Wholebodemeister Springs Major Upset in Davona Dale; Vequist Off The Board

Reigning Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly Vequist (Nyquist) was bet like she could not lose her 3-year-old debut in Saturday's GII Davona Dale S. at Gulfstream Park, but she never so much as truly reached contention, as Wholebodemeister (Bodemeister) got loose and brave on the lead and scampered clear to cause a 52-1 boilover. Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map) was a bit hesitant to load, but closed off decently for second ahead of 53-1 Competitive Speed (Competitive Edge) in third.

Drawn the fence with Edgard Zayas calling the shots, Wholebodemeister put herself right into the race and set what appeared to be a solid pace from Adios Trippi (Adios Charlie) as Vequist settled one out and one back in the second flight. Wholebodemeister galloped them along comfortably, but Vequist began to find her best stride three wide at the three-eighths and worked her way up to within a couple of lengths of the front-runner. The champ was soon under the bat and clearly in deep waters, but the same could not be said for Wholebodemeister, who widened under a hold with a furlong and a half to travel and wandered about inside the final eighth of a mile, but was never in serious danger. Vequist was not persevered with when clearly beaten and finished ninth of the 10 runners.

A maiden winner from three juvenile appearances, Wholebodemeister was the 4 3/4-length winner of a modestly rated two-lifetime allowance at Gulfstream West Oct. 24 ahead of a never-nearer seventh in Tampa's Sandpiper S. Dec. 5. The homebred was stretching out to the mile for the first time, having made moderate late inroads to be third, beaten under two lengths, in the seven-furlong GIII Forward Gal S. at this venue Jan. 30.

“Last time, it was a troubled trip,” Zayas said. “She's still learning a lot. I remember last time she was between horses and she didn't like it. The last eighth she found some space and she went through it and only got by a little more than a length. I knew she would be solid if I could keep her in the clear. My plan was just to break out of there, put her on the lead and see what she got.”

Wholebodemeister is the 20th stakes winner and seventh black-type winner for her sire, who now stands stud in Turkey, and she is the 11th stakes winner (sixth graded winner) out of a daughter of the late Scat Daddy. The bay is out of a Grade III-placed daughter of the SP Carr Shaker (Carr de Naskra), the dam of New York-bred GSW Dewars Rocks (Big Mukora) and two other state-bred stakes performers. Wholelottashakin was barren to Connect for 2019, but produced a Union Rags filly in 2020 and foaled a colt by Arrogate Feb. 3 of this year.

Bodexpress Retired

Fan favorite Bodexpress (Bodemeister–Pied a Terre, by City Zip), recent winner of the GI Clark H. at Churchill Downs Nov. 27, has been retired after suffering an undisclosed, career-ending injury in the race, according to a tweet late Sunday from trainer and part-owner Gustavo Delgado.

“With great regret, we announce the retirement of Bodexpress,” the tweet read. “He suffered a career-ending injury while winning the G1 Clark Handicap. A very talented colt, who finally showed his potential at CD. Thank you Bode for the journey & memories. To his fans, Thank you for your support!!!”

Bred in Kentucky by Martha Jane Mulholland, Bodexpress was bought back as a yearling at Keeneland September and again as a 2-year-old at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale and though he required eight starts to break his maiden, the bay colt ran future GSW & MGISP Shancelot (Shanghai Bobby) to a neck over seven furlongs in February 2019 and was runner-up to Maximum Security (New Year’s Day) in the GI Florida Derby.

Unplaced in the GI Kentucky Derby, he famously tossed John Velazquez at the start of the GI Preakness S., and more recently romped by 11 1/4 lengths in an allowance at Gulfstream Park West Oct. 17 ahead of the Clark, where he outfinished Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}) by a length at odds of 11-1.

Also raced by Top Racing LLC and Global Thoroughbred, Bodexpress retires with a record of 4-4-3 from 17 starts and earnings of $694,600. Delgado said the colt is currently at the farm in Ocala pending stud plans.

Pegasus World Cup Is ‘Likely Next Spot’ For Newly-Minted Grade 1 Winner Bodexpress

Top Racing, Global Thoroughbred and GDS Racing Stable's Bodexpress is set to make his return journey to South Florida on Monday following his 11-1 upset victory in Friday's Grade 1, $500,000 Clark presented by Norton Healthcare at Churchill Downs

“Everything is good,” said Gustavo Delgado Jr., the assistant to his father. “He'll spend a few days in Ocala, Fla. before returning to Gulfstream Park West. Gulfstream Park is our home track. So, the likely next spot could be the ($3 million) Pegasus (G1).”

Bodexpress, most known for his antics in the 2019 Preakness Stakes, gave jockey Rafael Bejarano his first victory in the Clark.

“It means a lot to my career to win this race,” Bejarano said. “I spent many years at Churchill in the past and this was always a big race to win in the Fall Meet. I'm glad we were able to do so now that I'm back home in Kentucky.”

Bodexpress improved his overall record to 4-4-3 through 17 starts. The 4-year-old son of Bodemeister has now banked $694,600 in earnings.

Bodexpress Springs the Upset in the Clark

Bodexpress (Bodemeister) has had an unconventional career, running in the GI Florida Derby, GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. last year–and throwing his rider at the start of the latter–as a maiden. Placing in a trio of stakes since then, the bay finally earned his black-type badge Friday at the highest level with an 11-1 upset in Churchill’s GI Clark H.

Away alertly, Bodexpress pressed from second early as 155-1 shot Phantom Currency (Goldencents) clocked opening splits of :23.39 and :47.94. Headed by Mr. Freeze (To Honor and Serve) to his inside, Bodexpress maintained his position through three-quarters in 1:12.77. Mr. Freeze took over from Phantom Currency approaching the far turn and Bodexpress ranged up on his outside with favored Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}) splitting horses outside of him. Coastal Defense (Curlin) joined the assault to Mr. Freeze’s inside and Owendale (Into Mischief) rallied outside of Code of Honor, but Bodexpress was going strongest of all and forged clear in the final sixteenth to score.

“This is a different horse than we saw last year during the Triple Crown campaign,” said trainer Gustavo Delgado’s son and assistant, Gustavo Delgado, Jr. “He’s really matured. Turning for home I thought we had a really good shot. The horse deserves this most of all. I’m very happy for everyone involved but we are so happy for Bodexpress.”

“This horse just showed so much run today,” winning rider Rafael Bejarano said. “I’m so proud of him. [Phantom Currency] was going so fast on the lead and we were able to sit a really good trip just behind him. He relaxed very nicely for me and turning for home I could feel I still had a lot of horse underneath me. He had a lot of energy in deep stretch when we needed it to hold off the rest of the horses. It’s very special winning a race like this returning to Kentucky to ride this year. This is my home and we’ve had a lot of success here in my career. This was very special.”

Runner-up to future champion Maximum Security (New Year’s Day) in the Florida Derby last season, Bodexpress was promoted to 13th due to the disqualification of that rival in the Kentucky Derby and dumped his rider at the start of the Preakness. Breaking his maiden next out at Gulfstream West last October, he won an allowance there a month later and finished his sophomore season with a third in the GIII Harlan’s Holiday S. last December. Off the board in the GI Pegasus World Cup Jan. 25 and the GII Gulfstream Park Mile Feb. 19, Bodexpress was third in the GIII Hal’s Hope S. Mar. 28 and filled the same spot in Saratoga’s Alydar S. Aug. 9. Second in a Churchill optional claimer Sept. 5, the 4-year-old demolished the field by 11 1/4 lengths next out at Gulfstream Park West Oct. 17.

Bodexpress is the second Grade I winner for the expatriated Bodemeister, following GI Kentucky Derby hero Always Dreaming. He is also one of six graded winners and 19 black-type scorers for the stallion. The winner is the second graded winner and 15th stakes winner out of a daughter of City Zip. Pied a Terre has only produced one foal since Bodexpress, a juvenile filly by Gemologist.
