Impeccably Bred Into Mischief Shines at Keeneland

Hip 356, a striking daughter of Into Mischief out of 2015 GI Alabama S. winner Embellish the Lace (Super Saver), was hammered down to Spendthrift Farm for $1.25 million, the second filly to eclipse the seven-figure threshold Tuesday as the fireworks continued at Keeneland September. The bay was consigned to the sale by Bluewater Sales on behalf of China Horse Club International, which paid $2.4 million for Embellish the Lace, in foal to Uncle Mo, at Fasig-Tipton November in 2016. It is the second produce from the mare to make better than $1 million at public auction, as the 2-year-old filly Tap the Faith (Tapit) was purchased by Claiborne Farm for the identical $1.25 million at this sale last year and returned to the worktab at Belmont Park Sept. 11. The 3-year-old filly Classique (Pioneerof the Nile) realized $700,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga in 2019.

Buyers, Sellers, Sales Companies Talk COVID-19 and the Fall Sales

The daily number of U.S. deaths from the Covid-19 virus neared 1,000 per day last week, the highest level the country has seen since February. The seven-day moving average of Covid-19 cases reported by the CDC, is at 149,263, and continues to rise.

There are currently four variants circulating in the United States; Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Gamma, with Delta making up over 99% of all cases.

It seems like every day, someone we know in racing has contracted Covid, from trainer Todd Pletcher to the TDN's own Christina Bossinakis, and many of the people surveyed below. At no time is the demand to travel and circulate with others for our jobs in racing greater than it is for the fall sales period.

The TDN talked to a number of buyers and consignors about how they feel about traveling to the sales, what precautions they'll take, and what sales companies can do to make them feel safe.

We start off our conversation with Keeneland's President and CEO Shannon Arvin, who talked about sales protocols.

First and foremost, the health and safety of our clients, staff and equine stock is Keeneland's primary focus. COVID-19 has presented us with many challenges these past 18 months, but by working together, we have successfully navigated a constantly changing world to create a stable and steady market. And I believe we will do that again this fall sales and racing season.
Looking ahead to the September Yearling Sale, Keeneland will follow the guidance of health and government experts to create the safest environment possible for our sales participants. And just like last year, we ask for the continued support and cooperation of our customers and their staffs.

We strongly encourage those who have not yet been vaccinated to do so. Vaccination offers the best protection possible from COVID-19.

Most of us are extremely aware of the risk presented by COVID-19 and take the proper precautions where necessary.

At Keeneland, we have reinstated a mask mandate for all employees, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, while working indoors. Our unvaccinated employees are required to be tested weekly.

Consistent with current CDC guidelines, we strongly recommend that all sales participants wear a mask when indoors. This is an added layer of defense that keeps you and those you come in contact with safe.

Our facilities at Keeneland will undergo a deep cleaning following each sales session, and we've located hand sanitizing stations throughout the Sales Pavilion and grounds.

We also will continue to offer online bidding and phone bidding for buyers unable to attend the September Sale in person.

The Keeneland team looks forward to welcoming our friends and customers from around the world to Central Kentucky this fall. A silver lining of the pandemic is the resiliency and optimism of horsemen that always seem to carry the industry through challenging times. We are confident the market will continue to be buoyed by enthusiasm at the sales and a keen passion for racing.

I'm so glad you all are doing this story on the vaccine and protocols. I think it's important. Considering that last year Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton conducted multiple sales, and quite frankly kept our industry going, I know we can stay safe through this sales season as well. I think the key is keeping activity inside limited and being respectful of people and the variant.

I'm vaccinated, and look forward to the booster. I will wear a mask indoors and in the back ring, where I hope it is crowded. I do feel comfortable going because I thought they did a phenomenal job last year. They created a wonderful environment to conduct business utilizing so much of their outdoor space and I would expect they do something similar this year. I think we have learned from our friends who got sick in Saratoga that the vaccine is not bulletproof and the variant is real.

As for our team, we have worked hard to make everyone aware of the benefits of the vaccine and nearly every team member has been vaccinated. We will provide masks to co-workers and opportunities for us to not gather in the tack/warm rooms.

I will feel comfortable but I will also be a little hesitant because I have a 6-month-old baby who is not vaccinated. My concern is always how can I keep her safe. For that reason, I will be a little nervous. I will be wearing a mask and will be careful. I will probably only wear the mask when I am inside. When I look at horses, I generally am not super close to a lot of people except for my team. They are all fully vaccinated, which makes me feel safer.

As for protocols, that's above my paygrade so far as all the thought that has to go into that. I do think there should be a mask mandate for inside. That's probably the right thing to do.

I won't mind going. I've gotten my vaccinations. I had Covid and I got it when I was in Newmarket last year for the yearling sales. Covid changed my life in regards to the amount of traveling I want to do. To be honest with you, my time at horse sales going forward is going to be less than usual. In regards to fear of getting the disease, that's not on my mind. But so far a what it has done to me and my values in life, it's made me step back and look at what might be more important. I want to spend more time enjoying life and my family.

I won't wear a mask unless prompted and told to do so.

I know it's a pain in the butt, but I do feel that proof of vaccination is nice and if not proof of vaccination then you should have to show that you have tested negative. It should be one of the two. I went to the Grateful Dead concert in Saratoga last week and to get into the area of the pit you had to show that you had been vaccinated. To get into the concert, you had to have a negative test or the vaccination. That's like 20,000 people in an outdoor setting and they did their best to make sure that we were at event that would not turn into a super spreader event.

I personally attended the Saratoga sale and was surprised more people were not wearing masks, especially inside the sales pavilion. The number of people who caught some type of illness directly stemming from the sales and/or races was not surprising in my mind–COVID in particular is just that contagious. Since my parents are older, and more susceptible to the negative consequences of any virus, we have opted not to attend the September Sales. Like last year, we have assembled a great team of short listers, trainers and veterinarians to provide us with the information required to make our decisions from afar. Keeneland has done an outstanding job of establishing and improving their digital platform, and we have the utmost confidence bidding on their site. Hopefully the CDC figures will improve over the coming weeks so we can return to Kentucky in November.

I feel very comfortable because I had COVID and I have the antibodies and according to the doctors the antibodies last up to 90 days. I got it at the very end of July. The doctors and nurses told me that 99% of the people in the hospital were not vaccinated and I was not vaccinated either. I definitely regret not getting vaccinated. My wife had it about six months before I did and I was around her the whole time and I never caught it. It's not that I was against the vaccination. I just thought I didn't need it. That was a mistake.

I worry that there's not a lot anyone can do. If you're going to get it you're going to get it. I won't say that I won't go inside the pavilion, but I'm going to try to keep my distance from other people. Everyone should definitely have the Germ-X sanitizer in their pockets and should keep their distance when they can. Having said that, I would feel more comfortable if everyone were vaccinated.

I don't plan on wearing a mask. That's because every doctor has told me I have full-blown antibodies and for 90 days I cannot get COVID and I cannot carry it. I don't feel like I can receive it or give it to anyone. If they want me to wear a mask in certain areas, I will not mind. I'm not against masks by any means.

I feel comfortable going to the sale. I will take precautions like trying to keep my distance from others. Thankfully, most of it takes place outdoors. I won't be going inside the pavilion unless people are masked.

Masking indoors is a no-brainer. We've seen how well that woks and it especially works when everybody does it. I'll definitely wear a mask indoors. When I'm out looking at horses I'll probably have one around my neck and if somebody comes up to me I'll pull it up and talk to them. Thankfully, I am vaccinated. I know I can still get COVID, but my preference is obviously to not get sick.

Mike and I actually just got over Covid. We both had been vaccinated. We were in Saratoga and the Delta variant was going around, we got it and we're over it and we've been re-vaccinated. Personally, I will feel comfortable.

I just assumed they were going to go back to protocols similar to what they did last fall when they had badges and temperature checks. That seemed to be easy and seemed to go well.

I will wear a mask when I am near people. I think that's only fair the best way to keep others safe. I'm not worried about myself, but it's kind to do the right thing when it comes to others.

I feel comfortable going because I have been vaccinated. At this point, life is going on in the world. Going to the sale wouldn't bother me any more than going to a restaurant. I wear masks indoors and usually outdoors I don't.

I see no reason not to wear masks, especially in indoor situations. That's me personally. Outdoors, I don't think it really helps. I don't know how much a mask helps, but it certainly can't hurt.

I feel comfortable going. I am vaccinated and if I can get the booster before the sale I will. On protocols, that's a tricky one. What I have been seeing at various places is that when you go inside you have to wear a mask. I don't think that's unreasonable. If you're going to be inside the pavilion, perhaps you should have to wear a mask, that is unless things start to change.

I don't think I will wear a mask outside. But I am 66 and in a more vulnerable group, so I probably will wear a mask inside. I understand it's hard to get into the country and the Japanese have either had a hard time coming or are reluctant to come. They are a big part of our market. It will be disconcerting if they don't or can't come.

We're doing some simple things that we started last year. We made some changes that we thought would help. As far as protecting our staff, most of our staff have been vaccinated. There's going to be one person responsible for taking down someone's card and rather than have a buyer or agent fill out a card there will be somebody there to do that. That way you'll have fewer touch points. Most likely, we will not be requiring our staff to wear masks, but we will have masks available for our crew if they chose to wear one. Our feeling is that we are outside.

Ryder Finney Continues Family’s Racing Tradition

While Memorial Day weekend is thought of as the kick off to the beginning of summer, for Ryder Finney, it also serves as the unofficial start of sales prep season.

Early mornings of bringing in the yearlings, lengthy handwalking sessions under the hot summer sun and tedious hours monitoring the walker. All while analyzing every minute change in each yearling at Bluewater.

It's his favorite time of year.

“This time of year you see an unbelievable transformation in a lot of them,” Finney said. “Their winter hair falls off and they really start to mature and come into themselves. Watching them do that and helping bring them along is my favorite part of the process. It's constant vigilance and observation and if any little thing comes up you've got to be on top of it fast, but it's one of my favorite parts of the business.”

With rich family ties to racing, Finney has been invested in the sport for as long as he can remember.

“My mom [Meg Levy] runs Bluewater Sales, my dad was a bloodstock agent when I was younger and his dad, [longtime Fasig-Tipton President] John Finney, kind of built Fasig-Tipton Kentucky as we know it today,” Finney explained. “On the other side of my family with my stepdad Mike Levy, his family has been involved in the racing business through racetrack ownership, breeding, the whole thing. So I've been very spoiled and got to grow up around it every day.”

Finney didn't fully grasp his unique situation until his teenage and college years, when he left Lexington to attend Lawrenceville Prep School in New Jersey and the University of Pennsylvania.

“I would talk to my friends there whose families were not in the business and it would sort of blow their minds, just the whole concept of the horse industry,” he recalled. “They helped me realize just how cool it was, so I came home and I'm in it every day now.”

The 30-year-old now serves as the Bloodstock Specialist at Bluewater, playing a role in the day-to-day management on the farm while also advising clients with mating plans and at the sales.

One of his closest relationships is with Kirk and Debra Wycoff's Three Diamonds Farm. A longtime client of Bluewater, Kirk Wycoff sent his son Jordan down to Lexington for several summers years ago to work on the farm and learn the ropes of horsemanship. Similar in age, Finney and the younger Wycoff hit it off as they spent summers enjoying their two shared interests: horses and golf.

Finney's relationship with the Wycoff family continued to grow over the years and today, he helps Three Diamonds in a bit of each aspect of their business, from matings to pinhooks to layups.

“Kirk is really involved in the business at every level, which I think is tremendous,” Finney said. “He loves the game from top to bottom.”

Last spring, Wycoff owned a piece of a 2-year-old filly in the catalogue for the OBS Spring Sale. She was by Declaration of War, a stallion Three Diamonds was just starting to enjoying success with through their stakes winner Empire of War. They also had a juvenile colt by the same sire who would be named Fire at Will and later win that year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Wycoff wasn't sure if he was ready to part with this daughter of Tread (Arch), so he had Finney visit the Grassroots Training and Sales consignment at OBS and take a look at her.

“She checked every box physically and she worked outstanding,” Finney recalled. “We're always confident buying from Grassroots. Kirk has had horses with Dave and Jody for many years and we know how great a job they do, so he decided to buy her out and the rest is history from there.”

After Finney signed the $190,000 ticket, the bay filly was sent to Mike Maker and named Army Wife.

After three unsuccessful tries on the turf last year, she switched over to the main track and broke her maiden in October. When she came back in an allowance at Gulfstream in March, dueling to get the win by a nose, she had her connections' attention.

“Mike prefers to kind of race them into shape, so with the first race off the bench like that you don't always expect them to fire their 'A plus' shot,” Finney said. “Mike actually admitted before the race that he thought she was going to be a little bit short, conditioning-wise, so the fact that she gutted it out and won like she did really impressed me and kind of made me go, 'Huh, she might have some real talent.'”

Army Wife next finished third in the GIII Gazelle S. after getting into some trouble in the stretch, but Maker was undeterred and pointed her towards the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. at Pimlico.

With Joel Rosario aboard, the 9-2 choice came from off the pace to win by 2 3/4 lengths and earn her first graded victory on Preakness weekend.

After a quick vacation at Bluewater over the last few weeks, Army Wife is now heading back to Maker's barn to start her sophomore summer campaign.

“Kirk likes to let them be a horse for a second and kind of come back to themselves before they go back to the track, which I think is a very underrated concept,” Finney said. “Getting to eat grass and be a horse for a little while is totally rejuvenating for a lot of them. I think Mike is thinking the GI Alabama S. up at Saratoga. He loves the way she's responded to the increase in distance and thinks she'll get even better. Where she runs between now and then is up for debate, but I'm sure Kirk will have a plan. He always does.”

Army Wife has several traits that make Finney believe she has all the components to produce even more success.

“She's a very masculine filly, which I think carries over to her attitude at the racetrack,” he said. “As a 2-year-old she was a big, raw, forward filly. She's a good mover and has a very good mind, always very focused.”

Finney hesitates in saying that Army Wife is the most accomplished horse he's had a hand in, pointing out Grade II winner Instagrand (Into Mischief), a $190,000-turned-$1.2 million pinhook that he was a partner on. But there is one thing he will acknowledge.

“As far as a horse that has Ryder Finney written on the ticket, yes, this is the best one.”

When asked of his most favorite purchase he's ever made, Finney mentions the first horse he ever signed for- a filly named Turf War (War Front) that he purchased for Martin S. Schwartz for $425,000 at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Select Sale.

“At the time she was kind of a small, round, plain bay,” he recalled. “But she was a very, very good mover, which is sort of what drew me to her. She had a ton of presence for a smaller filly and a really sharp eye. She was the first ticket I ever signed. With my family's history at Saratoga and my great grandad's [Humphrey S. Finney] name on the sales pavilion, I've been going there every summer since I was born, so it's a special place to me and it was special to get her bought there. It was sort of surreal.”

Turf War went on to win the Christiecat S. at Belmont in 2019.

Another favorite for Finney and his family is last year's GI Darley Alcibiades S. winner Simply Ravishing (Laoban), a New York-bred filly Meg Levy bred from a $500 mare.

“When she came to Kentucky, I was one of the first people to see her and she was just a special physical from day one,” Finney recalled of the future Grade I winner. “She handled everything with so much class and intelligence. I was in tears when she hit the wire in the Alcibiades. It was as emotional as I've ever been for a horse race. Because there were no fans at the time, you can hear me on the feed screaming as she was coming down to the wire. It was one of the best days of my life for sure. I was so proud of her.”

Finney is sure to have many more “best days” in racing if he continues picking out winners.

“The Easter egg hunt of a horse sale fascinates me,” he said. “You show up a sale, especially a place like Keeneland September where there are thousands of horses, and you know that only a few of them can really run. The challenge of combing through that massive quantity of horses and coming up with the right one is a really tough game, but it's so rewarding.”

While Finney aims to continue sharpening his eye as a buyer, he's equally passionate about his role as a seller and  continuing to build the Bluewater brand.

“It can be very nerve racking,” Finney said of the sales. “I, like my mom, sometimes get nervous and have to leave the barn and stop watching the horses get shown because if one maybe takes a little bad step I go, 'Oh my gosh, they're not going to like my horse because it took one bad step.' It can be a lot because there's so much time and effort, day in and day out, that goes into each animal and you want to see them do their best. You want to see them live up to their full potential.”

Keeneland Marches Into Book 3

LEXINGTON, KY – The Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale continued to generate steady trade as its two-session Book 3 opened Thursday in Lexington. A pair of mares from the Bluewater Sales consignment brought the day’s co-highest price of $300,000 and were joined at that price by a weanling colt from the first crop of Mendelssohn who was purchased by Larry Best from the Four Star Sales consignment.

During Thursday’s session, 227 head grossed $13,153,000. The session average of $57,943 ticked up 2.29% from last year’s corresponding session and the median dipped 6.67% to $42,000. The session’s buy-back rate was 24.33%. Eleven horses sold for $200,000 or over during the session, compared to three reaching that threshold in 2019.

“I think it’s been fair,” Four Star’s Tony Lacy said of the market. “When you peel back the layers, I think this has been fair on both sides. Good horses are bringing good money. I think that horses that are perceived to have lesser value are a tougher sell. And I’m not saying that they are not good horses, but it’s just that there is a polarization for some better horses. But we are selling most of them, which is encouraging. I think, all in all, I have to say we are very pleased with how it’s turning out.”

Duncan Taylor of Taylor Made Sales Agency agreed that, given all the economic and pandemic uncertainties swirling around the auction, the November market was holding up well as it entered its Book 3 section.

“I think it was steady,” Taylor said as Thursday’s session was winding down. “I don’t think you got a lot of extra money at any point, but I think things were bringing about where we had them valued. There were still plenty of people wanting to buy. So I think it’s positive. I think the market is good. I’m not saying it’s great. There are a lot of people who selling horses who aren’t making any money, but things are moving and there is trade going on. We didn’t have many RNA’s today, so that’s always a good sign.”

The Keeneland November sale continues through next Wednesday with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.

Sex Symbol Sells at Keeneland

Patrick Masson signed the ticket at $300,000 to acquire Sex Symbol (Uncle Mo) (hip 1183) for his family’s Green Lantern Stables. The 3-year-old mare, who sold in foal to City of Light, is a daughter of Grade I winner Icon Project (Empire Maker) and is a half-sister to graded winner Fashion Business (GB) (Frankel {GB}). She was consigned by Meg Levy’s Bluewater Sales.

“Physically, she checked all of the boxes,” Masson said. “I like the cross of Uncle Mo over Empire Maker. The mother has the same breeding as Pioneerof the Nile and the pedigree goes back to the foundation mare La Troienne–and that was all very attractive to us. The mare was a dirt mare, even though she was able to run on turf in England. She has produced a turf horse, but it’s mostly a dirt pedigree and that’s what we are gearing towards now.”

At last year’s November sale, Masson purchased Ultimate Cause (Giant’s Causeway) (hip 1301)–also from the Bluewater Sales consignment and also in foal to City of Light–for $310,000.

“I bought a mare from Meg last year in foal to City of Light and we really like the baby that we got this year,” Masson said. “So that was also a factor.”

Of the mare’s final price, Masson added, “In this book, I didn’t think there would be many horses over $250,000, but I wasn’t surprised by that price for this mare in particular. That was my top price. I thought I would pay $200-250,000, but at $300,000 there were obviously multiple people involved in the bidding. We were happy to get her.”

A few hips earlier, Bluewater Sales sold another filly for $300,000. John Moynihan signed the ticket as Springbord Farm to acquire the racing or broodmare prospect Quality Heat (Quality Road) (hip 1149). Racing for Gary Barber and trainer Mark Casse, the 3-year-old filly was third in last year’s Chelsey Flower S. and Tepin S. at Aqueduct and in the Woodbine Cares S. In her lone start this year, the dark bay was third in an Aqueduct optional claimer in January. She was working regularly through September at Casse’s training center.

Best Strikes for Mendelssohn Colt

Larry Best continued his buying spree at Keeneland November, going to $300,000 to acquire a colt from the first crop of Grade I winner Mendelssohn. The bay weanling (hip 1269) was consigned by Four Star Sales and was bred by Malia Hopkins. He is out of the unraced Abuntia (Olmodavor), a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner St. Joe Bay (Saint Anddan).

“That was incredible,” said Four Stars’ Tony Lacy. “We knew we had a nice colt at the barn. Quality has been selling very well and we were optimistic, but again you never know where that level is as far as what a horse like that can bring. Obviously, he is a great advertisement for the stallion. Mendelssohn has been an exciting stallion. A lot of people have really been trying to find the better specimens by him. And there are a lot to choose from. So that was exciting. I did not see that coming necessarily, but it was a pleasant surprise.”

Best’s OXO Equine has purchased 16 head for $7,815,000. He acquired a pair of seven-figure mares, purchasing Concrete Rose (Twirling Candy) for $1.95 million and Indian Miss (Indian Charlie) for $1.9 million. Best’s weanling purchases were led by a $450,000 son of Mastery (hip 266).

Flatter Colt Destined for Resale

Peter Pugh, as agent for Cherry Knoll Farm, purchased a colt by Flatter for $205,000 to lead early weanling returns Thursday at Keeneland. The bay colt, consigned by Claiborne Farm and bred by Bradley Purcell, is out of Speedy War (War Front) and is a full-brother to stakes winner Stifling.

“Right now he’ll be a resale, he’s a pinhook,” Pugh said. “He is a big scopey, live-family, Flatter. That’s about all you need.”

Asked how he has found the weanling market this week in Lexington, Pugh said, “It’s been extremely difficult.”

Pugh initially said he wasn’t surprised by the competitive marketplace, but qualified his response, “Actually, I’m a little surprised because of everything that’s going on. But once you get to that upper end–you’ve heard it over and over again–it gets hard.”

Of spending over $200,000 for a pinhook prospect, Pugh said, “To get the horses you need, you’re always spending 20% too much. That’s just the way it goes. Hopefully it will follow through for next year.”

Pinchbeck to Join Elm Tree Band

The 6-year-old Pinchbeck (Mineshaft) (hip 1139), in foal to Mastery, will be joining the Elm Tree Farm broodmare band after Jody Huckabay purchased the 6-year-old for $200,000 Thursday at Keeneland. The bay mare was consigned by Everett Dobson’s Candy Meadows, which purchased her for $30,000 as part of the Sarah Leigh dispersal at the 2016 Keeneland January sale. Her dam Seeking Atlantis (Seeking the Gold) sold at that same auction for $300,000.

“We tried to buy her mother several years ago and underbid her,” Huckabay said. “It’s a Ned Evans family–they know what they are doing, it’s just a great family. I’ve been waiting and waiting on her and my daughter Caroline found her. It’s a family operation and when we all agree on one, we try to buy them.”

Pinchbeck, who won twice in 15 starts for Dobson’s Cheyenne Stables, is a half-sister to graded placed Seeking Her Glory (Giant’s Causeway). Her second dam is multiple graded stakes winner Atlantic Ocean (Stormy Atlantic).

The mare is carrying her first foal and Huckabay said her covering sire Mastery was another selling point.

“We own a share in Mastery and we support him and we’re big fans of Claiborne,” Huckabay said. “Obviously they sold very well this week and we had a very nice yearling by him in September. So we think he’s cut out to be a really good stallion and we just think it’s a really good cross.”

Huckabay said he was doing plenty of shopping at the November sale, but had not bid on many mares.

“We’ve done a lot of looking,” he said. “This is the third mare we’ve bid on. It’s tough to find young mares. You just have to siphon through all these mares and figure out what works for you. Everybody has different criteria.”
