In The Hot Seat: Clare Manning

The latest industry member to share their best moments from 2023 and likely prospects for this year is Boherguy Stud's Clare Manning.

Proudest moment of 2023?

Frazil (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), who Dad [Kevin] and I bought as a foal, winning his maiden at Naas in my own colours

What is your biggest ambition for the new year?

Make money and sell winners.

Give us one horse to follow and why?

A two-year-old Blue Point (Ire) colt out of Bandiuc Eile (Ire). He always had a great attitude throughout his prep and looked like the real deal.

And a young person in the industry to keep an eye on…

Conor Wixted–he'll go places.

Who do you think will be champion first-season sire this year?

Earthlight (Ire), or at least I hope so!

And the best value stallion in Europe?

Teofilo (Ire), standing at Kildangan Stud for €30,000. I'm definitely biased but he's produced a Group 1 winner in his first 11 crops, not to mention the impact he's having as a broodmare sire.

What's the one horse you wish you'd bought in 2023?

A Too Darn Hot (GB) colt from New England at Tatts Foals that Guy O'Callaghan bought for 185,000gns.

Biggest regret?

Not winning the lotto and being able to buy more foals.

Biggest influence on your career?

Dad and Granda [Jim Bolger]–they haven't steered me wrong, yet!

If you could sit down for dinner with three people (dead or alive) who would they be and why?

Joe Lyng, Mark O Sullivan and Eleanor Dunne. The lads always make for an interesting and entertaining dinner while Eleanor will guarantee it's in done in style.

Tylicki Dreaming Of Classic Glory For Fleetfoot Alongside Mentor Bolger

Freddy Tylicki, part-owner of the Jim Bolger-trained Fleetfoot (Ire), who advertised his Classic credentials with a gritty success at Leopardstown on Wednesday, has spoken glowingly about the Teofilo (Ire) colt's claims of major honours this season.

Fleetfoot was placed on all three of his starts at two, bumping into some smart colts each time, including subsequent G1 National S. hero Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}).

But the Shadwell-bred colt made no mistake on his seasonal return, battling best to land the 1m maiden as a 7-4 favourite despite racing on unsuitable ground.

That performance marked Fleetfoot down as a bright prospect, according to his part-owner Tylicki, who recalled how he has seen the potential in the horse ever since he was catalogued as part of the Shadwell dispersal at Goffs last year.

Tylicki said, “I took notice of this horse once the catalogue was published for the Goffs February Sale last year. Two weeks beforehand, we had the February Sale at Tattersalls, where I saw two of his siblings. One of those was Mashaaer (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}), who placed in the G1 Pretty Polly S. for Henry Spiller, and the other was a weanling by Blue Point (Ire).

“When I saw this fella in the flesh I was very impressed by him and, to cut a long story short, went off to Goffs to try and buy him. Unfortunately, I was completely blown out of the water but was ever so delighted to see that Mr Bolger bought him because the rest is history.”

Fleetfoot was knocked down to Boherguy Stud, which is managed by Bolger's granddaughter Clare Manning, for €135,000. Having started his career at Bolger's Coolcullen Stables, Tylicki had forged a long and fruitful relationship with the legendary trainer, something the former jockey turned bloodstock agent says is enhancing his experience with Fleetfoot.

He explained, “Life can be so good at times and so bad as well, but I obviously started with Mr Bolger and spent over three-and-a-half years there. It was a very tough school but it made a man out of me and got me on the right road in life. I knew exactly what I wanted in racing and in life when I left Mr Bolger's. We all know what happened to me in my career but I am now very focussed on the bloodstock side of things and, when I saw this horse, I absolutely fell in love with him, and so did Mr Bolger. It's such a pleasure to be a small part of the team that looked after me so well once upon a time and got me on the right road in life. I don't know how to describe my feelings, I am just overwhelmed with emotions and it's a great feeling. I won't forget this day in a hurry, that's for sure.”

Tylicki added, “Fleetfoot probably wasn't in love with the ground but he went on it and that is the main thing because he showed his versatility on the ground as well as the trip because there is no doubt that he will stay further in time. He just has that willing attitude that most of those good Teofilos have. Look, if there's one man to train a Teofilo, Mr Bolger is the man.”

Fleetfoot will now be aimed towards the Classics but just where the strapping colt lines out next is a different conversation for a different day according to Tylicki.

“He is entered in the Irish Guineas and Irish Derby and I think he is in the French 2,000 Guineas as well but, at this moment in time, all I am going to do is enjoy this evening! I am not sure where we will go but I am looking forward to the discussions once we know he came out of the race okay. The world is his oyster.”

Tattersalls Ireland Concludes Sale Season

The new yearling section of the Tattersalls Ireland November Flat Foal and Breeding Stock Sale provided the highlight lots during the rescheduled single-session sale at Fairyhouse on Wednesday, with a pair of fillies leading the way. Taking top honors at yet another yearling auction in 2020 was a Jim Bolger-bred, this time a Dawn Approach (Ire) filly out of the placed My Fere Lady (Mr Greeley) who was bought by Clongan House for €45,000. Her 3-year-old full-sister Feminista (Ire) is the lone winner from three runners for the mare. The chestnut was consigned by Boherguy Stud as lot 925.

Belardo (Ire) has gotten off to a promising start at stud this year, and his filly out of the winning Fashion Line (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) (lot 1004) from Ballybin Stud fetched €33,000 from BBA Ireland. The third foal from her dam, she is a sibling to a winner and from the family of G2 Prix de Royallieu scorer Princess Yaiza (Ire).

The session’s highest-priced yearling colt was a son of standout first-season sire Mehmas (Ire) (lot 922) who commanded €21,000 from Con Marnane. Consigned by Collegelands Stud, the bay is the second foal out of the nine times placed Midnight Destiny (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

The top-priced foal was Kilmore Stud’s colt from the first crop of the 2017 G1 Prix Morny and G2 Prix Robert Papin winner Unfortunately (Ire). Lot 1046, who is a half-brother to the Grade 3-placed chaser The Last Marju (Ire) and a grandson of G1 Nunthorpe S. winner Lochangel (GB), was bought by Ivor Andray Bloodstock for €25,000.

Trade overall was plagued by a low clearance rate, with just 53% of the horses that went through the ring finding new homes-that was down slightly from 55% last year. In all, 72 horses found new homes on the day for an aggregate of €439,700. The average dipped 5% to €6,107, while the median remained steady at €3,000.

Tattersalls Ireland Chief Executive Officer Matt Mitchell said,  “Today we concluded the 2020 sales season at Tattersalls Ireland. Reflecting on the year, 2020 has been one of the most challenging to date for all of us. That said, we have been able to conclude a successful season working closely with our colleagues at Park Paddocks and in tandem with HRI, ITM and Goffs. A heartfelt thank you must go to our loyal clients, who even in the most uncertain times continued their commitment to Tattersalls Ireland and for that we are extremely grateful.

“The year may have been testing, but the resilience of the bloodstock market is a testament to the industry. The market leading Derby Sale produced the second highest priced filly for the sale on record when the half-sister to Altior was sold for €300,000 to Gordon Elliott and Aidan O’Ryan. The September Yearling Sale saw a record price of £325,000 as well as the Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale seeing a 9% increase in average and a median price of €21,978, an increase of 22%. The November National Hunt Sale achieved its own records with the highest average on record and a record price for a mare when Laurina was sold for €290,000. This year we also saw the implementation of Live Online Bidding which is a perfect example of how the industry is evolving and has adapted to circumstances.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a safe and happy Christmas and we look forward to seeing you next year, in what we hope will be a more positive outlook.”

Average, Median Climb At Autumn Yearling Opener

Goffs staged the first of two sessions of its live online Autumn Yearling Sale on Tuesday. With the first-day catalogue of 296 scratched down to 167, 99 were sold (59%) for an aggregate of €662,400, compared to €1,134,400 last year when 192 were sold on the day from 254 offered. The average of €6,691 was up 13%, while the median climbed 11% to €4,200.

Boherguy Stud’s New Approach (Ire) colt out of Neophilia (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 192) had originally been slated for the Goffs Sportsman’s Sale, but connections opted for this spot when that sale was moved to Doncaster. While this sale was subsequently forced online, the Apr. 30 foal enjoyed a significant update in the interim, with Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) under his third dam having won the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud on Oct. 24. E Hannon went to €40,000 for the fourth foal out of the mare, who has produced the winning New Vocation (Ire) from two foals to race. The colt is bred on the same cross as this year’s G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy scorer Mac Swiney (Ire), and also shares his breeder, Jim Bolger. The New Approach colt is also from the same family as the Bolger-bred, Boherguy-consigned Teofilo (Ire) colt that topped the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale at £325,000, he being a full-brother to Gear Up.

Earlsfort Bloodstock went to €30,000 for an Oasis Dream (GB) colt out of the listed-placed Maybe Grace (Ire) (Hawk Wing) (lot 290), who has produced two winners from three runners and is a half-sister to Australian Group 1 winner Magic Hurricane (Ire) (Hurricane Run {Ire}).

The first-crop yearlings by Yeomanstown Stud’s Scat Daddy sire El Kabeir have been well received this season, and his name also featured among the top lots at this sale when Noel Meade went to €29,000 for Eyrefield Lodge Stud’s colt out of the listed-placed Bee Eater (Ire) (lot 157). That daughter of Green Desert has produced the G3 Marble Hill S. winner Minaun (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) among her eight runners and five winners. The third dam is the champion 3-year-old filly Marwell (Habitat).

The top-priced filly of the session was Tullogher House Stud’s first crop daughter of Ardad (Ire) (lot 86) who was bought by Con Marnane for €20,000. The dam Dame Shirley (GB) (Haafhd) is a full-sister to G3 Meydan Sprint winner Fityaan (GB).

The first day of the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale saw horses sold online to Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Kuwait, Poland, Serbia, Sweden and the UK, with 1225 online bids placed in addition to telephone bids. The second session of the sale begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
