lexington, Ky. on Thursday with another solid session of sales, led by a seven-figure colt from the third crop of last year's champion first-crop sire American Pharoah.

Speedway Stables purchased the session-topper for $1.25 million from the consignment of Denali Stud, agent.

Offered as Hip 400, the American Pharoah colt is out of the stakes winning Victory Gallop mare Swingit, whose first five starters are all winners, including multiple Grade 1-placed millionaire Neolithic (Harlan's Holiday). This colt is also a half-sibling to Travel Column (Frosted), who broke her maiden impressively on debut at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks day. The session-topper hails from the immediate family of champions Housemaster and Carnuaba.

Hip 400 was bred in Kentucky by Mr. & Mrs. Bayne Welker Jr.

The second-highest price on the day was $800,000 paid for Hip 501, a colt by Into Mischief, last year's champion sire, current leading sire, and sire of Kentucky Derby winner Authentic.

That colt was purchased by Donato Lanni, agent for SF/Starlight/Madaket from the consignment of Indian Creek, agent. Hip 501 is the first foal out of Blind Copy, a full-sister to juvenile stakes winner Lucky Folie, from the immediate family of Grade 1 winners Golden Pheasant and Henley's Joy. Hip 501 was bred in Kentucky by Fifth Avenue Bloodstock.

The sale's overall most expensive offering came during the first session, when Hip 232, a filly by Quality Road out of Irish One Thousand Guineas winner Marvellous sold to Robbie Medina, agent for Joseph Allen, for $1,500,000.

Marvellous, a daughter of Galileo who has already produced a stakes winner in Fort Myers, is out of Group 2 winner You'resothrilling, a full-sister to European Horse of the Year and successful sire Giant's Causeway. Marvellous is a full-sister to Group 1 winners Gleneagles and Happily, as well as to group stakes winners Taj Mahal and Coolmore. The session-topper was bred in Kentucky by Orpendale, Chelston and Wynatt.

The top filly was consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent.

“One of the greatest compliments you can have is when someone entrusts you with something of value,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning on the success of the sale despite the uncertainty brought to the industry by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our commitment to those men and women was that we were going to do everything we possibly could to create the most viable marketplace under the circumstances… I think we did that.

Overall, 348 yearlings changed hands for $61,765,000. The average was $177,486 and the median was $120,000.

“The 'death' of the marketplace has been greatly exaggerated,” Browning said. “There is activity, there is a viable market. It's selective, and it continues to be selective, but there is viability and there is hope.”

In what has been a volatile auction season due to the cancellations and rescheduled sales tied to COVID-19, not to mention the death of senior account executive Dennis Lynch in May, Browning saluted his team for keeping steady in uncharted waters.

“If anybody could have imagined six months ago; no Gulfstream sale, no July yearling sale, no Saratoga sale, no New York-bred sale, that we'd be sitting here having sold over $60 million in horses over the last two days, I think most people would have called B.S. on us,” he said. “They stayed in the buggy with us. There were a lot of days where people would say, 'What are we gonna do?' Hell, I don't know. We're going to continue to try to find the answers and we're going to continue to do the right thing every day. We'll make a decision, we'll try to put our heart and soul in it, and we'll continue to try to do the best that we can. I think, across the board, our team did that.”

Multiple Grade 1 Winner Rushing Fall To Be Offered At Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Female turf division leader Rushing Fall, a Breeders' Cup champion and multiple Grade 1 winner, will be offered at this year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

The 5-year-old mare will be consigned by Indian Creek, agent, on behalf of the Edwards family's e Five Racing Thoroughbreds.

Trained throughout her career by four-time Eclipse champion trainer Chad Brown, Rushing Fall is a six-time Grade 1 winner of $2,553,000. She is one of just three females in the modern era to win Grade 1 races at two, three, four, and five, alongside Beholder and Lady Eli.

Since winning her career debut at Belmont in September of her 2-year-old year, Rushing Fall has competed exclusively in graded stakes company, amassing 10 career graded stakes wins at five different tracks from coast-to-coast. Her impeccable record counts 11 wins and two seconds from 14 career starts.

At two, Rushing Fall won the Grade 3 Jessamine Stakes by more than three lengths in her second career start. In her next start, she captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on her way to being named a finalist for Eclipse champion 2-year-old filly.

At three, she notched wins in the G2 Appalachian Stakes and G2 Lake Placid Stakes, followed by a gate-to-wire win in the prestigious G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

She began her 4-year-old campaign with another scintillating front-running win in the G1 Jenny Wiley Stakes. She followed that win up with a victory in the prestigious G1 Just a Game Stakes in near-course record time.

This year, at five, Rushing Fall is in arguably the best form of her career. She began her 2020 campaign with another brilliant wire-to-wire victory in the G3 Beaugay Stakes, and then successfully defended her title in the G1 Jenny Wiley Stakes, setting a new course record for 1 1/16 miles in 1:39.02. Most recently, she captured Saratoga's prestigious G1 Diana Stakes in near-course record time on Aug. 23.

Rushing Fall is now pointing toward a return to the Breeders' Cup, prior to the Fasig-Tipton November Sale on Sunday, Nov. 8 in Lexington, Ky.

Purchased as a yearling at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale by agent Mike Ryan on behalf of the Edwards family, Rushing Fall is by leading international sire More Than Ready. He is the sire of the dams of more than 90 black-type winners worldwide.

Rushing Fall is out of the Forestry mare Autumnal, a 100-percent winner-producer.  She is a half-sister to stakes winner and multiple graded stakes placed Milam, as well as stakes placed Autumn Song. Rushing Fall is also a half-sister to Homecoming Dance, the dam of stakes winner Empire Line, as well as Hang a Star, a graded stakes placed performer this year. Her immediate family includes G1 winners Albert the Great and Trumpet's Blare.

“Rushing Fall is one of the more brilliant turf females we have seen in some time, compiling a near perfect record in capturing her division's most prestigious and competitive races,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning.  “She is a true collector's item, and we are honored that the Edwards Family has entrusted her sale to Fasig-Tipton.”

Fasig-Tipton Consolidates Saratoga Fall, Midlantic December Mixed Sales For 2020

Due to the current travel restrictions put in place by the state of New York to combat the spread of COVID-19, Fasig-Tipton will not conduct the Saratoga Fall Sale as originally scheduled on Oct. 20 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Instead, for this year, Fasig-Tipton will combine the auction with its Midlantic December Mixed and Horses of Racing Age sale, which will now be held over two days on Dec. 7 and 8.

Governor Andrew Cuomo's New York Travel Advisory requires any individuals that travel to New York – from any of the states currently listed – to complete a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon arrival in the state. There are currently 35 states/territories listed under this travel advisory, including horse racing regions Kentucky, Florida, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, California, and Texas.

“The current travel advisory requirements make it virtually impossible for many buyers from out of state to attend an auction in Saratoga,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “We do not know what the duration or scope of the New York Travel Advisory will be in October. Combining our Saratoga Fall and Midlantic December sales into a two-day auction in Maryland is the prudent and logical course of action at this point in time.”

The Midlantic December Mixed and Horses of Racing Age sale will be conducted on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 7-8, at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md. Entries for the main catalog will close on Sept. 18. The entry deadline for the Horses of Racing Age Supplement is Nov. 13.

Fasig-Tipton Catalogues 662 for Selected Yearlings Showcase

Fasig-Tipton, which has been forced to shuffle its traditional calendar of yearling auctions due to the global pandemic, has released a catalogue of 662 head for its Selected Yearlings Showcase, which will be held Sept. 9 and 10 at its Newtown Paddocks in Lexington. Fasig-Tipton cancelled its three select sales–the July, Saratoga and New York-Bred Sales–and the showcase auction will be its only select sale of 2020.

“We are thrilled with the overall quality of the catalogue, both in terms of the pedigree and the physical conformation of the horses,” Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. said Monday afternoon. “We couldn’t be any more pleased to have this group of horses on display in the showcase this year.”

Hips one through 330 will be offered during Wednesday’s first session of the showcase sale and hips 331-662 will be offered during the second session Thursday. The sale will begin with a group of New York-bred yearlings, which are catalogued as hips 1-164.

Of expectations when the first-ever showcase was announced at the end of April, Browning added, “I didn’t have any preconceived notions, per se. I don’t think any of us knew what to expect. I will say though, if somebody had told me that we would be able to put together a group of horses of this quantity with this quality, I would have been ecstatic. The support that we’ve received from our consignors and the men and women who own top yearlings has been very gratifying and it’s very much appreciated.”

With the coronavirus causing lockdowns across the globe and racing coming virtually to a halt this past spring, Fasig-Tipton was forced to scupper its Gulfstream 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale and its Santa Anita 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. The sales company produced a strong market when bidding returned with the Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale at the end of June and at its July Horses of Racing Age Sale. Those results, plus the return of high-class racing across the country, should provide buyers and sellers with a level of optimism heading into the showcase sale.

“Certainly the sales that we’ve conducted have been encouraging,” Browning said. “And it is sure nice to see quality racing taking place in Saratoga and Del Mar and Ellis Park and Gulfstream Park, literally all across the United States. I think that makes owners and trainers and participants in the industry feel much more confident than they did 45 days or so ago when there was inactivity, essentially paralysis. So I think that is obviously a very positive sign. The 2-year-old sales and the horses of racing age sales that have been conducted in June and July have shown the resiliency of the men and women who participate in this game and the love they have for it.”

Among the Fasig-Tipton graduates on the showcase catalogue’s cover include GI Kentucky Derby contenders Tiz the Law (Constitution) and Honor A.P. (Honor Code), as well as GI Kentucky Oaks contender Speech (Mr Speaker). Browning said those graduates are indicative of the quality of offerings the company prides itself on.

“I think the buyers will be very impressed when they look at the catalogue online or on their iPads or when they get it in their hands,” he said. “More importantly, the buyers are going to be very impressed when they come on the sales grounds and look at the individuals. We’ve built our reputation–and we take pride in–the physical aspect of our selected sales and I think the results speak loudly with the success of our sales graduates. I am confident that people are going to come on these sales grounds and say, ‘Wow. That is a really nice group of horses they’ve assembled for the Yearlings Showcase at Fasig-Tipton.'”

At both the Midlantic and July sales, Fasig-Tipton instituted safety protocols which included temperature checks, masks and social distancing.

As for what protocols participants should expect at the showcase, Browning said, “We are having multiple discussions on an everyday basis as more information is obtained and we see trends and movements in both the state of Kentucky and around the United States. We certainly want to make sure we conduct the sale in as safe an environment as we possibly can to give buyers and sellers alike the confidence to participate.”

Last week, Keeneland announced it would be requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test for people attending its September Yearling Sale. Asked if Fasig-Tipton would make a similar requirement, Browning reiterated, “We will continue to monitor the situation and finalize our protocols in upcoming days, but they have not been finalized at this time.”

Travel concerns and restrictions have limited international participation in auctions this spring, but both Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland have been coordinating with local officials to hopefully pave the way for foreign buyers to attend auctions this fall.

“Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland are working closely with the KTA and the Breeders’ Cup and the NTRA, along with government officials, Senator [Mitch] McConnell’s office and Representative [Andy] Barr’s office to try to obtain some waivers for key participants in foreign countries to be able to attend the sale,” Browning said. “That process is ongoing and will continue to be ongoing and we will hopefully receive some positive news. I think it will be a situation that looms between now and the time of the sales in September and it is going to depend on each individual’s assessment of their level of comfort with regards to travel.”

Fasig-Tipton will unveil its newly updated Enhanced Catalogue platform for the showcase. A traditional offering at its November and July Horses of Racing Age sales, the Enhanced Catalogue will be available beginning in late August with walking videos of all yearlings available for viewing beginning Sept. 2.

Fasig-Tipton, which introduced online bidding for the first time at its Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, will again offer buyers the opportunity to bid online at the showcase.

The showcase catalogue may be viewed at www.fasig-tipton.com.
