Bolt d’Oro Filly Stays Perfect at Santa Anita

7th-Santa Anita, $72,500, Alw (NW1$X)/Opt. Clm ($100,000), 3-27, 3yo, f, 7f, 1:22.07, ft, 2 lengths.
ANYWHO (f, 3, Bolt d'Oro–Fancy and Flashy {SP}, by Zensational) , making her first start in the Hronis Racing colors, took her record to a perfect two-for-two with a determined victory at Santa Anita Monday. The 9-2 shot prompted the pace of longshot Liberal Lady (Mor Spirit), quickened on the bend to challenge the pacesetter and grabbed the lead into the stretch. She shrugged off favored Coffee in Bed (Curlin) down the lane and sailed under the wire two lengths in front.

Anywho debuted with a victory at the Belmont at Aqueduct meet last October for Rob Masiello and trainer Tom Albertrani before selling for $290,000 to the bid of bloodstock agent David Ingordo at last year's Keeneland November sale. She had originally been purchased by agent Joe Migliore for $300,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September sale.

The bay filly, a half-sister to graded-placed Wipe the Slate (Nyquist, GSP, $122,999), has a 2-year-old half-brother by Catholic Boy–who sold to bloodstock agent Alistair Roden for $55,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale–as well as a yearling half-sister by McKinzie. Stakes-placed Fancy and Flashy was bred to Maxfield last year. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, $95,450.

American Dirt Pedigrees To The Fore At Goffs Dubai Breeze-Up

There are American pedigrees galore that feature in the 73-strong catalogue for the Goffs Dubai Breeze-Up Sale, which takes place Tuesday afternoon in the saddling enclosure at Meydan Racecourse.

With the lowering of COVID-related travel restrictions in 2022, European-based resellers were a noted presence at this country's yearling auctions last summer and fall, and with the increased focus on dirt racing in the Gulf region–not only at the racetracks of the Emirates Racing Association, but also in Saudi Arabia and, to a lesser extent, Qatar–it stands to reason that American-bred offerings would prove appealing.

To follow are a handful of the horses on offer Tuesday. The sale breeze-up was to be held Monday over the all-weather training track a stone's throw from the sprawling Meydan grandstand, but the works are untimed, giving the newly turned juveniles an opportunity to exhibit their wares without fully extending themselves.

A comprehensive sale preview will appear in Tuesday's TDN European edition.

Lot 18, c, Gun Runner–Baby Go Far (Brz), by Elusive Quality
Consigned by Powerstown Stud
Bred by Stud TNT LLC (KY)

A $160,000 purchase out of the Keeneland September Sale, this Mar. 11 foal is out of a Brazilian Group 1-placed daughter of G1SW Linda Rafaela (Brz) (Bin Ajwaad {Ire}), herself the dam of G1 Brazilian Oaks heroine Viva Rafaela (Brz) (Know Heights {Ire}) and granddam of French listed winner Babala (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Linda Rafaela's winning daughter Awesome Rafaela (Brz) (Elusive Quality) produced GIII Edgewood S.-winning 'TDN Rising Star' New Year's Eve (Kitten's Joy).

Lot 25, c, Constitution–Caribbean Babe, by Arch
Consigned by Grove Stud
Bred by CHC Inc (KY)

This half-brother to G3 Killavullan S. third Bold Discovery (Bolt d'Oro) is out of a half-sister to multiple graded-stakes winner and Grade I-placed Independence Hall–also a son of Constitution–as well as Grade III winner Black Onyx (Rock Hard Ten), SW & GSP Francois (Smarty Jones) and GSP Quality Council (Elusive Quality). Third dam Desert Stormette (Storm Cat) was a sister to GI Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Desert Stormer and the family also includes Group 1-winning juvenile filly White Moonstone (Dynaformer).

Lot 28, c, Liam's Map–Class Included, by Include
Consigned by Longways Stables
Bred by Buck Pond Farm Inc (KY)

Purchased by Durcan Bloodstock/Longways for $100,000 out of the Keeneland September sale, this chestnut colt is the latest from his dam, whose 11 career stakes victories include the GIII Ballerina S. in Western Canada and additionaal black-type successes at the Fair Grounds, Delta Downs and Emerald Downs. Doug Arnold acquired Class Included for $110,000 in foal to Star Guitar at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale.

Lot 34, c, Bolt d'Oro–Dame Ursula (GB), by Elusive Quality
Consigned by Longways Stables
Bred by Runnymede Farm One & P J Callahan (KY)

A half-brother to the stakes-placed Fairyland (Scat Daddy), the May 1 foal is out of a half-sister to Agnes Digital (Crafty Prospector), nine times a stakes winner in Japan and victorious in the G1 Hong Kong Cup in 2001. The colt, a $155,000 KEESEP purchase by Durcan/Longways, hails from the deeper female family of Blushing Groom (Fr). Bolt d'Oro is the sire of G2 UAE Derby hopeful Mr Raj, a graduate of the inaugural Dubai Breeze-Up Sale.

Lot 39, c, Palace Malice–Fiery Pulpit, by Pulpit
Consigned by The Bloodstock Connection
Bred by Taylor Made Stallions Inc, Pollock Farms & Patrick H Payne, et al (KY)

Lot 39 stands to benefit from Saturday's Dubai World Cup meeting, as the $23,000 KEEJAN yearling and $50,000 KEESEP yearling is a half-brother to the progressive GIII Mr. Prospector S. winner Sibelius (Not This Time), one of five American entries for the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen. The Feb. 15 foal is out of a half-sister to the talented Grade III-winning turf distaffer Clamorosa (Seattle Dancer).

Lot 44, f, More Than Ready–Gone to Town, by Munnings
Consigned by Powerstown Stud
Bred by Nursery Place & Dicken Equine (KY)

John Mayer's Nursery Place gave $240,000 for this half-sister to Canadian stakes winner Sans Souci Island (Chester House)–dam of MGSW River Seven (Johannesburg)–when she was offered in foal to Mendelssohn at Keeneland November in the fall of 2019. The Feb. 18 foal is one of several of Tuesday's offerings purchased as yearlings by bloodstock agent Chad Schumer, who gave $110,000 at KEESEP last fall. Go Soldier Go (Tapiture, $45,000 KEESEP), pinhooked by Schumer to last year's sale (€123,962), won the Listed Al Bastakiya S. Mar. 4 and also goes in Saturday's G2 UAE Derby.

‘Consignor Perspectives’ Series Recap

During the TDN's visit to Ocala last spring to scope out which first-crop sires were earning favor with the 2-year-old consignors, the response was fairly conclusive. Bolt d'Oro was a common prediction for leading freshman sire, and the consignors who believed in him before his first juveniles reached the starting gate certainly hit the nail on the head.

Interestingly, of the seven Bolt d'Oro progeny that were featured in our 'Thoughts from Ocala' video series (see here and here), five of those went on to break their maiden on debut. That group includes Agency, who spent his early days under saddle with SBM Training and Sales and went on to run second in the GIII Best Pal S., as well as King's Fortune, who was with Niall Brennan. Now owned in part by Brennan, the colt got his first win last month at Gulfstream for Todd Pletcher.

So who do the consignors in Ocala believe is the standout freshman sire this year? The most-mentioned stallion among the three consignors we visited was, hands down, Omaha Beach.

True, it's not an incredibly out-of-the-box response as the Spendthrift sire does hold the top stud fee in his class at $30,000 this year, but given his illustrious pedigree and the success of his yearlings in the sales ring, consignors have every reason to be excited about the Omaha Beach juveniles.

Read on to find out what a few consignors have to say about Omaha Beach. Click on each name to watch our 'Consignor Perspectives' video feature, where we go more in-depth about this year's class of first-crop stallions.

David O'Farrell

We are really impressed with the Omaha Beach 2-year-olds so far. I think the fact that he was a dirt horse lends the possibility that he could be versatile on any surface. I think they're going to be early, but I don't think they're going to have distance limitations either. I think he has a lot of potential to be a really great sire.

Our Omaha Beach filly out of Hot Water (Medaglia d'Oro) is just really special. She seems to be a really good filly–very athletic, loves her job, moves well on the racetrack. Just everything you like to see in a young 2-year-old at this stage.

The Omaha Beach filly out of Starlit Daydream (Can The Man) is a handy filly. She has an efficient way of moving and a lot of quality about her. She shows a lot of promise.

Also mentioned: Vino Rosso (Spendthrift, $15,000)

Value first-crop sire pick: Enticed (Darley, $5,000)

David Scanlon:

I've got a couple Omaha Beach 2-year-olds that I'm really impressed with. They share a lot of the similarities of War Front in their power and their musculature, but they seem to have a little bit more size and scope to them.

We have a nice Omaha Beach going to the OBS April Sale. He's out of the mare Queen's Wood (Tiznow) and is a big, powerful colt. He's a really strong horse, but he just floats over the ground effortlessly. We're really happy with him and really excited about him as a prospect.

Also mentioned: Vino Rosso (Spendthrift, $15,000) and Mitole (Spendthrift, $15,000)

Value first-crop sire pick: Maximus Mischief (Spendthrift, $5,000)

April Mayberry:

I have one Omaha Beach colt and one filly and I like them both. I like that in a sire, when they don't lean more towards fillies or more towards colts. They are all kind of similar looking and they all are good-minded. They move nicely. They've done everything I've asked of them and look like they have some talent.

Also mentioned: Audible (WinStar, $25,000) and Catalina Cruiser (Lane's End, $15,000)

Value first-crop sire pick: World of Trouble (Hill 'n' Dale, $5,000)

Bolt d’Oro’s Major Dude Back To Winning Ways in Kitten’s Joy

Spendthrift Farm's Major Dude (Bolt d'Oro) sat a midfield trip and worked home best of all to record a second victory at the graded level in Saturday's GIII Kitten's Joy S. at Gulfstream Park.

Settled in about fifth position early as fellow 10-1 chances Dude N Colorado (GB) (Uncle Mo) and Boppy O (Bolt d'Oro) eyeballed each other through reasonable fractions, Major Dude dropped down onto the fence with about a half-mile to race and traveled well within the grasp of the in-form Irad Ortiz, Jr. as they raced around the turn. Following the three-wide move of his chief market rival Candidate (Exaggerator) nearing the stretch, the $550,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga acquisition was produced four deep off the home corner with a sound turn of foot, wanted to hang to his right while engaging the front-runners approaching the entrance to the final furlong and kicked on late to score comfortably. Candidate, who made all the running to defeat the comebacking Major Dude in the one-mile Dania Beach S. Jan. 7, was beaten for speed this time around, but turned in a sound late rally and just held off Dude N Colorado for third.

“He's a super nice colt, very consistent,” said trainer Todd Pletcher, who sent out 2022 Kitten's Joy winner Grand Sonata (Medaglia d'Oro). “I'll talk to the guys at Spendthrift. We're kicking around the idea of putting him on the dirt at some point. We'll see when that opportunity comes up.”

A debut winner over the Monmouth main track June 18, Major Dude was a well-beaten third in the one-mile Sapling S. at the Jersey Shore oval Aug. 27 before causing a 10-1 upset when trying turf for the first time in the GII Pilgrim S. at Aqueduct Oct. 2. The bay was unable to overcome a horror draw in 13 in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and checked in ninth before turning in a useful seasonal unveiling last time out.

Pedigree Notes:

The Cleary family's Clearsky Farms purchased this colt's stakes-placed dam for $320,000 in foal to The Factor at Keeneland November in 2016. Mary Rita is a full-sister to the SP Unbound, whose four winners from five to race include 'TDN Rising Star' Arabian Lion (Justify), while Major Dude's third dam is the redoubtable  Personal Ensign, the dam of MGISW My Flag (Easy Goer) and granddam of champion Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat). This is, of course, the Phipps family of Grade I winners Miner's Mark, Traditionally and Mr Speaker and the additional graded winners Fire Away (War Front)–who was recently represented by his first winner in South Africa–and Vigilantes Way (Medaglia d'Oro).

Major Dude is bred on a variant of the wildly successful cross of Medaglia d'Oro over Distorted Humor that is responsible for the likes of dual Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Aus), Elate and New Money Honey. The cross over mares by Distorted Humor's sire Forty Niner has resulted in the additional Grade I winners and champions Songbird and Rachel Alexandra.

Mary Rita is the dam of a 2-year-old colt by Audible, missed to Authentic and was among the first book of mares bred to Charlatan.
